    Sokoto governor tasks cabinet on transformation drive

    Sokoto state governor, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, has tasked members of his cabinet to be committed, purposeful, and sincere with a vision for ensuring a transformed state.

    He also urged them to be free and contribute to the success of the administration.

    He made this known on Wednesday, December 6, at the commencement of the 3rd weekly state executive council meeting in Sokoto.

    The governor said: “I can’t do it alone, we should collectively work towards reaching the dreamland and destination for the success of the state.”

    While noting that his administration was on course in fulfillment of its campaign promises to the people of the state, the governor stressed that the state was fast undergoing a robust transformation in so many respects.

    He stated: “We particularly promised to have a new Sokoto state and today we are seeing the transformation. The exco is a platform for discussing relevant issues, and proffering solutions with direct bearing on the lives of Sokoto people. Thank God for making us discuss and make decisions in the best interest of the Sokoto people.

    The governor also seized the space to thank and congratulate the efforts by his administration for recording some feat within the shortest possible time adding that, “I wish to congratulate us for the remarkable responses so far from within and outside the state portraying our successes in positive light.”

  • Meningitis: UNICEF donates cash, vaccines to Sokoto

    FOLLOWING the recent outbreak of Cerebro Spinal Meningitis(CSM) ‎in Sokoto state, the United Nations International Children’s Education Fund(UNICEF) is  delivering ‎850,000 doses of meningitis vaccines in addition  to a cash support of N17 million for logistics  and social mobilization activities to the state government.
    Accordingly, the Fund reaffirmed  it’s commitment to deliver results for children and makes sure children access to vaccination a priority above other needs.
    Mr Mohammed Mohiuddin, the Fund Chief in-charge of Sokoto Zonal Office,  made the disclosure Wednesday in Sokoto during a one-day stakeholders meeting as part of UNICEF’s support in response to CSM outbreak in Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states.
    The sensitization meeting coordinated by UNICEF Sokoto Field Office in Colaboration with Ministries of Health, Information, Basic and Secondary Education and partner agencies is organised for print and electronic media, Muslim and Christian religious leaders, traditional leaders and education stakeholders in Sokoto.
    Mohiuddin further said UNICEF will also use its field network through LGA consultants, voluntary community mobilizers and community volunteers in nine affected areas.
    The areas include: Bodinga, Rabah, Dange Shuni, Sokoto North, Sokoto South, Tureta, Goronyo, Isa and Gwadabawa.. ‎He also disclosed that community members were being sensitized and informed about the disease (CSM) campaign and particularly, date, place and time of vaccination.”
    The Zonal Chief‎ also said that community members in the 14 remaining local governments were being informed about prevention of the disease and how to seek help from health staff when the symptoms of meningitis were noticed.

    IGP plans annual recruitment of 30,000 constables to meet UN standards

    Mr Ibrahim Idris, Inspector General of Police says the force is working out plans to recruit 30, 000 constables annually to meet the UN ratio of 1 policeman to 400 people.

    Idris who spoke in Sokoto Wednesday through the Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of Northwest zone, Maigari Dikko while on a supervisory tour of the state command of the force said the essence was to pro-actively and effectively carry out proper policing to ensure the safety of lives and property of citizens.

    “We want to effectively address and mitigate crime and criminal activities.” just as the IGP promised to re-engineer the force through solving the various challenges facing its operations ranging from training, welfare and comfort and other motivational ingredients to bring the best out of the officers and men.

    He maintained that if every thing worked as planned, ‎crime rate would be curtailed to the lowest.

    He further noted that Sokoto state has the lowest crime rate, especially in cattle rustling.

    He also observed that based on its policing statistics, Sokoto has remained the most peaceful with negligible record in terms of crime rate.

    “I sincerely wish to commend the state for it’s efforts in curbing crime rate ‎within the zone”

    However, Idris commended Sokoto state government on its amnesty to prisoners, urging the government to also closely monitor the release‎d prisoners to avoid their return to such crimes.

    “I am calling on other states especially within the zone to emulate‎ Sokoto state amnesty efforts”, he added.

    Earlier in his welcome address, the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Abdulkadir, said the crime rate in the state was low with rare cases of robbery, kidnapping, and abduction due to the proactive approach strategised by the command.

    “We have strategised ‎and divided our operations into five sectors for patrols between 2300hrs to 0400hrs on daily basis”, he explained.

    Accordingly, the CP said it has intensified high ways patrol making it safer for movement of people, goods and services.

    “Our anti-cattle rustling patrol teams on different locations in Sabon Birni, Isa, Rabah and Kebbe‎ LGs have drastically curbed the menace within the axis”, pointed out the Commissioner.

    However, Abdulkadir said the command was faced with numerous challenges particularly of manpower and patrol vehicles adding that” we have inadequate standard police station buildings  as some divisions operate from makeshift structures.”

    In the same vein, he said the state police headquarters constructed since 1969 was fast diminishing with cracked walls,” it needs total renovation and facelift with adjourning facilities otherwise it is on the verge of total collapse.”

    There was a fire outbreak at the Sokoto old market last night according to reports.
    It was gathered that the fire incident which cause was yet to be known occurred at about 9:30pm after the close of business.
    However, ‎the state fire service had deployed its personnel to the site just as sympathisers and other good samaritans joined in trying to bring the fire under control.
    Also at the scene to ensure security as well check the activities of hoodlums were men of the Nigerian police‎.
    As at the time of filing the report, the men of the fire service were still battling to control the fire from spreading.

    Kano in good hands with Ganduje – Tambuwal

    The Governor of Sokoto state , Aminu Waziri Tambuwal on Thursday said Kano state remains in good hands with Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as Governor.
    He described ‎Ganduje as a visionary and people-oriented leader with the committed mind for the development of the state as north’s commercial nerve.

    The former Speaker, House of Representatives made the remark in Sokoto when Ganduje paid him a courtesy call.

    According to Tambuwal: ”Ganduje is not my friend, but a Senior brother and a colleague.

    ”He is an experienced public servant and a very mature  politician.

    ”I must, therefore, commend him for giant developmental strides in Kano State.”

    The governor also commended Ganduje for  choosing Sokoto to hold their retreat on the operations of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    Tambuwal further noted that the retreat would allow for stock taking and fashioning out more people-oriented programmes and policies.

    In his short speech, Ganduje told Tambuwal that, they were in Sokoto for a three-day Retreat on the activities of the APC.

    ”APC is the greatest party in Africa and will brainstorm on the achievements, problems and ways forward.

    ”We will also look at the constitution of the party, its philosophy, as well as understand the basic issues.

    ”We will discuss issues relating to internal democracy and other sundry issues,” Ganduje added.

  • Buhari is capable of fixing Nigeria- Tambuwal

    Sokoto state Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has said that he is confident President Muhammadu Buhari has the ability to fix Nigeria in the right direction for optimum economic growth.

    He noted that the steps being taken by the Buhari led government were desirable to transform the system from a mono economy to a dynamic system economy.

    Accordingly, the governor maintained that, Nigeria would soon exit the current recession.

    Tambuwal who spoke to newsmen in Sokoto Friday shortly after the conduct of two prayer sessions to mark Nigeria’s 56th Independence Anniversary celebrations said‎ Nigerians have unshaken confidence in Buhari to salvage the country.

    ”We should continue to cooperate and support the President’s efforts to realise his vision of taking Nigeria to greater heights”, he called.

    The prayer which was conducted in two sessions with the first ‎ at the 1 Brigade Central Mosque, Sokoto,led by Cpl Abdullahi Yunusa and Sheikh Buhari Sirriddawa while the second led by the Rural Development Commissioner, Alhaji Abdullahi Maigwandu was held at the Presidential Lodge, Sokoto.
    ‎However, the governor implored Nigerians to continue to support leaders, at all levels.

    Similarly, Tambuwal urged Nigerians to sustain their fervent prayers, for sustainable peace, unity and socioeconomic prosperity.

    ”There is no country in Nigeria in the whole of the world in terms of human and material resources.

    ” Nigerians can excel in all endeavours and anywhere they find themselves,globally.

    ” Nigeria will also continue to provide leadership to Africa, as well as blossom as an indissoluble country.

    ” Nigeria is currently just passing through a developmental phase, just like many other nations like USA had done,” the governor pointed out.

    The two sessions were attended by Tambuwal and his deputy, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu and other officials.

    The Sultan of Sokoto, Akhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, was represented by the Galadiman Gari, Alhaji Aliyu Attahiru.

    Sokoto employs 21 fresh graduates for PHCs

    • Prepares 309 nurses, midwives for state service

    No fewer than Twenty One fresh graduate doctors from the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto have been recruited by the Sokoto state government for immediate posting to various Primary Healthcare Centres across the state.

    Similarly, the government is working to regularise professional qualifications of 309 nurses and midwives from the state in preparation for their eventual absorption into the state civil service.‎

    The number include 109 graduates nurses and 200 midwives trained by the Federal Government under the Midwives Service Scheme (MSS).

    The state commissioner of health, Dr. Balarabe Shehu Kakale, stated this during a regular briefing to Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal on the activities of the ministry according to a ‎ statement Wednesday by Tambuwal’s spokesman, Malam Imam Imam.

    It explained that the decision to employ the new doctors will, however, boost manpower needs at the PHCs in various parts of the state.

    “As fresh graduates, they are expected to undergo housemanship, but in the meantime, they have received enough training to handle primary health challenges associated with the grass root level.

    “We will support them to ensure they complete their further training,” the statement quoted the commissioner as saying.

    Meanwhile, the government said it has assisted families to provide free clinical circumcision to 1798 boys across the state.

    The policy was introduced to encourage safe circumcision and reduce instances of fatality among boys due to widely used traditional practice.

    It noted that various training sessions were being organised for traditional surgeons (wanzamai) who engage in the circumcision of boys known as Kuidu in Sokoto.

    “The wanzamai are undergoing training in areas like basic hygiene and standard operating procedure, among others”, the state government said in the statement.

    Accident: University refutes story on death of students

    Authorities of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, on Wednesday refuted a story being circulated about an accident that allegedly claimed the lives of six of its students.

    In a statement signed and issued to reporters in Sokoto by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Zuru ‎said ” Actually, there was such an accident involving our students, two days ago.

    ” However, there was no any death recorded as a result of the road traffic crash.

    ” As at today, Wednesday, only one female student is responding to treatment at our clinic and she is nursing a deep cut.

    ” The accident as depicted in the picture of the affected bus that had gone viral in the social media has therefore not claimed any life.”

    The statement further appealed to the students and other members of the university community to desist from spreading, ” such dangerous rumours.”

    It also advised that, clarifications should always be sought henceforth, before spreading unsubstantiated and damaging stories about the institution.

    Corruption costs world $2.6bn – Kerry

    United States Secretary of State, Mr. John Kerry, on Tuesday said corruption costs the world over $2.6 billion annually.

    Kerry made the disclosure in Sokoto at the Sultan’s palace where he delivered a speech entitled:” The importance of resilient communities and religious tolerance in countering violent extremism.”

    He said: ” This is money that can be used to improve the living standard and provide decent livelihoods for them.

    ‘”Corruption is not only a crime, but very dangerous and it must be tamed.”

    He remarked that corrupt officials, globally were ‘crooks’.

    The US Secretary of state also acknowledged the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari to holistically fight corruption, noting that‎ President Muhammadu Buhari understood this, as he was elected on the platform of clean government.

    ” Nigeria is already a regional leader in the fight against corruption. The country‎ is also a role model in the ongoing global efforts to fight corruption”, he pointed out.

    Accordingly, Kerry acknowledged the ongoing efforts by Buhari to entrench morality, transparency, honesty and good governance in public life while noting that, Buhari was also making commendable efforts to recover all stolen funds.

    Kerry stressed the need for the support of the military, other security agencies and the judiciary, among others, to ensure the success of the anti-corruption campaigns.

    He reiterated that, ” US is also fully committed to fighting corruption and the entrenchment of good governance globally.

    ” One of Nigeria’s strength is diversity of culture and religious tolerance.

    ” The former leaders of the defunct Sokoto caliphate and others like the late Sir Ahmadu Bello had stood by the virtues of peace, unity and tolerance,”

    He further acknowledged President Buhari’s bold efforts in fighting insurgency and other crimes across the country, saying that” Boko Haram boasts no agenda more than to burn schools.

    ” They also kill and maim people, especially teachers, and it is the opposite of any religion.”

    Kerry also expressed US deep commitment to working with its partners like Nigeria, to be able to build counter-terrorism capacities while disclosing that, it has worked out counter-terrorism strategies for implementation globally.

    He commended the sultan for his relentless efforts to entrench peace, unity and prosperity in Nigeria and beyond.

    He also lauded the plan by the sultanate council of Sokoto to establish an all-women university, noting that‎ girls, women, children and other vulnerable groups must be educated, given jobs and opportunities to explore their potentials.

    In his remarks, Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar commended Kerry for the visit and his ”inspiring speech”, saying that ” This will encourage us to redouble our efforts for a more stronger, united and prosperous Nigeria.

    The event was witnessed by Governors Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto and and Abdul’aziz Yari of Zamfara state including ‎religious, traditional and community leaders, as well as students.
