Achievements in aviation, economic planning too glaring to ignore – Reps Deputy Spokesperson

The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has said the achievements of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the aviation sector and in the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning over the past two years are too significant to be downplayed by the opposition.

Speaking to journalists at the National Assembly on Thursday during the House’s Open Week event, Agbese highlighted major strides recorded in both sectors under the current administration. He attributed the progress to the clear policy direction of President Tinubu and the pragmatic leadership of the respective ministers.

“What we are seeing today in aviation and in budget and economic planning is not by chance. It is the result of purposeful leadership driven by President Tinubu and delivered through competent ministers like Festus Keyamo and Senator Atiku Bagudu,” Agbese said.

According to him, the aviation sector under Minister Festus Keyamo has witnessed visible reforms that are restoring public confidence and attracting international partnerships.

“Airports across the country are undergoing significant upgrades, terminals are being expanded, facilities modernised, and long-abandoned projects are being completed. In Abuja, Lagos, Kano and Port Harcourt, the difference is clear,” he said.

Agbese also praised Keyamo’s decision to halt the controversial Nigeria Air project initiated by former Minister Hadi Sirika, describing it as a demonstration of transparency and accountability.

“For the first time, we have a minister who is not afraid to stop a project midstream when it raises red flags. That’s leadership with integrity,” he said.

He noted that the ongoing concessioning of airport terminals, revival of safety regulations and improved relations with international airlines are attracting foreign direct investment and positioning Nigeria as a hub in West Africa.

Agbese further said one of Keyamo’s most applauded achievements was the recovery of over 831 million dollars in trapped revenue owed to foreign airlines.

“By collaborating closely with the Central Bank of Nigeria, he devised a phased payout schedule that cleared the backlog of unsurrendered ticket revenue at a blended rate and secured cabinet approval to prioritise future ticket sales for foreign exchange allocation.

“The aviation sector is no longer a drain; it is gradually becoming a revenue earner. Keyamo’s reforms are creating jobs, boosting tourism and stimulating economic activities,” he said.

On the economic front, Agbese said the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning under Senator Atiku Bagudu has redefined Nigeria’s approach to fiscal discipline and strategic development.

He commended Bagudu for what he described as bold and strategic leadership in repositioning the country’s economic planning architecture.

“Senator Bagudu has brought competence, clarity and accountability into economic governance. His achievements in the last two years are too glaring to be ignored, even by critics. The budgeting process has never been this efficient or responsive to national priorities,” he said.

Agbese praised the development of the Eyemark app, an innovation of the Ministry designed to enable Nigerians monitor federal projects in their communities and provide real-time feedback.

“This innovation alone is a game changer in public project monitoring and citizen engagement,” he added.

He also commended Bagudu for revising the National Development Plan (2021–2025) to align with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that the plan reflects the administration’s eight key priorities.

“That plan incorporates the President’s eight priorities. It is a testament to the Minister’s commitment to ensuring that public spending aligns with strategic national goals,” Agbese said.

On poverty reduction, Agbese noted that Bagudu’s leadership of the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy has produced visible results.

“He coordinated interventions that led to the creation of over 67,000 jobs in just one year, disbursed more than 438 billion naira to states, and ensured the proper deployment of a 750 million dollar credit facility. These are not just numbers; they represent livelihoods lifted and families supported.”

He credited the Minister with promoting grassroots planning through joint sessions with state governments, initiating nutrition-sensitive governance reforms and institutionalising transparency by publishing a Performance Report of the Nigerian Economy.

While acknowledging ongoing challenges such as funding limitations and coordination among economic agencies, Agbese said Bagudu has remained focused and pragmatic.

He urged Nigerians to support the ongoing economic reforms, dismissing recent criticisms from opposition figures as politically motivated and disconnected from current realities.

“Even the fiercest critics can no longer deny the direction this government is headed. The reforms are bold, the outcomes are tangible and the momentum is strong,” Agbese said.

He called on Nigerians to give the administration time to consolidate the gains already made.

“The foundation is being laid. These changes take time, but the results are beginning to show. If we stay the course, Nigeria will be better off for it,” he said.

  • Reps ‘ll prioritise Nigerians’ interest in increasing 2025 budget to N54.2trn – Agbese

Reps ‘ll prioritise Nigerians’ interest in increasing 2025 budget to N54.2trn – Agbese

The House of Representatives has pledged to prioritise the interest of all Nigerians in increasing the 2025 budget from N49.7 trillion to N54.2 trillion.

According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Deputy Spokesperson for the house, Rep. Philip Agbese (APC-Benue), said this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Friday.

NAN reports that President Bola Tinubu had, in December 2024, presented the 2025 budget of 49.7 trillion to the joint sitting of the National Assembly for consideration.

However, in a letter addressed to both chambers of the national assembly on Wednesday, the president requested that the budget be increased to N54.2 trillion.

Agbese said that the House was in support of the proposal to increase the 2025 budget, stating that the development was driven by additional revenue from key government agencies.

He said that in scrutinising the budget, the house would be guided by its commitment to ensuring that every naira allocated was utilised in the best interest of the common man.

According to him, this bold move, driven by additional revenue from key government agencies, demonstrates the Tinubu-led administration’s commitment to revitalising the economy and improving the lives of Nigerians.

He assured Nigerians that the house would go the whole distance to ensure the implementation of a value-for-money budget in the 2025 fiscal year.

“As we begin our scrutiny of the proposal, we will continue to be guided by our commitment to ensuring that every naira is allocated efficiently, effectively and in the best interests of Nigerians.

“As we delve into the details of the proposal, we are particularly encouraged by the focus on strategic sectors, such as agriculture, which will receive a significant boost through the injection of funds into the Bank of Agriculture.

“This initiative has the potential to empower our farmers, stimulate rural development and enhance food security.

“We also noted the proposal’s emphasis on enhancing national security, particularly the construction of barracks for our troops. This investment in our military’s welfare and infrastructure attests to the administration’s dedication to protecting our nation and its citizens,” he stated.

Agbese said that both chambers of the national assembly would debate the budget estimates in the weeks ahead, preparatory to its passage before the end of the month.

Agbese dismisses threat of recall, calls for apology over Alia’s protrait

Chief Philip Agbese, the member representing Ado/ Okpokwu/ Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, said he has no regrets taking down the portrait of Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia from his office in the National Assembly.

The Deputy spokesman of the House of Representatives also laughed off threats of his possible recall and ultimatum to apologise to the Governor by those he described as political surrogates and charlatans.

He spoke in a statement signed by his Legislative Aide on Constituency Media Affairs, Lawrence Oduh.

While admitting that he has nothing personal against Governor Alia, the federal lawmaker said he is on the side of justice, equity and the rule of law.

Admitting that he may have been misunderstood, Agbese said in practical democracies, government officials like himself, are held accountable for their actions, especially when they go against the laws of the land.

He, however, said those masquerading as party stakeholders, political analysts and civil society groups making threats towards him and his esteemed office are nothing but political jobbers and hucksters.

Instead of advising the Governor to do the right thing, Agbese said they have taken their usual greedy path to create chaos and in return feed their bellies with peanuts that won’t sustain them beyond the Yuletide.

He said he is not moved by their calls, adding that he will continue to engage Governor Alia and other leaders across the country to deliver on the dividends of democracy.

Agbese said he would not hesitate to drag the Governor again should there be further neglect of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The lawmaker dared his trouncers to initiate the process and see between him and Governor Alia who would go down first.

The Deputy spokesman said his true constituents are totally in support of him and it is just a matter of time before they will reap the dividends.

The statement reads: “The attention of the office of the honorable member representing Ado/ Okpokwu/ Ogbadibo Federal Constituency has been drawn to the threats and ultimatum by some political surrogates and charlatans. Chief Philip Agbese’s first reaction to this misadventure was a deep laugh,” Oduh said.

“Agbese is a fearless man who believes in the principle of justice, equity, and fairness. He is also guided by the rule of law and no section of the Constitution said he was wrong to take down the portrait of the governor. In the first place, it is his office.

“Instead of the political jobbers to address the main issues raised by Agbese, they have taken their usual path to issue baseless threats to the federal lawmaker who was overwhelmingly voted by his people. Game on!

“Agbese enjoys the support of his constituents and he is well on track to deliver the dividends of democracy. For the records, the Enone Servant has sponsored the most bills for a first-timer and has lined up some interventions that will be implemented in the coming days.

“Agbese will continue to engage the governor and other leaders across the country. As a lawyer, social crusader, and human rights activist, he will be the first to drag them when they go off the rails. He is not worried about some disgruntled elements looking for their daily bread. Bread is expensive these days, you know.

“He has dared them to begin the process of his recall. Need not remind them that more governors have been impeached than federal or state lawmakers being recalled since 1999. Let’s see who will go down first”.
