  • Why I want to be Oyo governor again – Alao-Akala

A former governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala, on Wednesday declared his intention to contest for the governorship seat in 2019, saying he was bowing to intense pressure by his admirers.

The former governor made the declaration on Wednesday at his Bodija, Ibadan, residence while receiving members of  the Akala Support Group who paid him a visit.

The group had at a programme held at Premier Hotel in Ibadan on March 29 called on Alao-Akala to re-contest in 2019.

“Patriotic people of Oyo State, for quite some time now, I have been inundated by telephone calls and text messages from well-meaning citizens and subjected to intense pressure.

”  I have been receiving these messages  from Destiny Group, corporate bodies, political associates and friends alike to stage a comeback to the governorship seat in the state.

“Having communed with my creator, the Almighty God, my immediate family and due consultations with critical stakeholders, I do solemnly offer myself to contest for the governorship seat in 2019. So help me God,” he said.

Alao-Akala said he was contesting with a view to consolidating on and surpassing  the achievements recorded so far by Gov. Abiola Ajimobi.

He claimed that he endeavoured “ to put smiles on the faces of people within available resources’’  when he was governor  between  2007  and  2011.

Alao-Akala commended the  efforts of  Ajimobi who had  been  governing  the state in the last seven years.

“Ajimobi’s remarkable programmes and projects in the areas where people find tough to venture into have been impactful on the citizenry such that the people have tagged him ‘Koseleri Governor.

“My fellow compatriots, you can see vividly the similarities in our designations, ‘Oyato’ and ‘Koseleri, ‘both of which are clear evidence of purposeful governance,’’ he said.

Earlier, Dr Fola Akinosun, the Chairman of Akala Support Group, had described Alao-Akala as the most qualified and experienced among all those who had declared interest in the governorship race.

Akinosun, who is a member of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, said this was not the time to experiment in the choice of leadership.

Mr Olu Abiala, a former NLC Chairman in the state, also said the  visit was to appeal to Alao-Akala to listen to the call by no fewer than 5,000 members of the group to contest.

Among those present at the  forum  were human rights activists, labour leaders,  traders as well as  representatives of  youth and  women groups.

  • Speaker buried amidst tributes, tears

The remains of Mr Michael Adeyemo, the late Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly has been buried at his Lanlate home in Ibarapa East Local Government area of the state amidst tributes and tears.

Reports have it that the interment on Thursday followed a funeral service held for Adeyemo (47), who died on April 27.

Our reporter reports that it was a glorious home call for Adeyemo as residents thronged the streets in their hundreds to receive the remains of the late speaker who they described as a worthy representative.

There was, however, a gloomy atmosphere amidst tears and bitter exclamations in the air on arrival at Lanlate.

The remains had left Ibadan for Lanlate on Thursday morning after a special session and lying-in-state ceremony held in his honour by the State House of Assembly.

Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state had at the special session in Ibadan lamented the death of Adeyemo, describing the deceased as a confidant and patriotic partner in progress.

Ajimobi said that the late speaker contributed immensely to the success of the current administration in the state.

Mr Edward Ubosi, the Speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly, also described the late Adeyemo as not just a speaker but also a speaking speaker.

Ubosi, who spoke on behalf of Nigerian Conference of Speakers, noted several contributions of late Adeyemo to the conference and Nigeria.

Earlier, Messrs Olusegun Ajanaku and Gbenga Oyekola, who spoke on behalf of the lawmakers, could not hold back tears while reading their tributes to the deceased, describing the death of Adeyemo as unfortunate and premature.

They said Adeyemo died at a time his full potential had not been fully tapped.

Rev. Stephen Adekunle, President, Ibadan Baptist Conference at the funeral service gave a sermon entitled ‘When your life becomes history’.

Adekunle stressed the need for the living to always prepare to leave” an impactful history”, in view of the inevitability of death.

Among those who attended the funeral service are the deceased’s wife, Oyeronke, Ajimobi and his wife, former Gov. Adebayo Alao-Akala, Chief Moses Adeyemo, the Deputy Governor of the state and wife.

Others were members of State Executive Council, members of National Assembly, members of the State Assembly, prominent political leaders and associates as well as Ibarapa people.

Speakers of Akwa-Ibom, Lagos, Ebonyi, Adamawa, Niger, Kwara, Ondo, Ogun, Delta, Osun and Ekiti states represented the delegation of Nigeria Conference of Speakers at the lying-in-state for the deceased.

  • N11.5bn fraud: Akala, Agboola, Babalola drag EFCC to Supreme Court

A former governor of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, former deputy Chief Whip of the senate, Senator Ayoola Agboola, and a business man, Mr. Femi Babalola, have dragged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the Supreme Court over allegation of N11.5 billion fraud.

The move by the trio stalled the commencement of trial in the case that was scheduled to commence, Monday before Justice Muniru Owolabi of an Oyo State High Court, holden at Iyaganku, Ibadan.

According to the the EFCC, the alleged fraud was committed when the first defendant, Alao-Akala was governor of the state between 2007 and 2011.

Agboola, the second defendant, at the time served as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters while Babalola owns an engineering firm, Pentagon Engineering Services, that executed some contracts during the administration.

At the court on Monday, counsel to Alao-Akala and Babalola, Mr. Hakeem Afolabi, (SAN) moved two applications before Justice Owolabi, informing the court that his clients have filed an interlocutory appeal on the matter before the Supreme Court, seeking an adjournment of the case in order to await the decision of the apex court.

He stated that the applications dated April 7 and filed on April 9, this year, were filed on 10 grounds, praying the court to allow the defendants to go, and “should be told not to return to sin, though they are not sinners.”

He relied on some earlier pronouncements of the Supreme Court, including Amaechi versus Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Pastor Richard Ogunwole (SAN), who is the counsel to the second defendant, Ayoola Agboola, aligned himself with the two applications moved in the court, saying the interlocutory appeal in the Supreme Court would terminate the proceedings at the high court entirely, if it succeeds.

He urged the court to “tarry a little, not resting it,” in continuing with the case so that it would not run on collision course against the apex court.

But the EFCC’S counsel, Dr. Benedict Ubi, vehemently opposed the adjournment, arguing that granting the application would amount to “a violent violation of the Constitution of Nigeria, ” relying on the pronouncement of the Supreme Court in the case of Olisa Metuh versus Federal Republic of Nigeria. He urged the court to disregard the applications and go on with the case.

Justice Owolabi, however, adjourned the case to June 4, 2018 for ruling on the applications, whether the court would await the decision of the Supreme Court or it would continue with the trial while the interlocutory appeal is still pending in the apex court.

The EFCC had on October 11, 2011 filed the matter before Justice Moshood Abass of the court and the defendants were admitted to bail, which they perfected.

Justices Akintunde Boade and Bayo Taiwo, had also sat on the case before the former retired and the latter transferred out of Ibadan Division.

Alao-Akala was admitted to bail in the sum of N5million with two sureties in like sum, while the second and third defendants were also granted bail in the sum of N3 million each with two sureties in like sum.

But the three defendants were re-arraigned before Justice Owolabi on March 5, 2018, over the same matter by the EFCC.

The trio pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

Counsel to the defendants urged the court to allow their clients to enjoy the previous bail condition granted to them, which was granted by the court.

The defendants are facing an 11-count charge of conspiracy, awarding contract without budgetary provision, obtaining by false pretence, acquiring property with money derived from illegal act and concealing the ownership of such property, among others.

The EFCC’s counsel, Dr Benedict Ubi, had told the court that when Alao-Akala was the governor of Oyo State, he awarded a road contract worth N8.5billion between 2007 and 2009 to Pentagon Engineering Services, alleging further that the firm handled the contract on behalf of the 33 local governments areas of the state without budgetary provision.

Alao-Akala, he contended, ordered the supply of drilling machines on behalf of the 33 local government areas worth N3.5billion, saying Alao-Akala purportedly conspired with Ayoola to withdraw N2.9 billion from Oyo State Local Government Joint Account.

Ubi also told the court that Alao-Akala illegally acquired some property on Old Bodija Road, Off Rotimi Williams Road in Ibadan, when he was the governor, saying the alleged offences contravened Section 22 (4) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act and Section 1 (18) of the Advanced Fee Fraud Act.

The EFCC’s counsel, in an interview with journalists after the proceedings, noted that “the normal practice is that when applications of these nature are before the court, the court will entertain them first before any other step is taken. The determination of the application will show us the direction to which we are going.”

He held that an appeal in the higher court “does not operate as a stay. It is not an automatic position. If you raise an application before the court or the higher court, decision will be taken on it. Upon the ruling ordering a stay, then the proceedings will be stayed.”

Counsel to the first and third defendants, Afolabi, also told journalists that the “10 grounds in our applications were to demonstrate that it will be an act of injustice for this court to proceed when the defendants have their appeals, pending before the Supreme Court.”

  • Akala Support Group: Present Akala as your joker in 2019

    *Praises Tinubu at 66

A group of loyalists to former governor Adebayo Alao-Akala on Thursday urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to present the former governor as its governorship candidate in the 2019 election, saying he is the only joker to coast into victory in the much awaited poll.

The group made the call at a rally held at the hilltop Premier Hotel, Mokola, Ibadan.

Attended by former commissioners, members of the state House of Assembly and scores of supporters across the state, the group emphasized that the sterling performance of the party at the federal and in Oyo State necessitates the sustenance of the massive achievements of the Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s administration.

The Akala Support Group also showered encomiums on the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on the occasion of his 66th birthday.

The group, in a communique issued at the end of the rally, said Akala should be called upon to contest in order to “satisfy the yearnings of the people in the state, it is imperative to make a clarion call on His Excellency, Otunba Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala to contest in the governorship election of Oyo state in 2019, so that the succor, humane posture, economic activities, infrastructural development that was once entrenched in governance of the state during his past tenure could be repeated with renewed vigor. The earlier mentioned criteria suit him best. “

It continued: “The joker to winning the 2019 Oyo governorship by any political platform is to present Alao-Akala because of serious yearnings for him by the generality of people in state.

“The clarion call by this body should be immediately transmitted in a formal letter to His Excellency, Otunba Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala.

“There is need to locate the right person for Oyo governorship election in 2019. The candidate should be someone who can increase the pacesetting bar of Oyo State, someone who will sustain, equally re-order both social and political development of the state.

“That, for a way forward in Oyo State in 2019 governorship elections, there is a need to separate the chaff from the wheat among the gubernatorial aspirants as it is presently an all -comer affair where political lilliputians are gladiating without individuals who have high pedigree in governance.”

Those who spoke at the discourse include Oloye Adekunle Adebowale, a former Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) State Secretary Comrade Olu Abiala, one time chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) Comrade Amuda Babatunde, Oloye Agbo Adeyemo, former commissioner, Mrs Kemi Jayeoba-Olorunsogo and Mrs. Falilat Adeyemo.

Alao-Akala was Deputy Governor of the state from 2003 to 2007 and Governor from 2007 to 2011. He contested and lost in 2011 and 2015.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday re-arraigned a former governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala, and two others in an Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan over alleged N11.5 billion fraud.

According to reports the other defendants are a former Oyo State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Sen. Hosea Agboola, and an Ibadan-based businessman, Femi Babalola.

The defendants are facing an 11-count charge of conspiracy, awarding contract without budgetary provision, obtaining by false pretence, acquiring property with money derived from illegal act and concealing the ownership of such property, among others.

EFCC’s counsel, Dr B. Ubi, told the court that when Alao-Akala was the governor of Oyo State, he awarded a road contract worth N8.5 billion between 2007 and 2009 to Pentagon Engineering Services.

Ubi alleged that the firm owned by Babalola handled the contract on behalf of the 33 local governments without budgetary provision.

The counsel further claimed that Alao-Akala ordered the supply of drilling machines on behalf of the 33 local governments in the state to the tune of N3.5 billion.

He also alleged that Alao-Akala conspired with Ayoola to withdraw N2.9 billion from Oyo State Local Government Joint Account.

The prosecutor told the court that Alao-Akala also illegally acquired some property on Old Bodija road, off Rotimi Williams road, when he was the governor of the state.

He said that the offences contravened Section 22 (4) of the Corrupt Practices and  Other Related Offences Act and Section 1 (18) of the Advanced Fee Fraud Act.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Mr Hakeem Afolabi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and counsel to Alao-Akala and Babaloa prayed the court to exercise its discretion in granting bail to the defendants.

Afolabi said that the charge before the court was not a fresh one but a re-arraignment.

He said the matter was first filed on Oct. 11, 2011,  before Justice Moshood Abas and bail was granted after  the defendants met the conditions.

It would be recalled that the defendants had also appeared before Justice Akintunde Boade  and  Justice Bayo Taiwo who was recently transferred out of Ibadan Division.

Mr Richard Ogunwole, another Senior Advocate of Nigeria and counsel to Ayoola, aligned with the submission of Alao-Akala’s counsel.

The EFC counsel said he would not oppose the bail applications.

Justice Muniru Owolabi granted the defendants’ prayers and adjourned the case till April 16 for trial.

  • Oyo 2019: Re-alignment against ruling party will end in futility – APC

Oyo 2019: Re-alignment against ruling party will end in futility – APC

The All Progressives Congress ( APC ) Oyo State chapter, says the on-going re-alignment of forces by the opposition political players in the state ahead of the 2019 gubernatorial election would fail.

This was contained in a statement by Mr Olawale Sadare, the party’s Public Relations Officer in Ibadan on Saturday.

The leaderships of opposition political parties in the state, including the Accord Party, Social Democratic Party, Labour Party and Peoples Democratic Party have initiated a move to regroup against the ruling APC.

The re-alignment is aimed at dislodging the ruling All Progressives Congress ( APC ) in the state in the 2019 elections.

Prominent among the state political leaders in the move were former Gov. Rasheed Ladoja, former Gov. Adebayo Alao-Akala, Mr Seyi Makinde and Alhaji Sharafadeen Alli.

“We are a governing party that has distinguished itself as the only vehicle of good governance, peace and wholesome development desired by the majority of the people of Nigeria, including the good citizens of the state.

“What they are planning is a civilian coup against the electorate but it would not see the light of day for many reasons.

“Most characters involved in the gang-up have had opportunities in the past to impact positively on the lives of the people but they failed as a result of incurable traits of incompetence, selfishness and cluelessness,’’ it said.

The party stated that many of the arrow heads of the alignment are ignorant of how government works from the way they criticize government policies and condemn its projects.

The party stated that Nigerians would not support any alignment, re-alignment or gang-up from the same set of people that plunged the nation into economic mess.

It counselled the sponsors of alignment and those who intend to benefit from it to realize that the effort would end up in futility.

  • Oyo House clears 55 caretaker chairmen, rejects two

The Oyo State House of Assembly on Thursday cleared 55 out of the 57 nominees for the caretaker committee chairmanship positions in the 33 local governments and 35 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that two of the 57 nominees were, however, rejected at the plenary presided over by the Speaker, Michael Adeyemo.

NAN reports that the governor had presented nominees for 28 local government and 29 LCDAs to the assembly instead of 33 local government and 35LCDAs.

NAN also reports that four local governments in Oyo Zone and Oriire as well as the six newly created LCDAs in both areas were exempted due to an ongoing litigation.

The two rejected nominees were Mudasiru Agbaje for Irepo Local Government Area and Adeleke Taiwo for Asabari LCDA in Iseyin.

They were rejected over issues bordering on certificates and capacity to administer a local government.

Agbaje, who was born in 1970 has a 2016 Advanced NABTEB certificate and works at Agbaje Petroleum, while Taiwo, born in 1975, has a 2013 Bachelor of Arts (Ed) degree from Ekiti State University and works as a teacher.

The Chairman, House Committee on Local Government, Chieftaincy Matters, and State Honours, Bolaji Badmos, said the screening was carried out in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Local Government Law, 2001(as amended).

“A total of 57 nominees were screened and 55 were found appointable, while two who did not meet the requirements were stepped down,’’ he said.

The assembly also urged the executive arm of government to forward replacement for the two nominees for screening.

It also called on the executive arm to be gender-compliant in the next chairmanship nominations.

Among those confirmed were Gov. Abiola Ajimobi’s brother, Teslim; son of former Gov. Adebayo Alao-Akala, Olamijuwonlo; and Gbade Lana, son of the immediate past Olubadan of Ibadanland.

  • Alao-Akala: no pact with APC

The governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala, has said neither he nor his party signed any agreement to work with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The statement followed a rumour that the LP has agreed to team up with the APC and its candidates.

The former governor, who spoke through his Director of Public Affairs, Oludare Ogunlana, said the LP and the APC had different ideologies.

Alao-Akala said: “Labour Party has its own ideology and it can never be like the APC. Rather than make sure the people benefited from its project, the present administration continues to empower few capitalists.

“How can we be associated with a dictatorial government? We’ve not forgotten the “Soka” revelation where many people were held captive in a concentration camp for many years. The government has yet to tell us the outcome of the investigation after over a year.”

The former governor said he had been to some parts of the state “and all what the people are saying is that Alao-Akala should come back. Things have gone worse. All what I did as governor still stand the test of time”.

  • I’ll develop agric, says LP candidate

The governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala, has said if elected, he would promote agro-economy to increase the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

The former governor made this known in a statement by his campaign organisation’s Director of Public Affairs, Oludare Ogunlana.

Ogunlana said the former governor will develop the agricultural sector.

“I can boldly say that I have a blueprint that will promote agro economy in Oyo State. The natural and human resources are there. The agricultural sector in over 15 local governments in the state has not been accessed to this level.

“With this, I promise to generate revenue to increase the level of infrastructure provision, create feasible employment without bringing hardship to the masses.

“My administration won’t depend on oil money or federal allocation to run the state.“
