Botswana, Mozambique, Tanzania claim final AFCON 2025 tickets

Botswana, Mozambique and Tanzania claimed the final berths in next year’s African Cup of Nations finals as the qualifying competition played to an exciting conclusion on Tuesday.

Botswana pulled off an unlikely draw away against Egypt to make sure of the point they needed to qualify for the second time while Tanzania edged Guinea 1-0 at home in Dar-es-Salaam.

Mozambique needed to avoid defeat away in their Lusophone derby against Guinea Bissau to go through but secured a surprise 2-1 win to qualify for a second successive tournament.

A home loss to Mali last week put Mozambique’s hopes in peril and offered Guinea Bissau a chance to leapfrog them in the Group I standings with a home win.

But Bruno Langa scored after nine minutes to make matters more difficult for Guinea Bissau and although the hosts equalised through Everton’s Beto before halftime, Mozambique restored their advantage in the 52nd minute through Stanley Ratifo.

They then held on for a place in the finals in Morocco in December next year.

Botswana needed a point away in Cairo but were not given much chance in their last Group C fixture. However, Omaatla Kebatho put them ahead after only eight minutes as he capitalised on poor defending.

Egypt, who rested Mohamed Salah for this international window, were level seven minutes later through Mahmoud Trezeguet, leaving Botswana with an uphill task to hold onto their point.

Egypt had 82% of the possession and 29 attempts thereafter but could not force the victory.

Mauritania would have qualified had Egypt won after they beat the Cape Verde Islands 1-0 at home but finished a point behind Botswana.

Tanzania’s meeting with Guinea was a straight shootout for second place in Group H with the hosts needing a win and Guinea a draw.

Tanzanian veteran Simon Msuva got the game’s only goal in the 61st minute to put his country into the finals for a fourth time.

The rest of the 13 qualifying matches played on Tuesday had no bearing on places, with 21 of the 24 finalists already decided.

The 21-year-old Dorgeles Nene scored a hat-trick as Mali romped to a 6-0 win over Eswatini in Bamako while Simon Adingra celebrated being named one of the five nominees for this year’s African Footballer of the Year award with a goal for holders Cote d’Ivoire  as they beat Chad 4-0 in Abidjan.

But they still finished second in Group G to Zambia, who won 2-0 away against Sierra Leone.

Habib Diarra scored two goals as Senegal beat Burundi 2-0 in Dakar to finish Group L unbeaten, dropping only two points in the campaign.

There was an upset as Ethiopia ended already-qualified Democratic Republic of Congo’s unbeaten run with a 2-1 away win in Kinshasa with Mohammednur Nasir scoring the winner six minutes into stoppage time.

  • After Nigeria, Benin deserve AFCON 2025 ticket, says Rohr

After Nigeria, Benin deserve AFCON 2025 ticket, says Rohr

German coach Gernot Rohr believes The Cheetahs of Benin deserve to pick  the second ticket from Group D of the 2025  Africa Cup of Nations qualification after  the Super Eagles claimed  group’s the first ticket last Thursday.

Hostilities towards qualification  for Morocco 2025  will come to an end today as The Cheetahs  are away to Libya in Tripoli while the Super Eagles host the Wasps of Rwanda  in Uyo.

Rohr, who incidentally guided  Nigeria to the 2019 AFCON after the Super Eagles  missed  the  continental party in Equatorial Guinea 2015 and  Gabon 2017, remains confident  of helping  Benin break their own duck since their last appearance at Egypt  2019 by securing a positive result  against the Mediterranean Knights in Tripoli today.

“Tomorrow (today) is a big game for us and decisive one  because we conceded an equaliser in the  last minute few minutes of the match against Nigeria in Abidjan,” Rohr told NationSports from Tripoli yesterday. “We could  have mathematically qualified last time (Thursday) if we’d  won (against Nigeria ).”

Going into the last round of matches today, Rohr admitted that Benin must do everything to avoid defeat in Tripoli since The Cheetahs are on seven points while Rwanda  are on five points, adding a shock  win  for the Wasps in Uyo could upset  his side’s applecart.

“ Two of the three possible results in a football match will be good for us (to qualify for AFCON 2025) as such, we must avoid defeat in the match against Libya,” the vastly experienced former Bayern Munich  and Bordeaux defender further said.

He added: “At least if we can get a draw, we would qualify even if  Rwanda is winning in Uyo against  Nigeria which I don’t believe it is possible and even If we draw against Libya  and Rwanda  win Uyo, we would still qualify because we have a general better goal difference.

“That’s the situation  but we have to keep eyes only on our own game because I’m confident the Super Eagles playing at home, cannot allow defeat by Rwanda.”

Away from mathematical permutations, Rohr said his optimism  going into today’s round of matches  was borne out of the fact  that The Cheetahs  are  the most improved  team  in the group  besides the ‘illustrious’  Super Eagles who are through already to Morocco 2025.

“Of course, I agree that until the very last moments, it will be a big suspense but based on the last five rounds of matches we have  played in the group and after seeing  one another, I think we(Benin) are just behind the Super Eagles as such, we deserve the second  ticket in order  to qualify for the AFCON 2025,” he concluded.

  • AFCON 2025: No mercy for The Cheetahs of  Benin , says Ekong

AFCON 2025: No mercy for The Cheetahs of  Benin , says Ekong

Osimhen, Simon  and 20 others  trained 2 in Abidjan

Super Eagles defender  William Ekong  has  vowed that no quarter  would be given  and none would be asked  when  the Super Eagles take on  The Cheetahs of Benin  in tomorrow’s  Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)  Group D’s Matchday Five  encounter  in Abidjan.

The 31-year-old  was in the mix  yesterday along with 21 others  as the  coach Austin Eguavoen-led side began  preparations  for the  encounter  with the Beninese side

The team had  their  first training session at their  much-familiar environment of Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny ahead of tomorrow’s  potentially-explosive encounter against The Cheetahs  being managed by former Super Eagles trainer, German coach Gernot Rohr.

With 10 points from four matches, seven goals for and none against, and top of their Group D, the Eagles will walk with an extra bounce into the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny, the facility where they upended the aspirations of Guinea Bissau, Cameroon and Angola at the 34th  Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cote d’Ivoire earlier in the year.

It was also the venue where in the summer, they were slated by two goals to one by the Cheetahs (who have been forced by lack of a CAF-approved facility in their country to adopt Abidjan as home) in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying game in which they scored first.

“The stadium is a familiar one for us and we have good memories from the AFCON. We will rather focus on the positive results we have taken away from here and work hard for another good day in the office on Thursday,” Ekong told the Nff.com. “It is not going to be easy because the Beninoise are also chasing a ticket to the final tournament. However, our objective is clear: three points on the night.”

Before the team’s first training, coach Eguavoen  was upbeat  with only Spain-based forward Sadiq Umar was being expected.

“We have 22 players, with only one person to join the team in the early hours of Wednesday. It has been a particularly great atmosphere here in Abidjan, and we are all very positive going into the first training session ahead of the match,” Coach Augustine Eguavoen told thenff.com .

Eleven players including  Vice-Captain and AFCON Man of the Competition  Ekong, reigning Africa Player of the Year Victor Osimhen, his likely successor Ademola Lookman, defenders Bright Osayi-Samuel, Olaoluwa Aina, Victor Collins and Calvin Bassey, midfielders Alex Iwobi and Alhassan Yusuf Abdullahi, and Germany-based forward Victor Boniface all arrived at once yesterday, before being joined by South Africa-based goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Earlier, goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, midfielder Wilfred Ndidi and forward Kelechi Iheanacho had arrived, to join the eight that were in camp on Monday: goalkeeper Amas Obasogie, defenders Gabriel Osho and Bruno Onyemaechi, midfielders Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Frank Onyeka and Raphael Onyedika, and forwards Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze.

Meanwhile,   Senegalese official Issa Sy, who was in charge when the Super Eagles pipped Angola 1-0 at the same venue, in a quarter-final match of the Africa Cup of Nations finals, has been selected by CAF as referee for Thursday’s encounter, which will commence at 7pm CIV time (8pm Nigeria time).

He will be supported by compatriots Djibril Camara (assistant 1), Nouha Bangoura (assistant 2) and El Hadji Amadou Sy (fourth official). Ivorian Rene Williams Sere will be the commissioner while Angolan Inacio Manuel Candido will be the referee assessor.

The Super Eagles need only one point from  tomorrow’s clash to be sure of a ticket to the 35th AFCON, scheduled for Morocco 21st  December 2025 – 18th  January 2026.

AFCON 2025: Sudan seek big win over Ghana on Tuesday

After recording a 0-0 draw in matchday three of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers earlier this week, Sudan and Ghana have promised to go toe-to-toe in their upcoming Group F assignment at the Martyrs of February Stadium tomorrow . Kick-off is at 3:00pm CAT.

Ghana and Sudan played to a 0-0 stalemate in their most recent AFCON qualifier, which took place at the Accra Sports Stadium this past Thursday.

Following what was a largely frustrating tie for the Black Stars, given their dominance throughout the encounter, Ghana go into their next tie sitting in 3rd  position in Group F after three matches played.

Sudan on the other hand, occupy 2nd  spot in Group F, five points behind log leaders Angola. While Ghana played the previous tie on home soil, the return leg has been scheduled to commence at a neutral venue amid security concerns in Sudan.

Sudan head coach James Kwasi Appiah has tipped his side to win big  tomorrow after expressing his content at recording a draw in Accra.

“It was a difficult game but we managed to fight to get a draw,” Appiah said. “We are now going to play the return leg in Benghazi. It’s not going to be easy but Insha-Allah we are going to fight and make sure we get a big victory for Sudan.

On the back of firing blanks on Thursday, Ghana mentor Otto Addo believes his side will put the ball into the back of the net on Tuesday afternoon.

“I think they’ve shown on every level they can score all of them and I believe in them; they will score in the next game,” Addo said.

Both sides are expected to name a full-strength squad for the upcoming tie after facing no real injury concerns in Ghana.

Other than the most recent stalemate, Ghana has the upper hand over Sudan in the head-to-head count after bagging three wins in the last five matches played across the board.

Sudan last tasted victory against Ghana in 2020, when they recorded a 1-0 win over the Black Stars in a AFCON qualifier at the Al-Hilal Stadium.
