ADEDEJI SEEKING ANOTHER FINE RUN FOR SHARKS

SHARKS’ 2-0 win over Bayelsa United on Match Day 21 ended their four-match misery and brought a huge sigh of relief to the players and technical bench.

That convincing display in Port Harcourt has also heightened the expectations of former junior international, Adeyinka Adedeji, who is now looking forward to their repeat of the early season good run that saw the club at the pinnacle of the log for as much as nine match days.

Riding high on the crest of a 10-match unbeaten wave, Sharks eventually surrendered their invincibility on Match Day 17 in a fixture away to FC Taraba and followed up that loss with three other defeats to champions Kano Pillars and Akwa United (who beat them home and away).

But former Flying Eagles star, Adedeji, who put up an impressive display in Sharks’ home win during which he set-up the team’s opening goal for Abraham Okereke, told www.lmc-ng.org after the encounter that the team’s unity in the face of a bad spell has paid off.

“Before the game, every one of us spoke with one another, we’ve lost four games consecutively and we don’t want to start our home run in the second stanza that way. So we decided to make it count,” said the former Shooting Stars player.

Adedeji, a member of the silver-winning Holland 2005 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, is gradually becoming a regular in the Sharks side after being frozen out of the squad at the start of the campaign partly due to injury and partly due to the good form of Chima Akas. He has high hopes that Wednesday’s win has signaled the start of another good run.

“This is a good start for us, we’ve done it before, going ten games undefeated so we just have to keep our heads up and hope to follow it up with our next game against Lobi Stars and let’s see how it goes from there,” Adedeji remarked.

Super Eagles handlers have dropped injured Gambo Mohammed and Yinka Adedeji from the 2014 CHAN in South Africa.

MTNFootball.com gathered that both players have since left the Eagles training camp.

The highly-rated Pillars star Gambo, who featured for Nigeria at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, has been nursing a hamstring injury, which has kept him by the sidelines since the Eagles resumed training for CHAN earlier this month.

Adedeji also suffered a hamstring injury at the weekend.

Golden Eaglets goalkeeper Dele Alampasu is also set to be in South Africa as third-choice goalkeeper after FC Taraba goalkeeper Ibrahim Pius was axed, but his Eaglet teammate Taiwo Awoniyi did not make the final cut.

Also dropped was new Enyimba signing Mfom Udoh, who was a late call-up to the Eagles after his goals for Akwa United last season.

Nigeria plays Mali on January 11 in Cape Town.

    Adedeji, Gabriel return

After missing the Week 32 Globacom League match against Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) boys in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

Sharks FC of Port-Harcourt duo of Yinka Adedeji and Gabriel Olalekan are expected to make a return into action this weekend.

Adedeji was down with flu before the game while Olalekan missed the action due to card suspension.

The club’s media officer, Peter Abaje told SportingLife that the duo is working so hard to make the trip to Akure this weekend.

He said Adedeji had a light training on his own during Thursday morning training session.

“We are expected them back this weekend. Yinka had a lonely training session on Thursday in order to be in shape before this weekend’s match. Olalekan too is expected to make his return back after serving his suspension,” Abaje told SportingLife.

The club’s image-maker also informed that the duo of Abraham Okereke, Nasiru Hussaini are still out of action due to injury.

They sustained the injury during their 1-1 away draw against Shooting Stars Sport Club (3SC) at Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan last week.

“We have not received clear indication that they will play this weekend. Okereke sustained a dip cut on his head and he is still nursing it while Hussaini has not been cleared by the team’s doctors,” Abaje added.
