Fit again Adeshina eager for action at Niger Tornadoes

Following his return from injury, Lateef Adeshina has said he is waiting ‘in the wings for the right time’ to break back into the Niger Tornadoes setup.

“I am fit again since the start of the second round but to get an opportunity to play may be tough because every player is performing at a very high level,” Adeshina told Goal.

“I’ve not played in any competitive match since I returned because everyone in the team is performing well and you know it’s not advisable to change a winning team. But I will wait in the wings for the right time and if the chance comes now, I will grab it with everything I’ve got by God’s grace.

“Every player in the team knows well that it’s important to be at your best at all time and that’s the reason we all are working hard to contribute and make the team achieve it’s target this season.”

Rice importation: Reps summon Okonjo- Iweala, Aganga, Adesina

The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Trade and Investment Minister, Olusegun Aganga and their counterpart in the Ministry of Agriculture, Akinwumi Adesina, have been summoned by House of Representatives committee on customs.

They are to answer questions pertaining to the Federal Government’s rice importation policy.

The Federal Government policy introduced last year bans any form of rice importation into the country and has allegedly caused the country to lose over N300 billion late last year alone through actions of rice smugglers.

Speaking on the issue yesterday, the Chairman of the committee on Customs, Hon. Sabo Mohammed Nakudu (PDP, Jigawa) said the three ministers are to appear before a public hearing to be organized by the committee on the issue.

Letters, he said, has been written to the three ministers and other stakeholders, by the committee to inform them as well as call for position papers.

According to the lawmaker, the committee’s decision to have a public hearing was based on a House resolution on the issue which was sequel to a motion by Hon. Nasiru Baballe Ila (APC, Kano) on February 19.

The committee chair said hearing would ascertain the level of the rice importation policy, “which has caused ripples in the country and indeed cause a high loss to the government revenue.”

“He cited the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa, which he said was over 103 years old and had remained ANC from inception.

  • Secretary kicks as group adopts Adesina

Branch chairmen of Yoruba Lawyers Association, the Egbe Amofin, at the weekend in Akure, Ondo State adopted Mr. Dele Adesina (SAN) as the presidential standard bearer in the 2014 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) elections.

But the group’s Secretary, Mr. Ranti Ajeleti is kicking against Adesina’s adoption.

It is the turn of the Egbe to produce the Bar President to succeed Okey Wali (SAN). Some prominent members of the association have shown interest in the job.

Adesina was adopted at a meeting in Akure, Ondo State on Saturday. About 20 branches, including 15 branch chairmen and secretaries, representatives of the other branches, benchers, SANs, Attorneys-General and over 200 members of the association endorsed Adesina for the plum job.

They noted that Adesina has the highest number of endorsement letters from the branches, adding that he is the most qualified to fly the flag in the election.

The meeting also set up a steering committee to pilot the group’s affairs pending the ratification of its draft constitution at its general meeting slated for February 1, next year.

Ajeleti is contending that only eight branch chairmen and four SANs were at the meeting, adding that this number is inadequate “to do a binding adoption of any candidate for the election.”

Ajeleti said the group would meet in January to conclude discussions on the adoption of candidates for the election.

He queried the validity of such adoption without the report of the Duro Adeleye-led committee set up by the group. “Where is the report of the committee?” he asked.

He made the call in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital on Monday at a Development Round Table for Partnership to end Hunger in Africa.

Obasanjo said the private sector and other stakeholders must play key roles to make the proposal to work and succeed.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the roundtable session was moderated by Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina.

The African Union, Food and Agricultural Organisation and the Lula Institute convened the meeting with the theme “Unified approach to end hunger in Africa by 2025.”

Obasanjo said for Africa to eradicate hunger and poverty, “agric-business must replace farming.’’

He explained that the sector needed more financing, modern equipment, research and business approach to increase food production.

He said such an approach would yield the required dividends with only a few hectares of land that would add value to Africa’s staple foods.

“The fight against hunger must involve every stakeholder, including the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).

“This effort should not be left to the governments alone; it should include the traditional institutions, the CSOs, the private sector as well as religious leaders and everybody, “the former Nigerian leader said at the forum.

Former President of Ghana, Mr. John Kufuor said there was need for research to modify and add value to food production on the continent.
