  • Ogun 2019: Adeola disowns campaign posters

Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, chairman of Senate Committee on Local Content, on Saturday said his attention has been drawn to political campaign posters being posted overnight in some parts of Ogun State, purporting to announce the commencement of his campaign for the Ogun State governor in 2019. He dissociated himself completely from the posters describing them as the ill conceived and ill- motivated gimmick of his political opponents to portray him in bad light.

Adeola said the posting of such posters is clearly a breach of the Electoral Law of Nigeria and against the timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for which such poster pasting is a contravention. Senator Adeola said that currently what is going on in Ogun State are consultations among relevant stakeholders on Ogun 2019, adding that he remains the duly elected senator of Lagos West and will continue to represent them fully in all ways.

“As a law abiding citizen and a law maker of over 14 years standing presently serving at the highest legislative body in Nigeria, I am not one to be seen to break any law of Nigeria in pursuit of any political or other goals. By the electoral law of Nigeria it is illegal for any aspirant for elections in 2019 to begin political campaign as portrayed in the planted poster of me springing up in parts of Ogun State,” the senator stated.

  • ‘It’s wrong to stop Adeola’s governorship ambition’

A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, Jimi Lawal, has faulted those seeking to stop Senator Olamilekan Adeola from pursuing his governorship ambition ahead of the 2019 poll.

Adeola, the senator representing Lagos Westhails from Ogun West Senatorial District and has a declared desire to become the next governor of Ogun State on the paltform of the APC.

Lawal said it was “wrong” for anybody to attempt “stopping or hindering” Adeola, popularly called Yayi, from participating in the forthcoming 2019 governorship race in the Gateway State “on the basis of where he is coming from”.

The former banker and founder of defunct Alpha Merchant Bank addressed reporters at the weekend in Ijebu-Ode.

He noted that anyone or group attempting to stop Yayi would merely be pursuing a “moral issue and not something legal”.

Lawal said the constitution and the electoral law are clear on the matter.

The former banker stressed that one can transfer one’s Personal Voter Card (PVC) from one location to another, thus paving the way for one to vote or be voted for in a new location during general elections.

The APC governorship aspirant from Ogun East expressed the confidence that he would succeed Governor Ibikunle Amosun in 2019.

Lawal added that he was not comfortable with the fact that some people working for Yayi in the state were in disagreement with the governor.

Lawal pledged to embark on far-reaching economic and human capital development, functional education and healthcare system, open the state’s rural areas for accessibility and socioeconomic development as well as return Dangote to Ogun-Waterside to set up a refinery there, if given the mandate to govern the state in 2019.
