    Agege launches Measles-Rubella vaccination campaign

    Agege Local Government Chairman, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, yesterday, launched a measles-rubella vaccination campaign, emphasising the importance of protecting children against preventable diseases.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the launch was held at Sango PHC Maternity Centre,  Agege.

     Obasa urged parents to take advantage of the free vaccination exercise, targeting children aged 0-14 years, to reduce childhood illnesses in urban communities.

    “We are committed to strengthening primary healthcare and promoting disease prevention,” Obasa said, reaffirming the council’s partnership with healthcare professionals, traditional rulers, and community leaders.

    Traditional ruler of Igbáland, Oba Egbeyemi Oladimeji, who was present, stressed that immunisation is crucial for safeguarding public health and strengthening community trust.

    Vice Chairman, Orile-Agege LCDA, Wale Fayemi, commended the collaboration between government and health workers, noting that it ensured a smooth commencement of the exercise across Agege.

    Agege Local Government Medical Officer of Health, Dr Oluwafunmilayo Ayegbusi,  explained that vaccines are safe, effective, and available at all primary healthcare facilities and outreach points.

    Obasa presents N14.8b budget

    The Chairman of Agege Local Government, Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa, has proposed N14.88 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year.

    He described it as the Budget of Restoration, Innovation and Development.

    Obasa stated that the projected revenue would be largely driven by federal allocations amounting to N14.57 billion, comprising N2.08 billion from statutory allocation, N12.14 billion from Value Added Tax, and N355.29 million from other FAAC-related sources, while Internally Generated Revenue is expected to contribute N306.8 million.

    He explained that the proposed expenditure was equally balanced at N14.88 billion, with recurrent expenditure standing at N8.23 billion, covering personnel costs of N2.95 billion, pension obligations of N503.46 million, and overhead costs estimated at N4.77 billion, while capital expenditure was put at N6.65 billion.

    The chairman said the budget is anchored on three core pillars of restoration of public infrastructure, innovation in governance and service delivery, and sustainable, inclusive development aimed at improving the quality of life of residents across all seven wards of the local government.

    He noted that major priorities under the capital programme include road rehabilitation and construction, drainage expansion, street lighting, modernization of public facilities, school infrastructure upgrades, healthcare facility improvement, and environmental sanitation and beautification projects.

    Obasa further stressed that education, healthcare, infrastructure, environmental management, youths and women empowerment, and social welfare would remain the strategic sectors driving the implementation of the fiscal plan.

    Reflecting on the performance of the outgoing year, the council boss highlighted the construction and rehabilitation of key roads across Agege and Dopemu, extensive drainage works to tackle flooding, renovation of several public primary schools, establishment of a tech hub, e-library, and vocational centres, as well as landscaping projects across major roads.

    He also listed wide-ranging environmental and health interventions, including the employment of 300 street sweepers, acquisition of refuse compactors, community sanitation campaigns, provision of vaccine storage equipment, digital health tools, community health outreach, and health insurance for vulnerable pregnant women.

    The Acting Chairman of Agege Local Government, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, has launched the second phase of the council’s 50 per cent Discount Food Market, bringing relief to thousands of families struggling with the rising cost of living.

    The event, held at the Agege Township Stadium, drew a large crowd of residents, including parents, traders, and elderly citizens, who purchased essential food items at half their regular prices. Items sold included rice, beans, yam, semovita, palm oil, frozen foods, and other staples.

    Obasa said the initiative is a long-term social intervention aimed at reducing the economic burden on residents.

    He explained that the programme also supports local traders and producers by incorporating them into the supply chain. “This is a deliberate social reform. By involving our local entrepreneurs, we are building a self-sustaining community economy. Governance must be practical, inclusive, and compassionate,” he said.

    The second phase of the project featured more local food producers, some of whom described their participation as a major boost to their businesses. Community leaders and market women also praised the Acting Chairman for his efforts, calling the initiative a model of responsive leadership.

    Several beneficiaries shared emotional testimonies, including an elderly widow who said the discounted food items would enable her to feed her grandchildren properly for the first time in months. Observers and civil society representatives at the event commended the programme, describing it as an example of people-centered governance.
