How police officers stole N43.1m from currency smuggling scandal – ACP Adejobi

The Nigeria Police Force has disclosed that forensic intelligence uncovered an attempt by some officers to steal N43,160,000 from a smuggling operation involving N74,950,000 in new banknotes allegedly being moved on behalf of clients.

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, clarified the matter on Wednesday, addressing allegations on social media that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was shielding a currency-smuggling cartel.

According to Adejobi, the implicated officers conspired to divert part of the money and assigned one of their own to transport the stolen cash out of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to conceal it until public attention subsides.

Investigations into the scandal are ongoing, with assurances from the police that the culprits will be held accountable.

Adejobi’s statement reads, “The Nigeria Police Force has noted with concern the recent allegations circulating in the media, suggesting that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, is shielding a cartel accused of smuggling suspicious new banknotes from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“The NPF categorically refutes these claims, condemning them as baseless and orchestrated attempts to tarnish the IGP’s reputation and the integrity of the Force.

‘The incident in question, which occurred at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on August 26, 2023, has been thoroughly investigated.

‘”The officers involved – DSP Peter Ejike (a lawyer in charge of Zone 7 Legal Section), Inspector Ekende Edwin, Inspector Esther Okafor, and Sergeant Talabi Kayode, all attached to the Zone 7 Headquarters – were found culpable and sanctioned appropriately.

“These officers, led by Inspector Esther Okafor on the instruction of DSP Peter Ejike, unlawfully arrested Andrew Ejah, an employee of FATFAD Cargo Nigeria Limited, who was conveying the cash sum of ₦74,950,000 on behalf of clients.

“Acting without authorization, they detained Mr. Ejah at the Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja, and deliberately misrepresented the recovered amount as ₦31,790,000.

‘The officers further demanded a percentage of the funds to suppress the case.

“Upon being contacted by the alleged owners of the money, the officers claimed that the sum they had recovered from the arrested suspect was N31,790,000, and requested a percentage of the money to jeopardise investigation and suppress the case.

“Outraged by their actions, the money owners petitioned the Force Headquarters, Abuja and the matter was directed to the IGP Monitoring Unit for Investigation.

“During the process, the cash sum of N31,790,000 was recovered from the officers, who claimed that it was the total money recovered from Andrew Ejah during his arrest.

“After intense investigations and a series of trial before duly constituted disciplinary panels, it was discovered that the officers took photographs of the suspect and the sacks of monies at the point of arrest but claimed the phone they used was damaged and subsequently lost, in an attempt to conceal their misconduct.

“However, forensic intelligence showed that this group of officers conspired and stole part of the money, amounting to N43,160,000, and tasked one of them to move the cash out of the FCT for hiding pending when the heat blows over.

“They thereafter resorted to several tricks and gimmicks in order to cover their tracks. One of which is the spread of this false narrative and misinformation to several online blogs and newspaper platforms.

“These officers have been suspended, being found culpable of serious misconduct, tampering with exhibits, abuse of office, corrupt practice, illegal duty, and acts unbecoming of a police officer.

“The movement of such an amount of money by the alleged cargo company could have been investigated and handled professionally by the police, but the officers were carried away by greed and therefore acted criminally and unprofessionally.

“It is pertinent to note that the circulating false narrative is a sponsored misinformation cultivated by mischief makers who seek to divert attention from the criminal acts of the police officers by attempting to join issues with the Inspector-General of Police.

“The affected officers will be prosecuted upon conclusion of due legal and administrative procedures.

“We urge the public and the media to refrain from spreading this false narrative aimed at tainting the reputation of the Inspector-General of Police.

“Such misinformation undermines public trust and detracts from the ongoing efforts of the current administration to reform the Police Force by eradicating unprofessional elements.”

  • Why Bobrisky cannot be arrested for cross-dressing, by Force PRO Adejobi

Why Bobrisky cannot be arrested for cross-dressing, by Force PRO Adejobi

The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has explained why popular cross dresser, Bobrisky, cannot be arrested for being one.

Reacting to discussions on cross-dressing and sexuality on social media, Adejobi said crimes against nature or natural offenses account for a greater portion of arrests.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Adejobi, said certain cases are hard to prove without evidence and, as such, many who cross-dress are often accused of other crimes, and until proof is found, these individuals cannot be arrested.

Adejobi explained that while the crossdressing lifestyle might not align with societal norms, it is not a criminal offense under the Nigerian law. He emphasised that the police are bound by the law and cannot arrest individuals based solely on their choice of clothing or lifestyle.

He said: There are some cases that are always very difficult to prove. I’m not ruling out that we have many of them. Let us be reasonable, you can’t have someone you want to prosecute without having credible evidences against them.

“I have not read anywhere where crossdressing is an offence in Nigeria. Some of them that are into crossdressing, the allegation is that they are into something else. That’s where the problem lies. We need to have enough proof, credible evidence to show they are actually into that. “All those offences are natural offences in Nigeria and they are punishable under our laws.”

  • Delta: Nine suspects now in custody over killing of six policemen, says Adejobi

Delta: Nine suspects now in custody over killing of six policemen, says Adejobi

Sunday’s arrest of one more suspects by the police has raised the number of suspects linked to the murder of six policemen in Delta State now in custody to nine, Force spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), confirmed yesterday.

He was giving an update on progress in the investigation into the tragic incident that occurred in Ughelli, Delta State on February 23, where the men on a fact-finding mission were ambushed.

Three days later (February 26), other men on a rescue mission were also ambushed, resulting in the death of six policemen and missing of six others.

The fallen officers were identified as Inspector Abe Olubunmi (IRT), Inspector Friday Irorere, Sergeant Kuden Elisha, Sergeant Akpan Aniette, Sergeant Ayere Paul, and Sergeant Ejemito Friday.

ACP Adejobi, who featured on a national television programme last night, said the arrests were made possible through rigorous investigative efforts.

He said: “I can confirm to you that we have arrested nine of the suspects. We had earlier arrested five, last week. We arrested three thereafter and on Sunday, we arrested one.

“From the investigations so far, these were suspects that were directly involved in the incident. Those we have been able to pick up are helping us with the ongoing investigation.

“It may take us time, but we’ll definitely get the required information to prosecute them. There’s no way you can kill any of our men and go scot-free.

“Apart from being a criminal offence, a sin forbidden by all religious groups, it is a disservice to attack and murder our security operatives on official duties in that manner.

“These were not only murdered, the corpses were mutilated and dismembered and video of the scenes were circulated to the public.”

Adejobi vowed that all those connected with the incident, still at large, will be arrested in due time.

He said that the police were working towards the recovery of the missing men.

““We are still waiting to recover all the corpses.  We have recovered three, but three are still missing.”

Dismissing reports of discouragement within the police, the police spokesman said: “Notwithstanding cases of attacks against our men, our men are undeterred to carry out their responsibility of maintaining peace and order across the country.”

Besides, Adejobi said the Inspector-General (IG), Kayode Egbetokun, has been doing a lot to keep the spirit of rank and file within the polce.

“The IGP has contacted the families of the six and the IGP has decided to give them posthumous awards scheduled for April 15.

“On same day, men who have distinguished themselves and are still in service will be honoured. This will be the first time that officers across board will be honoured.  Our fallen heroes will be honoured also.

“All police officers, who have done so well, will be recognised. All the entitlements of the fallen heroes will be fast-tracked and settled.”
