Thousands of youths in Ekiti State have urged Governor Biodun Oyebanji to immortalise foremost legal luminary, Chief Afe Babalola, by declaring a public holiday in his honour.

The youth, under the aegis of Ekiti Youth Home Based (EYHB), said the request became necessary in view of Babalola’s heroic deeds and immense contributions to the growth and development of Ekiti State.

This came barely a week after a former Presidential Adviser and Ekiti Central senator in the last political dispensation, Babafemi Ojudu, also canvassed the same position.

Adedayo said that the elder statesman apart from playing prominent roles in the creation of the state in October 1996 had over the years, remained the highest tax payer in the state, and largest employer of labour, after the state government.

According to him, ABUAD Founder had also succeeded in helping government to reduce high rate of unemployment in the state and country, through his many investments.

The statement reads: ” We are proud to note that Afe Babalola has dedicated his entire life to the service of humanity, and has been a trailblazer in promoting education, and empowering the youths in vocations and agriculture through his yearly award of millions of Naira to the best farmers in each of the local governments of Ekiti, and has brought global honour and recognition to Ekiti, Nigeria and humanity.

“Babalola particularly drew the world attention to the name of Ekiti, through the establishment of his world-class Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, (ABUAD), his 400-Bed ABUAD Multi-System Hospital, as well as his 132-Number Industrial Park, all of which are situated in Ekiti, and had employed huge number of job-seeking graduates, and non-graduates alike.

“Besides, Babalola is a leading Nigerian philanthropist, whose benevolent activities to individuals, corporate bodies, associations and institutions, are legendary and unrivaled.”

    • Adebayo, Fayose: we won’t argue with our elder

The founder of Afe Babalola University in Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), has said past Ekiti State governors before the incumbent, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, failed woefully.

Babalola said the past governors performed below expectation because they abandoned the vision and the blueprint designed by those who laboured for the creation of the state.

The legal luminary, who spoke yesterday during the inauguration of the ABUAD multisystem hospital annex at Odo-Ado on Igirigiri Road in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, regretted that Oyebanji did not govern the state much earlier.

He hailed the governor for the giant strides his administration had recorded in all sectors.

Babalola said: “It pains me that you didn’t become governor of Ekiti much earlier than now. We know what we did to bring Ekiti State into existence. Our vision was for Ekiti to be the best state in Nigeria, that it would be setting the pace, as my university is setting the pace now.

“Unfortunately, those who became governors before you didn’t have the love of Ekiti. Go and tell them that I said so. That is why we are facing so much hardship in the state. When I was a local government councilor in the 1960s, I didn’t receive a salary.

“That was when there was development in Ekiti Local Government. We thought that those who were coming to govern Ekiti would follow our footstep and our blueprints. But they refused to do so. However, this governor is doing a yeoman job.”

The elder statesman decried the poor condition of the federal road leading to ABUAD, urging the Federal Government to rehabilitate the road for the comfort of the commuters.

Babalola said the road had been in deplorable state for several years, thus subjecting motorists and passengers to hardship and damaging their vehicles.

He said: “The road to the hospital has become impassable. When I was coming here this morning, I knew what I went through on the road. It took us almost two hours to get here. That is how deplorable the road has become.

“The reason for this is that we don’t have honest people in government. I have written letters, made telephone calls, sent text messages to the Minister for Works to no avail. They would say they have put it in the budget, but nothing happens at the end of the day. God will deliver us from them.”

Oyebanji said he had scheduled a meeting with Works Minister Dave Umahi on the condition of Poly Road in the state capital.

The governor assured Babalola that the road would be attended to expeditiously.

He described the ABUAD founder as the highest tax payer in Ekiti since the state was created in October 1996, praising the eminent lawyer for building the hospital in the area.

“Health is wealth. What Aare Babalola did is not for himself; not all the rich remember their homes. He did not forget home. Baba is the largest employer of labour in the private sector in the state.

“The advert for the road construction has been placed and would be approved by March 21. I’m giving the assurance that the road will be constructed,” Oyebanji said.

Also, former Governor Adeniyi Adebayo said babalola was entitled to his opinion.

“I have no comment. Baba is entitled to his opinion. I have respect for him as our elder,” he said.

Ex-Governor Ayo Fayose said he would continue to respect the elder statesman, adding that young people do not argue with their elders in Yoruba land.

He said: “We don’t argue with our elderly persons in Yoruba land. So, we can’t join issues with our leader. Baba is old now. He is our father. We have tried our best. Those coming after us should do their best. Half a loaf is better than none. We cannot contest anything with him.”

The founder of Afe Babalola University, Afe Babalola SAN, has commended the performance of Biodun Oyebanji.

Babalola noted that the past governors perform below expectation because they abandoned the vision and the blueprint laid down by those who fought laboriosly for the creation of the state.

The foremost legal luminary who spoke on Monday at the commissioning of the ABUAD multisystem hospital Annex Odo-Ado, Igirigiri road in Ado Ekiti, regretted that governor Oyebanji didn’t govern the state much earlier.

Babalola who applauded Oyebanji for his giant strides in all sectors of governance which has brought a new lease of life to the people, said that his administration’s programmes and policies are in tandem with Ekiti founding fathers’ vision.

He said: “It pains me that you didn’t become governor of Ekiti much earlier than now. We know what we did to bring Ekiti state into existence. Our vision was for Ekiti to be the best state in Nigeria, that it will be setting the pace as my university is setting the pace now.

Afe Babalola: A man perpetually in a hurry

    • By Tunde Olofintila

When the Elder Statesman and Founder of the increasingly famous Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, ABUAD, Aare Afe Babalola, OFR, CON, SAN, came up with his dual dream of establishing a university that will teach Nigerians how a university, properly so-called, should be run and of institutionalizing quality and functional education, some skeptics would probably have looked at the now flourishing dream with some subdued optimism: some ‘let’s wait and see attitude’.

But today, the 15-year-old university, “ranked by the highly respected UK-based Times Higher Education Impact Rankings Number 1 University in Nigeria for two consecutive years (2022 & 2023) and Number 221 in the world in 2023” has continued to blaze the trail in the provision of qualitative and functional education as demonstrated by its performance at the November 2023 Bar Examination.

This became manifest again when the Law Graduates of the 15-years-old university recorded a 94% pass rate and carted home 21 First Class and 69 Second Class Upper Division in the said November 2023 Bar Examination, thereby giving vent and verve to NUC’s endorsement of the University’s College of Law as the “Best College of Law in West Africa.”

This remarkable improvement over the 2018 performance of ABUAD Law Graduate when they recorded 12 First Class and 65 Second Class Upper Division is a testament to the quality of educational training the Law Graduates received during their undergraduate studies in ABUAD under the watchful eyes of the ever hardworking Vice Chancellor, Prof. Smaranda Olarinde, the fatherly Provost College of Law, Prof. Tunde Yebisi, the ever-supportive Head of Department of Private and Business Law, Dr. Ife Bamidele and the highly cerebral Head of Department of Public and International Law, Dr. Nnamdi Ikpeze.

The superlative performance by ABUAD Law graduates in an examination moderated by outsiders is a further confirmation of the recent ranking of the university by the highly respected UK-based Times Higher Education Impact Rankings and the earlier acknowledgments by national and international education stakeholders.

The feat by the Law Graduates who were called to the Nigeria Bar last week came about a month after the same University recorded a 100% Pass Rate in the MBBS Examination where all the 161 Medical Students passed with 12 of the scoring Distinctions in various Medical Specialties.

The Star of the 2023 set of Medical Students who were Inducted at an elaborate ceremony on February 9, 2024 was Dr, Ernest Chukwuma who apart from emerging the Overall Best Graduating Medical Student, Chukwuma recorded five distinctions in Medical specialties: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Integrated Medical Courses and Pathology.

ABUAD’s match to stardom started very early after its establishment when the NUC, acknowledged the university as a “model, a benchmark, and a reference point for other universities” as well as the “pride of university education in Nigeria”. This was followed by AVCNU, which dubbed the then bourgeoning university as “the most successful Private University in Nigeria”.  On its part, UNESCO which endorsed it as “a world class institution of Higher Education”.

The ranking of ABUAD as the Best University in Nigeria for two consecutive years is neither a flash in the pan nor a fluke. Although the university is barely 15 years old, the huge steps it has already taken, the monumental achievements it has already recorded as well as the rich and luxuriant encomiums already showered on the university bear an eloquent testimony to the towering and intimidating profile of the 21st Century university situated in the heartland of Ado-Ekiti, South-West, Nigeria.

The first private university in Nigeria to take off on its permanent site with all human and material resources on ground, ABUAD is not only applauded outside the shores of Nigeria, but it has also been celebrated by both national and international education stakeholders, including the National Universities Commission, NUC, the Regulatory Authority for University Education in Nigeria, the Association of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, AVCNU, and UNESCO.

All these accolades have been further confirmed by the three partnerships the university consummated in 2023 with John Hopkins Hospital, USA, for Elective Clinical Training in the United States, the Memorandum of Understanding with King’s College, University of London, towards the establishment of the Afe Babalola African Centre for Transnational Education for which Babalola donated the sum of £10million in 2023 and the Memorandum of Understanding between ABUAD and Trinity Western University, TWU, Canada.

No wonder, Scott Royster, an American Admirer, who had visited many universities across 10 countries in Africa, said of ABUAD: “As I toured your university yesterday, I knew this time would be different. Every person I met, every building I saw, every hectare I covered, made me feel smaller and smaller. What you have built is that important, that big, that good. I commend you”.

Indeed, the university has overshot its expectations in the first 15 years of its existence. And this is just the beginning. With the way things are going, particularly with the continuous injection of funds into the system by Babalola, the Founder & Chancellor, a man who is perpetually in a hurry, better days are ahead.

The rating of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, ABUAD, as Number 1 University in Nigeria for two consecutive years (2022 & 2023) and Number 221 in the world in 2023 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings has got a further boost in Abuja last week when the ABUAD Chapter of the Law Students’ Association of Nigeria, LAWSAN won the 2023 Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN’s National Moot Court Competition.

The beauty of the victory by ABUAD Law students becomes the more manifest in that the 13-year-old university emerged the winner in a competition involving Federal, State and Private Universities in the country, many of which are several decades older than ABUAD.

ABUAD’s victory this time around is not surprising. During the April 26, 2017 Moot and Mock Trial Competition between Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba, and Afe Babalola University, College of Law, ABUAD students emerged victorious in the competition.

The journey to stardom began on April 13, 2023, when the 15 Law Students started preparations for the competition up to May 27, 2023, when they defeated Ekiti State University, EKSU, to emerge Winners at the State Level and consequently qualified to represent Ekiti State.

Still riding on the crest of their success at the State level, the 15 ABUAD Law students defeated Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo, Lagos, Osun State University, Osogbo, Lead City University, Ibadan and Crescent University, Abeokuta as well as Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, on August 18, 2023 to emerge Winners of the Advocacy Championship and qualified as the University to represent the Universities in the South-West geo-political zone of the country at the national Level.

This was followed on November 13, 2023, with the submission of arguments for both sides (Claimants and Defendants) by ABUAD, University of Jos, Benue State University, University of Calabar and Rivers State University as well as Arthur Jarvis University. The submitted arguments were to be graded by Independent Assessors to determine those who will qualify for the finals in Abuja.

At the end of the assessment, ABUAD emerged first while Benue State University came second, a development which qualified both universities to compete at the finals.

After about one hour of advocacy and oral adumbration on November 23, 2023, the Judges rose and retired to their Chambers for assessment and at the end of the day, ABUAD was declared Winner both on merit and on points.

Reacting to the national victory, the obviously elated Founder & Chancellor of the University, Aare Afe Babalola, OFR, CON, SAN, congratulated the Champions and reminded them to see their victory as just the beginning.

In Babalola’s congratulatory message which was delivered in his office with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Smranda Olarinde and the Provost, College of Law, Prof. Tunde Yebisi, in attendance, the elder statesman advised the students to see their victory this time around as a catalyst that will spur, propel, ginger, inspire and encourage them to greater attainments in the future.

He rounded off with his usual prayer for his students that they would be greater than him.

Afe Babalola varsity raises workers’ salary by 35%

The management of the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) has raised the salary of both its academic and non-academic staff by 35 percent.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Smaranda Olarinde explained that the gesture was to cushion the hardship occasioned by fuel subsidy removal.

Olarinde spoke in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State when staff of the institution stormed the ivory tower’s administrative building to show appreciation to the Founder Chief Afe Babalola.

She said: “We have come to thank you with all our heart for the 35 percent increase in our salaries. This is a divine dream that has come to pass. We have come to express our appreciation.”

Also speaking, a member of the varsity’s Governing Council, Supo Ijabadeniyi lauded Babalola for the gesture, adding that the pay rise once again demonstrated his unwavering commitment to workers’ welfare.

He added that the increment would help alleviate the financial burdens faced by its staff, saying “ABUAD is truly a pacesetter.”

He said: “When Nigerian workers were negotiating salary increase with the Federal Government, ABUAD founder told us ‘e ma mikan’ (don’t worry),  and gave us 35 percent increase across the board. Within 48 hours, the increment appeared on our salaries. We are happy and we appreciate this gesture, sir.”

Responding to the workers, Babalola said, said the gesture was informed by the prevailing economic situation caused by fuel subsidy removal.

“I know people are facing a lot of hardship and I know what their suffering means especially what they spent on transportation has gone very high, what they buy from the market has also gone up.

“On my own, I believe I should be able to keep my staff from ‘Japa’ syndrome; I want them to stay here. The best thing is to pay them something different from what they are getting at the end of the month.

“I heard the federal government has promised to do the same for their workers, whether they do so or not, I have decided on my own to find out the percentage government want to increase the salary of workers. I put them together whether state, federal or private and I decided to make ABUAD 35 percent increase in salary of all categories of workers.”

    • ABUAD founder seeks agric renaissance

Founder of Afe Babalola University in Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), has accused governors of misapplying financial allocations to local governments in their domains.

He said the “inactions” of the governors were stunting development at the grassroots as well as depriving the people of the benefits that they should ordinarily access without stress.

Babalola spoke yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, while declaring open the eighth edition of the Afe Babalola Agricultural Expo (ABAEX).

The eminent lawyer expressed dissatisfaction with the way governors run the third tier of government.

He said the governors have made the local governments the appendages of the state government, thereby rendering them ineffective.

Babalola urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that the nation’s 774 local government areas get their allocations directly from the Federation Account to ensure grassroots development and engender transparency.

The ABUAD founder explained that releasing funds to the local governments would enable their chairmen to contribute to the socio-economic development in the communities, especially in the support for farmers.

According to him, the country has over the years abandoned agriculture, which was responsible for increasing food insecurity.

Babalola stressed the need for government at all levels to invest massively in agriculture.

He said: “I am suggesting that local governments should be empowered. Each local government should set up farming equipment for farmers to hire. They should also earmark large hectares of land for the farmers to farm.

“When I was a councillor in those days, local government funds used to come directly to them. We all know what has been happening to their money.

“I think the current President (Bola Tinubu) should do all he can to ensure that local government allocations get to them directly and not through the governors because they (governors) steal a lot.

“There is no parent that will send their children to school – some to Master’s and Ph.D levels – only to come back and be asked to use cutlass to farm.

“The best the government can do now to revive agriculture is to buy modern implements to encourage people to farm. If local government funds get to them, they will be able to buy tractors for the people to rent.”

The chairman of the expo’s Local Organising Committee (LOC), Prof. Abiodun Ojo, said the vision of ABAEX is to encourage excellence and sustainable performance among farmers in Ekiti State.

The LOC chairman said it is also meant to increase value addition across all agricultural products.

“To prosecute this ABAEX 2023 successfully, including logistics and the award for five winners from each local governments and te overall winner from all the local governments in Ekiti, plus the empowerment programme for youths and girls, a total of N32,478,400 has been expended,” he said.

Babalola to AGF: give Nigeria new constitution

The Founder of Afe Babalola University at Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), has urged the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), to work towards giving Nigeria a new Constitution.

He said in the Constitution he proposed, politics should not be regarded as a transactional business.

The legal icon noted that the new constitution “shall mandate political office holders to treat their offices as avenues for rendering service to the people and not for making money, as well as deemphasise politics as lucrative business”.

Babalola, who spoke at the weekend during a reception in honour of the Justice minister, said: “This is why many Nigerians, including myself, have been urging the government to tackle the fundamental structures that have caused the inequality and poverty in the country.”

The legal luminary stressed that tackling the N87 trillion debt the current government inherited could not be by merely scratching the surface of the fundamental problems besetting the country.

“It is a common saying that when a person inherits a suffocating debt, he does not only lose his sleep; he cannot plan for any capital investment. While the government may be studying the situation, the truth is that Nigerians are becoming more and more impatient.

“The age-long adage is that we should not treat leprosy with the drugs meant for scabies. I repeat that what we need is a new Constitution.”

Babalola eulogised the Justice Minister for his legal accomplishments over the years.

He said: “Fagbemi is a pride to the chambers. He had learnt how to turn things around. Ladies and gentlemen, I believe that with his experience, Prince Fagbemi can turn things around and build a new Nigeria through a new constitution under which politics shall no longer be regarded as a transactional business.”

Reacting to Babalola’s promptings, Fagbemi said: “I have accepted that what I now need is advice. We can’t say that we don’t like the way they do things and leave them. We have to be involved, even though I am not a politician.

“I don’t want to just savour the encomiums of today without looking at the flipside. The flipside is the challenge the appointment and the office has posed.

“The issues before the country are not a one-man thing. People have the wrong impression that it is the Federal Government alone. We must appreciate the fact that Nigeria is a federation. When you talk of a federation, each has to man its post.

“If we must make a meaningful impact, we need to engage these tiers of governments. Let all of us be on the same page to fast-track development of the country,” he said.

Dignitaries at the event included Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, eminent lawyers from the Bar and some judges from the Bench, including Chief Adeniyi Akintola (SAN), and a former Attorney General of the Federation and Justice Minister, Chief Akin Olujimi (SAN).
