  • With relevant books, Agunbiade calls for inclusive education for children

Ima-Mariam Nike Agunbiade is not just a writer, a creative artiste, legal practitioner and educationist, her ideals at the moment is using a new method of inclusive education with the relevant books and documents to enhance the learning and education process of children, Edozie Udeze writes

Ima-Mariam Nike Agunbiade is no doubt a woman of many ideas.  Apart from being an artiste, a prolific writer, legal practitioner and educationist, she has chosen to use her God-given talents to improve children in more ways than one.  With her HIIMA International Education Network located both here in Nigeria and in the United Kingdom, she has been able to reach out to children who are not so gifted or fortunate in their educational pursuits and careers.

Addressing reporters on the essence of HIIMA and what it stands for, Agunbiade who once organized and ran the Miss Tourism Pageant in Nigeria, said, “In the first place, HIIMA stands for high love.  Essentially carved out of an Efik word the essence is to use the network to empower individuals who are prepared to help students to learn as a career and to develop such careers in education. In essence, HIIMA aims also to teach education with love and respect.  This will help them equally to unleash their potential for greater heights so as to make positive difference and impact in the wider society”.

A renowned creative artiste and committed educationist, Agunbiade took her time to research into what she termed “a child with Special Educational Needs(SEN).  It is a special way of educating such children and the role the government needs to play to ensure that this approach is not only made plausible but attainable and achievable.  “Yes, a child has a special need if he or she has disabilities that make it difficult or near impossible for her to perform tasks children of her age can perform”, she noted.

Calling on governments at all levels to practice or be part of this whole essence of inclusive education to give equal rights to all children, Agunbiade who also runs the Silversands International Schools, Lekki, said, “children indeed need special education.

This comes in when that child has significant learning difficulties that often make it more challenging for him to learn like others same age.  This process actually includes behavioral, social and emotional difficulties, sensory/physical needs, intellectual disabilities, medical or health conditions where a child needs serious attention to strengthen his or her life”.

As an artiste, who has written topical and relevant books to back up her research crusade. She drew attention to the United Kingdom where the government really comes in to help a kid who is found in this condition. “The Nigerian government has to emulate such example”, she noted.  For her those books are tailored towards this HIIMA methodological approach to inclusive education where no one is discriminated against or excluded due to one disability or the other.  “The government  here has to join in to practice this model.  Yes it can be expensive to do so, but that’s the only way to ensure that all children, all students attain their best in the world”, she insisted.

For now, Agunbiade whose book, Survival and the Role of Detachment, which made waves years back has been using her resources to teach teachers and willing instructors the tenets of HIIMA and the impactful nature of inclusive education.  Clearly, inclusive education is the panacea.  It is why HIIMA is a global concern inculcated to provide equal education that recognizes individual differences.  Having been in education for over twenty years, it is apparent that this method has been permissible and has been result-oriented.  “Yes it has been made possible using the child’s attributes and capacity to learn.  In this way, the application of the child’s absorbent mind and the sensitive periods become relevant to ensure the workability of this methodology”.

Insisting that if the teaching methods in Nigeria are based on these, a lot of children would soon be the greatest beneficiaries, Agunbiade who is also involved in writing motivational books on instructions and others, explained thus: “HIIMA seeks to build a network of career minded, caring individuals.  These are individuals wanting to choose the education sector as their life calling.  Therefore, HIIMA shows those various opportunities that can be tapped into which includes the education of members on how to operate successfully in this education sector to make a decent living or better career and acquire riches”.

To make HIIMA ideology and concept all encompassing and globally more relevant, the CEO is calling on more Nigerians to be involved in the espousal of this concept.  With abundance of books to explain this model and methodology, Agunbiade said that it is ideal for those involved to acquire the franchise.  This franchise is already modeled after the HIIMA high love approach.   “People can also get commissions when they bring in customers”,  she point out.  “All network members must work actively to give members per quarter minimum to maintain commission.  However, profit can only be made on volumes. Even then our early years franchise and learning support come with teaching methodology and learning sets”.  She however made it clear that the business aspects of HIIMA ideals is to empower more Nigerians economically.  “More teachers can key into this”, she observed.  “This is why this partnership is cogent; it is to enhance levels of Mathematics and English and then encourage children to captialise in the areas where they have comparative advantage”, she said, matter-of-factly.
