  • 21 navies unite against maritime crimes in the Gulf of Guinea

To contain illegal activities in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) region, navies of 21 countries across the world have indicated interest to deploy their men and material for this year’s Operation Obangame Exercise. Obangame is a Cameroonian word for togetherness.

The exercise, which is being coordinated by the United States African Mission, has ran for four consecutive years with Nigerian Navy (NN) actively participating.

Slated to begin on March 19 in Ghana, the exercise, which will last eight days, will cover the entire GoG region.

Briefing reporters at a pre- exercise conference held onboard the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Okpabana,  Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command (WNC) and the regional coordinator for the exercise, Rear Admiral Jonathan Ango said five NN platforms- three ships and two boats- as well as one Nigerian Airforce helicopter will participate in this year’s OBANGAME Express.

The vessels, according to Rear Admiral Ango, are NNS Thunder, NNS Okpabana and NNS Centenary; Shaldaq boat, NNS Ikot-Abasi, as well as Nigerian Air Force maritime patrol aircraft.

Ango stated that a total of 18 vessels will participate in the operation, adding that the focus would be on the interoperability and cooperation of the regional navies in pursuing criminals from the waterways.

He said countries such as the USA, UK, Belgium, Ghana, São Tomé and Principe, Spain, Turkey, Denmark, Portugal, Gabon, Congo and Central African Republic will take part in the countries as well as Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast, Benin Republic, Angola, Brazil, Cameroon, France and Norway.

The FOC, who said NN has benefitted greatly in its four years participation in the exercise noted that it provides opportunity for participating nations to find lasting solution to illegalities at sea to boost commerce and international trade.

Highlighting the need to jointly tackle the security challenges of piracy, poaching, smuggling, oil theft, trafficking and other transnational crimes, Rear Admiral Ango maintained that the exercise will strengthen the hot pursuit rules of the regional navies for more effective collaborations.

“For four years now, we have participated in Operation Obangame to enhance maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. “

  • Jonathan set to move against Obasanjo

Jonathan set to move against Obasanjo

•May revisit House committee’s power probe report

•Daughter may also be investigated over alleged deals in NNPC

•Oyinlola warns against desecration of Presidency

BARELY a week after his hard attacks on President Goodluck Jonathan, there were indications that the presidency may move against ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo by revisiting the probe of the $13.278billion power projects which were executed between 1999 and 2007 when Obasanjo was in office.

Already, one of the daughters of the ex-President is under investigation over alleged deals with a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and the Presidency during the same period. The said daughter was said to be benefiting to the tune of $300,000 per month in the unnamed deals.

Apparently aware of the moves, the immediate past governor of Osun State and former National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has warned aides to   President  Jonathan to leave the ex- president alone. He also warned against desecrating the Presidency as an institution.

He said at no time did Obasanjo propose the Interim National Government(ING) .

Findings by Th Nation revealed that some forces in the Presidency and the PDP had been working round the clock on how to subject Obasanjo to ridicule.

It was gathered that the 2009 report of the House of Representatives Committee on Power and Steel on the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) had been retrieved by the forces in order to hang something on Obasanjo.

The  committee had said that  about $13.278billion was spent on power projects between 1999 and 2007.

Also, the committee recommended the termination of 13 contracts and a review of 10 projects.

About 15 contracting and consulting companies were asked to be investigated by the appropriate agencies.

The committee , it was further learnt, recommended the  investigation of 18 people, including Obasanjo , by the EFCC and the ICPC, blaming them for the failure of the projects between 1999 and 2007 .

A highly-placed source, who spoke in confidence, said: “For his daring attacks on President  Jonathan, some forces in the Presidency and PDP are out for vengeance.

“They are plotting to revisit how  $13.278billion was spent on power projects between 1999 and 2007. They said there is a subsisting report of the House of Representatives on the wastage in the power sector.

“They said they want to demonstrate the government’s further commitment to the anti-corruption campaign by revisiting the NIPP projects.

“They are also placing Obasanjo under surveillance because they believe he is allegedly up to something against the government. That is their perception.

“They have accused him of allegedly promoting the ING idea which Obasanjo’s camp has denied.”

However, some stalwarts of the PDP are opposed to any move against Obasanjo, believing that the step will heat up the polity and portray the party in bad light.

A leader of the party said: “There are moves to demystify Obasanjo in one way or the other, but it might backfire.  For instance, the House report on the NIPP recommended the investigation of 18 people, some of whom are loyalists of President Jonathan. Some of them include Governor Liyel Imoke; the late Governor Olusegun Agagu; ex-Minister of State for Energy, Alhaji Abdulahamid Ahmed; a former MD of PHCN, Mr. Joseph Makoju; the CEO of TCN, Engr. G.O.P Osakue; Head Transmission, TCN, Engr. Dr. C.E. Ifesie; AGM, Lines, Engr. Mike Ezeudenna; the Chairman of the Technical Committee and General Project Manager, Engr. C. N.O. Nwachukwu; Deputy Chairman, Technical Committee, Engr. I. Onuoha; and the MD, NDPHC/NIPP, Mr. J. A. Olotu, among others.

“If they single out Obasanjo, it may become a scandal for the PDP government because many people will be rubbished.”

Another source also claimed that the Presidency has drawn a battle line against Obasanjo by placing one of his daughters under surveillance over alleged deals with one of the subsidiaries of NNPC and the Presidency

The source said: “The deals involving the daughter of the ex-president at the NNPC subsidiary and the Presidency are allegedly worth $300,000 per month. We don’t know why the girl is now being subjected to investigation because her father criticized the President, “

He said the forces are determined to lay all the cards on the table for Nigerians and the international community to  see “ those who criticizing Jonathan .”

In a statement yesterday,  Oyinlola warned presidential aides against desecrating the Presidency with falsehood and casting aspersions on ex- President Obasanjo.

Obasanjo , he said, was not behind the ING project as being insinuated.

Oyinlola said in the statement : “On Saturday,  February 14, presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, issued a statement in response to an earlier press conference by former President Obasanjo. Abati, who obviously spoke on  behalf of President Jonathan, alleged that General Obasanjo condemned the recent postponement of elections in the country because he was scheming with “others within and outside the country” to

enthrone an ING which he claimed Obasanjo wanted to head.

“I feel it would deepen the current discourse in the country, if I call the attention of President Jonathan and, indeed, the entire country to former President Obasanjo’s position on the ING and all other political arrangements, post 1999, which are at variance with the constitution.

“On  May 28, 2007, 24 hours before the swearing in of Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua as President and Dr Jonathan as Vice President, General Obasanjo made a broadcast to the country in which he clearly stated that in the new Nigeria which emerged after the exit of the military in 1999 and which he was handing over after piloting it for eight years, terminating on May 29, 2007, there would never be a place for coups and the Interim National Governments again.

“Indeed, he listed elimination of coups and negation of the possibility of having any ING and other political arrangements that are not rooted in the constitution as once regarded as the preserve of a privileged few, are now commonly accessible to all. These are solid foundations upon which future governments can build.

“In Science and Technology, in Agriculture and Food Security, our nation has made tremendous and noticeable progress. Nigeria is not only becoming a food sufficient nation but also a food-exporting nation.

“Our industrial take-off is today more assured than at any other time in the past years. There still remains a lot that we must do. I have confidence that we are well on our way to a glorious destination.

“With determination, with tenacity and with the courage of our conviction, we can continue to face the future with confidence. We have set for ourselves ambitious targets that will make us one of the largest economies in the world by the year 2020. It is attainable and achievable but if we divert from the path of economic prudence, reform

and realities, we can miss the road. Then, the year 2020 will be amirage. God forbid!

“We have waged relentless battles to correct many of the ills in our society. We have demonstrated our determination to bring about a more moral society. We see a bright and prosperous future for our country.

“I am particularly gratified to note how united our country is today, better than any other time in the past. In the past few months, Nigerians, from every corner of the country have amply demonstrated their yearnings for national unity, for harmony and for progress.

“The recent events have indicated that we are no longer divided along ethnic, tribal, religious lines or north-south divide. We have become simply Nigerians interested in the development and progress of our country. This is a great gain. Let us respect this spirit of oneness and unity in all that we do from now on.

“Tomorrow, I will hand over the instruments of governance to Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, our newly-elected President. He is a man in whom I have great confidence. I have worked with him and observed him at very close quarters. I know his track record and his pedigree. I have confidence that he will discharge his mandate to the satisfaction of all Nigerians. I pledge my continued support for him and his Government.

“Nigeria is in a better shape today than any time since 1979. We have

started to move to the glory that God has ordained for us. Let me end this farewell address by thanking all Nigerians for eight years of working together for our fatherland. I am particularly grateful to my critics for keeping me constantly on my toes. Let us continue in the same spirit of what is best for our country motivated by patriotism and fear of God. I bid you good night and goodbye. God bless you. God bless Nigeria.”

  • CAC pastor warns against thuggery, rigging

CAC pastor warns against thuggery, rigging

A cleric, Pastor (Dr) John Olushola Ojo, has called on politicians to keep away from thuggery and rigging in the coming general elections.

Pastor Ojo, who is the chairman of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Odi-Ajaye Zonal Headquarters, Ogba, Lagos, said in an interview yesterday in Lagos that “thuggery and rigging are two major vices which are inimical to the nation’s electoral process.”

“Both thuggery and rigging are twins. They go together. They give birth to other problems which militate against the rapid advancement of our country.

“In the light of this, I warn our politicians to eschew thuggery and rigging. They are against divine laws,” he said.

On the alleged N7billion bribe reportedly given to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to campaign against the All Progressives Congress (APC), Pastor Ojo said: “I do not believe this story. But if it is true, it is a desecration of churches which are homes of hope, comfort, peace and holiness. It is bad. It is against the teachings of Jesus Christ as contained in the Holy Bible.

“If it is true, those who got the money are inviting the wrath of God. I do not believe the story. People can say anything to destroy as a result of hatred. A true man of God will not involve himself in bribery. It is a sin to give a bribe and it is a sin to accept it.”

On the postponement of elections, he said: “I know that many people are complaining about the shift of the polls. But I want people to be calm and believe that God is in control. We should pray that elections hold on the new dates.”

On our youths, Pastor Ojo said: “Our youths deserve special treatment because they are the future leaders. Any government in power after these elections must attach much importance to the welfare of youths. They must be empowered. They need jobs; they need training. They should not be left to waste.”

Pastor Ojo, who will soon launch a foundation to take care of widows and orphans, said immoralities in our society could be traced to the lack of honesty.

“We have challenges here and there because of our failure to embrace honesty in all our dealings with our fellow human beings. And where there is no honesty, God will not be there because He hates dishonesty,” he said.

  • Amodu vents: Nothing personal against Keshi

Amodu vents: Nothing personal against Keshi

Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation and former Super Eagles coach, Amodu Shuaibu has posited that he has nothing personal against out-of-contract Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, despite asking the ‘Big Boss’ to stop ‘hanging around’ as the Super Eagles coach.

56-year old Amodu, who was Keshi’s boss when both men qualified Nigeria for the 2002 World Cup, has been in the news lately, asking his former assistant to ‘stay on as a beggar’ if he had no reputation, after he (Keshi) failed to qualify the country for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

But Amodu says despite the criticism, he has nothing personal against Keshi, describing the former Mali coach as his brother.

“Keshi is my brother, I love him and I like him and every day I will talk good about him,” Amodu said of Keshi.

But despite his criticisms of the embattled Keshi, Amodu insists that the former Super Eagles captain should announce he is quitting the Super Eagles coaching job and leave the space for someone else.

“The situation as it is today, for me, if I were him, I won’t continue on the job. I would have just said ‘thank you Nigerians, sorry I’ve failed, but I can try another time but let another person try now’. But this is my personal opinion and it is not official. The NFF will still decide what they want to do with him,” Amodu added.

  • Why I’m against zoning in Bayelsa, by Amange

Senator Nimi Barigha-Amange has kicked against zoning in Bayelsa State, urging the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to organise primaries for aspirants.

The chapter has zoned the Bayelsa East Senatorial District ticket to Brass Local Government Area.

Sources said that Amange was among party stalwarts who signed the communique after the decision on zoning was made by the stakeholders.

The district, which elected Senator Clever Ikisikpo in 2011, comprises of Brass, Ogbia and Nembe local government areas. Apart from zoning it to Brass, the stakeholders also clarified that the ticket should go nto  Akassa speaking-people of Brass.

But, Amange, who hails from Nembe, has opposed the zoning, saying that it smacks of the politics of exclusion.

President Goodluck Jonathan is said to be backing the Chairman of Silverbird Television, Mr. Ben Murray-Bruce, who hails from Akassa, for the slot.

However, Amange, who declared his intention to return to the Senate, said he was not part of zoning.

Speaking in Yenagoa, he said the principle of zoning should not be applied at the expense of merit and experience.

He said: “From 1999 till date, Bayelsa East has always been represented by new senators in each session. In the National Assembly, there is advantage in having a ranking senator instead of a new one.

“New legislators are welcome, but experience shows that second term legislators have strategic advantage. The principle of zoning and power shift is useful in our political system; however, the principle should not be applied at the expense of merit and experience.”

He said his declaration came after extensive consultations with leaders and various stakeholders of the PDP.

He insisted that the decision was based on the need to consolidate the achievements of the PDP in the promotion of democracy and the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Amange said:  “Bayelsa East Senatorial District is the economic heart-beat of our state. It hosts many multinational oil companies. The Brass LNG and other maritime facilities boost economic activities, create jobs, and spread prosperity.

“The Nembe-Brass highway should be taken over by the FG to open up the senatorial district for investment, peace and progress. Effective legislation at the level of the Senate is required to consolidate the great strides of the state government.”

Amange, who was one of the Bayelsa State representatives at the recent National Dialogue Conference and current Chairman, Governing Board of University of Petroleum Institute, Effurun, said his experience is an asset to the party.

He said: “My national and international networks have been expanded by being a delegate at the confab. The recommendations of the confab call for focused and patriotic legislative work at the Senate.

“I offer myself to be a part of the National Assembly that will usher in a new era of justice and equity in Nigeria.”

  • ‘PDP’s propaganda against Oshiomhole ‘ll fail’

‘PDP’s propaganda against Oshiomhole ‘ll fail’

Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s media aide Prince Kasim Afegbua, in this interview with OSAGIE OTABOR,  speaks on the giant strides of  the administration and other issues.

The PDP has said that Governor Adams Oshiomhole will not be able to complete many projects before the expiration of his second term. What is your view?

The opposition will express worry because they do not understand the mechanics of governance. They don’t have what it takes to provoke some initiatives that could have well-meaning impact on the people of the state. They presided over the state for 10 good years and their record of performance showed an abysmal failure in all areas and sectors of Edo State. It is expected that they will continue to raise worry and doubts over the monumental achievements that we have recorded because that has put an end to their claim that Edo State is not worth investing in. They said the state was poor, had no money but they were lining their pockets while the state was dripping away. Comrade Oshiomhole has been able to inject new life into the main stream of Edo politics, economy and social well-being.

outing from pillar to pillar about projects that will not be completed.

Did they build one when they held sway? We have built several hospitals across the state. To run criticism is very easy but to be an author you have to dig deep into the mold. The authentic Edo people know for too well that the Comrade Governor is better equip to manage the affairs of the state in a prudent manner than all the pretenders that we have seen in recent years.

Will there be new projects before the end of Oshiomhole’s tenure?

Certainly there will be new projects. The storm water project will be completed because that is getting a blessing of the World bank. We took a bond to service that. People don’t understand the project. We are not only doing the drainages, we are building on top of it. You need to go round to see the quality of the work. Only when you are affected by flooding that you will know the impact of what we are trying to do. Collecting water from several flooding areas into the Ogba river and other rivers is not a mean feat. They can sit back because they will not go round to do inspection. It is not enough to sit back and be arm chair critic because they want to be heard in the media. The leadership of the PDP in this state don’t have the intellectual understanding to be able to explain how government work because when they were here, they were sharing money.

Is it true that the governor has spent much on private jets?

The governor does not charter flight to foreign trips. He takes public transportation that is the truth. Most times he gets friends who bring jets to him to take him to where he wants to go. Didn’t forget he was a former president of the NLC. He has friends  across the states of the federation. He got people who appreciated him. Some people funded his election, friends and associates. He is got enormous goodwill that you can’t quantify. When people see him taking jets, they think that it was chartered. He is the only governor that travels alone without ADC or CSO outside the country. Mention any PDP governor that travels outside this country alone. It is only Oshiomhole that does that. Go to the Airport and find out. Oshiomhole travels alone. If there is an urgent issues on matters of state and there are no flights, he can charter flight and that is not out of place.

What is the priority of this government in the next two years.

We have a developmental agenda factored into economic blueprint which we have been pursuing and in the second term attention is purely focus on job creation. By now if we were able to sell the Edo House for example, we would have invested the money here to build a five star hotel. We are going to find another route to ensure that we build the hotel. Other areas of employment will also be looked into and that is why the Shoprite project is still on-going. They have resolve the issue in the land. The Presco Oil Company is recruiting over 1000 persons. They are doing expansion because of the land we have accorded them. Our priority is generally to create employment but you cannot do that without having platforms. We have been able to build on infrastructure in the first term and we are continuing with that and to consolidated and complete those ones that we have done. It is the responsibility of government to now leverage on the economic value of those infrastructure so that we can gain from it. If you are producing banana and you can take them to the city where the demands are high, we are going to remain at that subsistence level. We have open up roads in the rural areas and people are now bringing their goods to the cities. We will complete roads under construction. We are going to do more schools and build more hospitals. We expect that the government that will take over from Oshiomhole will continue from where we stop because government is continuos.

Do you see the APC winning next year’s election, despite the defection of Ikimi and others?

Ikimi’s electoral fortune is not formidable enough to sway voters. I think Ikimi is over celebrated. It is understandable that Ikimi is a paper tiger but  he does not have electoral value. The advantage of APC has going for it is that Oshiomhole can point to things he has done. He can campaign of issues and tell the people what he has done. The PDP will only be saying what they intend to do. Edo people know the PDP history of performance. This state will remain an APC state for many years. Whoever the PDP fielded cannot whip up the kind of endorsement that will be require to upstage the APC. We have done so much. We won’t miss Ikimi.

Oshiomhole supported some lawmakers to get elected in 2011. Is he regretting his actions?

Regret on one side, but he is going to do it again.

    What kind of regret?

Some persons who pretentiously appear good and electable, the governor put all his credentials and political capital into their campaigns, they got elected and midway into the stream, they bolted away in terms of retirement benefits from the PDP. You know the PDP has so much to dispense away in terms of patronages. In 2015, the governor will be so much involve because APC is like a movement. People must get to understand that this party is pro development and when you are going to get into the APC platform to contest election, that has to be ringing on the aspirants head.

  • PDP chiefs kick against zoning

    PDP chiefs kick against zoning

Some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State have criticised the planned zoning of the governorship ticket to the North senatorial district.

According to them, zoning the position rather than considering popularity and population could lead to the wrong choice, which could lead to protest votes and loss of the election.

A former PDP Chairman in Ndokwa West Local Government, Godwin Mgbabago and a former member of the House of Assembly, Joe Adigwe, said at the weekend that historical facts and figures showed that the 2011 governorship election in Delta did not produce results.

The PDP chiefs warned that “those fronting and anointing inexperienced politicians do not mean well for the PDP.

“On the basis of demography and electoral value, everyone knows the Urhobo control over 60 per cent of the voting strength in Delta State. “Yet, they have been out of power for eight years and their representation in the Federal Government has been limited to two appointments compared to Delta North, which has over 14 appointments.”

  • Some natural ammunition against Ebola Virus fever (2)

EBOLA VIRUS is still at the centre stage of public thought. How I wish it will rapidly give way to loftier discussions. I say this because, like the spoken word, thoughts have a magnetic force. There is nothing that comes into being through us that we did not originate in the thought. If you are in a bus and you think intensely about the passenger some seats ahead of yours, he or she is likely to be connected to you by your thought, and look back in the direction of this thought… to you. Often, we suddenly remember some-one we hadn’t seen in a long, long while, and, the next day or soon after, that person walks in or telephones us, and says had been trying to reach us! Sometimes, we are trying to telephone someone at the same time that person is trying to reach us. Nature informs us through these events that thoughts are living forces which Nature beings, like porters, fashion into appropriate thought forms. These forms are seeds attached to their authors who must  reap bountiful harvests of them someday. There was a time in Lagos the uniform of the traffic police was changed to yellow colour. Many people nicknamed these traffic men yellow fever. And, sure enough, soon after, a new epidemic of yellow fever disease broke out! In this respect, the genuine efforts to find a way out of the present Ebola virus jungle should be well helped if frivolous talk and jokes about Ebola virus are stopped, to give way to thoughts emanating from serious efforts.

Last Friday, I gave a talk on these matters at International Transport Workers Federation (ITWF) cancer screening and Ebola virus fever seminar which took place at the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) State Office Abule-Egba. The talk was more of a review of the first part of this series published in this newspaper the previous day.

     Fear

Ebola virus fear continues to envelope Lagos in a thick pall. And fear, deriving from thought, can manifest in the thought-form of that which is feared. Someday, this thought from may, in turn, materialise in the physical form of the thought-form, in this case, Ebola virus fever epidemic. To avert an epidemic, the government of Lagos State has asked the Federal Government to close the boarders. But the Federal Government is hesitant because closing the boarders may suffocate the economy and cause serious social problems. This is not a time to do nothing. A middle-ground can be found. That middle ground may involve blood screening for all immigrants from all regions of the world where this disease has occurred in epidemic or pandemic proportions. The government should investigate how the Liberian who brought Ebola virus to Nigeria beat immigration officers to it. They should have known he was a Liberian and stopped him. It for Ebola screening is because we do not investigate well enough and punish culprits that corruption thrives in Nigeria and lives are endangered. Who knows, this Liberian may have tossed $100 at someone to get in. Wasn’t this how guns, military guns, got into this country and we now have Boko Haram on our hands? Let us not forget, also, that fireworks were banned in Nigeria in 1962 during the Western Nigeria crisis, but are still “heavenly” imported into Nigeria every year; And, irrespective of police reminders of the ban every Christmas season, fireworks enliven the Christmas season, our even inside police barracks! This shows we are an irresponsible people and need a responsible government to make us mature and behave well.

     Bubonic Plague

We are probably irresponsible and misbehaving because we are not well taught the history of the suffering of other people who had been killed in their millions by diseases similar to Ebola virus fever. Personally, I do not wish that we experience the human holocausts they went through for our eyes to open wide. That was why, last week, I promised to include in this series a disease, bubonic plague similar in its   devastation of human lives as Ebola virus.

Last week, I hinted that when it struck England in 1348, it killed 1.7 million of the 4 million residents of London.

     Garlic

Last week, I suggested the consumption of garlic with every meal as a way of boasting the immune system, which god has placed in our bodies to destroy any germ or parasite, including Ebola virus, which may seek to destroy it. I also mentioned bitter kola. Dr. Robert Young, and American researcher and author of the book pH Miracle, says Ebola virus has been inhibited in cell cultures in which non-toxin doses of Garcinia kola (Bitter kola) were used against it. He suggests as well massive doses of Vitamin C to neutralise the free radicals Ebola virus attacks the body with. Many doctors continue to emphasise the washing of hands with soap and bleach without reference to the immune system. Understandably, drugs cannot boost immunity, and doctors have little or no training in nutrition or hebalism, which offers natural ways of maintaining and boosting this design of God in our bodies. It is also for this reason that I wish to present an account of the four prisoners who survived the Bubonic Plague which must have killed more than about 200 million people in Europe and Asia in epidemics and pandemics. Thereafter, I will present accounts of this human travail world-wide to warn that the conditions for it are present here, and we should take immediate steps to educate ourselves more about the immune system and change our present diet to God’s Creation Plan for feeding our bodies, as Dr. George Malkhmus did so to survive his stomach cancer.

    The four prisoners

Known as “the four thieves and their herbs” on goggle, an account of their story by Daves Garden is this:

“The Plague was known as The Great Pestilence” or “The Great Plague”. Later it was called the “Black Death Plague” and compared to the “Asian Bubonic Plague”, the variation of the stories vary in time from the mid-13th century to the 16th Century and location from Italy, France and England. It is true the plague resurfaced over and over again during those many years, so any time frame may also be true.” The story I first heard many years ago was that the local magistrates needed men to haul away the rapidly accumulating dead bodies. It happened there were four thieves in prison who had been arrested for stealing from the homes of the dead, and they were conscripted to haul the bodies. One of the thieves had a mother who was a herbalist, she made an herbal vinegar the men used on a fabric handkerchief over their mouths and noses while they robbed the dead. She supplied more of the same as the thieves took on their assigned tasks. The men survived carting away dead and decaying bodies without catching the plague, and the magistrates took note. The magistrate offered them a deal. The thieves could have been hung for their crimes, or divulge their secret and go free. They gave up the recipe. The tales continue to say that many others used the herbal vinegar and survived.

“The recipe ingredients vary from tale to talk, but with todays’ science we know that most of the herbals reportedly used are antifungal and antiseptic. I know from personal experience that the four thieves recipe I use make a fine insect repellant, and I make a new patch to every spring to use on me and my pets. The recipe is for an insect repellant, and not to be taken internally as some of the recipe variations suggest. The recipe contains Rosemary, Rue or Herb of Grace, Garden Sage, Lavender, Wormwood and peppermint steeped in a base of raw, unpasteurised, fermented apple, cider vinegar with added fresh garlic after the initial brewing.

“Various other recipe include the addition of Thyme. Lemon Balm, Meadows sweet, Marjoram and Jumper berries”. Almost all the recipe I use contain the ingredient I use plus other additions, but I stick with the ingredients common in most recipes”.

All the herbs named by Daves Garden are used orally in natural medicine as shown, for example, by ANNE ARNOTT in her book, FRUITS OF THE EARTH, which says of Garlic:

“Garlic is mentioned in Number 11 as being one of the vegetables which children of Israel greatly missed when they were traveling through the wilderness to the Promised Land. They had learned of its very great value when they were slaves in Egypt. Garlic was felt by the ancient Egyptians to give them strength and vitality and stamina, and was given daily to their slaves who were constructing the pyramids. In fact, it is said that the first strike known in history occurred when the slaves downed tools because their daily garlic ration was witheld while they were building the Pyramid Cheops. Garlic has been proved to be one of the most antiseptic of all herbs. It is thought to be useful in almost every physical ailment, and is a wholesome regular addition to food. Dr. Herbert Schweitzer is said to have used garlic to help cure the dreaded disease of Cholera and typhus (typhoid). Lips cancers are said to have been cured by its use. Asthma sufferers have greatly benefitted from its use. Tuberculosis patients were greatly helped by it before the use of modern drugs. It has been a proven help in many cases of high blood pressure. This is because the herb is found to open up the blood vessels reducing pressure. It has stopped angina pains and dizziness.

“One of the most interesting recent discoveries about garlic was recorded in The Lancet in 1973, where its excellent effect in helping to prevent atherosclerosis, and reducing cholesterol levels in the blood was described.

“Many people in this country hesitate to use garlic, except in great moderation in cookery, because of its almost overpowering smell and taste. But in 1920, a German doctor, J.A Hofels, came to live in England. He had made an extensive study of garlic and knew of what a wonderful food and medicine it was. He found a way to encapsulate the vital garlic oil, containing the most active part of the herb and all its essential oils in capsules known as garlic perles”.

TODAY, KYOLIC GARLIC and KWAI garlic are among the most sought after brands worldwide.

Kyolic is aged for about 16 months and its extracts are said by researchers to be about 50 times more potent than natural garlic.

ON THE INTERNET J.B Bardot report: “In the 17th century, grave diggers in Europe drack wine containing crushed garlic or ate fresh garlic in an effort to ward off plague. The amazing disease-fighting have repeated tested true in thousands of studies. Garlic possesses potent, natural antibiotic and anti-microbial properties able to protect against plague. Garlic is also high in antioxidants that destroy free radicals, supporting a strong immune system. The active ingredient in garlic, allicen, contains antibacterial, antifungal and anti-viral properties known to kill numerous disease causing bacteria. Because garlic has such immune-building properties, regular supplementation acts prophylactically, preventing bubonic plague from taking hold.”

    The Plague

I promised to provide information on the deadliness of Bubonic Plague, which kills devastatingly like an ebola  fever epidemic, the following report fulfill that promise:

The first recorded appearance of the plague in Europe was at Messina, Sicily, in October of 1347. It arrived on trading ships that very likely came from the Black Sea, past Constantinople and through the Mediterranean. This was a fairly standard trade route that brought to European customers such items as silks and porcelain, which were carried overland to the Black Sea from as far away as China.

“As soon as the citizens of Messina realized what horrible sickness had come abroad these ships, they expelled them from the port—but it was too late. Plague quickly raged through the city, and panicking victims fled, thus spreading it to the surrounding countryside. While Sicily was succumbing to the horrors of the disease, the expelled trading ships brought it to other areas around the Mediterranean, infecting the neighboring Island of Corsica and Sardinia by November.

“Meanwhile, plague had travelled from Sarai to the Genoese trading station of Tana, east of the Black Sea. Here Christian merchants were attacked by Tartars and chased to their fortress at Kaffa (Caffa). The Tartarts besieged the city in November, but their siege was cut short when the Black Death struck. Before breaking off their attack, however, they catapulted dead plague victims into the city in the hopes of infecting its residents.

The defenders tried to divert the pestilence by throwing the bodies into the sea, but once a walled city had been struck by plague. Its doom was sealed. As the inhabitants of Kaffa began to fall to the disease, the merchants boarded ships to sail home. But they could not escape the plague. When they arrived in Genoa and Venice in January of 1348, a few passengers or sailors were left alive to tell the tale.

But few plague victims were all that was required to bring the deadly illness to mainland Europe.

The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 75 to 200 million people and peaking in Europe in the years 1346-53. Although there were several competing theories as to the etiology of the Black Death, analysis of DNA from victims in northen and southern Europe published in 2010 and 2011 indicated that the pathogen responsible was the Yersinia pestisbacterium, probably causing several forms of plague.

    Consequences

     Death toll

There are no exact figures for the death toll; the rate varied widely by locality. It killed some 75 to 200 million people in Eurasia. According to medieval historian Philip Daileader in 2007: The trend of recent research is pointing to a figure more like 45-50 percent of the European population dying during a four-year period. There is a fair amount of geographic variation. In Mediterranean Europe, areas such as Italy, the south of France and Spain, where plague ran for about four years consecutively, it was probably closer to 75 – 80 percent  of the population. In Germany and England… it was probably closer to 20percent.

The most widely accepted estimate for the Middle East, including Iraq, Iran and Syria, during this time, is for a death rate of about a third. The Black Death killed about 40 percent  of Egypt’s population. Half of Paris’s population of 100,000 people died. In Italy, Florence’s population was reduced from 110-120 thousand inhabitants in 1338 down to 50,000 in 1351. At least 60 percent  of Hamburg’s and Bremen’s population perished, and a similar percentage of Londoners may have died from the disease as well. Before 1350, there were about 170,000 settlements in Germany, and this was reduced by nearly 40,000 by 1450. In 1348, the plague spread so rapidly that before any physicians or government authorities had time to reflect upon its origins, about a third of the European population had already perished. In crowded cities, it was not uncommon for as much as 50 percent  of the population to die. This disease bypassed some areas, and the most isolated areas were less vulnerable to contagion. Monks and priests were especially hard hit since they cared for the Death’s victims.

Is the Health Minister listening? Is President Jonathan listening? Ebola virus is nothing to drag the foot over, or play politics with. If the boarders are not to be closed, serious screening has to be done. In Lagos, the federal or state government can pick the bill of the hospital shut on account of the Ebola virus fever death there. This will naturally include rent, salaries and income of the proprietors. The lives of our doctors who will handle quarantine settlements should be under life insurance cover, to encourage them.

FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup: Falconets set for big win against Mexico

With the FIFA Under 20 Women’s World Cup underway in Canada, the Falconets have promised to leave no stone unturned in their attempt to secure a remarkable outing for Nigeria at the Mundial.

Nigeria is one of Africa’s representatives at the tournament and having made six appearances at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Falconets are determined to put on a brillant performance this time round.

The mood in the team’s camp is that of a eagerness, as all the players are in fine health and there are no injury concerns. The players are all anxious to know who will make the team list for the Falconets’ first match.

Falconts’ coach Peter Dedevbo said he remains confident of the calibre of players at his disposal and that he has assembled the best legs that can take on any team in Canada.

“I have assembled some of the best players in the country, they are smart and experienced. Bringing players from the Under -17 team that went to Costa Rica and others from the Super Falcons. This has brought competition to the team,” Dedevbo revealed.

He confirmed that the team had played a couple of friendly matches as build up to the tournament. “I’m aware of the previous records of the team and I’m confident this time around, my target is to bring home the trophy,” Dedevbo said.

Speaking on the Falconets’ first match against Mexico, the former Flamingoes coach said the players were physically and mentally ready for the match. “I’m confident with the level of training we have had, mark my words the team will make Nigeria proud”.

Ahead of the Mexico encounter, team captain, Patience Okaeme, promised that the team would do its best to get victory which she said would boost the psyche of the players.

“We owe it to ourselves to make Nigeria proud by winning not only our first match but all our matches,” Okaeme said.

Her team mates Sarah Nnodim and Courtney Dike said the players would play as a team to ensure victory.

“We are happy the team is not built around particular players, that unity will give us the needed victory. We urge Nigerians to pray for the good outing of the team,” Dike said.

The Nigeria/Mexico match comes up tonight at 8pm in Canada (12 midnight Nigerian time). The match will be played at Moncton Stadium.
