Adams, Igboho face-off deepens despite Ooni’s peace move

The rift between the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, and Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho) has deepened.

Despite the peace deal brokered by prominent traditional rulers including, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the two activists have refused to sheath their swords.

Adams and Igboho are threatening each other with legal actions and demanding for public apologies.

The two leaders have been at loggerheads, following an alleged  leaked telephone conversation focussing on Igboho between Adams and another person.

In a letter of March 25, 2024 addressed to the Uoruba Generalisimo, Igboho’s awyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, demanded an immediate retraction of what he described as “scandalous, malicious and defamatory statement” made against him.

He also demanded that within 48hours, the Aare should admit in two national publications that he falsely accused Igboho or be ready to pay a damage of N10billion.

But, Adams warned that his silence should not be taken as cowardice on the alleged defamation of character.

He said the allegations were deliberate efforts by some individuals to drag his name in the mud.

Reflecting on the controversy generated by the alleged audio clips, Adams said he was ready to set the records straight on the questions hanging in the balance on the alleged defamation contained in the clips.

He said in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi, that  the ongoing suit by Igboho and the Chief of Staff to the Lagos State Governor, Mr.Tayo Ayinde, was a  grand conspiracy to discredit his person.

Adams said he was prepared to protect his hard -earned name and the office  he represents.

He said Igboho and Ayinde are not ready to toe the line of peace as initiated by the Ooni of Ife.

Adams said: “The reason for my silence in the midst of the various legal and media infractions by Igboho and Ayinde was not because I am a coward, but because of the initial interventions of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, other prominent Obas and several other important personalities in Yorubaland.

“But with the ongoing lies and aspersions against my person, I think it is time for me to come out open and set the record straight.

“Though, my legal team have done what was required of them, I need to state it clearly that the audio clip generating the squabbles was a distorted and disjointed content of a private conversation which held way back in 2021 with a US-based younger brother of a friend.

“The conversation was initiated by the young man who claimed he wanted a reconciliation between myself, Igboho and some other people. It was while responding on reasons for reconciliation at the time that he mentioned the names of the two people.”

“In the said audio, I said it repeatedly that though it was very difficult to believe, there’s an unconfirmed rumour allegedly linking Igboho to the murder of the late Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige.

“My statement was not done in bad faith and it was purely a private conversation. It is surprising how a private conversation held almost four years ago would suddenly turn up in the hands of Igboho.

“To discerning minds, it is obvious that Igboho unlawfully invaded my privacy, bugged a private conversation and inappropriately used the same on several social media platforms.

“Before now, precisely in early March, the same people had bombarded the media space about my heritage. The same people had claimed I was of Tapa, Nupe extraction. In another breath, they alleged that I requested the sum of N20billion from the organisers of the Yoruba Security Conference, held in Ile Ife, Osun state on 29 February, 2024.

“They followed up these dastardly acts by invading and intruding on my privacy. My legal team are presently working on all these.

“However, on the issue of my brother, Tayo Ayinde, let me make it clear here that I repeatedly said that whatever was said was a rumor that couldn’t be substantiated or made public. But for their sinister motives, it was Igboho that bugged my telephone, published and made it public.

“The picture has now become clearer that they resorted to the audio clip blackmail after they failed in their earlier attempt to rubbish my name.

“This was how they abused the Ooni of Ife, His imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the late Alaafin of Oyo,Oba Lamidi Adeyemi and other Yoruba Obas that had done well and contributed a lot to the development and progress of Yoruba.”

  • Coronation: Diaspora Obas’ Council lauds Olugbo, cautions Adams

The Council of Yoruba Obas in Diaspora has hailed the commitment of the Olugbo of Ugbo kingdom, Oba Dr. Frederick Akinruntan, to the preservation of the Yoruba culture, both at home and in the Diaspora. Oba Akinruntan had recently in his palace in Ugbo community, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, crowned three Diaspora-based Nigerians as Yoruba Obas. The three crowned traditional rulers are the Oriade of Georgia, United States, Oba Bernard Shola Akinrimisi; Oba Saheed Ibrahim Adufe of Ireland and Oba Omobolaji Ogunkoya of Liberia.

In a statement signed on Friday by the Secretary of the Council, Mr. Olukunle Akanbi, the monarchs said recent remarks and diatribes of those up in arms against the Olugbo are sacrilegious. “We, Oba Yoruba in Diaspora, appreciate Olugbo and Paramount Ruler of Ugbo Kingdom, for the affirmation honour and formal recognition bestowed on us on 22nd April, 2019. It is sacrilegious in Yorubaland for a chief to start querying or denigrating the office of any Yoruba king, talk more of a highly revered monarch like Olugbo.

“Is Gani Adams more Yoruba than those of us in the Diaspora or is it a crime to be in the Diaspora as a Yoruba son? Did he contribute anything to our relocation to the Diaspora for him to be acting like our caregiver?  While it is not difficult to fetch Adams critical motives against the installation of the worthy ambassadors in the Disapora, it will suffice to refresh his memories that Olugbo, who has a deep record of Yoruba history, has never and would never do anything undermine or compromise the Yoruba culture.

“Going forward, the council ceases to be distracted by the needless antics of Adams and his ilk, but to continue to see how to preserve and protect our highly revered culture and our people in the Diaspora. We urge Adams to look for means of settling his differences with legions of notable Yoruba sons and daughters including members of the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC),” the statement said.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi and Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland Aare Gani Adams have urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the coming elections are free, fair and credible.

The duo spoke at the Oodua Festival, in Ile Ife, Osun state on Monday.

Represented by the Obalufon of Ife, Oba Idowu Adediwura and Lowa Adimula of Ife, High Chief Adekola Adeyeye, Ooni Adeyeye described the annual Oodua Festival as a pleasant homecoming for all members of the Oodua Progressive Union (OPU) across all 84 countries in the world, and the Oodua People’s Congress in Nigeria.

“As great sons and daughters of the Yoruba race, we must not fail in our duty to project the cultural identity of the Yoruba race as it is being promoted by Aare Adams, through the Olokun Festival Foundation and the OPC,” he said.

Adams, restated his belief in restructuring, saying Nigeria can only get it right with restructuring.

He said: “As we look forward to next month’s elections, I will not leave this podium without appealing to the electoral umpire to conduct free, fair and credible elections. This is a great moment in the life of our country. And we need to get it right at all costs. We cannot afford to fail in the coming elections. In as much as I seek free, fair and credible elections, I am also interested in making a case for restructuring. If we are to make any reasonable change in Nigeria, this country needs restructuring. Whatever name you may call it. It is really important to restructure the country and for all I care for is nothing but restructuring.”

  • Restructuring key to nation-building, says Adams

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba, Iba Gani Adams, has said the restructuring of the country is vital to evolving a greater nation.

He urged the Yoruba nation to adopt a new paradigm shift on issues that affect the country.

Adams spoke at this year’s two-day summit and interactive session of the Oodua Progressive Union (OPU) in Hamburg Germany.

He said: “As the 2019 general elections draw nearer, there is need for the Yoruba to adopt a new paradigm shift.”

The Aare Onakakanfo frowned at what he called the desecration of the sanctity of the traditional institution by some people who he said arrogate to themselves the position of a Yoruba monarch in the Diaspora.

“Our traditional institution is sacred and we won’t allow anybody to tarnish the image, even as we urge all Yoruba Obas in their states to condemn the abominable act,” he added.

Aare Adams, who met with the Nigerian Ambassador to Germany, Mrs. Mobolaji Sakirat Ogundero, said contending issues discussed at the summit include restructuring of Nigeria as well as decentralisation of security, monetary, education and infrastructure.

The Yoruba leader said this would allow the federating unit to develop at their own pace.

He said: “The word ‘restructuring’ simply means reorganisation, not disintegration. Our position on this is clear: that is, Nigeria cannot afford to isolate itself from the rest of the world.

“For years, patriotic Nigerians have been agitating for restructuring, but a few elements in the country are against it. As far as I am concerned, those calling for restructuring should not be seen as enemies of state but partners in progress.”

OPC members from 84 countries as well as other prominent Yoruba groups were present at the summit.

President of Isokan Omo Yoruba in Germany, Chief Adewole Albert, also attended the ceremony.

  • Adams: why I’m interested in Osun election

Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland Gani Adams has expressed readiness to be part of the process to institute a formidable administration in Osun State.

Adams, who promised  to follow the elections “keenly from the sidelines,” clarified this was because of what he called “the enduring Yoruba interest.”

A statement by the Gboyega Oyetola Media Office said Adams warned that the poll should not be politicised under any guise, acknowledging the strategic position of the state in Yoruba affairs.

He spoke during his visit to the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, in his Ileri Oluwa Situation Office, Osogbo, the state capital.

Adams, who was in the town for the 2018 Osun Osogbo Festival, described Governor Rauf Aregbesola, Oyetola and other contenders as gentlemen who, he believed, would play the game by the rules.

Oyetola expressed gratitude to Adams for the visit, assuring him that he was committed to the ideals of  ‘Omoluabi’ which, according to him, offered a summary of the “Yoruba Agenda” vision.

The APC candidate said he would sustain and consolidate sterling development process instituted by the administration. He added: “I would, even in doing this, seek to break new grounds that would be the pride of the Yoruba.”

The APC candidate said he would maintain values for which the Yoruba are known must not be allowed to die, promising to use his office as governor to promote enduring culture and tradition of the race.

  • Shehu Sani, Adams: those who annulled June 12 must apologise

A HUMAN rights activist and lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani and National Coordinator of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland Gani Adams have urged those who annulled and betrayed June 12, 1993 presidential election to apologise.

Sani, who spoke yesterday in Ogba, Lagos, at the 25th anniversary of the June 12, 1993 presidential poll, said it was unfortunate that “these saboteurs did not allow the late Chief MKO Abiola to realise his dream of enabling Nigerians to say farewell to poverty.

“I hail President Muhammadu Buhari for recognising and declaring June 12 as Democracy Day, but he should ensure that the senseless killings ongoing in the country are stopped.

“The greatest honour President Buhari can do to the late Chief Abiola is to sustain his ideals by promoting unity and ensuring that Nigerians enjoy the good things of life.

“Traitors of June 12 must not be honoured. Those who worked for the late Gen. Sani Abacha and Gen. Ibrahim Babangida to truncate the June 12, 1993 presidential poll must not be honoured.”

The senator lambasted the people who abandoned Chief Abiola during the struggle and hailed heroes of democracy like the late Gani Fawehinmi, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Prof.  Wole Soyinka, the late Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti and others “for ensuring that Nigerians now enjoy democracy”.

Adams thanked Buhari for “taking this bold initiative of honouring the late Abiola and the late Fawehinmi.”

He said Nigerians would not forget him for putting the country’s democratic history in the right perspective.

Adams added: “All over the world, issues of security, good health, education, enduring social structure and good economy always take the centre stage.

“I implore the Buhari administration to take care of these and other good things of life, which will ameliorate Nigerians’ sufferings.

“The way we clamoured and struggled to make June 12 Democracy Day, we need to make sacrifice, struggle and make a case for restructuring.

“We need to stand firm and raise our voices in support of restructuring. If Nigeria is restructured, the federating units or states will develop at their own pace.

“Our democracy has been so monetised that to some Nigerians, it defies logic. The result is that electoral malpractice has become the order of the day.”

Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council Dr. Qasim Akinreti hailed President Buhari for doing justice at the right time by recognising Chief Abiola and declaring June 12 as Democracy Day.

Personalities who fought for June 12 were given awards at the event.
