  • APC convention: How Ondo delegates triumphed, by Adetimehin

The Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed delight on the outcome of last Saturday’s national convention of the party at the Eagles Square in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The party’s State Chairman Ade Adetimehin said Ondo delegates opted for “a workable option” to prove those expecting an implosion wrong.

A statement by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Prince Alex Kalejaiye, said APC was aware from the outset that some political parties were waiting on the side line to take advantage of any major crisis that might occur.

Adetimehin said the party guided its strategies accordingly.

The state chairman also applauded national delegates, particularly those from Ondo State, for what he called “good and civilised” conducts at the event.

He said the party avoided the imposition option and its pitfalls and employed “the option of consistent consultations and interactions”.

The statement added: “We were fully aware of the negative impact on, and the implications of playing God and imposing candidates recklessly, while taking aspirants for granted.

“Therefore, we opted for interactions and negotiations. This we did consistently while assuring aspirants that no one would be left behind; everybody would be carried along. That was the secret behind our success story.

“In addition to our strategy, the aspirants demonstrated uncommon love for and commitment to the party, which led to their willingness to drop their personal aspirations in the interest of the party.”

  • APC chief drums support for Akeredolu, Adetimehin

A chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Timothy Felder Olatunji, has urged members to support the Ade Adetimehin-led Executive Committee (exco) in Ondo State.

Olatunji, who hails from Ileoluji/Okeigbo Local Government, described the process leading to the emergence of the exco as transparent to strengthen the party.

Olatunji, a senatorial aspirant, in a statement enjoined members “to ignore moves by desperate politicians to cause disaffection in the party.”

The statement said: “While congratulating our amiable Chairman of APC, Mr. Adetimehin and other members of the newly-elected Executive Committee of our great party as they take over the mantle of leadership, may I say that no process could have been more transparent than what brought the new party leadership in.

“I consider this an ample opportunity that must be celebrated by well-meaning members of our party, especially as we inch towards 2019 general election. No doubt, Adetimehin, an engineer, is a tested and trusted party man, who has demonstrated a great deal of loyalty and hard work. I, therefore, have confidence in him and his team to take the party to the next level.

“I use this medium to congratulate our governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu SAN, for the leadership and determination to unite the party.

“At a time like this in the life of our party, all that is required is support for good leadership as exhibited by Akeredolu and Adetimehin. Both men have strived to bring together members of the party by creating platforms for participation in governance and party activities.

“May I, therefore, use this medium to call on all stakeholders in the party to unite and remain supportive of the governor and the party leadership as we march towards the national convention aimed at completing the chain of the credible processes that had been achieved at the ward, local and state levels.”

  • Court affirms Adetimehin as Ondo APC chair

•’We are justified by the verdict’

A Federal High Court in Akure yesterday struck out a suit challenging Ade Adetimehin as the Ondo State Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC).

It refused to reinstate ex-Chairman Isaac Kekemeke.

The suit was filed by Olugburo Akinola, on behalf of the former Vice Chairman of the party, Gboyega Adedipe and ex-Legal Adviser Desmond Adejumola.

The court agreed with Charles Titiloye, counsel to APC and the defendants that it lacked jurisdiction to hear the suit.

It upheld the seven grounds of preliminary objection filed by Titiloye that issues raised by the plaintiffs were matters within the internal affairs of APC and the internal means of resolution.

The court said: “The plaintiffs are the real violators of APC constitution, having failed to first exhaust means of resolving their grievances as provided for by the party’s constitution before bringing the action before the Federal High Court.”

Adedipe and Adejumola were adjudged by the court as meddlesome interlopers, who lacked the locus standi to challenge the removal of Kekemeke without joining him in the suit as a necessary party.

The court agreed with Titiloye that the matter was too contentious to be started by originating motion; rather, the plaintiffs ought to have filed the suit through a writ of summons.

It contended that there was no registered party in Nigeria by the name ‘APC Ondo State’, and struck out the name of the 4th defendant.

The court ruled that the proper court to hear the case was the state High Court and joinder of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), an agent of the Federal Government.

“An ancillary relief in the suit will not confer jurisdiction on the Federal High Court to hear the case.”

Justice F.A. Olubanjo struck out the case.

Titiloye hailed the judgment, describing it as a reference point in administration of parties.

He said it would increase the disciplinary power of parties over their members.

Akinola said his clients would file a stay of execution and appeal the judgement.

He said the judge refused to rule on the substantive suit that would have dealt with the issue at stake, stressing that his clients would not accept the verdict.

APC said yesterday that the verdict of the court justified the fairness of the national leadership.

The party, in a statement by its Director of Media & Publicity, Steve Otaloro, said Kekemeke was removed from office based on the allegations levelled against him by members, following his activities before and during the governorship election last year.

It said: “Before the governorship election, the party machinery were against Kekemeke -the youth wing, women’s wing and elders’ forum. They passed a vote of no confidence in him, judging by the way he conducted himself before the primary election.

“Members were angered by his conduct, which they described as being biased. They accused him of supporting a particular aspirant, using the party machinery against other aspirants.

“No doubt, he has a right to support an aspirant, but using the party machinery as the chairman to do so to the detriment of others was where he erred.

“He was also alleged to have worked against APC during the governorship election.

“This protest prompted the setting up of a three-man fact-finding committee headed by Abayomi Adesanya. Kekemeke turned down the invitation of the committee during investigation. Having found him guilty, the committee recommended his removal in its report submitted to the National Working Committee.

“However, the national leadership asked Kekemeke to step aside, pending when it would analyse the findings of the committee. It, therefore, appointed Adetimehin, who was the deputy of Kekemeke, to step into the office of the chairman in an acting capacity.

“Rather than allowing the committee to conclude its investigation, Kekemeke headed for the court, using his cronies, Gboyega Adedipe and Desmond Adejumola, as a decoy to upturn the decision of the national leadership.

“It is unfortunate that it is the court that pointed out to Kekemeke and his cohorts that they are “the real violators of APC constitution, having failed to first exhaust means of resolving their grievances as provided for by the APC constitution.

“It is important to reiterate that Governor Akeredolu has called on members, who went on sabbatical leave, to return to the party, despite the obvious anti-party roles they played, particularly during the governorship election.

“Many of these category of members have returned to our party without any rancour.

“To prove that Governor Akeredolu was not out to witch-hunt anyone, he was instrumental to the return of Mr. Olusola Oke, a lawyer, who defected to Alliance for Democracy (AD) and contested as its governorship candidate.”

The statement said the party was still open to all, particularly members outside for one reason or another.

  • Ondo APC leaders know fate April

Ondo APC leaders know fate April

The Federal High Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, will, on April 17, deliver judgment in a suit challenging the selection of Ade Adetimehin as the Acting Chairman of the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the suspension of Mr Isaacs Kekemeke as the party’s state chairman.

The plaintiffs – Messrs Gboyega Adedipe and Desmond Dejumola through their counsel, Olu Akinola – had approached the court to nullify the decisions taken at a meeting of the APC State Executive Council (SEC) where Kekemeke was suspended as the party’s chairman last year.

He noted that the meeting did not form a quorum.

Kekemeke was indicted by a disciplinary committee set up by the party’s SEC, earlier this year, for alleged anti-party affairs.

Counsel to Adetimehin and the APC, Femi Emodamori, argued that the two plaintiffs lacked the locus standi to institute the case because they had defected to the Alliance for Democracy (AD) while the duo had resigned as the party’s state Vice Chairman (Ondo Central) and the state Legal Adviser in 2016.

Emodamori prayed the court to dismiss the suit since the plaintiffs had also failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the APC executive meeting where Kekemeke was suspended was not properly constituted.

Lawyer to the first, second and third defendants, Charles Titiloye, also said the case lacked merit.

He prayed the court to see the plaintiffs as busybodies who left APC for another party and failed to join necessary parties in the matter.

At the resumed hearing, counsel to the plaintiffs, Akinola, argued that the disciplinary committee set up to investigate Kekemeke was unconstitutional.

The lawyer averred that the committee was not constituted in line with the party’s constitution.

Justice J. A. Olubanjo adjourned the matter till April 17 for judgement.

  • Ondo: Ex-SSG emerges Chairman

FORMER Secretary to the Ondo State Government, Hon. Isaac Kekemeke, on Saturday emerged as the State Chairman of All Progressive Congress (APC).

Kekemeke, who served under the administration of former governor of the state, late Dr. Olusegun Agagu, narrowly won with 499 votes beating the runner-up, Engr. Ade Adetimehin, who scored 497 votes.

Other contestants for the chairmanship seat include Barrister Sola Iji, Prof. Wole Aderounmu, Adetimehin and Prof. Abiodun.

Security was tight at the venue of the congress, which was held at the multi-purpose B-Kay Complex in Akure, the state capital.

Addressing reporters shortly after the poll, the State Chairman of the Congress Committee, Chief Femi Pedro, described the event as successful.

Pedro, who was a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, said over 1,070 delegates from the 18 local governments and 303 wards in the state participated in the congress after they were duly accredited.

According to him, “The congress was hotly contested by five candidates, but there were two major candidates, the winner, Hon. Kekemeke and the runner-up, Engr. Ade Adetimehin.

“Though, there were argument before the commencement of the congress, but we were able to resolve these issues. This is usual and excepted in a political gathering but you know in APC, we know how to handle our issues.”

On other elected positions in the party, Pedro said there was consensus arrangement for other State executives post, which he said have been zoned.

Pedro noted that with the emergence of the new executives for APC in the state, the days of the ruling Labour Party (LP) in the Alagbaka Government House are numbered.

The new APC State chairman, Kekemeke described his victory as a new dawn for the progressive party in the State.
