  • IFJ holds training for women journalists on safety, gender issues

    Journalists in the country have been advised to prioritise their safety in the course of their duties.

    The advise was given during a 2-day workshop on Gender Equity And Safety for female journalists, organised by the International Federation of Journalists (IFG) in collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) on Wednesday in Kaduna.

    The facilitator, Mrs. Veronica Ogbole, said the training was important because  safety and security are vital for very Journalism work’particularly because of the hot spots they cover.

    ”We believe Journalists need to get training on security issues, how to stay alive first, because it is when you are alive that you can file any report, dead or wounded Journalist cannot certainly file any report.

    “We desire to have equality regardless of gender in the profession because we believe every citizen, Journalist can contribute to the issues of development.

    “We hope these series of trainings will continue so that we can train as many Journalist as possible.

    “We have started training in other states, but by the time we are able to get funding from other international organisations or Nigerians that are concerned we will expand the training to Journalist all over the country” she said.

    On her part, Rafat Salami, another facilitator who presented a lecture on combating sexual harassment in workplace called on women journalists to always stand their ground in protecting their dignity while discharging their duties.

    Speaking at the event, Adamu Yusuf,  Kaduna  State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), said the workshop was apt because of the importance of safety to the profession.

    He said that journalists should be given equal opportunity and access to required information regardless of their gender.

  • Guber poll: EFCC warns against vote buying

    Ahead of the Saturday gubernatorial and state House of Assembly elections the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has warned against vote buying during.

    The new Head of Kaduna zonal office of the commission, Mailafia Yakubu gave the warning in Kaduna on Thursday when he paid a courtesy call to Kaduna State council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

    Yakubu while calling on journalists to help in the fight against corruption said, vote buying is a big crime that attracts 12 years in prison or an option of fine of N500, 000

    He said the commission has a way of tracking down vote sellers and buyers, but will not disclose such strategy for security reasons.

    This was even as he commended the journalists for making EFCC a success story in the state, adding that, “am a friend to all in order to make my work a success.

    “The election is here, and we will like to tell members of the public that vote buying is a big crime. We all owe the State and the country a duty to expose culprits.

    “Offender of vote buying if eventually found guilty, he or she will spend 12 years in prison or an option of N500, 000 fine.

    “We are ever ready to partner journalists and NUJ in general in the fight against corruption, as well as the fight against vote buying in this election period”. The EFCC Head said.

    Earlier, the NUJ State chairman, Comrade Adamu Yusuf thanked the EFCC boss for the visit, assuring him that the State council is always prepared to partner with the Commission for the benefit of the larger society.

    Businessman remanded over N100m recharge card fraud

    A 30-year-old businessman, Adamu Yusuf, was on Friday in Kano remanded in prison over alleged N100 million fraud on the orders of a Kano Magistrates’ Court.

    Yusuf, who resides in Sabo area of Sagamu in Ogun, is facing a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr Aminu Fagge, who gave the ruling, said the accused should remain behind bars until Sept.12 when the case would come up for mention.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Yusuf Sale, told the court that on March 16, a complaint was received at the Assistant Inspector-General of Police’s office in Kano.

    According to him, on Feb. 28, three men —  Alhaji Sani Ali of Gadon Kaya Quarters, Kano, Sani Hamza and Salisu Haruna — gave the accused sum of N100 million to buy MTN recharge cards for them to sell.

    The accused converted the whole money to personal use, he said, adding that all efforts made by the complainants to take delivery of  the recharge cards or get their money back proved abortive.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The offences contravened the provisions of Section 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

    188,580 Kogi West electorates signs to recall Melaye

    Indication appeared Monday that 188, 580 electorates from Kogi West have signed the recall register form to oust Senator Dino Melaye from the National Assembly.

    The returning officer for the recall of the lawmaker, Adamu Yusuf claimed that out of 360,098 of the total registered voters from the seven local government areas that make up the senatorial district: Yagba, Mopa-Muro, Kabba Bunu, Yagba East, Koton Karfe, Lokoja and Ijumu, 188, 588, signed the recall register constituting 52.3 per cent of the voters in the district.

    He stated that the breakdown of the recall exercise for Yagba East – out of 35,331 registered voters, 18, 374 (52 per cent) signed the recall register.

    Others are Mopa-Moro, 18,356 voters (9,186 signed – 50.04 per cent), Kabba/Bunu 60,522, voters (28,277 – 46.7 per cent) and Yagba West, 35, 966 registered voters, 20,029 signed – 55.7 per cent.

    Lokoja LG, 63, 736 (54.8 per cent) out of 116, 296 registered voters.

    For Koton-Karfe 24,703 (52.77 per cent) and Ijumu, 46,819 registered voters, 24, 238 representing 51.8 per cent.

    He added: “Going by the above figures, it is important to let Nigerians know that we have met the constitutional requirements of 51.1 per cent. Senator Melaye has failed to represent Kogi West so we are calling him back home”.

    All the seven council administrators from Kogi West were present at the event which held at the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat, Lokoja.

    The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara‎, said on Wednesday that journalists were very critical to the success of the nation’s political process.

    Dogra made the remark in Kaduna at a National Colloquium on Elections, Corruption and Road Map to 2019 Elections organised by the Kaduna State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

    The speaker, who was represented by the Chief Whip of the House, Alhaji Ado Doguwa, said journalists have a constitutional mandate to ensure that those in authority remain accountable to the people.

    “The media should be the number one arm of government as democracy is an all inclusive method which carries everyone along.

    “He who controls the minds of the people controls the minds of the society, this is true as the Nigerian Journalists contribute 75 percent to the success of elections,” Dogara said.

    The speaker, however, urged media practitioners to desist from writing fake reports as it only ends up creating problems within the society.

    The National President of the NUJ, Mr. Waheed Odusile, called on political parties to put their heads together so as to move the country forward.

    “We call on all political parties to put their heads together. For a journey, there must be a vehicle and without it there will be no movement” he said.

    Odusie said the Nigerian Constitution has specifically mandated the media to ensure it carried out its mandate by monitoring governance.

    He stressed the need for the media to operate freely and urged members to be mindful of what they write so as to avoid overheating the polity.

    In his welcome address, the Chairman of Kaduna state NUJ, Adamu Yusuf also called on media practitioners to always say the truth and be objective in their reports.

    Yusuf said the journalist is the overseer of the truth and justice.

    “We are expected to adhere strictly to the principle of equity, brotherhood, national interest, global peace and objective reportage even against our erring members.”

  • NUJ organises training for Hajj information managers

    The Kaduna State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Monday said it had concluded plans to hold a retreat developing a robust information system and proper media management of the Hajj.

    A statement signed by the Chairman of the council, Adamu Yusuf said that the retreat, coming up in May, is being organised in partnership with Independent Hajj Reporters.

    The statement, issued on Monday in Kaduna, said that the aim was to develop the capacity of hajj information managers on ethics in hajj reporting.

    It added that the forum would highlight the imperative of having a central information disseminations mechanism during hajj operations.

    “Timely dissemination of information has become imperative in the management of flow of information during hajj operations, as such there is need for hajj information stakeholders and service providers to separate the concept of `needs to know and the right to know’.”

    According to the statement, the event is expected to address the challenges in hajj reporting, and provide impetus for effective information management.

    It said that having accurate impact analysis, efficient data management, objective and accurate media reportage would add value to the pilgrims and the nation.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the retreat would target public relations managers of states pilgrims agencies, image makers of service providers, reporters, NGOs and the national hajj commission.

    NTA reporter, wife killed in fire

    A reporter with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Yola, Adamawa State, Aliyu Zubairu, and his wife, Nazira, died in a midnight fire yesterday, the authority’s General Manager, Adamu Yusuf, has confirmed.

    Yusuf told reporters that the incident occurred in the couple’s home in Shagari Quarters, Yola -South Local Government Area.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that the fire started at 1 am.

    Yusuf urged the deceased’s family and colleagues to take the news in good faith as “no one can question God”.

    The state Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mallam Salisu Mohammad, enjoined journalists to register with the NUJ insurance scheme to enable their families get succour in the event of the unexpected.

    Until his death, the deceased was the NTA reporter covering the House of Assembly and had been buried according to Islamic rites.
