  • Transfer Rumours: Agu comfortable at Setubal

Super Eagles midfielder, Mikel Agu has disclosed that he still remains committed to Portuguese club, Vitoria Setubal despite speculations linking him with a move away from the club, AOIFootball.com reports.

The on-loan Porto player was recalled for Nigeria’s upcoming clashes against South Africa and Uganda and he told AOIFootball.com exclusively he will honour his contract with the modest Portuguese outfit.

“Transfers and speculations are always part of the game; a few months ago when I left Turkey there where different stories of where I would play my football, but now I’m here in Setubal and enjoying my football again.

“So for me, I’m happy here and want to focus on the game itself and not the other part of it. So Setubal remains my focus for now,” Agu said.

However, AOIFootball.com can authoritatively confirm that the Nigerian is being tracked by some clubs in the French Ligue 1 but it’s very unlikely that he will be ending his loan deal with Setubal despite the winter transfer window less than two months away.

Agu, 25, has featured in 7 matches this season for Setubal since joining on transfer deadline day, averaging a game rating of 6.78, completing 76% of his passes, 100% of his dribbles and winning 73%, 51% of his tackles and duels contested.

CARL IKEME IS THE BEST NIGERIAN GOALKEEPER FOR NOW – AGU

The Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Alloy Agu has defended the invitation of Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme as the best for the Super Eagles.

Though not a regular player in his club, Agu said his response and excellent outing at the National team would make his coach at Wolverhampton take another look at him and as well as other clubs outside England.

“Ikeme is good and the best for now. Even in his club he may not be commanding a regular shirt but I tell you he is good. You have equally watched him in goal for the Super Eagles,” Agu said.

The former Eagles goalkeeper said a good goalkeeper must know when to grab an opportunity which Ikeme did when he was fielded.

“Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Dele Alampasu are good goalkeepers. These three goalkeepers are the best for Nigeria. I submitted their names because I have seen them and also believe in them,” he added.

  • Akpeyi still part of Eagles, says Agu

Nigeria goalkeeping coach Alloy Agu has stated that new Chippa United custodian Daniel Akpeyi still remains in the plans of the Super Eagles despite a change of guard.

Agu said Akpeyi is one of the goalkeepers  selected for the Nigerian men’s national team but was left out of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match with Tanzania to allow him settle down at his new club in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL).

“Akpeyi is one of the goalkeepers I have monitored in the league while he was with Warri Wolves, and even his performances in the friendly match (against South Africa) recently showed that he is one of our best and I believe that is why the club in South Africa signed him up.

“Like most of the players who were not invited for this game, Akpeyi is very much in our plans as we believe he can also provide competition in the goalkeeping department of the team. For now, we thought it best for him to settle down at his new team and then we can monitor his progress as well,” Agu told supersport.com.

He explained that Ikeme has been putting out impressive displays with Wolves in the English Championship, where he has made two appearances in their five league matches.

“Carl is a decent goalkeeper. He is among the most respected goalkeepers in England and he will certainly be a good addition to the team. As for Ikechukwu, he has spent a week with us and I can say he is one of the best in the league right now and certainly his future remains bright provided he keeps working hard to stay in good shape,” said Agu.

Agu: I didn’t celebrate Pillars’ fall

Super Eagles’ goalkeeper coach, Alloy Agu has denied reports that claimed that he celebrated Kano Pillars’ loss at home to Nasarawa United in GloNPFL matchday 25 game played in Kano on Sunday.

Defending champions Kano Pillars lost a 12-year unbeaten streak in the Nigerian League to Nasarawa United last Sunday, drawing global attention and sundry reactions from every quarter.

“As a Christian, I don’t celebrate people’s fall. I celebrate victories,” Agu opened up.

“We must appreciate what Kano Pillars have been able to achieve at home in the last 12 years but we must also know that records are meant to be created and broken. I congratulate Pillars for that record they created and also want to celebrate the victory of Nasarawa United for that away victory. Results like this will help our league to grow. They are good for our football,” Agu added.

The former Nigerian International would then go on to commend all those who have made sacrifices that are now producing these positive changes in our league.

“The NFF, LMC, referees and the fans need to be commended for all the positive changes we are witnessing in the league. The clubs, coaches, players and media should also not be left out. We must not rest on our oars just yet because we must keep moving forward and never stop,” he concluded.

Home-based Eagles will open Uyo Stadium

Nigeria Super Eagles made up of entirely domestic league players will play a friendly in Uyo to formally open the new Akwa Ibom Stadium on November 6.

Officials of the Nigeria Football Federation disclosed in Abuja that the friendly, which is to be bankrolled by the Akwa Ibom State Government, will see the Eagles play a North African team that will be confirmed this week.

Coach Amodu Shaibu is already planning to use the opportunity of this international friendly to begin preparations for Nigeria’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign in November.

“Twenty two players will be called up to camp in Uyo from Sunday, November 2, ahead of the friendly and that game will afford us a wonderful opportunity to see some of our best legs in the domestic league more closely,”Shaibu opened up.

“We will have the opportunity of working with them for about three days before the friendly. Some of those who show the quality we are looking for will then join the main squad for the qualifiers.

“We must seize every opportunity we have to get a strong squad ready for the challenges ahead and we really appreciate the Akwa Ibom State Government as well as the Nigeria Football Federation for putting this programme together.”

The new 30,000-capacity Akwa Ibom Stadium in Uyo is also expected to host Nigeria’s final 2015 AFCON qualifier against South Africa on November 19.

  • Agu, spiritual head of Lakyo

    Agu, spiritual head of Lakyo

His appearance did not strike any fear. Yet the man sitting comfortably on a three-seater in front of reporters has a larger than life image.

Ala Agu, the Spiritual Head of the Lakyo Community (not Alakyo), where 56 security operatives were killed, looked like any other villager. His beards were trimmed short and snow-white. His eyes looked closed as if he was asleep.

He told reporters that he had no hand in the killing of the security men who were said to have been ambushed on their way from Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, to Lakyo to arrest him.

Baba Lakyo’s mud house has a tiny gate.

He wore three rings on his left hand’s fingers and did not betray any fear, despite his being declared wanted by the police.

A few metres from his house were about eight burnt vehicles – the signs of the May 7 security mission that ended in a fiasco.

The village has few mud houses.

At the entrance of Lakyo community, residents welcomed visitors excitedly. They looked innocent, warm and calm.

There are few houses, most of which are of mud. It is mostly open farm land; no sign of government presence.

Lakyo lacks electricity, pipe-borne water and has only one primary school that belongs to United Baptist Church.
