  • Six docked in Ekiti for cultism, illegal arms possession

    Six persons on Wednesday appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court for alleged cultist and illegal possession of firearms.

    The accused persons are Adefemi Tosin, (25) M, Yusuf Ayobami, (31) M, Mohammed Ibrahim, (29) M, Adejumo Ola, (29) M, Monday Queen, (29) F and Asaolu Damilola (31) M.

    The defendants, whose addresses were unknown, are facing a two-count charge of membership of Eye Confraternity secret cult and being in possession of firearm.

    The prosecutor, Insp Johnson Okunade, told the Court that the defendants committed the offence on August 5 in Ado-Ekiti.

    He said the defendants had confessed that they were members of Eiye Confraternity secret cult.

    Okunade said that unlawful firearms were found in the possession of the defendants.

    The offences contravened Section 4 (i) of the Secret Cult Code and Section 3 (i) of the Robbery and Firearms Act, 2012.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges, while their counsel, Mr Chris Omokhafe, urged the Court to grant them bail, promising that they would not jump bail.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, granted the defendants N200,000 bail with two sureties each in like sum.

    Adegboye ruled that one of the sureties must be a civil servant.

    He adjourned the case until September 19 for mention.

  • Two arraigned for stealing phone, cash

    Two men, Oribamise Sunday, 26, and Kayode Abayomi, 26, have appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court, for allegedly stealing and receiving cell phone.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Johnson Okunade, said that the accused, whose addresses were not disclosed in Court, committed the offence on Jan. 15 at about 1600hrs, at Oke Bola area, in Ado-Ekiti.

    Okunade said that the accused, Oribamise Sunday, stole one Infinix Hot 5 Lite valued at N46,000, MTN, Glo and Airtel recharge cards valued at N40,000 and cash of N86,000 total valued N172,000 properties of Mr Ojo Michael.

    He said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap.16 Vol.1 Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The prosecutor also alleged that the second defendant, Kayode Abayomi, unlawfully received the Infinix Hot 5 Lite from ‎Oribamise Sunday, knowing fully to be stolen.

    Okunade said the offence contravened Section 427 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    He asked the Court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty, and their counsel, Mr. Yemi Adebayo, urged the Court to grant the accused bail, promising it that
    they would not jump bail.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, in his ruling, granted each of the accused bail in the sum of ‎N100,000 with one responsible surety in like sum.

    He adjourned the case until June 13 for hearing.

    Motorcyclist arraigned for killing boy, 19

    A 32-year-old motorcyclist, Afolabi Olaniyi, has been arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged manslaughter.

    Olaniyi allegedly drove dangerously on the public highway and caused the death of a 19-year-old boy, Oluwafemi Samson, within the magisterial district on December 28.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Johnson Okunade, told the court that the accused, who rode a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with registration number (Ogun) JGB 349 VX, committed the offence at 02.30 pm in front of Captain Cook Eatery, Fajuyi area of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, on that date.

    He alleged that the motorcyclist drove negligently and dangerously in a manner that is dangerous to the public causing the death of a 19-year-old boy.

    The prosecutor averred that the offences contravene Section 18(5) and 7(1) of the Road Traffic Laws (RTL), Law of Federation.

    Chief Magistrate Aderopo Adegboye, who gave the ruling on Friday, granted the accused bail for N200,000 with two sureties.

    He ordered that both sureties must be employed and that each of them must pay N100,000.

    Olaniyi, whose address was not provided at the court, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of driving dangerously to cause manslaughter and driving without a licence.

    The case was adjourned till February 14 for mention.

    Two arraigned over theft of church property

    Two men, who allegedly burgled a cleric’s residence and stole church property, on Thursday appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on a three-count charge.

    Aladejare Adekunle, 29, and Agbetiloye Olaoluwa, 24, whose addresses were unknown, were charged with conspiracy, burglary and stealing.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Johnson Okunade, the accused and others at large burgled the residence of Rev. Michael Olukayode on July 19 and December 1 and stole church property worth N221, 500.

    He said that the accused committed the offences at the Christ Shekinah Ministries premises, Igbaletoro, Oke-Ila in Ado-Ekiti.

    The prosecutor said stolen items had been recovered from the accused.

    According to him, the offences contravened Sections 411, 145 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, granted them bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties each.

    Adegboye ordered that one of the sureties must be a senior civil servant.

    He adjourned the case until January 17, 2018, for substantive hearing.

    Man in Court over alleged N2.1 million fraud

    The Police in Ekiti State have arraigned a 38-year-old man, Olubolamo Kolade, at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged fraud.

    The defendant of no fixed address is standing trial on a count charge of fraud.

    The prosecutor, Johnson Okunade, told the Court that the defendant committed the offence between the months of May 2015 to August 2017 in Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the defendant fraudulently stole the sum of N2, 171, 120 property of Self Reliance Economic Advancement Programme (SEAP), ‎Ado-Ekiti office.

    Okunade said that the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Law of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor asked the Court for adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    His counsel, Mr Seun Oyebanji, urged the Court to grant his client bail, promising that he would not jump bail.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N400, 000 with two sureties, one of whom must be a civil servant.

    Adegboye adjourned the case until December 20 for hearing.

    Woman in Court for breaking husband’s nose

    For allegedly headbutting her husband in a street fight which resulted in injury to his nose, a 38-year-old wife, Mrs. Kehinde Alade, was on Monday charged before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court.

    Police Prosecutor, Johnson Okunade, told the court that the headbutt she gave her husband, Mr. Adebodun Alade, resulted in blood gushing out from his nose after which he landed in a hospital.

    Okunade revealed that the accused committed the offence at about 8.00 pm on October 19 at Onala Area A, off Afao Road, Ado-Ekiti under Ado-Ekiti Magisterial District.

    The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a charge of assault. Apart from battering his nose, Mrs. Alade is also facing trial for allegedly engaging her husband in a public fight.

    The offence, according to the prosecutor, contravened Section 252 and punishable under Section 355 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor asked for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

    The accused pleaded not guilty, and his lawyer, Mr. Busuyi Ayorinde, urged the Court to grant her bail, promising she will not jump bail.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Adesoji Adegboye in his ruling, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum ‎and adjourned the case till December 4 for further hearing.

    Six docked in Ekiti for alleged cultism

    Six men on Tuesday appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court for alleged involvement in cultism.

    Police Prosecutor Caleb Leranmo told the court that the defendants committed the offence at about 10am in Omuo-Ekiti in Ekiti East Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

    He gave the names of the defendants as Adewale Akosile, 30, Jimoh Lukman, 25, Amusa Jamiu, 25, Timothy Thomas, 23, Sefun Akinola, 26 and Ojo Akinola
    20.

    Leranmo said that the defendants, on the said date, unlawfully paraded themselves as a member of “Ashanti secret society” which they used to terrorise the community.

    According to him, the offence contravene Section 4(1) of the Secret Cult (Abolition and Prohibition) Laws of Ekiti State 2006.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty while their counsel, Mr Timilehin Omotoso prayed the court to grant bail to his clients, with a promise that they would not jump bail.

    Chief Magistrate Aderopo Adegboye consequently granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N200, 000 and two sureties in like sum.

    He adjourned the case to October 27 for further hearing.

    …Witness recants evidence in statement on oath

     

    There was drama at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court on Monday, when a witness, Francis Ajayi Olowoyeye, recanted his deposition on his statement on oath while under cross-examination.

    He came to testify in support of a 57-year-old Sunday Adetolaju, who was charged to court by the Police for illegally installing himself as “Obaru Adimula” of Irorin Quarters in Ilawe.

    Adetolaju was also slammed with a charge of illegally parading himself as a king by wearing crown and royal regalia and also installing chiefs without being a prescribed authority and without the consent and permission of the prescribed authority, the Alawe of Ilawe, Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabi.

    Also charged alongside Adetolaju are four persons he illegally installed as chiefs: Rufus Ayo Olaniyi (52), Lucas Adubu (50), Rufus Asubiaro (58) and Florence Ojuko (50).

    The accused persons, according to the charge sheet, committed offences contrary to Sections 12 and 15 of the Chiefs Law Cap C5 Vol 1 Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    Prosecution counsel was the Officer in Charge of Legal Department, Ekiti State Police Command, Mr. Femi Falade while the defence counsel is Mr. Taiwo Ogunmoroti.  Chief Olubunmi Olugbade held watching brief for nominal complainant (the Alawe).

    Under cross-examination from Falade, the witness, Olowoyeye when confronted with his sworn affidavit told the court that he resides at Corpus Christi College area, Adin Quarters, Ilawe.

    His latest testimony was contrary to what he told the court on the last day of sitting, August 7 that he resides at Number 2, Ijewi Street, Irorin Quarters, Ilawe.

    Olowoyeye told the court that Alawe was installed in December 2011 but was confronted by the prosecution counsel with documentary evidence which showed that Alawe was appointed in November 2011 while Ororin was appointed December of the same year.

    Contrary to his evidence, Olowoyeye was confronted with a letter signed by all quarter chiefs in Ilawe showing that appointment and installation of chiefs in Ilawe are uniform and guided by Ekiti State Chiefs Law.

    Falade also confronted the witness with earlier approvals by the late Alawe to the immediate past Ororin and other chiefs in Irorin Quarters and other quarters in Ilawe.

    Presiding Chief Magistrate, Mr. Adesoji Adegboye, adjourned the case to 27th October for further hearing.

    Ekiti: Five docked for stealing 600 bags of cement

    The ongoing construction of the new Erekesan Market otherwise known as “Oja Oba” in Ado-Ekiti by the Ayo Fayose administration has been stalled by alleged theft of about 600 bags of cement and other materials by five workers at the site.

    The five workers: Jegede Olusola, Faleye Sunday, Filani Oladipo, Olabode Felix and Dada Tunde were arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on two counts charge of stealing.

    They were all charged to court by Ekiti State government before Chief Magistrate Idowu Ayenimo. The charge was filed against them by Director of Public Prosecution, Mr. Gbemiga Adaramola.

    Apart from stealing 600 bags of cement worth N1.5 million, the accused persons also allegedly stole 16mm iron rods worth N35,000, one roll of binding wire worth N112,000 and 180 pieces of marine board worth N378,000 with all the stolen items valued at N2,055,000.00

    The alleged offence is punishable under Sections 390 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    Work on the new market had stalled for a couple of months which had been attributed to the alleged stealing of construction materials by workers engaged by the contractor who has been in race against time to deliver the project as scheduled.

    The charge sheet reads:  “That you, Jegede Kayode Olusola, Faleye Sunday, Filani Oladipo, Olabode Felix and Dada Tunde between October 6, 2016 to March 31, 2017 did conspire to steal 600 bags of cement worth N1,530,000, 16mm iron rods worth N35,000, one roll of binding wire worth N112,000, 180 pieces of marine board worth N378,000 total value of N2.05m, property of Ekiti State Government at the site of ultramodern Oba’s Market, Old Garage, Ado Ekiti within the Ado Ekiti Magisterial District, thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.”

    At the resumed hearing on Thursday, the prosecutor asked the presiding Chief Magistrate for a short adjournment to enable him respond to the counter-affidavit and Preliminary Objection filed against the charge.

    “We were served this morning, we thought we will be able to respond to the processes but unfortunately we are still typing stage.

    “Consequent upon this, we will be asking for a very short adjournment.”

    The defence counsel, Mr. Obafemi Adewale, did not object to the application.

    In his ruling,  Aiyenimo adjourned the case till August 17 for hearing.

    Court remands seven for shooting Herdsman, Killing four cows

    An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday ordered the remand of seven men in prison custody over alleged suspected terrorism act.‎

    Police prosecutor, Sgt. Bankole Olasunkanmi, told the Court that the suspects committed the offence on May 19 in Igogo Ekiti in Moba Local Government Area of the state.

    The seven accused persons are Bamisaye Kehinde (35), Sunday Oladele (24), Bamisale Olawale (37), Obembe Richard (30), Tunde Agbetoye (39), Afolayan Sunday (30) and Onipede Michael (28) who are all indigenes of Igogo-Ekiti.‎

    Olasunkanmi alleged that, the suspects were suspected to have terrorised the community unlawfully in an attack that disturbed the peace at Igogo-Ekiti.

    He said that they were docked for being suspected to have terrorised Igogo community by unlawfully engaged in an act to unduly compel Government of Ekiti State to perform an act.

    Governor Ayo Fayose ordered the arrest and prosecution of seven men said to have allegedly attacked a herdsmen, simply identified as Ibrahim and killing four of his cows.

    The accused shot the herdsman with a local rifle but he did not die. They succeeded in killing four cows in his herd in a violence that rocked the community.

    The prosecutor said the offence committed was punishable under Section 11 of Kidnap and Terrorism Law, Laws of Ekiti State 2015.‎

    Olasunkanmi subsequently applied for a date of adjournment to enable him duplicate the case file and sent to Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

    The plea of the suspects were not taken, while their counsel, Busuyi Ayorinde, expressed the intention of seeking their bail at the high Court.‎

    The Chief Magistrate, Idowu Ayenimo, ordered that the suspects should be remanded in prison, till the outcome from DPP office.

    He adjourned the case to June 1 for mention.‎
