    ‘No clue on killers of family of six in Ogun’

    No clue yet to the ‘insiders’ suspected  to have assassinated a Muslim cleric, Sheik Yussuf Abdul-Salam, his wife and four children in their home at the Atiba area of Odogbolu,  near Ijebu – Ode, Ogun State.

    Sheik Yusuf Abdulsalam Tanimola in his 30s, his wife and four children, including eight years old twins were found dead, in their home last Tuesday morning by their neighbours.

    The cleric was said to have been smashed to death with stone while his wife and children were hacked down with machetes by suspected killers, who stole into their home and murdered them in a pre – dawn attack.

    The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, who had visited the scene to assess the situation, told journalists that the killing might have been perpetrated by an “insider” or with the help of an insider.

    “The trace of the modus that is used seems that there is work of an insider…It’s a constructive act; when we say constructive act, it means an act which is done by a knowledge of the inside of the place,” Iliyasu said.

    And check by The Nation revealed that there is no clue yet to the people that wiped out the Atiba family of six, no arrest have also been made but investigation  into the killing persists even as the Police have embarked on “massive manhunt to track down the killers” and apprehend them.

    The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, told The Nation that there was no arrest yet but investigation continues.

    Abimbola added that the motive for the killing is also not yet established, but assured that the Police would get the killers.

    We can’t carry burden of Policing Nigeria alone – Police

    The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Ahmed Iliyasu, on Tuesday urged indigenes and residents to get involved in the security of their lives and properties by supporting the Police to effectively police the state.

    Iliyasu said the task of policing the society should no longer be left for the Police alone to carry, adding that safety of lives and properties is the responsibility of everybody.

    The Commissioner made this known at the Police Officers Mess, Abeokuta, the Ogun State, during a seminar organised by the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in the state under the leadership of Alh. Ibrahim Olaniyan for members in Abeokuta metropolis.

    Iliyasu who was represented at the event by the Police Area Commander for Abeokuta Area Command, Mr Okon Effiong Okon, said community policing is one of the ways to prevent crime and criminality in the society.

    He lamented that many Nigerians are neither cooperative nor observant when it comes to making the society safe.

    He said in Egypt, if you ask a mere roadside trader whether she saw a man who just passed – by, the trader would say yes and also give  the direction the person went, but added that should a Police man  ask a Nigerian just the same question, he would say he saw nobody.

    The Commissioner noted that the attitude of some police officers do not help matter, saying they discourage members of the public from assisting them with useful information.

    According to him, a Police officer needed not “be a devil before he can police work.”

    He urged the PCRC members to listen to public opinion, do the job of helping the police with smile and ensure that nobody hide in their midst to cover their criminal tendencies.

    We’re tracking abductors Turkish school pupils, others – Police

    The Ogun State Police Command on Monday said it is still working to track the abductors of some pupils and staff of the Nigeria Turkish International Colleges (NTIC), Isheri, Ogun State in order to rescue the victims.

    The Command’s Police Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, told The Nation that the Police is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident and would make public, the finding known when there is a breakthrough.

    Abimbola expressed the optimism that the victims would be rescued safe and alive.

    Five students and three staff of the NTIC located in Isheri community were abducted last Friday night by suspected gunmen and taken to a yet – to – be determined location.

    The Nation gathered that among those abducted are three regular students and two others who were preparing for the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board exams, and three members of staff while a cook was also taken away from the kitchen.

    Earlier, Abimbola told The Nation that security chiefs from the Nigerian army, Navy, Police and Department of State Security Service(DSS) in Ogun State had moved to Isheri, on Saturday to coordinate efforts towards search and rescue of the victims.

    The security chiefs, he added, include the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the mechanised army, Director of DSS, Police Commissioner, Ahmed Iliyasu and the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2, Lagos and other senior security officers.

    According to Abimbola, the details of the strategies adopted towards search and rescue of the captives won’t be disclosed until success is achieved.

  • Police arrest 17 ‘cultists’ in Ogun

    The Ogun State Police Command has arrested 17 men for cult related activities in Ijebu-Igbo area of the state.

    It said the men were apprehended in four areas of the town following a distress call to the police by residents of the area that some hoodlums were on rampage.

    The command’s Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, told journalists on Thursday that preliminary investigations showed that the men belonged to “Eiye” and “Aiye” cult groups.

    The two rival cult groups have been battling for supremacy in the area.

    “On receipt of the distress call, the Divisional Police Officer, Ijebu Igbo Division, Agene James, led teams of policemen to the scene while reinforcement was also sent by the Area Commander, Ijebu-Ode and the activities of the hoodlums were successfully curtailed.

    “At the end of the operation, 17 suspects were arrested and weapons such as locally made guns, knife, charms and bags containing weeds suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered from them.

    “The Area Commander, Funso Ajao, who coordinated the operation, is fully on ground to monitor the situation in order to prevent the hoodlums from regrouping.”

    He added that Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, had ordered that suspects be transferred to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for discrete investigation.

    “The CP appealed to members of the public to go about their businesses without fear of any harassment from any quarter as adequate security arrangement is on ground to ensure that residents of the state sleep with their two eyes closed,” Oyeyemi said.

    Police arrest man for selling step – daughter’s head, hands  to ritualists

    The Police in Ogun State have arrested one Korede Odubela for selling the head and hands of his step-daughter, Amudalat Oshimodi, to ritualists.

    Odubela was said to have strangled the girl to death, harvested her head and hands before selling them to ritualists.

    Also arrested in connection with the ritual murder of Amudalat, is Lekan Lawal, who allegedly assisted Odubela to strangle the victim at  Imosan area of  Ifesowapo Local Council Development Area of Ogun State.

    The duo who confessed to committing the crime, were paraded Tuesday at Eleweran, the Headquarters of Ogun State Police Command, by the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu.

    Iliyasu said the suspected choked the victim  to death and later sold  her head and hands  to ritualists.

    Odubela who admitted the crime, told reporters that he and Lekan carried out the heinous crime.

    Odubela said: “it is true that Lekan Lawal and I connived to kill my step-daughter. The girl was 16 years old, she was always stealing her mother’s money.

    “And the mother said we should kill her as a sacrifice for the other children she had. Since she normally sleep at the door post outside.

    “So, on the fateful night around 12 midnight, I invited Lekan Lawal, and he held the girl by the neck and strangled her while I held her legs. That was how she died.”

    According to him, his step -daughter’s head was sold to one  Seun, a herbalist at N3,000.

    The Police Commissioner told reporters that  the case was still being investigated while the remains  of Amudalat has been deposited at the morgue of State Hospital, Ijebu Ode.
