  • Independence Day: ADC tasks ruling class on national unity

…launches national handshake initiative to address division in the polity

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has tasked the political class of the country in the urgency of working to unify the country.

The party regretted that Nigeria seemed more divided than when it gained in 1960 considering the pervasiveness of ethno-religous crises, insecurity and economic hardship facing the people.

The party said it has become expedient, as the nation is going into another election year to address the divisive challenges confronting the country to pave way for genuine unity, growth and development of the country.

On its part, Ibrahim Ahmed, the National Organizing Secretary of the party said it is instructive to note that a national Handshake initiate was launched on the Independence Day to assist in surmounting the seeming political division in the country.

As part of its activities to mark the Independence Day, Ahmed at a media session on Monday in Abuja said the ADC Handshake across Nigeria initiative involved members of the party across the country shaking hands with every Nigerian they meet as way of genuine reconciliation gesture.

He said: “Today marks 58 years of our country, Nigeria, as an independent sovereign nation. And for 58 years, Nigeria leaders have not done much to unify the people who have been glued to their ethnic cleavages and interests.

“For 58 years, we have continuously witnessed widening gulf among Nigerian ethnic nationalities rather than emerge as nationalists which our founding fathers and first Republic politicians professed and stood for.

“We have seen our leaders’ slump from national leaders to ethno-religious champions. Our national institutions are degenerating and going extinct.

“Insecurity is heightening in intensity with devastation of lives and property of Nigerians by fellow Nigerians. This cannot be allowed to continue”.

On its efforts towards addressing the challenges, Ahmed noted that ADC is only preoccupied with building a strong united Nigeria.

“At inception, ADC’S founding fathers thought deeply on the symbols that can translate into a unifying force for Nigeria.

“Given the devastating effects of insurgency, terrorism and ethnic cleansing in the country, the ADC set aside today, our independence remembrance day as a special day to showcase our love for unity, love, peace and tranquility in Nigeria through our handshake philosophy,” he added.

He said the initiative will be an annual event to be sustained with the hope that all Nigerian would buy into, adding “We appeal to all Nigerians irrespective of tribe, creed or religion to remember that our strength is in our diversity.

“We want Nigerians to love Nigeria as their country and desist from doing anything that will be inimical to the growth and development of our dear country.

“We want Nigerians to see their fellow country men and women as one indivisible people.

“ADC believes in the one united Nigeria. We believe that only Nigerians can make Nigeria great again. ADC believes in good governance and equality of opportunity for all and we believe that the state should be the servant of the people and that democracy will lead to the progress and well-being of our people and nation”.

  • Obasanjo laments poverty rating of Nigeria

… Blames it on poor handling of economy by current leader

But addressing the Lagos State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) executive members who visited him in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital,

Obasanjo said the unpleasant status the country has found itself, can’t be separated from the poor handling of the economy by current leaders.

The two time elected President of Nigeria added that the nation does not deserve the poverty status it has earned currently, saying only quality leadership could redeem it.

He said it requires collective efforts to produce the right leader who would rescue the country from the current economic pains, asking if there was any Nigerian clamouring for the elongation of the sufferings by another four years.

He counselled ADC to manage its growth effectively and stay away from ideology that seeks to produce leaders that would not improve on the nation’s economic situation.

The former President who was reacting to the remarks by the  Lagos State chairman of ADC, Chief Tunde Daramola, on the economic situation of the country, wondered if Nigerians wanted a repeat of such leadership and the attendant challenges.

“As you rightly said, this is the hard time economically for all. It is for all of us, except the very few. Is that the type of you want to have for another four years?

“PDP cannot do it alone, ADC cannot do it alone. It must be collective efforts to get the right leadership for the country. Recently, the country was rated as the poorest country in the world.

“India is with population of 1.3b and Nigeria is about 200m, yet, we still have the most poorest citizens in the world. Nigeria does not deserve this and this is the honest truth,” Obasanjo said.

  • Abandoned projects worsening people’s suffering in Ogun – ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ogun State has expressed worry over abandoned infrastructural projects that littered   the state by Governor Ibikunle Amosun – led administration.

ADC said abandoned projects such as roads and bridges in parts of the state are not only a manifestation of lack of direction on the side of the government that initiated them, but also worsening the suffering of residents’ movement in and out of Ogun State.

In a statement on Wednesday  by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Abiola Odutola, ADC  identified places such as  Akute, Magboro,  Agbado Junction bridge, Ijoko, Sango, Lambe  among other areas where alleged abandoned and uncompleted road projects by Amosun’s government have remained daily nightmares for residents.

Odutola called on residents and indigenes to rise and save Ogun State from further socio-economic damage, explaining that abandoned projects was a clear signal that there “is a problem with policy direction.”

According to him, events in the last seven years are pointers to the fact that the state needs to be rescued from the era of wasting resources on the construction of several bridges that would not add any economic value to the state and the people.

“ADC remains resolute in its defence of the common people of Ogun State. We have perfected plans to ensure that we finish whatever we start and stand by the commitment of ADC to the War against Poverty.

“Residents are the ones bearing the brunt of the state of the projects as the cost incurred on car maintenance and transport fares in the areas have gone up by over 200 per cent in the past years. When it rains, some residents have to rely on some men, who carry them on their backs like babies.

“It is appalling that after more than six years, this administration has not completed projects it promised to finish in two years. Initially, it blamed the delay on the economic recession it claimed was caused by the Peoples’ Democratic Party but one should ask the governor how come the recession didn’t affect the commencement and completion of the bridges he constructed across Abeokuta within the same time,”   Odutola stated

But Governor Ibikunle Amosun has continued to assure indigenes and residents that his administration would complete the ongoing infrastructural projects in the state and even keep working till the handover date, to build more infrastructures in order to attract additional investors.

Osinowo added that the conduct of the congress was in line with the provisions of the ADC constitution and described the exercise as the first step to victory for the party in the 2019 governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, House of Assembly and LGAs elections in the state.

“I assure Ogun residents and Nigerians that the leadership of ADC at the state and national level is set to provide a responsible and responsive opposition till we takeover in 2019.

“This is against the alarming scenario of the unyielding actions, unemployment, economic lull, insecurity created by the ruling party that has failed to admit its failure to deliver the professed ‘Change’.

“The firsthand feelers from the electorate and residents indicate that a significant number of them are disillusioned with the style of governance adopted by the ruling party in the state and determined to seek alternative platform.

“A lot of civil servants, artisans and investing public are tired of poverty inflicted on the people by the ruling party, they described as an expired drug and they can’t wait for ADC to subvert it.”
