  • ‘Advance the cause of Niger Delta’

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Prof. Cladius Daramola to see his appointment as the Minister of State for Niger Delta Development as an opportunity to advance the cause of the oil-rich region.

Prof. Daramola is a chieftain of the APC and indigenous of Ode-Aye in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.

A statement signed by the Director of Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro said it was unarguable that the Niger Delta region is experiencing serious depravity in recent times, adding that a holistic overhaul is needed at the moment to take the region to an enviable height.

APC noted that the appointment of Mr. Daramola, a Professor of repute and a workaholic with eyes for details and thoroughness is therefore a commendable move.

It said: “The appointment of Prof. Daramola, who is indigenous to Ondo State, clearly shows that President Mohammudu Buhari recognises the important role Ondo State plays as the only oil-producing state from the South-western part of the country.”

While thanking President Buhari for the confidence he reposed in Prof. Daramola, the statement said: “We are assuring the President and the minister that the leadership and membership of the party in the state will support him and be available to render a helping hand at all times.

  • Kogi pays LG workers 50 per cent salary advance

Workers in some local government areas of Kogi State during the week got not only their full July salary, but also 50 percent arrears for August.

The state government in a circular directed full payment of workers’ salary in the 21 local government areas.

Workers in Lokoja LG for example got additional 50 percent salary arrears for August, which the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Abubakar Sadiq Ainoko attributed to “money available to it”.

The commissioner said in the month of July, the Federation Account Allocation Committee released a supplementary allocation tagged non-oil revenue, to the state.

Addressing a press conference in Lokoja yesterday, he said the money received from the non-oil revenue allocation made it possible for the council workers to receive their complete salaries.

“I am happy to inform you that with the allocation, all LGs paid 100 percent of salary in the month of July, while Lokoja LGA went a step further to pay another month arrears of 50 percent”, he said.

He commended authorities of all the LGAs for complying with the guidelines given to them on payment of salaries.

He called for understanding from the workers, saying over 80 percent of allocation to LGs is expended on salaries.

“If the allocation to LG is N500 million today, over 80 percent of it will go to workers’ salary. It is what comes from the federal government that is used by the LGs to service salaries, and there is no way the state will not pay workers”, he said.

The chairman of the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Tom Abutu commended the state government for attending to the issue of arrears workers’ salary, saying has acted well.

Wolves advance to Confed Cup play-off

Warri Wolves qualified for the play-off stage of the CAF Confederation Cup with a 3-1 aggregate victory after holding FC MK Étanchéité to a 1-0 win in Kinshasa in the second leg fixture on Friday.

The Seasiders went into the game at the 80000 seater Stade des Martyrs with the hopes of qualifying into the next stage of the competition after winning the first leg 2-1 in Warri two weeks ago.

This comes as big relief to Warri Wolves who have been inconsistent on the domestic front.

The Seasiders are eager to write their name in the history books as they are the only Nigerian side remaining in the competition.

Coach Paul Aigbogun will be pleased if he can win a major trophy for the Seasiders this year.

The hosts dominated the opening 45 minutes of the game by creating all the decent chances, but they failed to hit the back of the net.

Goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi denied the homers on several occasions.

After recess, FC MK Étanchéité put the Seasiders under intense pressure searching for the opener, but the resolute defense marshaled by captain Azubuike Egwuekwe kept the scoreline barren.

Late in the game, Wolves took the game to the hosts and had the most glorious chance in the game, and Oghenekaro Etebo scored as the game ended 1-0.

Wolves have reached the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup competition after their 3-1 aggregate win.

Warri Wolves Starters: Daniel Akpeyi, Goodluck Onamado, Azubuike Egwuekwe, Oke Ogagatevwho, Ojo Mine, Lordson Ichull, Ikechukwu Ibenegbu, Michael Egbeta, Stanley Dimgba, Oghenekaro Etebo, Gbolahan Salami.

  • Bubagha: Bayelsa will advance

    Bubagha: Bayelsa will advance

Bayelsa United coach Richard Bubagha is confident his side will upturn their two-goal deficit to advance to the next round of the CAF Confederations Cup.

The Restoration Boys lost 2-0 to Sewe Sport of Ivory Coast in the first-leg playoff encounter played last weekend. But Bayelsa welcome the Ivoriens to the Sapele Township Stadium this weekend for the return leg which Bubagha is confident his side can reverse their fortunes.

“We will approach the match with a good attitude. I still hope to qualify in the return leg. I know that we will see a much better team in Nigeria,” Bubagha said.

Bayelsa United are Nigeria’s only surviving representatives on the continent this season, after Kano Pillars, Enyimba and Warri Wolves fell along the way. The club will need to win by three un-replied goals to qualify for the group stage.
