Black Stars keeper fined over facebook rant

The Ghana FA have hit goalkeeper Razak Brimah with a US$2500 fine in response to his foul-mouthed rant on Facebook.

The shot-stopper took to social media to post a curse-ridden video in which he hit back at the critics of his performances at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

In response, the GFA issued a statement condemning his conduct and revealed that the player will lose half of his win bonus (the money will be donated to charity upon Ghana’s return from the AFCON) and write a formal apology.

According to the statement, the punishment is due to a breach of the code of conduct of the Black Stars, which states in Article 6(1)& (2):

1 – During the periods of camping all members of the Delegation, particularly players are forbidden to engage in any discussions, and/or any form of communication with player agents, scouts, journalists and all other unauthorized personnel except with the express permission of the Head Coach or Leader of Delegation.

2 – Any player who violates Clause 1 of this article shall be subject to a fine of not less than $1,000.00 In pursuance thereof, the GFA has decided to impose a fine of $2,500 on Brimah which will be donated to a charity in Ghana.

Brimah and Ghana will hope this action puts the issue to bed and allows the player to focus on preparing for Thursday evening’s semifinal against Cameroon.

    Adebayor seals Basaksehir deal

True to predictions in some quarters that Togo Captain Emmanuel Adebayor will land a deal before the end of the ongoing Nations Cup in Gabon, the former Arsenal forward has put pen on paper for Istanbul Basaksehir.

The experienced attacker, 32, had been without a club since leaving Crystal Palace at the end of the 2015-16 campaign, but has now found a new home in the Super Lig. The contract will run until June 2018.

“I had talks with a lot of people from this club and the way they presented the project to me was quite interesting,” Adebayor told beIN Sports.

“I am happy to be part of this beautiful project and to be part of this club.

“I want to do my job, which is to score goals and to help the team in games.”

The striker started his professional career with Metz and also wore the jerseys of Monaco, Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Tottenham before joining Palace.

He failed to make much of an impact at his last club, though, and was released on a free transfer during the close season.

Adebayor featured for Togo at the Africa Cup of Nations this month, with Claude Le Roy’s men crashing out in the group stages.

Basaksehir have been one of the revelations of the Turkish top flight this campaign and sit second in the table with 42 points from 19 games, trailing leaders Besiktas by two points.

    Adebayor rules out retirement

Togo’s veteran centre forward and all-time top goalscorer Emmanuel Adebayor has insisted that he will not be retiring from international anytime soon.

The 2008 African Footballer of the Year was part of the Sparrow Hawks squad that was eliminated from the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals earlier this month.

Adebayor, who has been playing for Togo since 2000, stated that he will only quit international football when the time is right.

“This Togo belongs to me and I belong to them,” Adebayor told the media.

“So I can’t see myself going out now because going out now is like coming out of the boat. And I’m the captain of the boat.

“Even if I have to come out I have to come out at the right time and I don’t think it’s the right time.”

Adebayor, who will turn 33 next month, played at the 2017 AFCON finals as a free-agent and he has confirmed interest from English Premier League clubs.

AFCON: Egypt’s Elneny to miss Burkina Faso clash

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny will not be available for Egypt when they face Burkina Faso in the African Nations Cup semi-final tomorrow, coach Hector Cuper said on Sunday.
“Elneny will not be available against Burkina Faso,” Cuper told a news conference after Egypt claimed a last-gasp 1-0 win over Morocco to book a last-four berth.
“He suffers from a calf injury. We sent a medical report to his club to inform them of his injury.”
Elneny missed the win over Morocco in the quarter-final after playing in the three group-stage games against Mali, Uganda and Ghana.
He was criticised by section of the Egypt fans for what they deemed as some poor displays in the heart of Egypt’s midfield but Cuper leapt to his defence, saying he was key member of the team.

AFCON: Cuper looking to restore Egypt glory

SUNDAY’S Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal between Egypt and Morocco is set to be a classic battle of managerial minds, bringing together a two-time winner of the trophy in Herve Renard and wily Hector Cuper.

While Frenchman Renard has become a fixture on the African scene, and a successful one at that, the 61-year-old Argentine Cuper is sampling a major international tournament for the first time.

Appointed in 2015, Cuper was charged with the daunting task of making the record seven-time African champions a force again.

A first appearance at the World Cup since 1990 is, he has admitted, the “big objective.”

But returning to the Cup of Nations for the first time since they won a third consecutive trophy in 2010 came first.

Cuper did that and he has steered them through to the knockout phase by making the Pharaohs the kind of side that nobody likes playing against.

Egypt did not concede a goal in the group stage in Gabon, following a 0-0 draw with Mali by winning 1-0 against Uganda and Ghana, both times thanks to flashes of inspiration from star man Mohamed Salah.

“Now modern football is always like attacking football, full-backs always high, but he is a bit different, a bit old-school,” Egypt’s Ahmed Elmohamady, of Premier League Hull City, told AFP.

AFCON: Amuneke says Africa not developing its coaches

DR Congo and Senegal will be the only AFCON 2017 quarterfinalists led by a local coaches and Nigerian coach Emmanuel Amuneke said it is because African countries have failed to develop and encourage their own coaches.

The six other quarterfinalists at Gabon 2017 are headed by foreign coaches  Ghana, Egypt, Morocco, Burkina Faso, Tunisia and Cameroon.

Former African footballer of the year Amuneke is presently in Qatar working as a television pundit on the AFCON in Gabon.

He has charged African countries to try and look inwards for coaches to guide their national teams.

“It’s not about who the coaches are, their colour of skin or what. It does not matter where the coach comes from. He won’t take the glory of his team’s success to his native country,” said the former FC Barcelona winger.

“But then, have we made any conscious effort to develop our own coaches?

“Do we repose confidence in our own coaches? Have we tried to support them as should be expected?

“(In Nigeria) We have the National Institute for Sports (NIS), where coaches are supposed to be trained, but what is the present condition of the institute?

“We know of a fact that we have sound, knowledgeable people like Adegboye Onigbinde, Kashimawo Laloko and James Peters.  These are institutions of the game on their own merits, but are we making the best use of them?”

I’m proud of winning AFCON record – Enyeama

Former Nigeria international goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama has said he is immensely proud of his record at the AFCON, where he has won a medal in all editions he played.

Enyeama won AFCON bronze medal thrice, in 2004, 2006 and 2010, before he led Nigeria to win gold in 2013.

The ex-Super Eagles captain also admitted that playing at the AFCON is difficult and different ball game.

“Thanking God. So lucky to have gotten a medal in each of the AFCON tournament that I played in. AFCON no easy,” the highly-rated Lille goalkeeper tweeted.

Nigeria have failed to qualify for the last two AFCONS, in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

Leekens quits after Algeria’s AFCON exit

Algeria’s George Leekens became the first coaching casualty of the African Nations Cup, resigning on Tuesday after his team was eliminated less than three months after taking the job.

“Given the pressure exerted on the federation and the national team, I prefer to stop my contract. For the good of all, I prefer to leave even if I do it with a sore heart while wishing all the success in the world to the national team,” Reuters quoted the Belgian coach as saying in a statement on the Algerian Football Federation website (www.faf.dz).

Algeria failed to win a game in Group A, finishing with a 2-2 draw against Senegal in Franceville on Monday for only a second point from three matches.

The team had been among the pre-tournament favourites but was held in its opening game by outsiders Zimbabwe and lost to neighbours Tunisia.

It was the second spell in charge of the Algerian team for the 67-year-old who has also coached the national sides of Belgium and Tunisia.

He took the job on October 27, days after being fired by Belgian club Lokeren.

Leekens’ availability coincided with Algeria’s search for a coach after axing Milovan Rajevac.

The Serbian had been in the job for 113 days before being fired after Algeria began its World Cup qualifying campaign with a home draw against Cameroon.

AFCON: Ivory Coast must beat Moroccco for quarter final

The defending Champions of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ivory Coast must beat Morocco to secure progress to the last eight when they meet at the ongoing tournament in Gabon later on Tuesday at Oyem.

The Ivorians could be the next major casualty at this year’s tournament unless they can get the better of Morocco and their former coach Herve Renard in their last Group C match.

Failure to do so will see them follow hosts Gabon and pre-tournament favourites Algeria out of the door.

Ivory Coast were in a similar position two years ago when they also drew their opening two games but then went on a winning run that took them to the title.

“Don’t worry we’ll do it again,’’ promised fullback Serge Aurier after their last draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday.

DR Congo are top on four points and are expected to see off Togo, on one point, in Port-Gentil to go through as group winners.

Morocco, in second spot, have three points, one more than the Ivorians.

Since departing the Ivory Coast, who he led to the 2015 Nations Cup title, Morocco coach Renard has already had one reunion with his former charges in a World Cup qualifier in Marrakech in November which ended in a 0-0 draw.

On Monday, Senegal, who had already secured top place, rested key players as they drew 2-2 with Algeria in Franceville, while Tunisia, who needed just one point to take second spot, comfortably beat Zimbabwe 4-2 in Libreville.

Aubameyang blames poor preparation for AFCON exit

Gabon captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang blamed the Africa Cup of Nations hosts’ turbulent preparation for their group-stage exit.

A goalless draw with Cameroon put the Panthers out at the first hurdle on Sunday, after they had played out 1-1 ties with Guinea-Bissau and Burkina Faso.

Aubameyang scored each of his country’s goals in the tournament but a costly miss from point-blank range could come back to haunt the Borussia Dortmund man.

Jose Antonio Camacho was only hired as Gabon’s coach in December after Jorge Costa was fired and the transition under the Spaniard led to the late starting of a pre-tournament training camp.

Aubameyang said: “It is really annoying because we had chances. Sadly there are days when it doesn’t go in, like my first chance from two metres out.

“We are all really disappointed. We didn’t really have the time to prepare. We started a little bit late.

“But I am really proud of all the players, because everyone gave their all.

“I think we were stronger than every other team in the group, but it is about everything, the preparation, the change of coach, it wasn’t easy.”

Aubameyang was furious at the final whistle, walking straight off the pitch without shaking hands with any of Cameroon’s players.

“Of course everyone is disappointed, it is usual in these situations,” said Aubameyang. “The players feel it the most.”
