    • Shettima: State pivotal for food, energy security

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged a stronger development partnership with Taraba State following the formal entry of Governor Agbu Kefas and his supporters into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The assurance was conveyed yesterday by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented the President at a grand reception in Jalingo to receive Governor Kefas into the ruling party.

Shettima said President Tinubu had instructed him to reassure the Taraba governor of his full place in the party and of a continuing relationship focused on accelerating development in the state.

In a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima described Taraba as strategic to Nigeria’s food and energy security.

“What makes us different from other political parties is that we believe that nations endure when they learn to recognise their quiet strengths. We believe that Taraba is one of such strengths.

“It is a land that feeds, powers, and steadies the nation without demanding applause,” the Vice President said.

Conveying the President’s message, Shettima added: “My dear brother, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has asked me to assure you of your place not only in the party, but in our continuing relationship to prioritise the development of our people.

“He has demonstrated that no region is expendable. No state is ornamental.”

He said the occasion was not about discovering Taraba’s relevance but acknowledging its long-established role in national cohesion and stability, noting that the APC was conceived as a unifying platform to bring Nigeria’s diverse regions together around a shared national purpose.

According to him, Taraba’s entry into the ruling party strengthens that convergence strategically, politically and economically, given its endowments.

“Taraba sits where food security meets energy security, where fertile land meets flowing water, where mineral wealth meets industrial possibility,” he said.

Welcoming Governor Kefas, Shettima said the decision reflected an understanding of governance as partnership rather than isolation, adding that the APC grows “by conviction, not compulsion; by inclusion, not exclusion; by performance, not noise.”

Also speaking, the Senate President, represented by Deputy Senate President Senator Jibrin Barau, congratulated Governor Kefas, describing the move as a decision that would enhance agriculture, infrastructure and the economy of Taraba State.

He said the National Assembly was fully supportive.

The National Chairman of the APC, Nentawe Yilwatda, thanked Governor Kefas for joining the party, saying alignment with the centre would help fast-track development and prosperity in the state.

“The best thing is to align with the centre so that all the good things and policies happening at that level will come to Taraba State,” he noted.

In his remarks, Governor Kefas said his decision was driven by purpose rather than politics, stressing that it was taken in the interest of youth, infrastructure, elders and the overall progress of Taraba State.

He said the state needed to align with the centre to benefit fully from federal policies and programmes.

Ekiti State governor, Biodun Oyebanji, who represented the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, said the defection would help attract dividends of democracy to Taraba.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of the APC flag to Governor Kefas, formally recognising him as the leader of the party in the state.

Kefas launches APC e-registration, says party moving forward

Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has flagged off the APC e-registration and revalidation exercise for the northern and central zones of the state.

He also said the All Progressives Congress (APC) is moving forward with renewed commitment, describing the party as being on a path of “revalidation and renewal”.

Speaking during the exercise on Friday at the Jolly Nyame Stadium Jalingo, the governor said the exercise was aimed at ensuring that no genuine member of the party is deprived of participating in any party activity.

He emphasised that the e-registration and revalidation process is very important for all party members, noting that the APC remains supreme above individual interests.

He reaffirmed his full support and backing for the party chairman to ensure the smooth conduct of the exercise without any hindrance.

According to the governor, he would be receiving daily updates on the registration process directly on his phone.

Kefas called on youths and women to cooperate fully and ensure that everyone is given the opportunity to register.

He warned that upcoming party activities, including congresses, would only be open to members who have successfully registered or revalidated their membership, stressing that participation would not be possible without compliance.

In his welcome address, the APC State Chairman, Barrister Ibrahim Tukur El-Sudi, said the importance of the e-registration exercise could not be overemphasised.

He explained that the exercise would provide accurate data on party members eligible to participate in party activities and elections.

El-Sudi commended Governor Kefas for responding promptly to the needs of the party, noting that the governor ensured the provision of all necessary equipment across the state to guarantee the success of the exercise.

According to him, the e-registration initiative is a strategic pillar for the future success of the APC, as it will strengthen and improve the party’s membership database.

The Coordinators of the e-registration exercise for the northern zone, Kamalludeen Adamu, and his central zone counterpart disclosed that personnel had been adequately trained to handle the process.

They confirmed that the exercise was already ongoing and urged party members across the state to come out en masse and participate.

“Already, as you are aware, a decision has been made. I have written a letter to the concerned leadership of the party. All programmes had been set for our movement to the APC on November 19. But in solidarity with national issues, especially the abduction of school children in Kebbi and other places, we decided to suspend it for the future.

“However, this is one of the processes that we need to embark on. Even if we have done the ceremony, we will still do this while we await a new date for the ceremony.

“It is necessary and expedient that we do the registration with the party to give us a new identity that we deserve, so we can take charge and put the party straight forward.

“I want to thank all of you for being a part of the occasion. A new date for the official movement will be announced in the near future.

“I want to assure you that we will continue to build Taraba together. I want you to sustain what you have started in the party so that Taraba State will enjoy the dividends of democracy,” Kefas said.

Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, on Wednesday postponed indefinitely his planned defection ceremony from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Dr Kefas said his decision was in solidarity for the kidnapped Kebbi students, declaring prayers for them.

Kefas, who was at the Taraba House of Assembly to present the 2025 budget, took time to pray for the abducted girls before the presentation.

“In light of the deeply troubling incident of the kidnapping of innocent school girls in Kebbi State, I have taken the solemn decision to postpone my scheduled declaration and movement to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“At a moment when our nation is once again confronted with the painful reality of insecurity, solidarity and compassion must rise above politics.

“The safety of our children — the most vulnerable and precious members of our society — is far more important than any political activity or ceremony.

It had been abandoned for many years.

Artimas who is in the Publicity Committee of the event, also said  the state is prepared to welcome either the President or the Vice President to the state and that citizens from the 16 Local Government Areas have been mobilised to participate in the event.

“Committees have been set up and they have been working. In fact, if you go round Jalingo, you will see billboards being erected in respect of this grand ceremony that would witness the coming of either the president or the vice president,” he said.

“We were also told that the governor has already sent emissaries all over the state to inform his own supporters and others and they have given him the go ahead to defect to APC. So everything is underway.”

Governor Kefas is the fourth governor elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to switch to the APC this year alone.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Dr.Ifeanyi Okowa, members of the state executive council, federal and state legislators as well as other PDP chieftains joined the APC in April, while  Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno followed in June.

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah switched to the APC last month.

Kefas confirmed last month that he had met with President Bola Tinubu and received his approval to defect from the PDP to  the APC.

According to him,the President subsequently  handed him over to the APC national chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda.

Meanwhile, President Ahmed Bola Tinubu has been assured of landslide victory in 2027.

The assurance was given by the Senate President Godswill Akpabio after receiving the decampees during a rally held at Polo Field, Jos, Plateau state.

According to the Senate President, “I came to Jos to see it with my eyes the caliber of personalities said to be ready to decamp to APC. And now I am a witness to it, that indeed, APC has taken over Plateau State.

“And so I want to assure Mr President that with what I saw in Jos today, you are going for landslide victory in your election come 2027.

“I saw a former state chairman of APC who left for PDP is back home to APC. I saw my colleague Senator I D Gyang among the new APC faces. I saw the entire structure of the Labor Party in Plateau state collapsed into APC. As a matter of fact, key figures of PDP are now in APC.

“Mr President, I can assure you did not made a mistake in giving the national leadership of APC to Prof, he is a bulldozer, every notable politician in Plateau State is running into APC since Nentawe came in.

“Therefore, be rest assured that Plateau is now APC and APC has become the party of Plateau people.”

In his remarks the Speaker House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas who was represented by Kalu Benjamin said, “we from Plateau State stand together to receive all those who want to work with Mr. President and with the APC in taking Nigeria from where we are to where we ought to be.

When we made the decision to choose a National Chairman from Plateau State, we made the right choice. And today, if you look around, you can see that within a few days of him assuming office, things are already turning around for the good of Plateau State.

“In just a short time, many people are leaving the train that is not moving and joining the train that will take Nigeria to the promised land. I want to thank you, and I want to pledge — on behalf of the Speaker, my boss and principal, and the leadership of the National Assembly, including the Senate — that we will stand by you. We will work with you to ensure that the dreams of our party for Plateau State are achieved”.

In his goodwill remarks, the governor of Nasarawa State Engnr Sule described APC as the biblical Noah’s Ark, saying, “everyone across the country must run into the party before it is too late”. He commended the decampees for taking the bold steps.

National chairman of APC Prof Nentawe Yilwatda who was visibly elated receiving the decampees said, “What we are doing today is very simple, because Mr. President has made it simple. He has given clear direction, and my duty is only to make it even easier.

“We are here to receive those “who have moved from the Labour Party to the APC  National Assembly members, House of Assembly members, and leaders who have left the Labour Party to join us. We are also receiving former PDP members from every corner of the state,  former National Assembly members, former House of Assembly members  all of whom have decided to return to the APC.

I am proud to say we have enough manpower, enough firepower, enough energy, and enough resolve to win the Central Zone, the Southern Zone, and the Northern Zone and to win decisively.

“Tomorrow, we continue the movement. And on behalf of the APC in Plateau State and the National Working Committee, I want to make it clear: in 2027, Plateau is firmly an APC state. Pressure mounts on Kefas to dump PDP for APC

A coalition of youths in Taraba has urged Governor Agbu Kefas to defect from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), to align the state with the centre. Correspondent VICTOR GAI reports

Pressure is mounting on Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). A coalition of youths across the state has intensified calls for him to align with the Federal Government. The group said Taraba stands to benefit greatly if the governor defects to the party at the centre.

According to the youths, the move would open the door for more development opportunities, federal appointments, and infrastructural projects, which they say have eluded the state for years due to political isolation.

Speaking in Jalingo, the state capital, the coalition’s spokesperson said it was time for Taraba to “align with the centre” to attract the dividends of democracy.

“If Governor Kefas joins the All Progressives Congress (APC), Taraba will gain direct access to federal projects, resources, and opportunities that our people, especially the youth, desperately need,” the group stated.

They maintained that their demand was not about partisan politics but about securing a better future for the people of the state.

“We, the youth of Taraba State, are united in this call. We want development, not division. We want bridges that connect us, not politics that separate us. We want roads, power, jobs, and opportunities that secure our future,” they added.

The group further praised Governor Kefas for his leadership style and described him as “a man of courage and vision,” noting that his political future would be better served if he aligned with the APC.

“Governor Kefas has already shown that he is a man of courage and vision. We urge him to make history by aligning with the centre, so Taraba can rise and take its rightful place in Nigeria’s progress,” the statement read.

The call comes amid growing speculation in political circles that the governor, who was elected on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), may be considering a switch to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, the rumours have triggered mixed reactions across the state’s political spectrum, with some stakeholders viewing the development as a strategic move for survival, while others dismiss it as an unnecessary political distraction.

Reacting to the growing speculation, an APC chieftain and former governorship aspirant, Chief David Sabo Kente, has denied claims that he was paving the way for Governor Kefas to join the ruling party.

Kente, who hails from Wukari Local Government Area — the same hometown as Governor Kefas — said he had no prior knowledge of any plan by the governor to defect, insisting that such talk remained in the realm of speculation.

“I want to put it on record that I am a loyal member of the APC and I have been sincere since I joined the party,” Kente said. “I know that I played a key role towards the emergence of my younger brother, Agbu Kefas, as governor of the state in 2023, and I have paid a very high price for that because I am excluded from the government completely.”

Kente explained that while he had once stated he would not contest the 2027 governorship election in solidarity with Governor Kefas, recent pressure from supporters across the state had forced him to reconsider his stance.

“I also said a few weeks ago that I wouldn’t contest against him in 2027, except if that became the overwhelming position of the people of Taraba State. Since then, I have been overwhelmed with calls from individuals and groups urging me to contest the forthcoming election at all costs,” he revealed.

“Most of them have even volunteered to buy my form. As a result, I have had to shift grounds, and today, I can tell you that consultations are high and I may be contesting the election after all.”

He dismissed insinuations that his renewed political ambition was a calculated attempt to smooth the governor’s entry into the APC. “Let me clarify that as a critical stakeholder in the APC in Southern Taraba and from Wukari Local Government Area, where the governor comes from, he has not informed me of any decision to join the party,” Kente stated.

“I was surprised when people started accusing me of clearing the ground for his defection into the party. He did not and has not informed me of his intention to join the APC. For me, it is still in the realm of rumours.”

Kente, who is popularly known as DSK among his supporters, further stressed that the APC remains a broad-based political platform that welcomes all Nigerians willing to contribute to its growth.

“However, let me make it clear that the party is large enough to accommodate everyone. Whether the governor is coming as an asset or a liability is left for the party members to decide,” he said.

Political observers in Taraba say the latest development reflects growing tension and realignment in the build-up to the 2027 elections. Since taking office in 2023, Governor Kefas has enjoyed support across party lines, largely due to his calm disposition and focus on inclusive governance.

However, sources close to the state government say that the relationship between the PDP-led state administration and the APC-controlled federal government has at times been strained, particularly over access to federal projects and appointments.

Analysts believe that the calls for Kefas to join the APC may be part of a broader political strategy to position Taraba closer to the national power structure.

A political commentator in Jalingo, who preferred anonymity, said, “What you are seeing is part of the realignment process. The 2027 election is already taking shape, and everyone is positioning. The pressure on Kefas to join the APC is not surprising, especially considering the dominance of the party at the national level.”

Another analyst, however, cautioned that such a move could polarise the political space in Taraba and weaken the PDP, which has historically been the dominant party in the state.

“Defection is a double-edged sword,” the analyst noted. “While it might bring short-term access to federal resources, it could also alienate the governor from his political base and create new tensions within his administration.”

Governor Kefas has so far maintained silence on the matter. Though he has not publicly dismissed or confirmed the rumours, sources within the Government House in Jalingo told The Nation that the governor remains focused on governance and delivering on his campaign promises.

One senior aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “His Excellency is not distracted by political rumours. He is focused on his vision for Taraba — on education, security, and infrastructure. He believes performance is the best politics.”

Indeed, since assuming office, Governor Kefas has rolled out several initiatives targeting youth empowerment, education reform, and infrastructure development. His administration recently launched a free basic education policy and has been working to attract private investment into agriculture and tourism, two sectors seen as vital to the state’s growth.

Despite these strides, his government has faced challenges, including the lingering insecurity in parts of Southern Taraba and disputes over political appointments.

Observers believe that his next political move — whether to stay in the PDP or join the APC — will have far-reaching implications for the state’s political future.

The APC has continued to consolidate its influence across the North-East zone, with recent defections from opposition parties boosting its structure ahead of the next general elections.

In neighbouring states like Gombe and Bauchi, several PDP stalwarts have recently crossed over to the ruling party, citing the need to align with the centre for “developmental gains.”

Party insiders say the APC in Taraba is also positioning itself to attract new members, particularly influential figures who can strengthen its chances of capturing the state in 2027.

A senior party official in Jalingo, who does not want his name in print, said the APC was open to welcoming Governor Kefas if he chose to join, but insisted that such a decision must come from the governor himself.

“Our doors are open,” the official said. “But Governor Kefas must make that decision personally. The APC does not beg anyone to join — we only present a platform for progress.”

With barely two years before the next general elections, Taraba State appears to be at a political crossroads. The calls for Governor Kefas to defect have not only stirred debate about political loyalty and performance but also reignited old rivalries among key power blocs in the state.

While youth groups insist that “aligning with the centre” is the surest way to unlock development, others argue that political stability and continuity within the PDP are crucial for sustaining ongoing reforms.

For now, Governor Kefas remains publicly silent — a silence that many believe is both strategic and deliberate. Whether he stays in the PDP or makes a dramatic switch to the APC could reshape the political landscape of Taraba for years to come.

As one political elder in the state put it: “Whatever Kefas decides will determine who controls the future of Taraba politics. All eyes are on him.”

“We received a call from people of the area around 5pm yesterday about the incident and when we went there, we met the victim (Adamu)  with injuries all over his body. We were told that it was Bello Kasim who used a knife to inflict injuries on him.

“According to the security guard by name Tapawa, he caught Adamu in the water factory by 3am. We learnt he did not catch Adamu with anything but he tied the victim and beat him up before calling on his boss (Bello). On arrival, the boss pulled out a knife and began to stab Adamu,” Dauda narrated.

He added that his interaction with the victim showed he was mentally challenged as his responses were uncoordinated.

Dauda also said that the police had intervened to save the boy who is currently receiving treatment at the Police clinic in Jalingo.

“The police outpost at Karofi was alerted of the incident and so they rescued the victim and took him to a clinic at Karofi.

He added that at the Jalingo police Division, the victim was brought in a pool of his blood and was immediately rushed to the police clinic where he is currently receiving treatment.

A senior police officer attached to the Jalingo police Division told our reporter that the police invited Kasim and obtained his statement but released him on bail a few minutes later.

Efforts by our correspondent to reach the Spokesman of the Nigeria Police, Taraba State command, did not yield positive results, as all his phone were switched off as at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, when contacted on phone, Alhaji Bello Kasimu told our correspondent that he should be given time to enable him respond to the allegations against his person.

Kasimu subsequently refused to pick all phone calls put across to him by our correspondent afterwards.

The attack on Adamu has attracted widespread condemnation from residents of Karofi were Adamu roams around the streets in both day and nights.

Why I didn’t consult stakeholders on free education – Kefas

Taraba State governor, Agbu Kefas, has disclosed that his decision not to consult experts on his free education policy was deliberate, as he “didn’t want anybody to discourage” him.

He assured that the free education policy will succeed in spite of the widespread criticism on how he was going about the policy.

Speaking during the Town Hall meeting with stakeholders held at the newly built ultra-modern banquet hall, to mark his second year anniversary in Jalingo, on Thursday, Kefas also justified the reason he was embarking on the construction of 60 new schools while several existing schools needed attention.

He said: ‘I didn’t consult people on my free education policy because I didn’t want anybody to discourage me. I believe the free education is going to succeed. Some of the data we are having on schools are not accurate.

“We are going to build new structures to ensure security. All the existing structures are not to my taste. The 60 schools are pilot projects. We would replicate them in other schools”.

Responding to the issue of procurement of free uniforms, shoes and books for students, Kefas said he was aware of the need to contract local entrepreneurs to manufacture them but that they lack the capacity to do the job.

He stated: “I am aware that we have shoemakers, tailors. We will train our people and empower them for the future. For now, we are seeing how we would get it right”.

They include: Bills on free and compulsory education, 50% subsidy on tuition, free medical bill for children and the elderly and land access for farming.

The governor also revealed that a preliminary police report says his late sister died of severe gunshots and that investigation was still on and assured that justice will prevail.
