    Sokoto Govt flags off N4.7bn fertilizers distribution, lauds Tinubu

    Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto has praised President Bola Tinubu for considering a donation of 60 trucks of fertilizer to the state to enhance its agricultural activities as he flagged the distribution of over N4.7 billion worth of assorted fertilizers to farmers including women and youths farmers free in the state for the 2024 cropping season.

    The governor also announced plans to revive all irrigation sites in the state, including a proposal to spend N10 billion on the rehabilitation of Lugu Dam in Wurno Local Government Area to boost rice production.

    The fertilizer inputs are provided by the presidency, the Fadama NG-CARES Programme, in collaboration with the Sokoto state government, with the first consignment of 203 trucks supplied by local governments in partnership with the state government.

    Speaking at the distribution event in Dange town, the headquarters of Dange Shuni local government, Governor Aliyu Sokoto emphasised that the initiative aims to improve agricultural output during the 2024 cropping season and create job opportunities for the youth, especially at the grassroots level.

    According to him, the state will receive 10 trucks of fertilizer, 7 trucks would be released instantly for wet season farming while the remaining 3 trucks would subsequently be issued for dry season farming respectively.

    The governor disclosed that a total of 195 farmers community Associations (FCAs) consisting of 16,967 farmers across the 23 local government areas of the state were to benefit from the distribution of this year’s procured fertilizer free of charge under the state Fadama N-CARES programme.

    “Also, a total of 45,366 bags of NPK, 24,264 bags of Urea, 20,664 litres of Agro chemicals and 20,000kg of Rice each Sorghum and Millet seeds would be distributed to farmers across the state”, added the governor.

    He further stated that in an attempt to make them self-reliant, youth and women group farmers will receive 1000 water pumps, 23 multipurpose threshers, 3000 tomato grinding machines and 58 rice thresher machines at no cost.

    He called on all serving and retired civil servants, politicians, businessmen, teeming youths and the entire people of the state to take advantage of the golden opportunity being provided in the agricultural sector by participating in one form of agricultural activity or the other to be self-reliant and enhance economic growth of the state.

    He said the state government was already in partnership with numerous National and international organizations to strengthen and boost the agricultural sector to one of the best in the country.

    “This will help a robust synergy with development partners and the Federal Government to develop our potentials for enhanced agricultural activities as well diversify our sources of revenue “, he said.

    Governor signs Bill on Community Guards Corps establishment

    Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto yesterday signed into law, a Bill for the establishment of the state Community Guards Corps.

    He said all hands must be on deck for a crime free state.

    Dr. Sokoto appealed to the police and other agencies to embrace the corps in order to address insecurity.

    He said Sokoto was among the frontline states especially in the Northwest facing security challenges occasioned by banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling and other criminal acts.

    Signing the bill at the Government House, the governor said the corps would serve as a support drive in complementing the efforts of conventional security agencies through providing useful intelligence from across communities for their operations.

    “We have been destabilised by the activities of bandits and criminals against the peaceful nature of our dear state.’’

    He said security agencies should not see the corps as a rival, but a link to ensure better and responsive synergy, in order to secure the state.

    “We have put in place necessary mechanisms for the peaceful take off of the corps.

    “Let me say here that we are committed to the cause of protecting lives and property of citizens.

    “Our efforts need to be supported by the people of the state to realise a crime free Sokoto,” he said.

    Deputy Governor Idris Muhammad Gobir, Speaker House of Assembly Tukur Bala Bodinga, All Progressives Congress (APC) state Chairman  Sadik Isah Achida and acting Chairman Committee on the Establishment of the Guards Corps Yusha’u Ahmed Kebbe were among top officials who witnessed the brief signing ceremony.

  • PDP, APC all square in Sokoto House of Assembly

    The Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress almost shared equally the 30 seats available in the Sokoto State House of Assembly, a reflection of the tight race for the governorship seat.

    However, the APC has an edge with 16 members. PDP has 14 members.

    In the governorship election held the same day with Assembly elections, the PDP candidate, incumbent Aminu Tambuwal defeated the candidate of the APC, Ahmed Aliyu by a margin of 342 votes.

  • APC clear National Secretary, 23 others for 2019 governorship poll

    The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) has affirmed the nomination of the party’s National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni and 23 others as governorship candidates of the party for the 2019 governorship election across the country.

    Also cleared to fly the party flag are Lagos state flag bearer, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Kaduna state Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, Kano state Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Plateau state Governor, Simon Lalong, Bauchi state Governor, Mohammed Abubakar, Kebbi state Governor, Abubakar Bagudu and Katsina state Governor, Aminu Bello MASARI.

    Acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Yekini Nabena said in a statement that the clearance followed the adoption of the report of the various electoral committee sent to conduct the primaries in the various states.

    The governorship primaries for Enugu, Kwara and Adamawa states have not been conducted, while the party has cancelled the primary in Zamfara and Imo states due to irregularities.

    The NWC also approved the report of the pane, that conducted the governorship primary in Ogun State which declared Dapo Abiodun as the candidate of the party.

    Sokoto House of Assembly loses Clerk

    The Clerk of Sokoto State House of Assembly, Alhaji Suleiman Muhammad, died in the early hours of Tuesday at the age of  53, a statement from the assembly said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Muhammad died at the Specialist Hospital, Sokoto, after a brief illness.

    His remains were buried in Sokoto after a funeral prayer at the Sultan Muhammadu Maccido Jumaat Mosque, Sokoto, attended by Gov. Aminu Tambuwal.

    Also at the funeral were the state Deputy Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, Speaker of the Assembly, Salihu Maidaji and his deputy, Abubakar Magaji, among others.

    The deceased, who was seconded from the state civil service, assumed the position after the retirement of the erstwhile clerk in 2016.

    Muhammad is survived by his aged parents, three wives and 13 children.

    Ebola: No case in Sokoto, say health commissioner

    THE Sokoto State Government yesterday denied it has recorded any case of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

    The Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, said there has been no report of outbreak of the virus in any part of the state.

    Aliyu spoke in Sokoto during a public lecture on Ebola organised by the Usman Dan Fodio University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto.

    He said Sokoto embarked on a state-wide public sensitisation campaign as part of proactive measures to guard against Ebola.

    “It was in view of this that the state government set up detection centres across the three senatorial districts, which include Gwadabawa, Shagari and Tangaza local government areas for referrals and investigation purposes,” he explained.

    The commissioner further disclosed that similar centres have been set up at the Sokoto Specialist Hospital, Maryam Abacha Women and Children Hospital and Noma Hospital Sokoto, while the Amanawa Leprosy Patients hospital had been designated as an isolation camp.

    He called on traditional and religious leaders to redouble efforts in sensitising their subjects on the need to take precautions while handling domestic animals, especially in the rural areas.

    The Director of Port Health, Federal Ministry of Health Abuja, Dr. Nasiru Gwarzo, advised people with symptoms of fever of whatever kind to keep away from public gatherings as much as possible.

    According to him: “Ebola virus disease is ranked the 2nd most deadly and infectious disease that can be spread in no time worldwide.”

    He expressed optimism that the virus would be contained in Lagos State.

    “We need to urgently educate and encourage the public to seek medical advice on the deadly disease as fundamentals to curing the Ebola scourge,” he appealed.

    The Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, Professor Abdulkadir Junaidu noted that 75% of human diseases originated from animals.

    He pointed out that Ebola virus was one of the numerous diseases associated with animals.
