  • Man, 65 ‘defiles’ daughter, 5

    A 65-YEAR-OLD man, Bayo Akinwete was on Wednesday brought before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate’s Court for allegedly defiling his five-year-old daughter.

    Prosecuting Inspector Monica Ikebuilo said Akinwete gave the girl alcohol to drink before perpetrated the crime.

    Ikebuilo said Akinwete committed the offence on June 18 in Olorunsogo area of Ado-Ekiti.

    The victim, Ikebuilo said, told the police that she and her nine-year-old sister were living with their father; their mother had abandoned them.

    The prosecutor added that the victim said there was a day, her father gave her alcohol to drink, saying when she woke up, she saw her father on top of her.

    Ikebuilo said the victim told her interrogators that it was not the first time her father would sexually assault her, saying “he has been doing the act for some time.”

    She stated that the victim said her father would tell her sister to hold and massage his manhood.

    The prosecutor said the victim reported her father to their neighbour who promptly reported the case to the police.

    The plea of the accused was not taken.

    The prosecutor told the court that the duplicate file had been sent to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

    Magistrate Kehinde Awosika remanded Akinwete in prison custody pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    She adjourned till August 1.

     

  • Two men jailed five years in Ekiti for attempted kidnap

    An Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court has sentenced Lawal Abdullahi (32) and Abubakar Abdullahi (33) to five years imprisonment for threatening to kidnap a resident, identified simply as Alhaji Garba, and demanding N10 million ransom from him.

    The convicts, whose addresses were not provided, faced a three-count charge of conspiracy, threat to cause violence and attempt to kidnap.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Oriyomi Akinwale, told the court that the convicts committed the offence on April 27 at 4 p.m at Ayede-Ekiti.

    Akinwale said the convicts conspired to commit felony to wit: demanding money with threats on Alhaji Garba.

    On count one, the prosecutor averred that the convicts also threatened violence on their victim.

    On count two, he added that they conspired to extort and kidnap the man and demanded N10 million ransom from him.

    Akinwale said the offences contravene sections 516, 86 and 407 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The prosecutor said Lawal Abdullahi married the complainant’s daughter through which he got information about him.

    He said Lawal conspired with Abubakar Abdullahi to demand N10 million ransom from their victim.

    According to him, the convicts threatened that if the man failed to provide the money, they would kidnap and kill him.

    Akinwale said Garba promised to give them N500,000 out of the N10 million they demanded from him.

    The prosecutor said the complainant took the convicts’ number to the police, adding that they were tracked by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Intelligence Response Team in Ekiti State branch to Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State.

    He said the convicts were apprehended at Ijebu-Ode and taken to Ekiti State where the offence was committed.

    The convicts pleaded guilty.

    The prosecutor urged the court to place the maximum punishment on the convicts due to the prevalent wave of kidnapping in the country.

    The Magistrate, Mr Timothy Abe, sentenced each of the convicts on first count to five years imprisonment; to one year on the second count and to five years on the third count.

    Abe sentenced the convicts to five years imprisonment to run concurrently without an option of fine.

     

  • Police arraign two for allegedly stealing bags of biscuits

    An Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court on Thursday arraigned two persons for allegedly stealing bags of biscuits valued at N108,000.

    Olayiwola Segun, 27 (M) and Musa Rasidat, 22 (F), were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye.

    The defendants, whose addresses were unknown, are facing a charge of stealing.

    The police prosecutor Inspector Johnson Okunade told the court that the defendants and two others on the run committed the offence between June 4 and 6 at 1500 hrs (3pm) at Ronak Biscuits factory at Oke-Ureje in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

    The prosecutor alleged that the defendants, a sales representative in the factory, stole 140 bags of biscuits valued at N108, 000 property of Mrs Akin Ronke.

    He said the offence contravened Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    Apata asked the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

    Both defendants pleaded not guilty to charges against them.

    The defence counsel Mr Timi Omotosho urged the court to grant the defendants bail, promising that they would not jump bail.

    The Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye granted the defendants bail for N100, 000 with one surety each in like sum.

    He adjourned the matter till July 12 for hearing.

  • Man arraigned for alleged assault

    A 25-year-old man, Agboola David, has been arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for alleged assault.

    The defendants were arraigned by the police on a count charge of assault before Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye.

    The police prosecutor, Insp. Johnson Okunade, told the Court that the defendant committed the offence on Feb. 20 at about 3:00pm in Isinbode Ekiti.

    Okunade alleged that the defendant fought with one Adeniran Adesola, by macheting him on the head which caused grevious harm on him.

    He said the offence committed contravened section 335 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The prosecutor asked the Court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and gather his witnesses.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    The Counsel to the defendant, Mr Kayode Oluwasola, urged the Court to grant him bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.

    The Magistrate, Adegboye granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.

    He adjourned the case until April 29.

     

  • Ekiti woman, three others arraigned for phone theft, robbery

    A 49-year-old woman, Bolanle Adekanmi, has appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a cell phone valued at N55,000.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Caleb Leranmo, told the court that the accused and others at large committed the offence on April 17, 2018, at Enu-Odi market, Odo-Ado in Ado-Ekiti. He alleged that the accused stole one Infinix Note 3 phone valued at N55,000 and the sum of N50,000 belonging to one Chinedu Nwonu. He said that the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Law of Ekiti State, 2012. The prosecutor asked for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

    The accused pleaded not guilty, and her counsel, Mr Yemi Adebayo, urged the court to grant the accused bail, promising that she would not jump bail.

    In her ruling, the presiding magistrate, Mrs. Taiwo Ajibade, granted the accused bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum. She adjourned the case till September 27 for hearing.

    In another development, three men, Aseki Isaac, Oluwafemi Shina and Usuga Segun, also appeared before the same court for armed robbery.

    According to the prosecutor, the trio conspired to commit felony   we and armed robbery in Ayede Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area on August 8.

    The offence, according to him, contravened Section 516 of Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    Leranmo applied for a date to enable him study the case file. Counsel to the accused persons, Mr. Busuyi Ayorinde, made an oral application for their bail describing their offence as bailable.

    Ayorinde argued that Section 115(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law Ekiti State 2012 allows his clients bail since the offence was not punishable by death.

    He added that Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution presumes them to be innocent in the eyes of the law until proven otherwise. Ayorinde promised that his clients will not jump bail if granted by the court saying they didn’t have any previous criminal record.

    Magistrate Ajibade granted each of the accused persons bail N20,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She held that the sureties must be resident within the Ado-Ekiti magisterial district and must deposit their permanent voter cards (PVCs). The case was adjourned till September 4 for further hearing.

     

  • Man arraigned for ‘stealing’ lotto cash

    The police on Thursday arraigned a 25-year-old man, Fasina Toyin, before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for alleged theft.

    The defendant of no fixed address is standing trial on a count charge of theft.

    The prosecutor, Insp Caleb Leranmo, told the Court that the defendant committed the ‎offence on August 20 at about 1100hrs at Winners Golden Chance Lotto located at No 36 Olusola Adebayo Street, GRA in Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the accused stole N117, 000 belonging to one Mr.  Falore Olamiposi.

    He said that the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Law of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The prosecutor asked the Court for adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    His counsel, Mr. Adefolaju Ayobioloja, urged the Court to grant him bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. Taiwo Ajibade, granted bail to the defendant in the sum N20, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Ajibade adjourned the case until September 20 for hearing.

  • Man remanded for murder, secretly burying Okada rider

    An Ado-Ekiti Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of a farmer, Toyin Ajakaye, for alleged murder and ‘secret burial’ of a commercial motorcyclist, Omoniyi Are.

    Toyin was arraigned on information from the Commissioner of Police to the court that there was a probable cause to remand the suspect in prison custody for being reasonably suspected to have committed murder.

    According to the charge sheet marked MAD/133ft/2018, Toyin was alleged to have committed the crime on 22nd August at Agbado-Ekiti in Gbonyin Local Government Area.

    Toyin told the court that he engaged the commercial cyclist to convey him to the farm where a fight allegedly ensued between them over disagreement on the transport fare.

    The fight, according to him, was sparked by his offer to pay the deceased N100 out of the N200 charged by the cyclist. The defendant claimed that he had N100 on him.

    Toyin claimed that he held the deceased by the neck as he (Omoniyi) was trying to grab his genitals adding that the deceased died in the scuffle.

    The defendant confessed that when he couldn’t carry the corpse, he dug a shallow grave and tied a rope on the neck of the deceased and buried same in the grave.

    Toyin said he was arrested by passersby who handed him over to the police.

    But the report of the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), Lasisi Bashiru, countered the statement of the defendant.

    According to the IPO, investigation revealed that the defendant tied the rope on the neck of the deceased at the scene of the crime and buried the corpse adding that Toyin had earlier been detained of a case of stealing goats.

    The police prosecutor, Oriyomi Akinwale, pleaded that the court granted the request to remand the defendant in prison custody.

    Defence counsel, Busuyi Ayorinde, pleaded that the duplicate case file be forwarded to the Ministry of Justice for legal advice adding that application for bail will be filed before an appropriate court.

    Presiding magistrate, Mrs. Modupe Afeniforo, ordered that Toyin be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case till 16th October.

  • Police arraign teenager over alleged burglary, stealing

    Nineteen-year-old ‎Adenugba Olamilekan, on Thursday appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate’s Court over alleged burglary and stealing.

    The accused, whose address is No 34 Sabo area, Ado-Ekiti, is facing two -count charge of burglary and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Insp Caleb Leranmo, told the court that the accused committed the offence on August 18, behind Nova School, GRA in Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the defendant broke into the apartment of one Mr Akhindenor Francis and Mr Babatunde Gbemileke, both lived at the same area.

    Leranmo also alleged that the accused stole five litres of groundnut oil valued at N2,600, five litres of palm oil valued at N2,500, rice valued at N7, 350 and cash sum of N3,000 belonging to Mr Akhindenor Francis.

    The prosecutor alleged that the accused also stole clothes valued at N25, 000, foodstuffs valued at N6,000, and cash sum of N14,000 belonging to Mr Babatunde Gbemileke.

    According to him, the offences contravened Section 411 (1) (2) and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor urged the Court to adjourn the case to enable him study the file and assemble his witnesses.

    The accused pleaded not guilty, and his counsel, Mr Olatunde Olayemi, urged the Court to grant his client bail and promised that the accused would not jump bail.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Ajibade, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50, 000, with two sureties in like sum.

    Ajibade adjourned the case until August 28 for hearing.

  • Man arraigned over N1 million visa ‘fraud’

    A 58-year-old man, Adesokan Olusola, has appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court over alleged fraud.

    The defendant, whose address was not provided, is being tried for alleged visa fraud.

    The prosecutor, Insp Caleb Leranmo, told the Court that ‎the defendant committed the offence on April 14 in Ado-Ekiti.

    He said the defendant ‎obtained N1 million from the complainant, Mr Ganiyu Ibrahim, on pretext of procuring him travelling visa to travel abroad.

    According to him, the offence contravened Section 419 of Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor asked the Court for adjournment to enable him ‎to study the case file and present his witnesses.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty. His lawyer, Mr Simeon Ojo, urged the Court to grant him bail, promising that he would not jump bail.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Ajibade, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N100,000, with two sureties in like sum.

    Ajibade adjourned the case until September 6 for hearing.

  • Man docked for ‘defrauding’ woman of N1.3 million

    A 50-year-old man, Ishola Abdulkabiru, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court over alleged fraud of N1.3 million.

    The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) legal officer, Mr Femi Ojo, told the Court that the accused committed the offence between 2014 and April 2015 at Oke-Ila street in Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the defendant obtained the sum of N1, 328,000 at various time under false pretence with intent to defraud one Mrs Oluwayemi Ojopekun.

    He said the offence contravened Section 419 of Criminal Code, Cap 38, LFN 2004.

    The prosecutor asked the Court for adjourn meant to enable him study the file and assemble his witnesses.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    His counsel, Mr Famuagun Tijani, urged the Court to grant him bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Modupe Afeniforo, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum, one of the sureties must present a document of landed property.

    Afeniforo adjourned the case until September 25 for hearing.
