  • Police dismiss four SARS operatives for robbery, other crimes

AIG Adamu Ibrahim, in charge of Zone 2 Command, has approved the dismissal of four policemen attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ikeja, Lagos State, over alleged robbery and other crimes.

CSP Dolapo Badmus, the Zone’s spokesperson, confirmed the dismissal on Sunday in Lagos.

According to Badmus, the dismissed officers are Sgt. Adeoye Adekunle; Sgt. Adekitan Adebowale; Sgt. Agbi Lucky and Sgt. Odighe Hehosa.

She said that the four policemen were dismissed and subsequently charged to court for armed robbery, kidnapping, unlawful detention, intimidation and threatening violence.

Badmus said that the panel recommended them for dismissal based on the report of the investigation carried out on a petition against them.

She said that a petition was written against them by Mr Chukwudi Godwin Odionye, popularly referred to as ‘Bishop’ on May 2, 2018.

“The petitioner stated that on June 4, 2017, he was in his house around Alagbado area of the state when four armed men stormed his house to effect his arrest on the allegation of performing ‘FAKE’ miracles.

“He stated that after his arrest, he was taken to one hotel at Agege where he was detained and threatened to be killed if he fails to cooperate.

“He explained further that the following day, June 5, 2017, he was taken to the bank where he was made to transfer N7 million to the account of one of the operatives.

“On receipt of the petition, the AIG ordered investigation into the case.

“On the strength of investigation, it was revealed that no proper police procedure for investigation was followed in Mr Chukwudi’s arrest.

“The four SARS operatives actually abducted the man from his house and unlawfully detained him in the hotel under the guard of the suspects for personal gain,” Badmus said.

She reiterated the AIG’s directive that the force would not tolerate any act of misconduct, which undermines the value of international best practices of the police.

    Navy apprehends recruitment fraudster

The Nigerian Navy said on Saturday it has arrested, a suspected recruitment fraudster, Yohanna Ahmadu, for attempting to defraud one Adamu Ibrahim during the last nationwide recruitment exercise.

The Acting Director of Information, Naval Headquarters, Navy Capt. Suleman Dahun, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.

Quoting Commodore Gbolahan Olubode–Fazaz, the Commander Naval Unit Abuja, Dahun said the suspect had charged his victim the sum of N50,000 and promised to get him enlisted into the Nigerian Navy.

The acting director further alleged that the fraudster had directed the victim to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base in Kaduna and promised that his “boss’’ would assist in the exercise.

He said: “Ahmadu thereafter, collected the victim’s passport photograph, photocopies of his credentials and urine sample for a fake test.

“The suspect demanded the sum of N50,000 from his victim before releasing a fake Nigerian Navy appointment letter which he will use to report for the training at the Nigerian Navy Basic Training School, Onne, Port Harcourt.

“But luck ran out on him when the victim called a Naval personnel complaining of this extortion and was directed to play along by promising to pay the amount upon their return to Abuja, where he was lured to a Diamond Bank branch in Kubwa and arrested,”

According to Dahun, Ahmadu has been handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The acting director warned interested members of the public to be wary of recruitment websites that would always ask for money as recruitment into the service was free of charge.

…Arrest man in viral video attack on foreign national

Four suspects who allegedly kill people and sell their body parts would be paraded Tuesday by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Zone II, Adamu Ibrahim.

The suspects, according to the zonal spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP), were arrested Tuesday by the Zonal Intervention Squad (ZIS) and would be paraded by 12pm.

This is just as the zonal command Tuesday said it has arrested the suspect behind the attack on a foreign national who was seen in a viral social media video begging for his life.

In the video, which had vernacular speaking residents, it was alleged that the foreigner, whose identity has been given as Robert Wheelers, was attacked by a member of suspected ritual gang, Badoo at Ikorodu.

Although the Lagos Police Command had denied any such incident occurred within its jurisdiction, Badmos Tuesday said the suspect, Leo Orabe, was arrested on September 8.

She stated that he clubbed the victim thrice on the head at his Adeniyi Street, Ikorodu residence at the wee hours of August 25.

It was gathered that the suspect, who worked with Wheelers at Tony Elumelu Foundation in 2015, picked him up at the airport and was to be his host till he returned to the United States.

The Nation learnt that Orabe moved to kill the American for reneging on a promise to give him some money.

According to the police, Orabe lured the American to Nigeria and picked him up at the airport. He was to be his host till he returned to his country but he attempted to murder him.

While the victim was rushed to the hospital by detectives, who received a distress call, Orabe was said to have fled his residence but was arrested at his hideout on September 8, following a tip-off to police.

Badmos said: “The suspect confessed to the AIG that he clubbed the victim’s head with pestle three times. He said he did it because the Whiteman reneged on his promise to give him an unspecified amount of money.

“He claimed he has invested so much money in his effort to get the money from the American. That he even consulted a white garment church, where he was given a charm to use on the victim but it did not work. He said he was deeply angered when the victim did not obey his instructions.

“Investigation is on-going on the matter. The AIG has directed that no stone be left unturned in unraveling the case.”
