FEC approves N13bn compensation, $34m transformer procurement to boost power supply

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved four major proposals from the Ministry of Power in a renewed drive to reform and strengthen the nation’s national electricity grid.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, told journalists at the State House, Abuja, after the FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu, that the measures aim to modernise ageing transmission infrastructure, improve supply reliability, and meet rising electricity demand nationwide.

He said the first approval was the release of ₦13 billion for compensation on right-of-way acquisitions under the Lagos Industrial Transmission Project, funded through a $238 million development loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The project, he noted, is targeted at boosting supply to key industrial clusters in Lagos, which account for a large share of Nigeria’s manufacturing output.

“This funding covers compensation to property owners and communities affected by the transmission lines’ route. Once completed, the Lagos Industrial Transmission Project will ensure that our industrial estates have the dedicated, stable power they need to drive economic growth and create jobs,” Adelabu explained.

The other three approvals, according to him, centre on the procurement and installation of high-capacity transformers to replace weak, overloaded, and obsolete units on the national grid.

The equipment procurement is valued at $34 million, with an additional ₦5.2 billion for associated costs.

The breakdown includes: two units of 150MVA 330/132kV transformers; three units of 100MVA 132/33kV transformers; five units of 60MVA 132/33kV transformers; and two units of 30MVA 132/33kV transformers.

“These transformers will be deployed strategically across the grid to relieve overloaded facilities, improve voltage stability, and accommodate the increased transmission capacity we are building,” the minister said.

Adelabu described Nigeria’s national grid as an ageing system, much of which has been in operation for over five decades and is operating beyond its intended lifespan.

“Many of the transformers, cables and related components are weak and prone to failure. Regular maintenance and timely replacement are essential if we are to achieve a stable, reliable and effective grid that meets the needs of households, offices, small businesses and industries,” he added.

He assured that the latest approvals represent a significant step in the Tinubu administration’s broader power sector reform agenda, aimed at eliminating transmission bottlenecks, reducing system collapses, and laying a foundation for sustainable economic growth through improved electricity access.

My mansion completed before ministerial appointment, Adelabu replies critics

The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has refuted recent report by a media outfit alleging that he (Adelabu) constructed luxury mansion within two years of his appointment, amidst the backdrop of electricity tariff increases.

He said the house was completed far before he was appointed Minister.

A media outfit in a viral video claimed the Minister was flaunting an extravagant lifestyle funded through corrupt means, citing the construction of a new mansion allegedly completed during his tenure.

A statement by Adelabu’s Media Aide, Mr. Femi Awogboro, described the report as false, mischievous, and misleading calculated to tarnished reputation of the Minister.

He clarified that the building project commenced in November 2021 and was completed by August 2023—a month before his appointment as Minister of Power in September 2023.

The Minister backed his claims with dated photographs documenting the construction process, official building approvals, and other relevant correspondence.

According to the Minister, he has long been recognised as a prominent investor in real estate, agriculture, and hospitality, with visible projects across Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, and beyond.

“I began and completed this project before my appointment. I only moved in this year due to work schedules and timing constraints. The attention arose after a viral video of my hosting of popular Fuji musician, Alhaji Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, following the Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election campaign flag-off,” he explained.

He further noted that he has resided in the same location since 2010 when he built and publicly unveiled the original structure during his career as a senior banking and finance executive.

The current property, he said, is simply a redevelopment of the old house, undertaken t

12 years later to accommodate the increased demands of his political engagements.

“Everyone is aware of my long-standing investments in hospitality and real estate, both within and outside Oyo State, which have contributed significantly to job creation.

“Sahara Reporters’ baseless publication is a failed attempt to discredit me and, by extension, undermine the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the Minister stated.

He however called on the media outlet to “immediately retract this false and misleading report,” warning that failure to do so could compel him to pursue legal action.

Nigerians will enjoy uninterrupted power supply before Tinubu leaves office -Adelabu

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu has assured Nigerians that the will enjoy full and uninterrupted electricity supply before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu leaves office.

Towards this end, the President has continued to implement measures aimed at improving power generation, transmission, and distribution across the country.

This assurance was reinforced on Saturday, August 1, 2025, by the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, during the commissioning of the Kwaru 1X15 MVA 33/11KV Injection Substation in the Ikotun-Egbe suburb of Lagos.

This was contained in a press statement the minister issued yesterday from Abuja.

The statement noted that at the event, Adelabu reiterated President Tinubu’s commitment to achieving this vision within the lifetime of his administration.

“The present administration in Nigeria, led by His Excellency, Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with the Renewed Hope Agenda, recognizes that energy is not merely a commodity; it is the backbone of economic growth and job creation,” the Minister stated.

He further explained that “to ensure the growth and sustainability of the sector, the Federal Government of Nigeria continues to implement a multi-pronged approach, which has yielded some remarkable achievements.”

Beyond improving electricity supply to communities such as Abaranje, Isijola, Igando Road, Omoboriowo, Okerube, and surrounding areas, Adelabu emphasized that the project would have far-reaching benefits for Lagos State’s economy.

“This initiative will reduce operational challenges caused by power shortages, provide direct support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), stimulate economic growth, and create new job opportunities,” he said.

The Minister highlighted key achievements under the Renewed Hope Agenda, including “the decentralization and liberalization of the power sector through the Electricity Act 2023, which has activated twelve state electricity markets and led to the development of a National Integrated Electricity Policy after 24 years.” He also noted, “the attraction of over $2 billion in fresh investments to expand electricity access,” as well as “the transition towards full commercialization, which increased the sector’s revenue by 70 percent in 2024.”

Other milestones, according to Adelabu, include “an increase in Nigeria’s installed generation capacity from 13GW to 14GW, with an all-time peak of 5,801.44 MW and a maximum daily energy record of 128,370.75 MWh on March 4, 2025.”

He also mentioned, “the stabilization of the national grid through the Siemens Project, adding over 700 MW of transmission capacity,” and “the successful mobilization of ₦700 billion from FAAC for the Presidential Metering Initiative, alongside a $500 million World Bank DISREP fund, which will add 3.45 million meters to the sector.”

However, Adelabu acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly in distribution, where “loss levels exceed regulatory limits, market remittances fall short, and customer complaints about service disruptions persist. Under my leadership, the Federal Ministry of Power remains fully committed to working with Distribution Companies (DisCos) to address these issues and ensure energy security nationwide,” he assured.

The Minister commendedIkeja Electric for completing the substation project within 12 months, praising their “diligence, proper planning, stakeholder engagement, and technical expertise. Ikeja Electric is one of the top-performing DisCos in Nigeria. We recognize their efforts and urge even greater strides in expanding access and improving service quality,” he said.

“The Federal Ministry of Power remains committed to supporting initiatives that enhance energy reliability and affordability for all customers”, he said

“Mobilizing this level of financing will demand  innovation, coordination and a shared commitment.

“In this room today are many of the institutions and individuals who can help us shape the future of Nigeria’s energy sector, let us take this opportunity to ask hard questions, identify the practical solutions, and develop actionable plans that will make universal access a reality not just in the policy space, but in the daily lives of our citizens by powering our hospitals, our schools, our industries, and our homes,”Adelabu said.

He announced the priorities of the government in power sector reforms to include “addressing the market liquidity issues and initiating required sector reforms”.

“Currently”, he added, “there’s a huge outstanding debt to the Power Generation companies in the form of unpaid government subsidies which stands at about N4trillion as of December 2024.

“The Federal Government is already working out modalities to defray this obligation and to ensure that further obligations are not accrued going forward, the government is working on a plan to transition the sector to a fully cost-reflective regime while implementing targeted subsidies for the economically vulnerable citizens in the country.

“Improving our power generation through recovery of idle capacities and expanding energy mix to ensure energy security, and to dilute the power pool with cheaper and cleaner energy sources,” he said.

Other areas he identified included “Expanding transmission infrastructure to deliver more power, ensuring stability of the national grid to put an end to several grid disturbances and collapses previously observed on the grid, and to further strengthen the coordination and management of the national grid.

“Ensuring viability and performance improvement of the distribution segment of the power sector through strategic programs like the Presidential Metering Initiative and the World Bank-funded Distribution Sector Recovery Program (DISREP)”.

The Minister also said that the Power Ministry is pursuing increased renewable energy through its  rural electrification and energy transition drive, to provide a reliable power supply to unserved and underserved communities.

Through its training institute, the Ministry is also working to improve human capital and local content development in the sector to reduce import dependence, stimulate jobs, and build a homegrown energy industry.

“I assure you”, he continued “that the Federal Government of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is fully committed to this vision and through the Federal Ministry of Power, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, we will continue to champion reforms, promote innovation, and partner with all stakeholders to deliver a sustainable energy future”.

He expressed the appreciation of the Federal Government to the World Bank Group under the leadership of Mr Ajay Banga and the African Development Bank under the leadership of the outgoing Managing Director  of the Bank,  Dr Akinwumi Adesina, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), and Sustainable Energy for All for taking on this mission to connect 300 million people across Africa to electricity by the year 2030 through the Mission 300 initiative, saying, “this ambition reflects our shared belief that energy access is a fundamental issue that must be urgently addressed to unlock economic potential of the continent”.

According to Adelabu, in January 2025 at the Dar es Salaam Africa Energy Summit, President Tinubu joined eleven other African Heads of State in endorsing the Dar es Salaam Energy Declaration and formally committing to the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Mission 300.

“We presented our National Energy Compact, a bold statement of intent and ambition to fast-track access to both electricity and clean cooking for all Nigerians with the aim of achieving universal access by 2030 by increasing the rate of electricity access from 4 percent  to 9 percent per annum and raising access to clean cooking from 22 percent  to 25 percent per annum”, he said.

The Minister of Finance, Chief Wale Edun, who spoke through zoom from Brazil also said that the reforms the government was  undertaking in the power sector were critical towards  unlocking the full potentials of the economy as it would lead to job creation. FG pledges steady electricity supply to military bases

In a move aimed at enhancing the operational capacity of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has pledged to prioritise stable electricity supply to all military bases across the country.

The Minister made this commitment while receiving the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar (DFS), and his delegation during a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Power in Abuja.

The visit was part of broader efforts by the Nigerian Air Force to foster deeper collaboration with the Ministry on power supply reliability for Air Force Bases nationwide.

Adelabu’s Special Adviser, Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Mr. Bolaji Tunji made this disclosure in a press statement yesterday.

According to the statement, the minister described reliable electricity as essential for securing military facilities and safeguarding national assets.

“The President has issued a clear directive to prioritize power to military installations in barracks and bases. It’s a national security imperative,” he stated.

The Minister highlighted inherited challenges such as inadequate metering and outdated infrastructure, noting that contracts awarded since 2003 for metering of military sites are now entering a renewed and more successful phase.

He also revealed ongoing dialogue with distribution companies (DisCos), emphasizing the urgent need for coordinated efforts to resolve power instability issues across all six geopolitical zones.

In a show of commitment, Chief Adelabu cited the recent commissioning of a 3.1MW mini grid to power the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna, as well as ongoing projects in Jaji and other locations.

These efforts, he said, will soon be extended to Air Force Bases, with a long-term goal of integrating renewable energy solutions into military energy strategy.

“A clean, stable and cost-effective energy supply is critical. The military operates as a strategic institution, not a commercial entity—it deserves tailored energy solutions that reflect its national importance,” the Minister affirmed.

Furthermore, the Ministry announced plans to replace outdated transformers with modern alternatives and convene a high-level meeting involving all 11 DisCos and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to craft a sustainable, sector-wide approach.

Responding, Air Marshal Abubakar commended the Minister for his forward-thinking reforms in the power sector, emphasizing that electricity is vital not only to the economy but to Nigeria’s broader national security infrastructure.

He expressed concern over the encroachment on dedicated transmission lines to military facilities and sought the Ministry’s support in eliminating illegal connections and resolving long-standing billing reconciliation issues with Ikeja DisCo.

The Chief of Air Staff reiterated the Air Force’s readiness to collaborate with the Ministry in safeguarding national infrastructure and implementing alternative energy solutions across its bases.

This strategic alignment between the Federal Ministry of Power and the Nigerian Air Force marks a significant step toward energy security, operational excellence, and national resilience.

Giving the highpoint of the meeting, Adelabu said Oyo APC will soon make a declaration on where it stands concerning the bid of President Bola Tinubu to seek a second term.

Adelabu said: “We have met to review the situation and status of the party. It is my personal meeting with the extended excos of the party, which is made up of the State Executive Committee and all the chairmen of all the 33 local governments. I invited them for this meeting and they did. I am very grateful for that. We discussed the progress of the party.

“We discussed the activities and success recorded at the federal level by the captain of the ship, by our leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in making sure that Nigeria is brought to an era of prosperity, an era of peace, an era of harmony, an era of economic growth and industrial development through all his various programmes, from student loans programmes to agribusiness programmes, to business loans programmes, to the Zonal Development Commissions, to all the laudable efforts of Mr. President.

“We met to review it and we are satisfied with his efforts so far. We are quite optimistic that in the next two years, he will hold better promises for Nigeria. We are confident in his efforts and activities. We are also endorsing him for the second time, come 2027. This will be done elaborately in a stakeholder statewide meeting that we are going to organise.”

He said further: “We also review the progress of reconciliation efforts of the party. Where are we coming from? Where are we? And where are we going? And we are satisfied that the party, at the Excos level, has done very well. And they say to whom much is given, much is expected.

“We haven’t seen that. We won’t rest on our words. We say we have a long way to go to ensure that this reconciliation is achieved 100 per cent.”

He added that, he also at the meeting briefed the stakeholders of his activities, as the state representative at the federal cabinet, assuring that many more laudable feats are still achievable in the second half of the ongoing tenure.

“I also reported on my own efforts as their representative at the federal level, as the Honourable Minister of Power. My efforts, my activities, and how it has impacted the lives of Nigerians. The modest achievement we have made. And I also promised that we are going to do more. And we now talked about 2027. Well, we are confident and believe that this party, this state, is going to return to APC.

“All the efforts and what we are going to do is what we discussed. And how we are going to even extend and emphasise democratic principles, internal democracy within the party, so that the best candidates will actually emerge to represent APC at the election of 2027. This is the first stakeholders’ meeting that we are going to be doing.

“I am also going to meet with all my colleagues in the National Assembly: the three senators, the nine House of Reps that we have. But first, the party is supreme. We need to let the party know the steps we are going to take before we start taking those steps. That is what today’s meeting is all about.”

Also, the state Chairman, Chief Abass said the meeting was part of an effort to reconcile the members and build a united front ahead of the election years.

He said: “Well, I’m so delighted to be here today for this meeting at the instance of the Honourable Minister, and it was a very successful meeting. It was about finding lasting peace in the party. I’m quite happy with the outcome of it. The people should expect us to recover our position in the Government House in 2027.

“We have been going around to reconciling the aggrieved members of the party. We have been doing that and we are on course. And today’s meeting has signalled the fact that we are having success at that. We have been doing what we are doing here in silence. This one is just an outward show of what we have been doing behind the scenes.”
