  • College employs 17 Fellows

To reward excellence, the Adeyemi College of Education (ACE), Ondo, has absorbed 17 candidates of its fellowship programme into its workforce temporarily.

The graduate fellowship programme was introduced in 2017, whereby brilliant graduates of the college are retained under the Teaching Assistantship scheme.

The scheme provides for the engagement of the best graduating student in each department with a minimum of 4.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) for a period of two years.

Speaking with reporters in Ondo, its Provost, Dr. Samuel Akintunde, said the scheme was one of the programmes initiated to discourage students from engaging in vices capable of truncating their studentship and to encourage them to be dedicated to their studies to reap the reward of excellence.

He said fewer than 18 of them were involved in the “teaching fellowship scheme” by which one of them later got internship in Turkey.

“The teaching fellowship is not a full employment as the stipend paid is paltry. It is meant to give the beneficiary opportunity to start a Master’s degree programme and have experience of teaching as assistant lecturer for two years to boost their prospect for jobs as lecturers anywhere in the world.

“It is expected that those who are able to find alternative employment amongst the teaching fellows before the expiration of the two years are free to move ahead in their career. Participation in the scheme does not translate to automatic employment for the beneficiary”.

  • College thanks lawmaker for varsity upgrade bill

Top management team of the Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) Ondo has paid an appreciation visit to the lawmaker representing Ondo Central District, Senator Tayo Alasoadura for facilitating the upgrade of the college university status.

Last Thursday, the Senate passed a bill converting the college to a University of education after a long wait.

Alasoadura, who is also the Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), sponsored the bill at the upper chamber.

The Provost, Prof Olukoya Ogen, led the high-powered delegation from the college.

He thanked Alasoadura for playing an active role in ensuring the passage of the bill.

He said posterity would remember the lawmaker for his determination and courage.

“We are glad to hear the soaring news.  We are solidly behind Senator Alasoadura in his efforts to render services to humanity.  We will be celebrating him very soon for this gesture,” Ogen said.

Alasoadura said he was pressured by his late wife, Adetayo, who is from Ondo Town, which hosts the college, to follow up on the bill.

Accordingly, he said he had to lobby his colleagues to ensure the passage of the bill.

“The bill would have been passed six months ago but there was no financial provision because of the delay in the signing of the 2018 budget,” he said.

He said N2 billion had been approved for the take-off of the University, assuring them that it would be listed before the Senate go on long break.

Alasoadura disclosed that efforts were on to also upgrade the Federal College of Agriculture, Akure (FECA) to a University for the benefit of the community.

The Students Union President, Zubair Taofeek thanked Alasoadura for ensuring that the institution attainted higher academic status.

  • Students’ enrollment threatens Teacher Education – Provost

The Provost, Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) Ondo, Prof Olukoya Ogen on Tuesday examined critically the issue of enrolments in College of Education in Nigeria.

According to him, the issue is a major problem threatening the continued existence of teacher education in Nigeria at this present time.

Ogen spoke at the 9th annual National Conference of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) Southwest Zone holding at the Adeyemi College, Ondo.

The theme of the conference is “Teacher Education and Students Enrolment in Colleges of Education in Nigeria”.

The Provost traced the problem to harmonization of all entry examinations into the United Tertiary Matriculation Examination where Students were given the option of choosing between three to six institutions.

Out of this, the don noted that there was an assurance to be offered admission in one.

However, Ogen said “With continued modification of the unified examination, prospective students are given the opportunity to choose their most preferred and would consider other tertiary institutions only as a last resort.

The Provost however acknowledged harmonizing matriculation examinations, but stressed that implementation may sabotage the good intention of the policy.

To sustain teacher education, Ogen pointed out that the Nigerian society at different levels must properly perceive the college of education system to encourage candidates to seek admission into the colleges of education willingly and not as a last resort.

He expressed the need to urgently rescue the college of education system from imminent collapse.

The COEASU President, Nuhu Ogirima noted that besides the University system, which usually registered a huge subscription between 95 and 97 percent, about two million candidates applying through JAMB, subscription to other tertiary institutions through the same UTME is ‘abysmally’

According to him, the overwhelming preference for University education is not suggestive of an outright distaste for other institutions.

The three-day COEASU Southwest Conference where various papers were presented by eminent scholars was chaired by NIEPA Director-General, Prof Lilian Salami who also delivered a key-note address to participants.
