  • INEC to engage 14, 000 adhoc staff

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is to engage 14, 000 adhoc staff for the conduct of the forthcoming general elections in Gombe.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Alhaji Umar Ibrahim, made the disclosure on Thursday in Gusau.

Ibrahim told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the adhoc staff would be deployed to 2,985 polling units and voting points across the state.

“They include NYSC members, students of the federal tertiary institutions, ex-corp members, staff of federal ministries, departments and agencies, lecturers of federal tertiary institutions and retired judges.

“We have begun training for serving corps members while training of other categories of adhoc staff will commence from Jan. 23.

“I am appealing to traditional rulers and religious leaders to call on their subjects to treat corps members and other election duty staff posted to their communities fairly.

“They are patriotic citizens on national duty and should be given every support,” he said.

He, however, advised members of the public to report any breach of electoral guidelines by the personnel to the appropriate quarters.

Ibrahim said that nobody should take laws into his hands.

  • No recruitment of adhoc staff for 2019 election – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has distanced itself from the news making the rounds that it would recruit adhoc personnel to man the 2019 general elections.

INEC therefore urged the public to disregard online publications that it is recruiting ad hoc staff ahead of 2019 elections.

The Commission in its online publication said it was aware of some social media publications telling the public that it would recruit 100,000 ad hoc personnel for 2019 general elections.

It said that information in the publications were false and should be ignored.

“This information is false. The general public should disregard it because INEC is not recruiting at the moment; don’t be swindled,’’ it stated.

The commission advised the public to contact it for proper information on any issue concerning the electoral process.

INEC recruits 9,000 ad hoc staff for FCT election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has now recruited the required number of ad hoc staff for the April 9 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the FCT, Prof. Jacob Jatau disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

NAN recalled that INEC FCT had on March 16 postponed the area council election from March 19 to April 9 due its inability to recruit over 9,000 ad hoc staff required for the conduct of the election.

“I can confirm to you that the commission is fully ready for the April 9 election.

“We have been able to recruit the additional ad hoc staff to meet the shortfall that made us postponed the elections.

“The commission has also trained the additional adhoc staff recruited for the exercise.

“All is now set for the conduct of free, fair and credible election in the FCT,’’ Jatau said.

Mrs. Ndidi Okafor, the INEC Deputy Director of Publicity in FCT, told NAN that the commission had recruited 9,374 ad hoc staff for the exercise.

Okafor added that the commission had also recruited and trained extra personnel in addition to the 9,374 ad hoc staff to address likely shortage on Election Day.

“The ad hoc staff are employed from the serving National Youth Serving Corps (NYSC) members, students of the University of Abuja and ex-NYSC corps members from our data bank,” Okafor said.

Okafor called for the collaboration of stakeholders to ensure credible and violence free election comes April 9.

INEC adhoc staff immature, says candidate

Lagos State all Progressives Congress (APC) governorship running mate Dr Idiat Adebule has described as immature the ad hoc staff engaged by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for last Saturday’s elections.

Speaking with reporters at Ward 029 in Iba, Lagos, after casting her vote, Mrs Adebule said more must be done to get the best out of them.

“Where I did my own voting, I must tell you that those guys (Ad hoc staff) there were not committed. Their disposition to people and level of tolerance is equally not encouraging. At every opportunity, they got annoyed, the level of knowledge of some of them cannot comprehend the responsibilities they are being given. At every step, we have to be guiding them.

“I think generally, the Youth Corps members still need to be trained. We can’t continue to use ad-hoc; I’m looking at a process where we will improve more than what we have now. I cannot say precisely as I’m speaking with you which direction the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should take, but I know this process must be reviewed; we must re-evaluate the process we are using now. We must improve on it; we must get it to a standard that is acceptable worldwide,” she said.

Dr Adebule expressed confidence in INEC to ensure free, fair and credible elections, urging the people to support the commission.
