    Simi, 2Baba, Wizkid, MI, Ycee, Orezi, Tiwa Savage and other African singers have emerged winners at the 2017 edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) held Sunday night at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos

    Nigerian act Wizkid, led the winning pack, carting three awards – Song of the Year, Artist of the Year and Best West African Act (Male) – at the event hosted by international star Akon and Sophy Aiida.

    Meanwhile some of the winners have already taken to their social media platforms to show appreciation.

    Orezi, who won ‘Video of the Year’ posted, “This is such a big moment for me, “COOKING POT” BEST VIDEO OF THE YEAR AFRIMA 2017, this just goes to show that God is God, this goes to show that hard work pays, me and my team put in a lot of work in this project from making the audio, album art to making the video.

    “Shout out to the producer of the song @tymg_ you are such a talent brother, shout out to @adasacookey for this video, the funny thing is the moment Adasa submitted the final copy of this video to me I knew we were gonna win a lot of awards with this video, so much attention to details, from the cinematography to the dance, choreography @awanjo, costuming, shots, my performance, everything GehnGehn Like James Bond.

    A job well done is always rewarded-Locko (Central Africa)

    Cameroun artiste, Charles Arthur Locko Samba, known as Locko, who won ‘Best Central African Act (Male)’, says the award was a proof  of a job well done.

    “I don’t know how to thank you for having massively voted for me, proof that a job well done is always rewarded. Thanks to those supporting me since the beginning and @mrleo237 because it is also his victory”.

    Eddy Kenzo, Platinum record seller, who is also BET award winner and Airtel brand ambassador from Uganda, dedicated his award to his country, urging his colleagues to work harder for more.

    Wizkid, Davido battle for 2017 AFRIMA trophy

    Nigerian music Arch-rivals, Wizkid and Davido, may have yet another face-off as nominees at the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) 2017 scheduled for Nov. 12 in Lagos.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Wizkid and Davido, two of Africa’s most popular music stars, are up for the Best Male category award in West Africa.

    Femi Morgan, the organiser’s spokesperson, said in a statement in Lagos that the event which is to reward the best of African artistes, has led to a massive voting campaigns by nominated artistes.

    He said that the artistes would be relying on the love from music lovers to win the 23.9 Carat plaited gold AFRIMA trophy.

    Morgan listed other Nigerian music divas on the list to include Aramide, Seyi Shay, Tiwa Savage, and Yemi Alade who will be contending with Ghanaian pop-star, Becca, Malian Grammy Award winner, Oumo Sangare and Senegalese Pop-singer.

    Also, Viviane Chidid, to prove which star has the most dynamic voice to win the gold trophy for best Female Act.

    According to Morgan, the nominated artistes are pulling up their sleeves to slug it out with their regional and continental music contemporaries and legends at the event.

    “Southern African female nominees have some scores to settle at the 2017 AFRIMA Awards.

    “Amanda Black and Babes Woduno started a fresh beef at the
    South Africa Music Awards23, when Amanda Black beat Babes Woduno to SA’s Best Female Artiste of the Year awards 2017.”

    “She might get her rep back if she sweeps all contestants to win the Best Female Artiste in Southern Africa at AFRIMA 2017. Old rivalries in SA might rear its head at the Awards as AKA gets nominated in the same category as Nasty C and Emtee,” Morgan said.

    Morgan said, “other stars battling for recognition and rep are SA Jah Prayzah, Legend Jazzist, Hugh Masekela, and Nduduzo Makhatini.

    “The Cameroonians divas claim to run the show in the Central Africa region, as five nominated music divas bring to battle their different musical styles to win the 23.9 carat gold award.

    “The Gabonese Popstar, Bussine and the Angolan pop queen, Nsoki is in the game to burst their bubble and win the award for their home countries.

    “Meanwhile the King of Central Africa will emerge when Angola’s star RnB Sensation, Anselmo Ralph and Hip Hop star, Big Nelo while charges against DRC Makossa star, Fally Ipupa and RnB International Ke Black and Pop Star, Maitre Gims and the Cameroonians Pop artistes, Jovi and romantic RnB singer, Mr Locko.

    “Four Tanzanian divas are gunning for the awards for the Eastern region; they include Vanessa Mdee, who won the 2014 AFRIMA awards in the same Best Female Artiste in Eastern Africa category.”

    “She is pitched against Tanzanian love singers Feza, Lady Jaydee, and Nandy.

    Uganda’s Juliana Kanyomozi is a music big fish who will clash Kenya’s Victoria Kimani despite her West African and East African base,” he said.

    He also said that stars performing at the event include Cote D’ivoire’s DJ Arafat, Guinea’s MHD, Nigeria’s Mr Eazi, Runtown, Teckno and YCEE.

    African-American music star, Akon, has been unveiled as host of the 4th annual All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) scheduled to hold on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at the Eko Convention Centre of the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.

    Organisers announced on Tuesday, that the Senegal-born superstar will helm proceedings at the live broadcast of the award show scheduled to air on over 80 television stations and online platforms across the world.

    The singer will be supported by Ms. Sophy Aiida, a Cameroonian-French entertainment broadcaster, as co-host of the show.

    With a track record of outstanding success in the global music industry that has brought immense recognition to Africa’s creative energy and originality, Akon, a multi-Grammy award winning singer, songwriter, record producer and actor, has put his name in the Guinness Book of World Record as the number one selling artiste for master ringtones in the world.

    Ranked the fifth most powerful celebrity in Forbes’s Africa list of 40, Akon is also a business man and philanthropist who is passionate about the African continent.     Sophy Aiida is a prolific broadcaster who is known on radio as Cameroon’s biggest-girl-next-door. Sophy was born in Paris, moved to New York where she spent 15 years before returning to Cameroon to contribute to her homeland. The multilingual and multi-talented woman is regarded as one of Central Africa’s biggest show host. Sophy has also acted in rave African French-speaking movies and has also dropped a debut single.  Sophy Aiida is the co-founder of the Nakande Project, an initiative that supports the emergence of great young women through its education, empowerment and mentorship programmes.     Ahead of the main event, the AFRIMA Music Village is scheduled to hold on Friday, November 10. The Music Village is an evening of non-stop open music festival of live performances from African stars and nominees, with an audience of 40,000 people. It will also be broadcast live and produced by a prominent experiential marketing/production agency in Africa, Backstage Pro.

  • Lagos partners AU for AFRIMA 2017

    THE Lagos State has partnered the African Union Commission Government, AUC as the official host city for the 2017 edition of All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA).

    The AU has also reiterated its eagerness to sustain the partnership with Lagos State towards the 2017 edition of AFRIMA.

    The Commissioner of Social Affairs, African Union, Her Excellency, Amira Elfadil states that following the successful hosting of AFRIMA last year to the pride of the continent, we again request for the partnership of Lagos State as the Official Host City of the AFRIMA 2017 events for the purpose of showcasing the unique artistic, tourism and economic potentials of Africa’s leading city and promoting its strengths to a global audience for competitiveness.

    The AU noted that it has awarded the AFRIMA host city rights to Lagos for the second time because the state has a clear and progressive ‘development agenda’ and a vision for tourism, culture and entertainment for Africans. ‘This is in line with ‘the AU Agenda 2063, the Charter for African Cultural Renaissance and the Plan of Action on Cultural and Creative Industries’ the AUC noted.

    Reacting on behalf of the government of Lagos State, Commissioner of Information and strategy, Lagos, Steve Ayorinde said the state was honoured to play host to Africa for the 2016 AFRIMA events and look forward with a sense of responsibility to taking up the role of Official Host City for AFRIMA 2017.

    “His Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is committed to undertaking developmental projects that contribute to the socio-economic empowerment of the citizenry and the state. AFRIMA fits into the category of such initiatives that draw increased international attention to the cultural and artistic attractions of Lagos State,” Ayorinde stated.

  • Entry closes soon for AFRIMA 2017

    WITH the 2017 edition of the All Africa Music Awards underway, organisers have announced that entries, which officially opened on May 8, will be closing July 17.

    Presently, entries are open for artistes, songwriters, music/entertainment journalists, video directors, music producers, and DJs from across the African Continent and Diaspora.

    According to the organisers, the award seeks to celebrate excellence in musical artistry in Africa and the Diaspora, featuring 33 categories across the five regions of Africa and music genre.

    Thereafter will be the arrival of the 13-man jury of AFRIMA whose members are drawn from the 5 regions of Africa (two each from the Northern Africa, Southern African, Eastern Africa, Western Africa and Central Africa) and one African each representing the Diaspora –Europe and North Africa and a representative of the African Union. The jury’s role is to screen and categorise the submitted entries into Regional and Continental nominees making up the 33 award categories.

    To achieve this, there will be a two-week adjudication process in August 2017 which includes; a Pre-Screening, Screening and Selection and announcement of nominations. The world media announcement of AFRIMA 2017 nominees will be done, followed by the Public Voting which begins by September. AFRIMA academy voting will follow suit. All these processes will end at the Main Awards Ceremony on November 12 where winners will emerge.

    AFRIMA, the biggest music event on the continent, intends to foster peace and unity through instrumentality of music by regularly gathering all lovers of African music and more particularly, the artistes, to produce a world class event to a global audience.

    THE 2017 edition of the All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA 2017, is officially open for entries from Artistes, Songwriters, Music/Entertainment Journalists, Video Directors, Music Producers, DJs, Dancers from across the African Continent and Diaspora.

    The entry opened on May 8, 2017 and interested participants have until July 17, 2017 to register their entries on www.afrima.org. The works to be submitted must have been produced between August 1, 2016 and July 17, 2017.

    The AFRIMA awards is celebrating excellence in musical artistry in Africa and the Diaspora, featuring 33 categories across the five regions of Africa and music genre, with a reward of 23.9 carat gold plated AFRIMA trophy.

    In a ceremony which was attended by AU officials, members of the International Committee, past winners and nominees from Southern African, the African Union Commission, AUC, last Tuesday, at The Maslow Hotel, Sandton, South Africa, formally unveiled the 2017 edition of the All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA.
    Welcoming guests to the event, President/Executive Producer, AFRIMA, Mr. Mike Dada, revealed that the first activity on the continental awards event calendar is submission of entries which opened globally yesterday while submission closes on Monday, July 17.
    Dada advised artistes, managers, producers, record label owners, video directors, publicists and entertainment/music journalist to submit their works or those of their artistes within the stipulated timeline in order to stand a chance at the awards.
    “Irrespective of how popular an artiste or their works are in Africa, failure to submit for the awards means their chances of being nominated for AFRIMA 2017 is practically non-existent,” Dada stated.
    Other activities at the event calendar are; the jury adjudication process and nominees selection from July 29 – August 7 at Harare, Zimbabwe; world media announcement of AFRIMA 2017 Nominees’ list, August 8 at Harare, Zimbabwe; turn up Africa concept between August and October; the Africa music village, November 10, at the host city; finally the main awards ceremony in November 12.
    While delivering the African Union opening address at the event, Head of Culture Division, African Union Commission, Ms. Angela Martins, thanked the government of the Republic of South Africa and the people for receiving the AUC and AFRIMA for the calendar unveiling.
    “We would like to hail the All Africa Music Awards initiative for the laudable impact it has for its three editions (2014, 2015 and 2016). AFRIMA has been able to mobilize millions of people and renowned artistes from the five (5) regions of Africa,” she stated.
    AFRIMA is a music property developed to celebrate, reward and showcase the rich musical culture of Africa, stimulate conversations among Africans and between Africa and the rest of the globe.
