    PRO WRESTLING LEAGUE: Adekuoroye enters record book, wins third match

    2015 World Championships bronze medalist, Odunayo Adekuoroye 53Kg on Thursday put her name in the book of history as she became the first wrestler to win all three matches in the Pro Wrestling League after she defeated highly rated Babita Kumari (Up Warrior) in front of her home fans.

    It was a night to remember at the Guru Nanak Stadium as the two-time Africa Champion representing Team Mumbai defeated both India’s  Babita Kumari  10-2 at the end of the second round.

    Adekuoroye, who started her winning campaigned in the first round narrowly snatched a four (4) point lead before using her height advantage to get the necessary six (6)points in the second round of her bout and continue her unbeaten run in the Pro Wrestling League.

    The 2014 commonwealth gold medalist received a standing ovation from spectators labeling her the “dancing wrestler”.

    Other Mumbai female winner include; United States’ multiple world champion Adeline Gray (69kg) who needed a minute to humble Alina Stadinik Makhinia 10-2 in the 69 Kg while Mumbai Garudu’s Pardeep lost in the 74Kg to Purevjav Unurbat by 1-12 in the first round.

    Adekuoroye had in her earlier campaign defeated two Indian wrestlers namely Lalita Sherawat and Priyanka Phogat.

    Adekuoroye will on Monday meet Dilli Veer’s, LIliya Horishna.

    Nigerian wrestler, Odunayo Adekuoroye helped Team Mumbai Garudu to build on their winning start to the India’s Pro Wrestling League (PWL) as she ran riot to defeat her opponent, Lalita Sherawat of Bengaluru Yodhas 10-0 in the 53Kg in her second match at the Shri Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana on Monday.

    It took the two-time Africa Champion less than three minutes to see off highly rated Indian wrestler and maintained a clean score in the competition. Adekuoroye defeated Sehrawat in the final of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the same category.

    It will be recalled that the 22year old eased past Punjab’s Priyanka Phogat 10-2 in her first match in the highly rated Pro Wrestling League.

    Adekuoroye’s victory yesterday was vital for Mumbai to claim second victory on the trot outmuscling Bengaluru Yodhas 5-2, thus continued their reign at the top of the PWL table with 80 points. CDR Punjab Royals is in second position with 60 points.

    Other winners in the women’s section for Mumbai, Ritu Phogat beat Alyssa Lampe 9-6 in the 48kg division, while Mumbai’s icon player Adeline Gray pummeled Navjot Kaur of the Yodhas 10-0 in the 695kg division. Promising youngster Rahul Aware also defeated Sandeep Tomar 5-0 in the men’s 57 kg category.

    Adekuoroye will return to the mat on Thursday with Mumbai Garudu against Up Warriors where she will battle another Indian wrestler Babita Kumari as she dreams of keeping an unbeaten record.

    Nigerian wrestling sensation, Oduayo Adekuoroye helped her Indian club, Mumbai Garuda beat Punjab Royals 5-2 in their opening game of the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) at the K D Jadhav Wrestling Stadium, Delhi.

    The two-time African Champion eased past Punjab’s Priyanka Phogat 10-2 in the 53kg as Mumbai swept home all the bouts in the women’s section in the competition regarded as the richest wrestling event ever on Thursday.

    Odunayo celebrated her 22nd birthday on the day as she outclassed Priyanka by making full use of her tall height and long reach to not allow her opponent to attack.

    After the fight, the birthday girl showcased her dancing moves to cheer up the crowd that had fallen silent.

    Other Mumbai female winner includes United States’ multiple world champion Adeline Gray (69kg), who defeated Belarusian Vasilisa Marzaliuk 10-2, while the other match involving Geeta Phogat and Sakshi Malik saw an 8-8 ending but the latter won because of more points at a stretch (four).

    In the men’s categories, Odikadze Elizbar (97kg) overpowered Mausam Khatri 8-3, while Georgian Levan Berianidze (125kg) pipped Jargalsaikhan Chuluunbat 2-1 to give the win to Mumbai, who are having K.D. Yadav Stadium as their home.

    Punjab could only win two games in the seven-bout tie with Georgian Vladimir Khinchegashvili (57kg) and Parveen Rana (74kg) registering victories over Rahul Aware and Pardeep Mor respectively.

    Adekuoroye will on Monday lead Mumbai Garuda in their second round of matches against Bengaluru Yodhas at the Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana.

    Two-time African Champion, Odunayo Adekuroye will be departing the shores of the country today to participate at the inaugural edition of the highly rated Pro Wrestling League 2015 scheduled to hold between December 10 and 27 in India.

    The 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medalist who recently signed a two-year deal with an Indian wrestling club, Team Mumbai will be competing against five other teams: Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bangalore, Haryana and Punjab. Each team boasts of nine players, five Indians, four foreign. Out of nine players five has to be male players while four female.

    A total of 18 matches will be played which will be divided into 15 league matches, two semi-finals and the Grand Finale.

    Tagged as the richest wrestling event ever, the league will take place in five cities: Delhi, Ludhiana, Gurgaon, Noida and Bangalore.

    Female coach of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Purity Akuh who will accompany Adekuoroye to India informed SportingLife the athlete needs to wrestle with international wrestlers if she is to have a chance of securing a medal at the Olympics in Rio, Brazil.

    Purity who guided Adekuroye to her bronze medal at 2015 World Wrestling Championship in Las Vegas USA said she needs international matches to get acquitted with different styles in Wrestling.

    “The competition is going to have a great impact on her because she’s going to meet a lot of wrestlers, fighting against professionals and world champions who are also invited. It is a great privilege for her and it would be a continuous competition day-in-day-out to correct her mistakes. Afterwards we’ll come back home and do the necessary plans ahead of the Olympic Games,” Purity told SportingLife on Tuesday.

    In line with the coach, the Technical Director Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Sir Ohaike Demian advised the National Sport Commission (NSC) to invest heavily in Adekuroye as she will make the nation proud at World Class Championships.

    Adekuoroye won a bronze medal in the women’s 53kg freestyle event at the United World Wrestling (UWW)-organised Golden Grand Prix in Azerbaijan a fortnight ago.

    Nigeria’s wrestling sensation, Oduayo Adekuoroye once again did the country proud by winning bronze medal in the women’s 53kg freestyle event at the United World Wrestling (UWW)-organised Golden Grand Prix in Azerbaijan.

    The 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medalist began her campaign at the Baku Sports Hall, venue of the event by defeating two-time world bronze medalist Jong Myong-Suk of North Korea 7-3 in the Round of 16. The Nigerian was however  shocked in the quarter final when the referee declared her opponent, Hellen Marolis of USA the winner despite the match ended on 6-6 score-line.

    The 2015 All Africa Games gold medalist was given a lifeline for a bronze medal fight with a Repechage match where she defeated Roksana Zasina of Poland 7-3. She then went ahead to beat Anjela Doroqan of Azerbaijan by 10-0 Technical Fall (TF).

    Nigeria’s other representative, Blessing Oborodudu could not get to the medal zone as she lost to Anastasija Grigorieva of Latvia 8-5 in the quarter final of the women’s 63kg freestyle event. Oborodudu had defeated Ukraine’s Yuliia Tkach 8-4 in the Round of 16.

    Aside from being the African champion in the women’s 53kg freestyle, Adekuoroye qualified to take part in the tournament as being among the top four in the world in the weight category, while Oborodudu qualified to take part in the competition following her triumph at the 2015 African Championship in the women’s 63kg freestyle.

    2016 Olympics medal prospect, Odunayo Adekuoroye has admitted she had no difficulty in defending her African title at the 11th All Africa Games, Brazzaville 2015.

    After a successful outing at the 2015 World wrestling Championship in Las Vegas, USA, where she secured Rio 2016 Olympics ticket, Adekuoroye still maintained her tempo to win her second Africa title at the Games.

    Adekuoroye successfully defended her title by beating Parfaite Menbau of Congo in the 53kg at the Masamba Sporting Center on Thursday.

    The Commonwealth gold medalist won the African title in 53kg when she defeated Isabelle Sambou of Senegal at the Africa Wrestling Championship in Egypt.

    In a chat with NationSport, Adekuoroye she was able to apply the experienced gathered at the world championship at the All Africa Games.

    “I feel so very great defending my title. I went to the World Championship and won bronze and also qualified for the Olympics. So my president said coming here is just like a film. I believed the experience I also got from my participation at the championship was helpful. I know with God on my side, no one can stop me in Africa and to God be the glory I claimed the gold.

    “I had a very smooth campaign here, my opponents were very easy, none of them lasted more than one minute.

    Adekuoroye is now looking forward to do the country proud at the next Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

    “By the special grace of God, I will perform excellently well. I will continue to train well and prepare myself for the Olympics.”
