  • Buhari’s 2019 declaration: Obasanjo, IBB, others are not God – Shittu

Mr Adebayo Shittu, the Minister of Communications, says APC’s supporters should not entertain fear that former President Olusegun Obasanjo and other ex-military leaders may block President Muhammadu Buhari’s chance of coming back.

Shittu, who made the remark on Tuesday in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja, said since the former Nigerian leaders “are not God, there should be no apprehension’’.

Buhari had on Monday declared his intention to seek re-election at the closed-door meeting of the National Executive Council ( NEC ) meeting of the party in Abuja.

Buhari said he was responding to the clamour by Nigerians to re-contest in 2019, adding that he wanted to give NEC the honour of notifying them first.

However, Obasanjo and former military president, Ibrahim Babangida ( IBB ), had advised the president not to run in the 2019 poll, asking Nigerians to vote him out should he decide otherwise.

While reacting to Buhari’s declaration, the minister said the action was a welcome development.

“Who is OBJ? OBJ is not God. IBB is not God. Obasanjo was president here, he wanted a third term and he didn’t get it.

“What Mr President did yesterday (Monday), we had done that much back on his behalf; that is the Mohammadu Buhari/Osinbajo Dynamic Support Group.
“So what he did yesterday was just a follow-up to what we had done about three months ago.

“And I want to assure you is that by the grace of God, Mohammadu Buhari will become president the second time,” he said.

He said the president had distinguished himself as his achievement in three years had surpassed what the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Nigeria in 15 years.

“For instance in the area of job creation for youths, no government has ever in one day employed 200, 000 graduates. It has never happened but under Buhari N-Power it happened.

“Through this, he has provided jobs for 200, 000 families spread across the length and breadth of Nigeria.

“Government is still processing the employment of 300, 000 more graduates to make it 500, 000, this has never happened.

“In the areas of transport, works and housing, the last budget of the PDP government was less than N20 billion and most of these monies were stolen; diverted to private pockets.

“In 2017 alone, the Buhari government spent N255 billion on those subject matters; transport, works and housing. So how do you compare?

“Today, government is also building new roads across the South East states with 100 million dollars SUKUK loan; non interest loan from Islamic Development Bank.

“For the first time, government is building new railway from Lagos to Kano, from Kano to Maiduguri, from Maiduguri to Calabar and from Calabar to Lagos. So the records are there,” he said.

  • Minister urges Nigerians to support Social Security Scheme

The Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu, has urged Nigerians to support the Social Security Scheme of the Federal Government to tackle cases of extreme poverty in the communities.

Shittu made the plea at the presentation of an award to him by Mr John Osadolor, the Business Day Regional Director, North, in Abuja.

The minister said that a system should be put in place to meet the informal demands from people who could not fit into any existing government structure, but usually deserve attention.

Shittu, represented by Bolaji Oladimeji, his Special Assistant on Media, said: ”We need to support the social security agencies to take care of the poor in our mist.”

According to him, it is unfortunate that resources of the country can no longer meet the huge demands of even, more fundamental things.

The minister said that the three tiers of government must continue to live up to their obligation in the area of education, law and order, health and road infrastructure.

“Before the present administration, crude oil was selling above 100 dollars and by the time President Muhammadu Buhari came in, it was around 38 dollars.

”More than two years, it was around 38 to 55 dollars and now hovering around 60 dollars.

“Though, government has been overstretched, it must continue to live up to its obligations,” he said.

The minister reiterated the need for public officials to be above board and act as a servant of the people in the course of their privileged opportunity to serve the country.

”Public officials do not get to the public office as a boss, dictator or somebody who have conquered the society.

”We need to make ourselves accessible to those who intend to meet us.

”As much as I can, I made myself available to those who want to see me, listen to their complaints and try as much as possible to facilitate solutions,’’ Shittu said.

  • Electorate should determine Buhari’s eligibility not Obasanjo – Minister

Electorate should determine Buhari’s eligibility not Obasanjo – Minister

The Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, says the electorate should be allowed to determine the eligibility or otherwise of President Muhammadu Buhari to re-contest the presidential election in 2019.

Shittu, who fielded questions from State House correspondents in Abuja on Monday, said it was wrong for former President Olusegun Obasanjo to ask Buhari not to go for a second term.

“Obasanjo as a Nigerian has the right to hold an opinion. If Obasanjo holds an opinion that Mr. President has performed less than it should be, those of us who are in the position to know better has a right to also state the other side which perhaps Obasanjo is ignorant of.

“You see, there are some people who enjoy engaging in sensationalism. With due respect to General Obasanjo, if you take his history over the last 30 years, there is hardly any regime other than his own that he did not criticize except Sani Abacha, who didn’t wait for Obasanjo to criticize him before he was sent to the gulag.

“So many Nigerians know that Obasanjo enjoys this type of sensationalisation. In any case, no matter what impression you have of me, do you have a right to tell me not to contest an election? I mean we should talk like people who are educated, who know our left from the right.

“There are procedures for elections. President Buhari is a member of the APC and the APC has its rules and regulations as to how candidates will emerge. If members of the party feel that the president has not performed well enough, it is for them to show that during the primary election.

“It’s not for anybody to short change Nigerians and prevent people from offering themselves for an election,” he said.

    Cue out audio – Shittu

Shittu also dismissed the assertion that the inauguration of the South West Zonal Office of the Muhammadu Buhari/Osinbajo Dynamic Support Group was boycotted by prominent APC members in the zone.

He said, on the contrary, over 2,000 APC supporters from six states of the South West graced the event.

He stated that inauguration of the office complex and the distribution of Buhari’s re-election campaign caps did not violate the nation’s electoral law as being insinuated in some quarters.

It would be recalled that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, on Wednesday at the Council Chamber of the presidential villa, stopped Shittu from distributing Buhari’s re-election campaign caps.

Shittu said: “It is true that the constitution and the electoral law talk of campaigns starting 90 days before elections, but there is no law stopping announcing intentions. There is a difference between campaigns and intentions.

“It is true that the constitution and the electoral law talk of campaigns starting 90 days before elections, but there is no law stopping announcing intentions.

“So, I plead not guilty to the issue of starting campaign before time. The best thing we could say is that it has been a pronouncement of an intention.

“The man himself has not declared but we are saying we will persuade him to declare his intention at the appropriate time and we are going to support him.”

The minister noted that the inauguration of the South West campaign office had also afforded them an opportunity to launch a booklet titled, “A Compilation of the Achievements of the Buhari Administration.’’

He said the booklet provided Nigerians the opportunity to have verifiable facts in hard copy. (NAN)

Letter to Buhari: Obasanjo engaging in sensationalism – Shittu

Barely a week after former President Olusegun Obasanjo criticised President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, on Monday accused the elder statesman of “engaging in sensationalism.”

He said Obasanjo has no right whatsoever to ask President Buhari to drop his 2019 re-election bid.

Shittu, who was prevented from distributing Buhari’s re-election campaign caps at last week’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said the ex- President  has no right to tell Nigerians who they should vote for in 2019.

The minister said: “Obasanjo as a Nigerian has the right to hold an opinion. If Obasanjo holds an opinion that Mr. President has performed less than it should be, those of us who are in the position to know better has a right to also state the other side which perhaps Obasanjo is ignorant of.

“You see, there are some people who enjoy engaging in sensationalism. With due respect to Gen. “There are procedures for elections. President Buhari is a member of the APC and the APC has its rules and regulations as to how candidates will emerge. If members of the party feel that the President has not performed well enough, it is for them to show that during the primary election. It is not for anybody to short change Nigerians and prevent people from offering themselves for an election.

“In any case, since Obasanjo is no more a member of our party, with due respect to him, it doesn’t lie in his mouth to tell us who among our party members or leaders to contest or not to contest. I think Nigerians should concede this privilege to members of APC to decide the fate of Mr. President when the primaries come.”

Shittu said he was not guilty of breaking any law by distributing campaign materials, adding that all he did was a pronouncement of an intention.

“It is true that the constitution and the electoral law talk of campaigns starting 90 days before elections, but there is no law stopping announcing intentions. There is a difference between campaigns and intentions,” he added.

Workers threaten to shut down NIGCOMSAT over alleged victmisation

The Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government Owned Companies ( SSASCGOC ) has accused the management of Nigeria Communications Satellite ( NIGCOMSAT ) of victimizing workers in the company and warned that unless the victimization and issues of promotion is addressed, it will have no option than to disrupt official activities of the agency.

In a letter to the Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, the union said it may be forced to embark on a three day warning strike unless the issues of promotion and victimization, of its members in the company is addressed.

The letter, dated  January 10, Reference SSASCGOC/LAB/17/2018/9941 and signed by the President, Mohammad Yunusa and the General Secretary, Comrade Ayo Olorunfemi alleged that one of its members is being victimized by the management for refusing to take part in corruption related activities.

The letter entitled: “Re: Operational Modalities in NIGCOMSAT-Our Demands,” the letter read: “Under the directive of the Central Working Committee (CWC) of the Association we refer to our letter No SSASCGOC/HM/FMCT/1/2017/ of 9th Oct 2017 on the above subject matter and observe with dismay the non-response to any of the issues raised.

“We are most concerned about issues that bother on the rights of our members; particularly the issue of promotion. As we speak, one of our members is being victimized  for  refusing to participate in activities that promotes corruption in the workplace.

“We shall be left with no other choice than to embark on a 3 day warning strike to drive home our points, if nothing is done to address all the issues raised in our letter under reference within 21 days from the date of receipt of this letter.”

Speaking with newsmen, Comrade Olorunfemi, condemned the promotion exercise done by NIGCOMSAT management after a long pressure from the union, adding that the promotion was lopsided as important issue of seniority was lost due to earlier embargo and delayed in the process.

He said the union would not accept a situation whereby some senior officers have to forfeit one year due to no fault of theirs but just because the management decided to place embargo on promotion.

“The essence of promotion is to motivate, but when promotion is becoming a de-motivational factor, there will be reduction in productivity and the union would not accept that.”

On the victimization of its member, he explained that an officer, who is the head of account refused a directive from an executive director to pay a money which was not approved and was being victimized.

Comrade Olorunfemi said the present government came into power on the mantra of corruption, saying that the minister should conduct an investigation into this case and ensure that workers who stand up against corruption are not punished.

  • Why NIPOST must brace up

    Why NIPOST must brace up

When the country observed the World Post day in Abuja that Mr Smart Tweador, Chief Executive of Smart Connects, a telecom company, expressed concerns about the operations of the Nigerian Postal Service ( NIPOST ).

According to him the theme of the day — “Transform to remain an enabler of inclusiveness development and an essential component of the global economy’’ — is apt in addressing some of the challenges facing NIPOST.

He said the coming on stream of cellular phones had tremendously affected the operations of the organisation since letter writing has reduced.

“People make calls and send text messages instead of writing lengthy letters, so NIPOST has got to come up with innovative ways to market their products.

“Besides that, you find out that the courier services are more efficient; aside from that transportation companies are now able to carry letters and those are fast means of getting your letters across.

“All you need to do is to call the person on phone and say go to a certain place and collect a letter, so with all other avenues to get across a letter, you find that the fortunes of NIPOST has really been affected.

“Therefore, the onus is now on government to compel its agencies and officials to use NIPOST to transmit official letters.

“It should also make use of its Nipost Ems Speedpost services; and you will see that this will improve the staff performance,’’ he said.

Tweador also said the only way to keep the organisation afloat was through patronage, advising the organisation to brace up to meet the current challenges in a competitive society.

He observed that most government officials that paid private courier companies to carry government mails were not helping the post.

But Mr Bisi Adegbuyi, Postmaster-General, NIPOST, insisted that the agency was leveraging on information communications technology tools to introduce innovative products in line with global trend.

“There is so much to be gained from this transformation, you must satisfy your customers who are with the money. We are reinventing ourselves by leveraging on digitisation.

“With all the strong political support we are getting from the Federal Government and the parliament, they have demonstrated their total commitment and their readiness to pass laws that will diversify the productive space of this country and ensure that the postal revolution is achieved.

“As we stand to meet the United Nations Development Goals, we should not forget postal infrastructure as an enabler of inclusive development and a key platform for delivering public services.

“So, NIPOST is introducing International Postal Service, Track and Trace System, Mobile Electronic Stamp, Address Verification System , Electronic Money Order and  other financial inclusive services.’’ Adegbuyi said.

He said the Address Verification System was to build trust between organisations and individuals and an easy and quick way to identify and authenticate addresses.

“It gives the security agencies unimaginable information to work with and help government plan better.

“All these are to ensure that the post meets current demands of customers and to make the post viable with the collaboration of other government agencies such as Central Bank of Nigeria ( CBN ) and the private sector,’’ he said.

He claimed that NIPOST generated N8. 84 billion in 2016 out of which N4.09 billion was from the sales of adhesive postage stamps, sold under the implementation of the stamping protocol.

“But most government agencies are not using this tool and government is losing a lot of revenue and job opportunities,’’ he observed.

Concerned by his comments, some stakeholders, therefore, called on the Federal Government to compel its agencies and ministries to utilise NIPOST facilities.

According to them, the post has gone to sleep and is no longer in the league of speedy, efficient and effective service delivery.

They insist that for the post to become an agency to be reckoned with once again, government agencies and institutions must be compelled by government to use its facilities.

Similarly, Mrs Caroline Ojo, a civil servant, called on the organisation to look beyond posting of letters and use its spread in all local governments across the nation to utilise its services to improve its revenue generation.

“NIPOST must be proactive and creative; it must make use of its facilities in the nooks and crannies of the country to beat competition.

“Apart from this, it can use the vehicles at its disposal to bridge the gap between villages and cities in the transportation of farm produce.

“There are many possibilities for the organisation, also linking up with small scale businesses and get their patronage, these are areas that the other courier companies will not go to,’’ Ojo said.

Ojo, however, called for attitudinal change and work ethics by the staff of the organisation to move it forward and called on government to review the salary of staff to make them more committed to work.

But Minister of Communications Adebayo Shittu said with the types of infrastructure and trained personnel of NIPOST, the agency could serve as a veritable organisation for development.

According to him, with the vast offices nationwide including assets such as lands and vehicles, NIPOST is a game changer if all hands were put on deck.

Shittu, nonetheless, solicited the National Assembly’s assistance in fast-tracking processes on a bill for an Act to repeal the Nigeria Postal Service Act to provide for the operations and development of postal services, the establishment of Nigeria Postal Commission and for related matters, 2017, presented to it.

In response to this, Dr Chukwuemeka Ujam, Deputy Chairman, Communication, House of Representatives, said the National Assembly would grant a speedy passage of the NIPOST Reform Bill and the Stamp Duty Reform Bill.

The world observes every October 9 as the post day but the date marks the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union, which started in 1874 in Switzerland.

However, the World Post Day started in 1969 at the Universal Postal Union’s congress in Tokyo and it has since then become celebrations worldwide to highlight the importance of postal services.

    I’ll succeed Ajimobi in 2019 – Shittu

The Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, said on Monday he would succeed Abiola Ajimobi as governor of Oyo State in 2019.

Shittu stated this during chat with journalists in Ibadan after a meeting with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Egbeda Local Government Area and Ajorosun Local Council Development Area of the state.

The minister, who is a governorship aspirant in Oyo State, said he would take over from Ajimobi to improve on the good work already started by the governor.

Shittu said he is the most experienced of all the aspirants, having held several public offices and learnt politics from late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“I was a member of the state House of Assembly in 1979 and two-time Commissioner in the state. I have also contested the governorship seat in the state twice before I became a minister.

“These are experiences you cannot buy. Oyo is advanced and sophisticated to be handled by inexperienced administrators,’’ he said.

Shittu dismissed the ongoing re-alignment in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying the party was a non-starter at the state and federal level.

He stated at least 38 road contractors had abandoned work across the country two years before President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office.

The minister said the development had contributed largely to unemployment as several workers, including labourers, bricklayers and iron benders were laid-off.

He alleged that the PDP administration’s negligence and incompetence in handling the Boko Haram at inception was responsible for the present security challenges confronting the country.

“Boko Haram would have overrun the country if not for Buhari’s emergence.

“The Buhari administration on assumption of office had evolved several efficient and effective strategies at reducing the threat drastically,’’ he added.

Speaking on the call for restructuring, he said the APC was presently collating views of Nigerians so as to ensure the people chart a new course for the future.

He said the outcome would subsequently be presented to the National Assembly.

The minister said the National Assembly was the only constitutionally recognised institution vested with powers to amend the Constitution.
