Green confident of Eagles ahead of AFCON

BARRISTER Christopher Green, the technical committee chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has expressed confidence in the 2013 AFCON outing of the Stephen Keshi-led Super Eagles.

In a chat with NationSporting, Green noted that while it may not be easy, the crop of players under coach Keshi are capable of a good show in South Africa.

“I want to say that we have a credible team. I can say that for sure. All we need is the ability to harness these players and make them blend.

“Unfortunately, FIFA has a limited number of slots for friendly games at which time one has to put a team together and such times are not enough to fully build a team. But I must say we have a fairly good team. Good enough to at least make us proud.

“I have the confidence that we are going to do well. Stephen Keshi is not under any pressure. The pressure that he has is the same that we have. It is the same pressure all Nigerians have because we are all expectant”, Green said.

“We are trying to evolve a pattern of playing for the Nigerian team. It’s our pet project with the U-17 team. If you look at this team, it’s well thought-out and cut-out. They’ve been together from U-13 and now they are U-17 now. We ensured they passed the MRI scan at once and that is to tell you there is future for Nigerian football”, he explained.

Green remains confident that the Stephen Keshi-led Eagles would be a team to beat in AFCON 2013 tournament.

“We are a big nation in terms of football; forget the fact that we did not qualify last time out. We can get bloopers here and there, it happens. But I tell you, we will still remain the team to beat. Everybody during the draw was praying not to get into the same group as the Super Eagles because they know what we bring in terms of our play”.

Meanwhile, the top Nigeria FA official Green has also said he is disappointed by Osaze Odemwingie’s reaction after he was not called up for the AFCON.

Osaze was sensationally left out of a 32-man preliminary squad for next month’s Nations Cup and has gone on social media platform Twitter to vent his frustration, insisting he was not dropped for football reasons.

•Says the best will be in goal in South Africa

SUPER EAGLES’ goalkeeper trainer, Ike Shorunmu has allayed fears on the readiness and fitness levels of the team’s top two goalkeepers, Vincent Enyeama and Austin Ejide who are based in Israel.

The two goal stoppers topped the list of four goalkeepers included in the squad list of 32 released by Eagles gaffer, Stephen Keshi for the Faro, Portugal camping that would commence on December 29th, 2012. The other keepers are Rangers’ new keeper Chigozie Agbim and Heartland’s goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.

“Yes, Enyeama and Ejide are in good shape for the 2013 AFCON and I can assure you that all is well as far as that position is concerned. For now they are injury-free and they have been playing regularly for their respective clubs in Israel”, the former Eagles first choice in goal, popularly called ‘Ike Anobi’ told NationSport in Abuja yesterday.

“Back there in Israel I got good news about the duo and I do follow their performances on websites and television and I have been calling them too to keep the records on the number of matches they played, the way they performed in matches and I kept trailing them in various ways.

“Sincerely speaking, they will have to face our own final screening in Faro, Portugal, but I am confident of their abilities as a goalkeeper to make the final squad for the AFCON proper and to use their wealth of experience to help the team in the competition proper barring unexpected situations and injuries”, Shorunmu told NationSport.

Eagles will miss Martins at AFCON – Babangida

Former Nigeria World Cup star Tijjani Babangida has stated the country will miss the goals and experience of Obafemi Martins at the African Cup of Nations.

Martins, Osaze Odemwingie and Taye Taiwo were the notable names omitted from the Eagles preliminary 32-man squad for a training camp in Portugal ahead of next month’s Nations Cup.

The Atlanta 1996 Olympic gold medallist told MTNFootball.com that even though Stephen Keshi is in charge of the team and has the final say on his team, he still believes the Levante striker should have been considered for the continent’s premier soccer tournament.

“Obafemi Martins should have been included in the team because he has been scoring goals in Spain almost every weekend.

“Though Keshi should be allowed to pick his team, Martins’ experience and goals would have helped the team in South Africa.

“At the 1998 World Cup in France, the late Rashidi Yekini was included in the team because of his wealth of experience if things didn’t go well with Victor (Ikpeba) and the others,” MTNFootball.com quoted the ex-Ajax Amsterdam star as saying in the interview.

Babangida also made a case for the inclusion of Sivasspor of Turkey striker Michael Eneramo on the provisional squad.

“I was equally surprised Eneramo was not considered at all since Keshi took over despite his exploits in Turkey,” he told MTNFootball.com.

AFCON: ‘Shittu to snub Eagles’ invitation’

Danny Shittu is to reject a chance to feature at the African Cup of Nations with Nigeria, according to Millwall boss Kenny Jackett.

Millwall skipper Shittu has been named in the Super Eagles preliminary 32-man squad for next month’s tournament, which will be hosted in South Africa, but Jackett has revealed the centre-back does not intend to take part.

“I don’t think he’s going to go and I don’t think he’s been in touch with them. At the moment that’s the decision.

“It was a surprise, but it shows how well Danny has done. He’s only in the preliminary squad so that’s going to be cut down.

“But congratulations to him because he’s in there based on his performances,”MTNFootball.com quoted Jackett as saying on the issue.

The former QPR defender starred at the 2010 Nations Cup in Angola but has been frozen out by Nigeria since the 2010 World Cup incidentally in South Africa.

He was not highly rated by Samson Siasia and Stephen Keshi has not considered him since he took charge of the Eagles last year November till now.

  • ‘Consumer protection is our collective responsibility’

‘Consumer protection is our collective responsibility’

Mrs. Ify Umenyi sits atop as Director General, Consumer Protection Commission (CPC), an agency saddled with the responsibility of enforcing consumer rights. In this interview with Bukola Afolabi she speaks on the challenges and prospects her job offers

One would have expected that the Consumer Rights Protection (CPC) would be at the borders at least to be able to apprehend some of these unscrupulous businessmen who import substandard products into the country but this is not so. Why?

At Consumer Protection Commission, we have our job caught out for us. The Commission’s mandate is to checkmate the sales and distribution of fake products already in the country and not to stop them from entering the country through the borders. The responsibility of making sure such banned and substandard goods does not find its way into the country lies with the Nigerian Customs Service and Immigration Service, two agencies that are situated at the country’s numerous borders.

At the border, we have the Customs and Immigration. I am not sure if the Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON is there. The issue of border is to prevent goods from coming in because those goods that are coming illegally will be checked. We cannot be at the border because our concern as directed by the government is to prevent their sales when they get into the country. We can only catch people within the country on their way to the market to sell these goods once we have a tip off.

I want to find out what you are doing in the oil and gas sector especially the filling stations because recently, those selling fuel are reported to be demanding for N200 from every buyer before they sell fuel whereas your Commission is expected to protect consumers?

Sometimes it is due to desperation. People do pay such money in the rush to buy fuel. We all know that even owners of these stations are not even aware of such demands from attendants. It is wrong. Well, it is an issue and it is not an issue. It is not an issue in the sense that it is not all the people that are doing illegal thing. If we (CPC) happen to be there and we catch them, we discipline them appropriately. Our consumers also have a responsibility. They should be on the queue whenever they want to buy fuel. Those that pay that money are those who try to leave the line and get in front of others. In other words, they shunt!

No. Even at NNPC stations, people complain that even attendants don’t sell to car owners but they prefer to sell to those with kegs and even demand for gratification from prospective buyers?

I am using this opportunity to charge the Lagos office because I have not heard of this situation before now. They should carry out investigations and go with law enforcement officials because it is the only way they will know what is going on.

The president of Nigeria Liquefied Gas said there are fake gas cylinders in circulation. What danger does this pose?

We are working with SON on that because they have the equipment to check on those gas cylinders. I heard complain about the issue of these cylinders and I know our quality department had some discussions with SON though I cannot tell you precisely what they are doing. When we get such complaints, what we do is to get regulators like SON that has the expertise to carry out investigation.

What are the differences in your duties with that of other regulating bodies like NAFDAC and SON?

They have the responsibility to make sure they have standard for every product. SON set the minimum required standard, you can go above it but you cannot go below. NAFDAC is a sector regulating pharmaceutical products, foods and drinks. They set the rules that guide both the production and sale. CPC works with NAFDAC, SON and other regulators. We contribute to the regulations that are being made. We carry out those regulations. Governments have set the machinery to ensure the protection of products. The standard body conducts investigation. The end result is to ensure the protection of consumers. Government has a programme that covers 774 local governments and it is called Information and Response Centres. It is a centre where consumers could run to and get information on whatever products and services are required and at the same time report whatever they experience in the market.

AFCON: Mikel, Moses, Ameobi join Eagles’ camp January 5

Chelsea stars Mikel Obi and Victor Moses as well as Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi will be the last arrivals at the Nigeria African Cup of Nations camp, MTNFootball.com reports.

The major leagues across Europe will be on Christmas break, but not so with the English Premier League.

Both Chelsea and Newcastle will play their first match in the New Year on January 2.

Chelsea will host a London derby against strugglers Queens Park Rangers, while Newcastle is expected to play at home to Everton.

“The players from the EPL will be the last to arrive in Faro because they are still playing, while other leagues in Europe are on break. So, we hope to get Mikel, Victor Moses and Ameobi in latest January 5.

“All the other players should be in Portugal by January 4, while the boys from the EPL will arrive a day later because that is 14 days before the first match at the Nations Cup, ” a top team official informed MTNFootball.com.

Keshi will name his final 23-man squad on January 9 immediately after the warm-up game against Cape Verde in Portugal.

AFCON: Keshi unveils foreign-based players Christmas Day

Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi, has disclosed that his list of foreign-based players will be made public on Christmas day, MTNFootball.com reports.

However, Keshi on Wednesday in Abuja gave hints on some of the players who will be on the list.

He said Russia-based strikers Ahmed Musa and Emmanuel Emenike as well as Ogenyi Onazi will be in camp in Portugal on December 29.

Keshi also said Ukraine-based striker Brown Ideye will also join up with the rest of the squad on the same day.

He also mentioned Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi and Bright Dike, who is based in the United States, as players who have impressed him to earn a call-up for the Nations Cup.

He said he expects at least 11 of the foreign-based players mainly from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe in Portugal on this day.

However, he confirmed that Inter Milan midfielder Joel Obi will not be involved in the Nations Cup in South Africa on account of a muscle injury.

“Joel Obi is out and we will miss him,” lamented Keshi.

  • Okonkwo wants AFCON call-up

    Okonkwo wants AFCON call-up

Former Heartland defender, Chibuzor Okonkwo wants Super Eagles manager, Stephen Keshi to have a look in on him for the 2013 AFCON game.

Though the door appears closed with Sunday’s resumption of camping by the invited domestic players, the Nigerian defender said he still has a lot to contribute to the side’s campaign at Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

“I’m aware the invited home lads have resumed camping in Abuja for the 2013 AFCON preparations, I still believe I’ve something to offer or contribute to the side’s success at South Africa. Keshi can still accommodate me in his AFCON programme, it’s never late especially as I have what it takes to ease his worry in the defence,” said the former Bayelsa United strongman to supersport.com.

Okonkwo said the Eagles under Keshi stand a good chance of making gold at South Africa 2013.

“The domestic players already in camp are capable of making it to gold in South Africa. Keshi only needs to build the confidence, psych them up and they will stand against the best in Africa. Despite being paired against Cup holders, Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia, the Eagles remain the team to beat at South Africa 2013,” he said.

Okonkwo was a first-team player with the Super Eagles during the stint of Samson Siasia as head coach but has not featured since Keshi took charge in November 2011.

  • ‘Match fixing scandal won’t affect AFCON 2013’

‘Match fixing scandal won’t affect AFCON 2013’

The South Africa Football Association (SAFA) has said the match fixing scandal rocking the association would not affect the preparation and hosting of the 2013 African Nations Cup.

SAFA Acting president, Mwelo Nonkonyana, told newsmen that a commission of enquiry, to be headed by a retired judge, would be set up to investigate the involvement of its officials in the scandal.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that SAFA president Kisten Nematandani and four other top officials were suspended by the emergency committee of the association on Monday.

This was consequent upon the FIFA report implicating SAFA in the match fixing of the Bafana Bafana warm-up matches ahead of the 2010 World Cup. Nonkonyana said the suspension of the top officials does not imply that they were involved in the match scandal.

“This action in no way implies that these individuals were involved in match-fixing. It is simply for good governance that this measure is being implemented,’’ Nonkonyana said.

Apart from Nematandani, SAFA interim CEO Dennis Mumble, head of referees Adeel Carelse, head of national teams Lindile Kika and former head of national teams Barney Kujane, had been placed on a voluntary leave of absence after their names were mentioned in the FIFA report. They are expected to give evidence in the commission of enquiry.

Nonkonyana, who is the current Vice-President of SAFA, would serve as acting president in Nematandani’s absence, while Pinky Lehoko had been appointed interim CEO.

“This is a difficult situation for the association and for those who have been named in the report. We hope that there would be no speculation about their presumed guilt or otherwise. We need to allow the investigation to take place speedily and fairly, so those that are innocent can be separated from those who are not,’’ Nonkonyana said.

He said former CEO Lesley Sedibe and former head of referees Steve Goddard would be asked to give evidence at the enquiry.

SAFA said it had apologised to FIFA after “compelling evidence’’ was found that the results of the World Cup warm-up matches were fixed.

    22 STARS OPEN AFCON TRAINING

•Reuben, Idris fitness boost for Eagles

AFTER OVER three months of layoff from the national team’s camp as a result of injuries, Kano Pillars duo of Gabriel Reuben and Papa Idris, were the cynosure of all eyes as the Super Eagles opened camp for the African Cup of Nations in Abuja, with its first training session.

There were fears that the two players who have been part of the national team from the home front since Stephen Keshi took over about a year ago may not be fit on time for the AFCON 2013 championship, but they came out sparkling in training on Monday morning at the Practice Pitch of the Abuja National Stadium.

Team doctor Ibrahim Gyaran, who later spoke on the state of health of the two players passed them fit for hostilities in the run-up to the championship.

“The only fear I have is that since they have not played competitive football for sometimes they will still experience some mind jitters. But that is only a thing of the mind and the team psychologist, Dr Robinson Okosun and the coaching crew are already working on that aspect,” he declared.

At Monday morning training session, 22 players trained with only Akwa United’s Bassey E, and Fengor Ogude of Velaranga of Norway, who is expected to join the team, were not at the early morning training session. The players were grilled on fitness, tactics and general conditioning for a championship of the magnitude of the Nations Cup.

Head Coach, Stephen Keshi again assured the players that if they prove worthy of a place in the team and better than their European based counterpart they will be picked for the championship.

“It will be my delight if 10 players prove good enough to make the championship roster and I will be happy if at all times four of such players start every game but you have to prove it on the pitch that you are ready for the challenge,” he told the players before training commenced. The team’s training continues today in Abuja.
