Chelsea’s Adarabioyo meets Sanwo-Olu ahead youth cup in Lagos

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu received Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo on Tuesday during his visit to Nigeria.

The 27-year-old centre-back, born in London to Nigerian parents, is in Lagos ahead of the Tosin Adarabioyo Youth Cup, a grassroots football tournament he is organising in partnership with the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA).

Adarabioyo, who was part of the Chelsea squad that recently won the restructured FIFA Club World Cup in the US, will kick off the youth tournament on July 23, with four participating teams: 36 Lion FC, Mavilon FC, Seamoriow Football Academy, and an LSFA-selected side.

Sanwo-Olu shared photos of the visit and praise the footballer’s commitment to his roots on Facebook.

“Tosin Adarabioyo, who plays for Chelsea, stopped by to visit while he’s in Nigeria,” the Governor wrote.

“It’s always inspiring to meet young Nigerians making their mark internationally, who remain grounded and stay connected to home.”

Although Adarabioyo has represented England at various youth levels, he has yet to make an appearance for the senior national team. Reports suggest he is considering switching allegiance to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

FA Cup: Adarabioyo nets brace as Chelsea thrash Morecambe

Tosin Adarabioyo delivered a standout performance, scoring his first career brace as Chelsea secured a dominant 5-0 victory over Morecambe to advance to the next round of the FA Cup.

The 27-year-old center-back opened the scoring in the 39th minute with a long-range effort from outside the box after receiving a pass from Reece James.

His strike took a deflection off a Morecambe defender, wrongfooting goalkeeper Harry James Burgoyne and finding the back of the net.

Tosin sealed his brace in the 70th minute with a stunning effort assisted by fellow London-born Nigerian player Tyrique George.

The central defender up the ball at the edge of the box, taking a touch to set himself before curling a powerful shot into the top left corner marking his third goal of the season.

Christopher Nkunku, making amends for a missed penalty in the first half, doubled Chelsea’s lead in the 50th minute.

The Frenchman reacted quickest to a parried shot from Burgoyne, calmly slotting home to extend the advantage.

Portuguese winger João Félix completed the rout with a late double, scoring twice within two minutes in the final stages of the game to secure a resounding win for the Blues.

Tosin has become a regular in Enzo Maresca’s squad following Wesley Fofana’s injury, making 17 appearances across all competitions this season.
