  • Man docked over alleged fraud

    A 37-year-old man, Tope Olusanya, was on Tuesday brought before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court over alleged fraud.

    Olusanya whose address was not disclosed is facing a count charge of fraud.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Johnson Okunade, told the court that the accused committed the offence sometimes in April 2018 at about 10:30 am, in New Modern School area of Ado-Ekiti.

    Okunade said that the accused fraudulently obtained N300, 000 from one Racheal Balogun, on the pretext to dig a borehole for her, but failed to do so.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 421 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N200, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    Adegboye adjourned the case until February 15 for hearing.

  • Court remands Ekiti pupil for stabbing schoolmate to death

    An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand a 16-year-old pupil, Timilehin Kehinde, who allegedly stabbed his schoolmate to death.

    Timilehin, a student of Ado Grammar School, Ado-Ekiti, is facing trial for allegedly stabbing his colleague, Matthew Favour, in the chest on December 6 after school hours.

    They were said to be testing the efficacy of a charm believed to prevent penetration of weapons like cutlass, knife known in local parlance as “okigbe.”

    The incident forced an early closure of the school before vacation for Christmas/New Year festivities.

    The suspect was arraigned in court on Wednesday after spending one week in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of the State Police Command.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Adesoji Adegboye, said he needed advice from the state Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) and ordered that the accused be kept at the State Children Correctional Centre.

    The accused, according to him, will be cooling his heels at the Centre pending the receipt of advice from the DPP’s office.

    Adegboye subsequently adjourned the case till January 18, 2019.

  • Two men in court over cultism, possession of dangerous weapons

    Two men, Adeniran Adewale and Adeniyi Iyanu, was on Thursday brought before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged cultism and possession of dangerous weapons.

    The accused, Adewale, 20 and Iyanu, 18, whose addresses were not provided, are facing a two-count charge of belonging to a secret cult and being in possession of dangerous weapons.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Johnson Okunade, said the accused committed the offences with one other still at large on Nov.12 at Olokemeji, Odo-Ado in Ado-Ekiti.

    Okunade said the accused confessed that they were members of a secret cult, “Aiye Confraternity’’.

    He said that the accused were found with 15 live cartridges and four cutlasses.The offences contravened Sections 64 and 430 (1) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2012. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    Mr Emmanuel Sumonu, counsel to Adewale and Mr Peter Ogunkile, counsel to Iyanu, urged the court to grant their clients bail in liberal term.

    In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, granted each of the accused bail of N200, 000 with one surety each in like sum.

    The case was adjourned until Dec. 28.

  • Man in court over alleged possession of hemp

    A 30-year-old man, Fabamise Ademayowa, was on Wednesday brought before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged possession of hemp.

    Ademayowa, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of possession of hemp.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Johnson Okunade, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov. 20 at Temidire Street in Oye-Ekiti.

    Okunade said that the accused was caught with 70 wraps of hemp.

    According to him, the offence contravened Section 5 of the Hemp Act.

    The prosecutor urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the file and assemble his witnesses.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Mr Timi Omotosho, Counsel to the accused, urged the court to grant his client bail, promising that he would not jump bail.

    In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, granted the accused bail of N200, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    Adegboye adjourned the case until Dec. 21.

  • Man remanded for ‘defiling’ own daughter

    An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday remanded a 57-year-old man, ‎Daramola Kehinde, in prison for allegedly raping his daughter.

    The accused of no fixed address is facing a charge of rape.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Johnson Okunade, told the Court that the accused committed the offence on August 10 in Iyin-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the accused raped and incest his 16-year-old daughter which cause her death.

    He said the offence contravened Section 31 (2) of Child Rights Law and Section 214 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The prosecutor urged the Court to remand the accused in prison pending legal advice from office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    The plea of the accused was not taken.

    The Chief Magistrate Court, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, ordered the remand of the accused in prison and adjourned the case until November 2 for mention.

  • Man arraiged for ‘stealing’ at eatery

    The Police on Monday arraigned a 22-year-old man, Olatunde Kehinde, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged theft.

    The defendant of no fixed address is standing trial on a count charge of theft.

    The prosecutor, Insp Johnson Okunade, told the Court that the defendant committed the offence on September 17 in Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the defendant, who was a staff of Captain Cook Eatery stole the sum of N93,000 property of one Olaitan Adewale of Captain
    Cook Eatery in Ado-Ekiti.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor asked the Court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty, and his counsel, Mr Olatunde Olayemi, urged the Court to grant the defendant bail, promising it that he would not jump bail.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, in his ruling granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety and adjourned the case until October 29 for hearing.

  • Father, Son remanded over alleged armed robbery

    An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Monday remanded Chidi Christian (22) and Okoye Christian (44)‎ in prison over alleged armed robbery and possession of firearm.

    The defendants, whose addresses were unknown, are facing a two-count charge of armed robbery and possession of firearm.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Johnson Okunade, told the Court that the defendants committed the offence on September 18 in Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that Chidi Christian went to Ekiti State University, Female hostel and robbed some students, Olaniyi Elizabeth, Olawunmi Olajumoke, Alagbe  Oyinkansola and Oginni Oluwatoyin of their money.

    Okunade also alleged that firearm was found in the possession of the father, Okoye Christian‎.

    He said the offences contravened Section 1 (2) (a) and (b) and Section 3 of Robbery and Firearm Special Provision Act 2004.

    The prosecutor urged the Court to remand the defendants in prison pending legal advice from office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    The pleas of the defendants were not taken.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, ordered the remand of the defendants pending the issuance of legal advice.

    He adjourned the case until October 3 for mention.

    Police arraign teenager over motorcycle theft

    The police on Wednesday arraigned a teenager, Idowu Oluwole, who allegedly stole a motorcycle behind the Fayose Market in Ado Ekiti.

    Nineteen-year-old Oluwole, whose address was not disclosed, appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on a count charge.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp Johnson Okunade, the teenager and others at large stole a Haojue Suzuki motorcycle marked QF 393 ADK.

    Okunade said that the accused and the others stole the motorcycle worth N150,000 from Mr Oluwafemi Ogunsakin at 4p.m on Dec. 12 at Pharouse Filling Station behind Fayose Market in Ado-Ekiti.

    The teenager, however, pleaded not guilty, and was granted bail by Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye in the sum of N100,000 with a surety in like sum.

    Adegboye adjourned the case until Jan. 31, 2018, for hearing.

    Two men appear in court for fraud in Ekiti

    The police, on Wednesday, arraigned two men, Oba Matthew and Ajayi Ayodeji, at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged fraud.

    The accused, Matthew, 41, Ayodeji, 24, whose addresses were not given, are facing one-count charge of fraud.

    The Police Prosecutor, Insp Johnson Okunade, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov. 28 at about 9:p.m. in Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the duo, under a false pretext and with the intent to defraud, obtained N700,000 cash from one Nwaoye Ifeanyi.

    Okunade stated that the offence contravened Section 419 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The accused counsel, Mr Odunayo Okunade, countered the motion of the prosecutor, that urged the court to remand the accused in prison custody to enable him study the case file until the adjourned date.

    The counsel argued that since it was a bailable offence, the court should exercise its discretion accordingly and pledged that they would provide reliable sureties if granted bail.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, in his ruling, granted each of the accused bail ‎in the sum of N200,000 and each with one surety in like sum.

    Adegboye adjourned the case to Dec. 18 for hearing.
