Wike admits supporting PDP candidate with N2bn

The Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has admitted that he supported the Edo State candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Osagie Ize-Iyamu, not militants, with N2 billion.

Wike spoke yesterday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers capital, through the state’s Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George.

The Rivers governor, who is a former Minister of State for Education, also denied the insinuation that he and his Delta State counterpart, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, mobilised militants to rig the Edo governorship election in favour of the PDP.

Wike reacted to allegation by Edo Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, that the two Niger Delta governors donated N2 billion for the postponed governorship poll, claiming that he (Wike) never made such financial donation.

He said: “Governor Wike has no links with militants in the region and anywhere else in the country. He has only given moral support to the PDP candidate in Edo State to overcome the ineptitude and dysfunction the All Progressives Congress (APC) imposed on the people.”

The Rivers governor also declared that he would continue to give moral support to democratic forces, not just in the crude oil and gas-rich region, but across Nigeria, to bring better life to people of the country.

Wike called on the people of Edo state to ensure that whenever the governorship election held, they would stand firm in defence of their sovereign right to vote for the PDP.

The Rector of the Ajah, Lagos-based academy, Mr Olufemi Ajayi, who spoke at the school’s second matriculation ceremony, promised to train experts that would use their skills to solve security challenges.

  • Taxi driver admits responsibility for death of hotel staff

Contrary to allegations that the police in Benin, Edo State, was responsible for the death of a staff of Protea hotel who was in their custody, a 29-year-old cab driver yesterday admitted that he accidentally killed the middle-age man along Sapele road in the state capital.

It will be recalled that accusation of extra-judicial killing was slammed against the Edo Police command over the death of the man, identified as Chibuike Edeh.

The deceased family and friends have accused the police of killing their son, even as the police have maintained that the victim was knocked down by a car when he attempted to escape while leading investigators to where he hid the sum of N42, 000.00 he allegedly stole from the hotel.

The cab driver and his Toyota Camry 2.2 car, marked FUG 93-JD (EDO), were in the custody of Adesuwa Police Division, Sapele road, Benin, yesterday.

Narrating how he accidentally knocked down the victim, the driver stated that about 3pm last Saturday, he had earlier taken a female passenger from UNIBEN in Ugbowo to her destination en route Sapele road, by the Edo State Library, when a man unexpectedly left the walkway and ran into the road.

He explained further that he rammed the car into the man before he was able to bring the vehicle to a halt a few distance from the spot.

“As I dey drive along Sapela road after Mega Filling Station small, around Edo State Library, so, na him one boy just run enter road once, as he enter road na, I come hit am.

“As I hit am na, na him people come dey shout, that fear now I come escape for life make them nor come kill me.

“I come go hide, after everywhere don calm down, na him I come report myself to the police,” the cab driver stated in pidgin English.

Narrating his experience inside police cell, the cab driver noted that “ as I dey inside cell, the President wan slap me, na him I beg am say na small change dey with me.

“He come asked me say wetin bring me come? I come tell am say na one boy I hit for road, say the boy jumped enter road.

“E be like say them don first come tell them say the boy wey them just remove from cell na na go jump enter motor for road.

“Na him them come dey tell me say the boy don first dey complain for inside cell say him don tire for life oh. Say he wan die he wan find wetin wan kill am. Na him dem come sorry for me say na me go jam am”.

Chibuike Edeh was arrested last Friday after the management of Protea Hotel, where he worked, accused him of stealing N42, 000 belonging to a customer.

His body was later found along Sapele road by a good Samaritan who took him to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) where he was confirmed dead.

  • …Jonathan admits he didn’t speak with King of Morocco

…Jonathan admits he didn’t speak with King of Morocco

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday admitted that he never spoke with King Mohammed VI of Morocco, contrary to earlier claims   by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that he did.

President  Jonathan consequently ordered a probe into the controversy on whether or not he had a telephone conversation with the Moroccan king.

His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, called the controversy a regrettable furore  and said it was brought  about in the first instance by misinformation.

Abati, giving the President’s side of the story, said: “It is true that President Jonathan has been speaking with some African leaders to seek their support for Nigeria’s candidate for the position of President of the African Development Bank (AfDB).

“In continuation of his efforts in support of the candidacy of the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, for headship of the AfDB, President Jonathan indicated that he would like to speak with the King of Morocco, the President of Algeria and the President of Egypt.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was consequently directed to make necessary contacts with the embassies of the three countries and arrange for President Jonathan to speak with their leaders.

“Since that directive was given, President Jonathan has spoken with the Prime Minister of Algeria and subsequently sent Vice President Namadi Sambo to Algiers as Special Envoy to follow up on his discussions with the Algerian Prime Minister on support for Nigeria’s candidate in the coming elections for the AfDB Presidency.

“The President has, however, not yet spoken with King Mohammed VI and President Al-Sisi of Egypt as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must know.

“President Jonathan has, therefore, ordered the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Wali, to urgently undertake a full investigation of the claim which emanated from the ministry that the President spoke with King Mohammed VI.”

The investigation, the statement  pointed out, was  to identify all those who were responsible for  ”the unacceptable act of official misinformation which has resulted in an unnecessary diplomatic row with another country and national embarrassment.

“It is also expected to unveil the motives of the culprits. President Jonathan has also ordered that prompt and commensurate disciplinary action be taken against the culpable person or persons.”

While awaiting the outcome of the investigations, President Jonathan  also urged Nigerians to disregard “the vituperations of opposition elements who have, true to type, latched on to the regrettable faux pas as a fresh opportunity to unpatriotically denigrate the government of their country and advance their irresponsible quest for victory at any price in the coming elections.”

Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Ministry last week  said King Mohammed VI snubbed President Jonathan who had requested for a telephone conversation which he (Mohammed) suspected was to solicit his support ahead of this month’s presidential election against General Muhammadu Buhari of the APC.

But in a swift reaction, the ministry’s counterpart in Nigeria insisted that  President Jonathan indeed spoke with the king.

Ugbade admits to tough U-20 job

Flying Eagles assistant coach, Nduka Ugbade has described the task of trying to mould the next set of U-20s, as herculean.

The new technical crew of the team led by Coach Manu Garba is saddled with the responsibility of forging together a formidable team ahead of the African qualifiers.

In a chat with 365footballnews.com, Ugbade reckoned that they understand the level of expectations from Nigerians.

“It’s an herculean task, a very strong challenge to us because at this level, you are not going to expect anything other than perfection and Nigerians will not be waiting for anything like failure,” he said.

The Flying Eagles are scheduled to start their preparations ahead of the African qualifiers with a two-legged friendly match against Morocco on April 9 and 11 respectively in Casablanca.

Ugbade was part of the U-17 squad that emerged victorious in the United Arab Emirates, winning Nigeria’s fourth FIFA U-17 title last year.

  • Courts admits pictures of ex-Governor Idris’ houses

A Lokoja High has admitted as exhibits the pictures of the houses allegedly belonging to former Kogi State Governor Ibrahim Idris.

Former House of Representatives member, from Kabba/Ijumu, Dino Melaiye, had sued the former governor for what he described as a first degree corruption allegedly committed by Idris.

The seven houses, all in Abuja, include a home at 99 Kwame Nkrumah Street, Asokoro; Gubabi Royal Hotel, Wuse Zone 5; Dreamland Suites, Jabi; Summerset Suites, Maitama; Palmac Hotel, Maitama, Executive Suites and Grand Ibro Hotel.

Arguing on the admission of the evidence as exhibits, counsel to the defendant, Pius Akubo (SAN), objected to the documents as evidence.

He averred that the photographs of the buildings, which were tendered, had been tampered with.

The lawyer argued that the writings on the pictures were done with long hand, which he said was not the same with the one sought to be tendered.

Akubo urged the court to reject the documents to enhance fair hearing.

He described the documents as an ambush on the opponent.

But counsel to the plaintiff, Benson Igbanoi, argued that the documents should not be rejected because of its relevance to the case.

  • Salisu Yusuf admits to Enyimba’s goal-scoring difficulties

Salisu Yusuf admits to Enyimba’s goal-scoring difficulties

Enyimba Head Coach Salisu Yusuf has admitted his side are facing goal-scoring difficulties after Sunday’s goalless draw against Warri Wolves but expresses confidence it will be over soon.

In the Matchday 5 game on Sunday in Aba, Salisu Yusuf watched Ukeyima Akombo, Ndubuisi Ekwuribe and Turba Benjamin throw begging chances away early in the first half. Against a very physical Wolves outfit, Enyimba had cleverly found several ways through the rash and aggressive defending of their opponents. But while they found ways through the visitors backline, putting the ball at the back of the net was an altogether different proposition.

At the end of the first half, there was general unease in the stands, but no real cause for alarm. It seemed then, to the fans and even the officials, that The Elephants still had time, time to get the breakthrough they so badly needed.

But in the end, the second forty-five minutes wasn’t enough. Not even the additional six minutes the referee was forced to add for the time wasting the visitors resorted to as the game neared the end.

Salisu Yusuf rose from the bench and walked away slowly to the dressing room, his disappointment, evident on his face. The second half had not provided the relief he sought. As he walked away, some fans expressed their displeasure, others seemed indifferent. No, not indifferent. Too shocked to react. Three home draws last season had cost Enyimba the league title and the wounds from those draws against Kano Pillars, Akwa United and Lobi Stars have not fully healed.

Finishing goalless against Warri Wolves at home so early in the season was simply too much to take.

When EnyimbaFC.net spoke to Salisu Yusuf afterwards, he readily admitted there is a problem. The team are not scoring goals as they should.

“Yes, there is a problem,” Salisu said. “We create several chances in a game but don’t convert them. It is something we are very concerned about and we are trying to stop it. But is this a major crisis? The answer is no. It’s something that is natural in the game of football.”

Salisu then revealed that it was of particular worry to the players themselves.

“It is really disturbing the players and they have been working very hard in training. As a matter of fact, it is what we have practiced in training through out today. We will keep working on it and very soon we will get it right.”

“You know that technique is the bedrock of football. Without good technique, goal-scoring will remain a problem for any team. A player has to know when to take a low shot or a high one, or curl the ball across the face of goal. Even in heading, a player has to know how to flick or turn his head in order to guide a ball into the net, so this is what we are all practicing.

“If we work hard on it in training and the players get it right, during a real match situation, it will become easy for them to convert the chances they create. Since our opening game, there is no match where we have not created enough chances to win by four or five goals, but that has not happened so we are not going to stop working on it.

“I can assure you that in a short time, we will get it right and every match we play, you will see lots of goals. The players are being taught how to handle pressure during a match so once they overcome that and improve their techniques, we will be unstoppable, I tell you,” Salisu said.

Enyimba were dogged by poor finishing throughout their campaign last term. It is what prompted the signing of the likes of last season’s highest goal-scorer Sibi Gwar, Ukeyima Akombo, Andrew Abalogu and Fidelis Saviour this season.

So far though, these additions haven’t appeared to be making a difference in the attack of The Elephants. It is unsurprising and logical because these new players will need to adapt and gain an understanding of their new environment. They need time to blend. But sadly, time isn’t what Enyimba has much of. The league is understandably a marathon, not a sprint but the first round of every league campaign defines who finishes as champions.

Enyimba’s next three games are against Kaduna United away, Kwara United at home and Gombe United away. These are tricky fixtures because while they may seem easy on paper, the potentials for upsets are profound. Salisu Yusuf and the rest of his technical crew must make sure that the team uses these games to not only fine tune their tactics and technique, but most importantly, improve their goal-scoring.

  • Onazi admits to Lazio pressure

    Onazi admits to Lazio pressure

Nigeria midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi has expressed happiness at his steady progress at Serie A club, SS Lazio.

The 20-year-old, usually on the sidelines at the Rome club, has suddenly become a first-team mainstay in Vladimir Petkovic’s side, and has identified his good form with the national team as one of the reasons he has performed so well at his club in recent weeks.

“Everyone knows that things suddenly got better for me at my club after the Nations Cup. The competition changed my life in all ramifications,” Onazi said.

The 20-year-old then went on to discuss the difficulties he faced before breaking into the Lazio first-team. The Italian league is very difficult to play in. It is even more difficult for young players to cope but things have been going well for me. I have a few friends with a lot of experience at the club. They speak to me and advise me on the areas where I make mistakes.

“Also training alongside important players like Hernanes, Mauro Zarate, Cristian Brocchi and Miroslav Klose is something that is an experience for me. I have grown a lot as a man and as a footballer and I intend to continue in this path,” he added.

On the Super Eagles’ recent 1-1 draw against Kenya in a 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifier in Calabar, the former El Kanemi Warriors star insisted the African champions will get back on track with a win against the Harambee Stars in June.

“I think even the Kenyans surprised themselves with how well they played against us. They also know things will be different when we meet again. We know what is at stake here and I am sure we will win in Kenya if we play as well as we can,” he said.

Onazi, a former under-17 and under-20 star made his senior debut in 2012 and has scored once for the Super Eagles.

Yobo admits Kasimpasa’s tie was tough

Nigeria skipper Joseph Yobo played his first match for The Yellow Canaries in the Super League this calender year and stated that the game was tough even though Fenerbahce defeated Kasimpasa 3- 1 on Sunday to move within 3 points of league leaders and bitter rivals Galatasaray.

In his post-match comments, Yobo has admitted that despite the three points in their kitty and the scoreline, the match was far from easy.

He told the official website, fenerbahce.org: ”It was a tough match, we conceded an early goal. We are a very good and strong team and this was reflected in our character. ”

Going further, the Nations Cup winner said he was following the performance of Fenerbahce while in South Africa and thanked the fans for their support throughout the game with Kasimpasa.

Note that Kasimpasa’s only goal was scored by Kalu Uche after two minutes. He is now the top scorer in the Super League with 13 strikes.
