AFCON 2025: Nigerians react after Ghana referee appointed for Nigeria, Morocco semi-final clash

The appointment of Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea to officiate the AFCON 2025 semi-final between Nigeria and host Morocco has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians on social media.

CAF, on Tuesday, announced the officiating team for the Nigeria vs Morocco semi-final match, scheduled for January 14, 2026, at the Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium in Rabat.

Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea will lead the team, assisted by Zakhele Thusi Granville Siwela (South Africa), Souru Phatsoane (Lesotho), and Arsenio Chadreque Maringule (Mozambique) as Assistant Referees 1, 2, and 3, respectively.

Samuel Uwikunda (Rwanda) serves as Fourth Official.

While some consider it a fair choice, others question the optics given past controversies.

Some Nigerians expressed skepticism on social media, with @MPKwarteng_ saying, “He’s a good choice, looking at his officiating of the last AFCON final, even though I personally do not like it for the optics. He should just offer himself up for the good of the game and the aftermath of it, which promises to be the memory of his officiating prowess.”

Others expressed concerns over CAF’s intentions, like @xKingMikasa, who tweeted, “Nigeria’s closest rivals are Ghana and South Africa. CAF definitely knows what they’re doing.”

However, not all reactions were negative. @ayoBDB joked about regional rivalries, saying, “No way Morocco thinks our internet beef with Ghana is real? They don’t know we’re actually siblings who are just playing on the internet.”

AFCON 2025: Iwobi hails players’ unity as Super Eagles eye final

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has hailed Coach Eric Chelle for fostering a strong team spirit among the Super Eagles, which has propelled them to the AFCON semi-finals.

Iwobi, at a packed press conference in the Moroccan capital, highlighted the sense of brotherhood and family environment as key factors in their success.

The 29-year-old Fulham star stated that the team’s current prime, combined with the unity and chemistry among players, is driving their impressive performance.

“I feel like the difference is the sense of brotherhood, the family environment that we have created for each other.

“Of course, at previous AFCONs, we have done really well. The team was so strong, but at the same time, we were young, and we were learning about each other.

“I feel like right now everybody is entering their prime, everyone is doing well for their clubs, and you can see the joy and the chemistry we have when playing for our country.

“It is not just on the pitch, but also off the pitch, there is a big unity, we are a big family.”

Iwobi praised Chelle for creating this positive atmosphere, saying, “It starts from the coach; he has brought that brotherhood.”

The Super Eagles are set to face Morocco in the semi-finals, aiming to build on their prolific form and reach the final.

AFCON 2025: Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea to officiate Nigeria–Morocco semi-final clash

Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Laryea has been assigned to officiate the anticipated Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 semi-final clash between Nigeria and host nation Morocco.

The match is scheduled for Wednesday night at the Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium in Rabat.

The appointment is proof of Laryea’s experience and consistency at the highest level of African football.

With a reputation for composure and sharp decision-making, Laryea has been one of the standout referees at the ongoing tournament.

He recently served as Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during Morocco’s tense quarter-final victory over Cameroon and took charge as centre referee in the group-stage encounter between Algeria and Burkina Faso.

The semi-final match promises to be fiercely contested, with Morocco seeking to capitalise on home advantage and Nigeria aiming to assert their pedigree to secure a spot in the final.

AFCON 2025: African coaches guaranteed to lift trophy again

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has once again underlined the growing dominance of African coaches, with the semi-final lineup guaranteeing that, for the fourth consecutive edition, an African tactician will lead his team to continental glory.

This remarkable trend follows Djamel Belmadi’s triumph with Algeria in 2019, Aliou Cissé’s historic title with Senegal in 2021, and Émerse Faé’s success with Côte d’Ivoire in 2023. AFCON 2025 now promises to extend that proud legacy.

The last four teams are all guided by African managers: Walid Regragui with hosts Morocco, Hossam Hassan of Egypt, Pape Thiaw of Senegal, and Eric Chelle, the Malian tactician leading Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

It marks the first time in AFCON history that all semi-finalists are coached by Africans. Statistics from the tournament further highlight the impact of local expertise.

Out of the 24 teams that participated at AFCON 2025, 15 were led by African coaches. Eleven of those progressed beyond the group stage, while African-led teams have accounted for an impressive 75 percent of all victories recorded so far.

Beyond collective success, individual legacies are also at stake. Only two African legends — Mahmoud El-Gohary and Nigeria’s Stephen Keshi — have achieved the rare feat of winning the AFCON both as players and as coaches.

Egypt legend Hossam Hassan now stands on the brink of joining that exclusive club if he can guide the Pharaohs to glory in 2025. However, his path is far from straightforward, with a daunting semi-final clash against Senegal scheduled for Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

Later the same day, Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face tournament hosts Morocco in Rabat, as African coaches continue to shape the narrative and destiny of the continent’s biggest football competition.

AFCON 2025: Morocco beat Cameroon 2-0 to book semi-final spot

Hosts Morocco booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a composed 2–0 victory over Cameroon in Friday’s quarter-final encounter, keeping alive their dream of lifting a first continental title in 50 years.

Brahim Diaz once again proved decisive, scoring for the fifth consecutive match at the tournament to put the Atlas Lions ahead. Ismael Saibari added the second as Morocco delivered another efficient, if unspectacular, performance, converting two of their three shots on target.

While Morocco controlled large spells of the contest, clear-cut chances were few and far between.

Cameroon had a strong appeal for a penalty waved away in the second half following what appeared to be a foul on Bryan Mbeumo. However, the Indomitable Lions struggled in the final third and failed to register a single save from Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou over the 90 minutes.

The Atlas Lions will now turn their attention to the semi-finals, where they are set to face the winner of Saturday’s quarter-final clash between Algeria and Nigeria. The last-four tie will be played in Rabat on Wednesday.

  • AFCON 2025: Mali’s mental approach key to upsetting Senegal

AFCON 2025: Mali’s mental approach key to upsetting Senegal

Mali overcame heavy odds and had to dig deep to reach the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals and will need the same mental strength against heavily fancied Senegal today.

Mali were down to 10 men after defender Woyo Coulibaly was sent off in the 26th  minute of last Saturday’s round-of-16 tie against Tunisia in Casablanca but held out to force a 1-1 draw after extra time and advance on penalties.

“Against Tunisia we needed to show strong mentality as it was 10 against 11,” said Serie A-based midfielder Lassana Coulibaly at the pre-match press conference. “We will need the same mentality against Senegal. We want to progress and we feel we have nothing to lose. We are not the favourites but with our mental, physical strength we feel we can win.”

Senegal are the second-ranked team in Africa and, with 10 goals scored in the tournament, they look strong candidates to advance into next week’s semi-finals.

“The eight teams who have qualified for the quarters are all the big footballing countries in Africa but I think we are playing the best,” added Mali coach Tom Saintfiet.

“The only team they’ve lost to over the last years was Brazil, they even beat England. It’s a stable team but also very strong who score easily, who don’t give up much and are very dangerous.

“But we are also a good team. We haven’t lost at this tournament, and we played well against Morocco and Tunisia, two countries who qualified for the World Cup,” the Belgian-born coach said.

Mali are, however, also through to the last eight without winning a game. They drew their three group games and then needed penalties against Tunisia in the first knockout round.

“We haven’t created a lot of goal-scoring opportunities, but we’ve played with discipline and we won’t be changing much around our approach. We’ve got players with good ability and a very good mentality,” Saintfiet said.

Mali are the only country in the last eight without previous Cup of Nations success. They were runners-up in 1972 and have been semi-finalists five times since.

Why Super Eagles’ bonus was delayed at AFCON 2025 – NSC chairman

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has attributed the delay in the payment of bonuses to the Super Eagles at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations to bureaucratic bottlenecks.

Dikko spoke on Thursday after reports emerged that players of the Nigeria threatened to boycott their AFCON quarter-final clash against Algeria over unpaid bonuses.

According to the NSC chairman, the funds have already been approved and released, but are still undergoing due process.

“The money has been released and is being processed,” Dikko said during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.

He added: “The NFF, the Sports Commission, the Presidency, the Minister of Finance, and the CBN are all involved. Fundamentally, the money for this AFCON is approved and being processed through the right channels. It’s a matter of timing.”

He stressed that approval of funds does not automatically translate into immediate disbursement, explaining that multiple government institutions are involved in the process.

“Let me give you the timelines of how these issues work. First and foremost, I must tell you that Mr President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, duly approved the special budget for the AFCON as far back as November 14, 2025,” Dikko said.

“But approving the money is different from getting the money out. It takes time for the funds to be processed through the Ministry of Finance, the Office of the Accountant-General, and the Central Bank of Nigeria.”
