  • Olubadan, religious leaders harp on child right protection

    The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, the Catholic Archbishop of Ibadan, Most Reverend Gabriel Leke Abegunrin, the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Abdul-Ganiyy Agbotomokekere, Oyo commissioner education, science and technology, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela as well as his counterpart at the state ministry of women affairs, Mrs Atinuke Oshikoya led other stakeholders to call for better child rights protection in Oyo state in order to secure the future of the country and also create an enabling environment for the overall development of communities.

    Other stakeholders who also lend their voice include, top government functionaries, the state security chiefs, community leaders, interest groups, scholars, teachers, members of the academic community, women groups, trade groups, civil society groups, and various non-governmental organizations.

    The event was the 2018 annual stakeholder’s conference on action against child trafficking and labour to commemorate the United Nations World Day against Child Labour. It held at the J. Travers Place, inside St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Bashorun, Ibadan.

    The event with the theme “Generation: Safe and Healthy” was organized by the Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan.

    While giving his goodwill message as the royal father of the day, Oba Adetunji condemned the high rate of child hawkers within Ibadan metropolis and called for stronger laws prohibiting child hawking and other violations of the rights of children with emphasis on enforcement of such laws and punishment for offenders.

    He stresses that children as the future of any nation require continuous and committed investment to secure their future. He also appealed to parents and guardians to desist from every act to reduce or exposes the children to danger and hazard.

    On his part, the Commissioner for Education, Science and technology, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela said the stakeholders meeting had achieved its objectives by giving adequate information to the people and educating them on the responsibility of every individual in ensuring the rights of any child is not violated.

    According to him, whatever happens today is a product of the past and whatever people do to children today have an effect on their future.

    He said, “The truth is that culture and custom often times cripple the right and privileges of children but the Oyo state government is trying all within its power to ensure that the future of children within the state is not jeopardized. There are conflicting figures on out of school children in the southwest but the World Bank has given a grant to help states curb the menace.

    “It is a five-year project and government is already working on ensuring all children have access to education which is a fundamental right. The way the grant works is that if you don’t perform, you cannot access funds. And I am sure we will soon nip the menace in the bud,” Olowofela said.

    The Commissioner for Women affairs, Mrs Atinuke Oshunkoya also reiterated that the state government is committed to implementing the child rights law and enforcing it across every nook and cranny of the state, adding that every effort of the ministry at present is geared towards ensuring a better future devoid of abuses for every child within the state.

    Oyo state Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Odude, who was represented by the state Command’s Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, stated that the police is aware of the need to protect children and is willing to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure that the Child Rights Law is enforced and violators punished to ensure a better future for the children and a safer environment for everyone.

    He urged people to see the police as partners in progress and work with them to ensure the complete protection of children within the state.

    In his welcome address, the Director of JDPC, Rev. Fr Ezekiel Ade Owoeye stated that it is evident that the problem of child trafficking and labour and other child rights abuses are as a result of poverty, overpopulation in the family, unemployment, lack of information and a willingness to exploit children among other issues.

    He stated that the 2017 stakeholders’ conference revealed that there is a need to create more awareness and campaign, adding that, “it is apparent that many children are still being affected and are vulnerable to child trafficking and labour. There is a need for stakeholders to come up with strategic actions to contribute to curbing the problem so that children in Oyo state can represent a generation that is safe and healthy,” she said.

    The guest lecturer, a child development enthusiast expert, Mr. Taiwo Akinlami who shared his personal ordeal while growing up enjoined parents to be conscious of injecting positive values and views into their children as that would sharpen their world view in their adult years.

    Highpoint of the event was the decoration of notable individuals as child rights ambassadors.

  • Ajimobi secures over N20b for Oyo Basic, Secondary Schools’ education

    The Governor Abiola Ajimobi led government in Oyo State has secured over N20 billion for both ongoing and newly approved projects to enhance the infrastructural and other educational developments in the state.

    Professor Adeniyi Olowofela, the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology stated this yesterday  at the 59th edition of Science Teachers’ Association of Nigeria, (STAN) conference held at The Polytechnic, Ibadan.

    According to the Commissioner, the School Governing Board (SGB) has input N2.5 Billion with Construction of three model Schools to the tune of N1.8 Billion and renovation of 100 secondary schools to the tune of N2 Billion by the state government.

    He continued: “State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB’s infrastructural development consisting of new construction of schools, model schools, toilet facilities, furniture has gulped N3.7 Billion all to the total of N10 Billion.

    “A counterpart fund of N4.6 Billion each from State and Federal government have been approved to the tune of N9.2 Billion to cater for schools’ infrastructure. Also, the State Education Trust Fund, ETF has released a sum of N200 million for technical education in the state coupled with a released of N2.2 Billion for procurement of textbooks for secondary school students and all  to the tune of N21.6 Billion”.

    Speaking further, Olowofela also disclosed that the state government is a beneficiary of $500 Million World Bank grant to tackle the issue of out of school children for the next five years in the state coupled with a last year’s released of N94 Million bursary award by the state government to indigenous students. 

    Speaking on the topic of the conference, “Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Economic Growth”, the Commissioner said Science is emanated from Latin word, Scientos and it means wisdom saying it is pertinent to apply wisdom in every human enterprise which leads to industrial revolution. 

    He noted that riches in the past depend on natural resources to make wealth but today’s riches exploit intellectual resources to acquire wealth. He therefore tasked Nigerian government to diversify from exploitation of natural resources to exploitation of intellectual resources to enhance economic breakthrough similar to economic model of countries like China and other developed countries to become a technological giant.

    Ajimobi’s adviser urges students of striking institutions to remain calm

    The Special Assistant to the Oyo State Governor on Youth Affairs, Bolaji Repete has urged the students of striking institutions in oyo state to remain calm as the state government is doing all within her capacity to ensure that issues are resolved amicably.
    Mr Bolaji while commenting on the strike action embarked upon by institutions in oyo state noted that while the strike action is not that which has made the Government happy, their are concerted efforts to ensure that striking lecturers return to classes, he noted that the ‘disagreement’ would not last for a period too long.
    “I urge the students of the affected institutions to remain calm while the Government looks into resolving all disputes and lingering disagreements that may have led to the strike, while the Government will continue to priotise the welfare of students and youths, we would also continue to put in the front burner, resolving conflicts”
    He further said “what we seek from the students is their continued collaboration with the Governor Ajimobi led Government so we can reopen the Varsities and get things moving on, we appreciate their peaceful nature and hope to see more of it including suggestions on issues affecting the institutions as students are also stakeholders “.
    It would be recalled that some institutions in the state had downed their tools over alleged non-payment  of Salaries by the state government, although Commissioner of Education, Adeniyi Olowofela said the government is already making efforts to meet with the aggrieved staff Union members with a meeting reportedly scheduled for today, Adeniyi noted that the Government is already subsidizing the tuition fee for students in the institution but would do more to promote Education in the state.
    Some of the affected institutions that started their strike action today (Friday) include; The Polytechnic, Ibadan;
    Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo; Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology; The Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa; The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki and College of Education, Lanlate.

    Ajimobi commends BOVAS boss over N16m building donation

    Gov. Abiola Ajimobi has commended Mr Bamidele Samson, the Chairman of  BOVAS and Company Limited, for donating a block of six classrooms  to Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology (OYSCATECH), Igboora.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the  classrooms have the capacity to accommodate no fewer than 300 students.

    Ajimobi, who was represented by Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela, the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology,  said that the donation was worthy of emulation by well-meaning Nigerians.

    He said that the donation was a commendable  contribution to the  educational advancement of  the state, urging the people to support government’s effort at transforming the education sector.

    The governor  said more money would be injected into the sector as soon as government completed the auditing of tertiary institutions in the state.

    Prof. Gbemiga Adewale, the Provost of the college, expressed joy that the company had in less than a year fulfilled its promise to the institution.

    He said that the donation would help the college  to introduce more programmes.

    Adewale, who commended Samson for the gesture, appealed  to well meaning Nigerians to contribute to the  infrastructural development of the institution.

    In his remarks, Samson said he was happy  that the project would impact positively on the  institution.

    Samson, who was represented his wife, Victoria, said the  company would  also furnish the classrooms.

    He added that the company would not relent in its Corporate Social Responsibility.

    NAN reports that Samson was honoured with a community service award in recognition of his contribution to  humanity and donation toward  the advancement of education in the country.

  • Council distributes items to Muslims

    Caretaker chairman of Ido Local Government, Prof Adeniyi Olowofela has distributed food stuff to Muslims at the council Secretariat in Ibadan, Oyo state.

    Olowofela said the distribution was borne out of the state government desire to alleviate suffering of the people, adding that food has been considered as major need of the people in the society especially now Muslims are observing Ramadan fasting.

    Olowofela urged people in the council to continue to support the present administration in its effort at transforming the state.

    “This gesture is from the state Governor Senator Abiola Ajimobi to identity with Muslim community for the month of Ramadan; the items will be distributed to 10 wards across the council areas.

    “Everyone is called to receive food especially Muslims who are observing Ramadan fasting. We have food for all irrespective of group or party affiliation,” he said.

    APC chairman in Ido local government, Pastor Samuel Akintokun described the program as a welcome initiative that gladdened the beneficiaries.

    Among the items distributed are 400 bags of Rice, 300 bags of garri and 150 bags of beans.
