Expert calls for training for nannies

The Principal Partner of Fantasia Education Partners, Mrs Uwaye Soetan has called for proper training on child care and development for nannies and care givers in Nigeria.

Soetan said this in an interview with The Nation yesterday in Lagos, said that the need to adequately prepared today nannies to understand the needs, aspiration and expectation of the child is very germane for child’s growth and development.

She said: “We are socialised by our families, schools, churches and environment. Unfortunately, not all of these institutions have understood the psyche of the child and often times they substitute their will for the child’s will. This leads to children in dissonance with themselves.

She lamented that most children have distorted upbringing and weak personality because they grew up with nannies and care givers that ill prepared and ill-equipped for child’s training.

Soetan said ‘’this is the period most children are closely interacting with nannies because parents have to work. Children are like sponges, soaking up ideas and information from people and things around them. It goes without saying that a sizable proportion of the information they incarnate comes from the nanny. This applies whether the child is at home or at school.

She opined that if our goal is to build a total and balanced child, then we must prepare the nanny adequately to understand the child’s needs to care for adequately, noting that caring for nannies will invariably reflect in the lives of the children.

She opined that if the beautiful once must be born, the impressions they meet on coming to life must show them how to connect with themselves and connect with others.

‘The nanny training is all about showing nannies the world of children and how they can help them piece the puzzle of their lives together, rather than being a hinderance to it’’, she said

  • How to curb TB in rural areas – experts

How to curb TB in rural areas – experts

Improved diagnosis and treatment of Tuberculosis (TB), especially in rural and disadvantaged communities will curb the disease, some experts have said.
They spoke at an international workshop on improving case detection and providing comprehensive care to mitigate tuberculosis and its complications, including Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDRTB) organised for medical personnel by Loving Gaze at St Kizito Clinic in Lekki, Lagos.
The event tagged: “Update on clinical and laboratory methods in Tuberculosis and STIs and laboratory infection control”, was supported by Rotary Rimini, Italy and Rotary Club Victoria Garden City, Lagos.
It gathered medical personnel from mission and private clinics, hospitals, Lagos Catholic Archdiocese School of Health Technology, schools of Nursing and Midwifery from the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
St Kizito Clinic Medical Director, Dr. Alda Gemmani, said the diagnosis of active TB could be complex since its symptoms are similar to other diseases.
Nigeria has one of the lowest detection rates in the world, with only 16 percent of cases being notified to the National TB and Leprosy Control Programme (NTLCP), she said.
She cited a report by the World Health Organisation on TB prevalence in Nigeria, which ranked the country fifth, among 22 high TB burdened countries with over 450,000 new cases and 150,000 deaths yearly.
She noted that the national intervention plan for reducing tuberculosis was effective but that proper diagnosis and increasing cases of drug resistance among the rural and urban poor had become a challenge.
Gemmani said: “St. Kizito Clinic has been in operation in Nigeria for 25 years, serving a number of communities in Jakande-Lekki, Lagos, Idi-Araba of Mushin, and Oreta of Ikorodu and remains committed to strengthening tuberculosis’ diagnosis and care in these communities and beyond.
“St. Kizito Clinic is the only reference for comprehensive diagnostic and treatment TB/DOTS unit with experienced and trained health personnel and laboratory in Eti-Osa LGA. Since 2005, when the TB/DOTS unit was established, up to 1,040 patients have successfully completed anti-tuberculosis therapy and more than 5,810 received diagnostic and other TB/ HI- related care yearly.
Head Medical Microbiologist, The Greater Romagna Hub Laboratory – Cesena, Italy, Prof Vittorio Sambri, underlined the importance of medical personnel and lab technicians training to minimise wrong diagnosis of TB, which has a grave consequence on the patients.
He noted that the more antibiotics were used inappropriately, the more bacteria would learn to defend themselves.
‘’We must be careful with the right regiment and treatment in order to avoid any form of resistance.
“I believe that the antibiotics that are not used in the right way have a lot of side effect, not only to the patients but the whole community because they do generate resistance and that means anybody that will require the antibiotic will have some trouble with getting the right treatment,” he said.
He added that right diagnosis remained vital for the treatment and management of TB in Nigeria.
  • PDP South Africa tasks Buhari on economic recovery

PDP South Africa tasks Buhari on economic recovery

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]outh African chapter of the opposition party, the People Democratic Party, PDP, has again urged the Muhammadu Buhari-led APC government to make haste to restore hope to the hapless Nigerians who had patiently awaited for an enduring roadmap to revamp the ailing economy.
Speaking at a parley in Johannesburg, South Africa, the PDP chapter chairman, Hon. Akpokabayen Ekos made it clear that, given the time so far wasted without seeing any economic road map on the table, it should already be pressing on the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari that time is slowly running out on them.
He said that the beauty of governance is judged by its visible reflections on the people being governed.
“I am admonishing them not to take the patient nature of the good people of Nigeria for granted. This suffering is persistently piercing the bones by the day, and there seem to be no hope of recovery in sight.
“Look, this is not funny any longer, the world out there is watching and are in full expectation, to actually see the “change” that was promised Nigerians in 2015. Failure to deliver on that promise will be more disastrous for our already battered image”, he said, adding that “it still baffles everybody why this government should prefer to fail rather than consult widely with a view to getting the best brains that will help them save this country from imminent depression.
“God blessed Nigeria with men and women of wisdom in every facet of life who are changing the world globally. These are not politicians neither do they belong to any political party, yet here we are with a band of less competent politicians whose poor strategies and policies have only succeeded in institutionalizing poverty in the land, rather than make transformation that will create wealth,” he emphasized.
According to him, it has already become urgently needful for President Buhari to rejig his cabinet and consider giving more slots for competent women in the society, noting that “all over the world today, women have proven to be stronger managers and creators of wealth.
“The current composition of only 16% women in the core governmental affairs is simply a deliberate error in a 21st century world where the greatest world powers are today being led by women and we are now about to witness yet another political revolution by women in the almighty United States of America,” Hon Ekos added.
I think at our level, we need to follow suit for it would soon become a world of total gender equality where acts will be judged by intelligence rather than gender and the early we key into the trend the better, Hon.
On his own part, the PDP chapter Director of Communications, Hon. Emeka Johnson used the opportunity to urge PDP members in diaspora to contribute to political discussions back home, stressing that at all times there is a segment of party faithfuls whose unwavering faith and believe in the tenets, vision and mission of our great party PDP still resonate.
