  • Enyimba must fall in Agege, says MFM FC Coach

Lagos-based MFM FC head coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu on Saturday said that his team would not target anything short of victory against Enyimba International of Aba on Sunday.

He said that anything short of that would amount to failure ahead of this weekend’s game in the Match Day 13 of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Group A leaders will host seven-time NPFL champions of the top-flight at the Soccer Temple, Agege Stadium.

“Enyimba’s game is very important to us you know, we have yet to beat them before in our home and away games.

“It’s a game we must win to remain at the top. We know their antics, we know their strength and we know everything about Enyimba FC. I can tell you their possible line-up.

“Our former players, Austine Oladapo, Abdulrahman Bashir, Thomas Zenke, Onuwa Chukwuka and Stanley Okorom may likely start for them, but we have prepared. So, anything less than three points is failure.

“We have prepared for the game and we are waiting for them, he said in a statement by the club’s Media Officer, Olawale Quadri.

In spite the visitors impressive unbeaten streak in recent matches this season; Ilechukwu believes his charges will at the end of the match put the Aba-based team to the sword.

“I am aware that Enyimba is a technical side and also of their unbeaten run. We are number one on the log on merit and we are no push over, so come Sunday Enyimba must fall,’’ he said.

  • ‘Why we chose Agege Stadium for continental matches’

‘Why we chose Agege Stadium for continental matches’

The Director of MFM FC of Lagos, Emmanuel Adeyemi on Monday said that the club chose to play its continental matches at Agege Stadium because it has a “fortress” of fans  no team will survive.

Adeyemi said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that though the club could play its matches anywhere in Lagos, it remained in Agege to maintain its affinity with their supporters.

“MFM FC can play anywhere in Lagos, it’s just that this is our home ground and this is where we have our fans and we are also used to the facility here.

“Agege fans have been of great support to the team, we want them to enjoy our playing in the continent here, but that does not mean we cannot play anywhere else.

“We are thankful to the Lagos State government for their tremendous support in making this place ready. The support has been so great; Agege remains a fortress,’’ he said.

Adeyemi expressed optimism that CAF would certify the stadium for the continental campaign.

“ I am confident that Agege will get CAF’s approval for our continental campaign, the Lagos State government has committed large sum for its remodelling.

“ With the kind of passion shown to MFM by Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, we are left with little to do, just to get our players ready.

“For this competition, we are not only representing Lagos State, but we will be flying the national flag.

“The state government has done everything possible in making sure that Agege Stadium gets CAF approval by December, and we will take it up from there,” he said.

Adeyemi told NAN that the team would begin close camping as soon as it completes ongoing recruitment of new players.

“Immediately after we must have done with getting new signings, we will go into closed camping. The coaches and the technical crew have submitted their list and we are looking into it.

“We will strengthen all the departments from defence to the midfield and strikers; we want to add to our pool of talented players.

“For us in MFM, we believe in excellence and we want to effectively represent Lagos and Nigeria at the CAF Champions League, so all hands are on deck.

“We aim to make MFM the toast of many as far as football club is concerned.

“So we are ready to surpass the targets of people with the level of support we have received from the Lagos State Governor,’’the director added.

In the same vein, Sola Coker, a board member of the Lagos State Football Association, (LSFA) said that MFM would get all the support needed from the body.

“We are ready to support MFM to any length. We are happy that Lagos is back on the continent after 16 years in the doldrums.

“We are glad that Ambode gave his support for Agege Stadium to meet CAF’s standard, it’s such a huge investment and a positive development.

“We have worked hard for this since about six years ago during the emergence of MFM till now and we can only hope for the better,’’ the LSFA board member said

Agege Stadium is 60% Ready, says LASG

Lagos State Government on Wednesday said on-going works at Agege Township Stadium shall be completed, ahead of  Confederation of African Football(CAF) inspection in December for the 2017/2018 Champions League.

“ Ambode has said that all hands must be on deck to support MFM FC.

“We need to upgrade the stadium because we will be hosting CAF competitions.

“The stadium is about 60 per cent ready, and all the necessary adjustment would have been made before the CAF inspection by December; it is an achievable target to get the facility ready.

“What the Lagos State Sports Commission will do is to ensure that all the necessary structures are put in place for MFM FC to have a pass mark for the stadium,’’ he said.

Yusuf said that the upgrade of the stadium was in line with the government’s policy of providing standard sports facilities to drive the state economy.

“The remodeling is part of the state government’s policy of providing excellent facilities across the state.

“Government has committed huge sums of money, which we cannot have the full estimate now, for the upgrade because there are many facilities that will be added to it.

“Some of it will be remodeling of the VIP stands, construction of new players’ dressing room, referees’ room, conveniences and sick bay; many more facilities will be added to the stadium.

“By the time work is done, we will see a stadium that will pass the CAF inspection,’’ he said.

The Director of MFM FC, Emmanuel Adeyemi, thanked the government for immense support.

“We will like to thank Lagos State Government for tremendous support.

“It has given us all the necessary things we needed; ours is to go there and justify the investment on us.

“We will ensure a good outing in our continental campaign to make Lagos the dream of others in continental football,’’ he said.

  • Phasing out Danfo buses will create more jobs – Ambode

Phasing out Danfo buses will create more jobs – Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday allayed fears that plans by his administration to phase out the yellow commercial buses, popularly known as Danfo would lead to massive job losses, saying that it would instead create more jobs in the transportation sector.

The Governor, who spoke at the May Day Rally held at the Agege Stadium to commemorate the 2017 Workers Day Celebration, said the Bus Reform Initiative, aimed at introducing over 5000 air-conditioned buses to replace the Danfo buses would open new vista of opportunities, while also redefining the means of road transportation in the State.

Responding to the fears raised by the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos Council, Comrade Idowu Adelakun and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Comrade Francis Ogunremi on the implications of the initiative to drivers, conductors, mechanics and other artisans, Governor Ambode assured that it would benefit all Lagosians on the long run.

He said: “If Lagos is to be globally competitive, we need to change the outlook of the way the city runs. What is of paramount interest to this government is to make sure that every Lagosian has a comfortable means of moving from one point to the other. But I promise you there will be no job losses.

“The Governor is not interested in driving all the new buses. It is the same bus drivers, the technicians, the mechanics that will also still be employed and trained to use these new buses. Instead of job losses, we are going to employ more people for the greater number of the buses and it will make the city more beautiful and more comfortable for all our workers.”

Governor Ambode, who also addressed the request of the labour leaders on workers’ welfare, assured that as the State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) continues to increase, his administration would work out modalities to improve the welfare of workers in line with his mantra of all-inclusive governance.

The Governor said that his administration was ready to look into the plight of pensioners as regards the pace of paying pension, assuring that the process would be fast tracked immediately.

“Just like we have said, we have provided vehicles for the unions but again it has not gone round and it has also not gone round to the private sector unions, we will complete the whole scheme before the end of the year,” he said.

The Governor said as part of the celebration of 50 years of the State, his administration would provide a befitting State Secretariat for the NLC, while government would also work on local and international training for labour leaders to make them relevant to the growth of the economy.

Governor Ambode also assured that the officers of the State Public Service, who according to him, are the real drivers of the development in the State, would continue to be equipped with the necessary competencies and skills in order to deliver effective and efficient service to the people.

Commending the choice of this year’s May Day celebration themed, “Labour Relations in Economic Recession: An Appraisal,” the Governor said the leadership of Labour unions had demonstrated a responsible sense of stakeholding in the joint enterprise to improve the society and leave lasting legacies for the generations to come through the creation of sustainable wealth and value.

Besides, the Governor enjoined the organised labour to continue to show understanding, while rightly insisting on the due and just entitlements of their members, saying that any industrial unrest will compound the challenges of economic recession.

“I wish to commend the example of Lagos State to the entire nation in respect of industrial harmony. In Lagos State, both the government and organised labour believe that negotiations are more democratic and effective than unilateral impositions by the government or unilateral demands by the workers,” he said.

While alluding to the fact that his administration would not have been able to fulfill the electoral promises without the support of the “most versatile, resilient and innovative Public Service in the nation”, he noted that the immense contributions of all workers in the private sector was also chiefly responsible for the pride of place that Lagos occupies in our nation, in Africa and in the world at large.

Earlier, Comrades Adelakun and Ogunremi commended Governor Ambode for his commitment to workers’ welfare and the determination with which he had been transforming the State, describing the Governor as an accomplished accounting professional, creative intellectual, skilled planner and focused implementor.

The May Day Rally featured March pasts from various Labour Unions, Trade Organisations and its Affiliates who trooped out enmasse despite the heavy downpour and were excited to see the Governor celebrate the day with them.

  • LMC lifts ban on Agege Stadium

LMC lifts ban on Agege Stadium

The League Management Company (LMC) on Friday lifted its three closed door match ban on Agege Stadium.

LMC’s Special Projects Manager Harry Iwuala made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

NAN reports that LMC had ordered MFM to play three home matches behind closed doors and pay N4 million fine.

The punishment came as a result of fans encroachment on the field during MFM’s Match Day 23 fixtures against 3SC of Ibadan on the June 19.

MFM, however, has served the first closed door match punishment during its Match Day 27 fixtures against Heartland FC of Owerri which it won 2-0.

The Olukoya Boys were looking forward to play the next match against Plateau United in the Match Day 29 fixtures before they were granted pardon by LMC.

Commenting on the pardon, Iwuala said the league body rescinded the duration of the ban based on existing laws guiding the body.

“We have the prerogative based on the provision of the laws guiding the conduct of the league to reduce the ban.

“The laws states that the ban will be served based on the conduct of the club and fans and this window allows for the reduction of the ban,’’ he said.

MFM spokesman Olawale Quadri said that the club was happy with the development.

“We are happy with this because we have missed our fans so much and we will be happy to have them back on the stands.

“We want them to enjoy our matches and we promise not to disappoint them.

“The Chairman of the club, Godwin Enakahena, has urged the fans to come out with the same passion which they have showed in the past by cheering the team to victory.

“The next match against Plateau United is a crucial one and we want to claim the three points at stake,’’ he said.

Reacting to the ban reduction, a fan of MFM, Rotimi Arabi also said that the suspension was a welcome development for the club.

“This comes good for the club; MFM is known to be a non-violent club and will not indulge in any violence whatsoever.

“LMC has done what is right in the first instance by being an
impartial judge when it comes to dispensing justice on infractions.

“The reduction of the ban will allow the club to concentrate more on the match with its fans on the stands to cheer,’’ he said.
