    Makarfi PDP backs restructuring

The Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has added its voice to the calls for the restructuring of the country.

Addressing a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Makarfi said the PDP believed that in any democratic space, allowance must be made for people to express grievances and agitate for the redress of such, stressing that it’s a vital ingredient that sustains democracy and the rule of law.

The party chief however expressed worry over the manner in which the agitations and counter agitations have assumed secessionist dimension in certain quarters.

He called on the Federal Government to provide the enabling environment for discussions among the various ethnic groups in the country determine the way forward.

Makarfi said, “The PDP has no problem with agitations; in fact, we respect them and regard them as vehicles through which all segments vent their legitimate feelings.

“As Nigerians and a people, we cannot run away from talking to one another but this should be on the basis of mutual respect, confidence and even empathy.

“This will enable us to have a proper understanding of the feelings and yearnings of one another and properly appreciating where we all are coming from, as individual groups and as a whole.

“Nigeria as a federation has come a long way and it is our duty as individuals and a whole to ensure that it endures; and indeed surpasses the dreams of our founding fathers.

“Every step we take must be, as the Americans would say, ‘towards a more perfect union’. We are therefore free, to at any point in time take a look at the structures of the union, not its basis, and effect whatever corrections we collectively agree are necessary.

“It is in this context that we view calls from some quarters for the restructuring of our own concept and practice of federalism.

“It is therefore important that we consider the framework within which we can even discuss and be on the same page as to what kind of restructuring we mean or desire; and if nationally accepted, agree on frame work for its implementation.

“But we want to urge all of our people that in trying to draw attention to their yearnings and aspirations, respect for one another and the realisation that our rights do not include encroachment into, and infringement on the legitimate rights and dignity of others, should guide our conduct”.

Makarfi blamed military incursion into politics from the mid-1960s, saying the development eroded the very essence of federalism as was practiced pre and immediate post-independence.

According to him, the military in governance largely serviced the command structure of the military and that even democratic administrations have had to make do with military imposed structures.

“Such democratic dispensations, including ours, have had to govern by the dictates of constitutions promulgated by the military institution which is basically unitary by nature”, he added.

The PDP caretaker committee chairman said now that democracy has got foothold in the country, a critical look at areas that need improvement has become imperative.

Continuing, Makarfi said, “It is therefore not out of place for any, or all segment(s) to come up with ideas that they believe will strengthen the structures of our federalism with a view to restructuring it in such a way that it serves all of us and not just some of us.

“Such exercise should take a very good and critical look at all the structures and institutions as well as how they operate with a view to giving them a new sense of direction in tune with current best practices, though, as with all societies, taking due consideration of our peculiarities as a people”.

The former Kaduna State Governor however called for strong institutions that would serve the state and not the whims and interests of those in charge at any given time.

“We, for example need institutions like armed forces and security agencies to operate on the premise of loyalty to the nation rather than loyalty to the President, Governor or whatever nomenclature the Chief Executive is given.

“This should not look like a novel idea because we see it happening everyday around the world in countries that have built strong institutions that are the bastions of their democratic structures.

“The recent altercation between some of our people which degenerated into the issuance of ultimatum and counter ultimatum for some of us to leave certain areas is an ill wind that blows no good, more so that we have a sad history of not so dissimilar circumstances that we had better not allow a repeat.

“Hate speeches either coming from the North, South, East or West must be avoided and be condemned by all of us.

“This country belongs to all of us, and every one of us must be allowed to enjoy the constitutional guarantee of freedom to live and move about this vast God-blessed land without let or hindrance to pursue his or her legitimate endeavours.

“But I reiterate that mutual respect and accommodation are a very necessary ingredient. We have had that before; we still have that and must not allow it to elude us.

“We must also ensure that we have a better legacy to upcoming generations than the one bequeathed to us, and not worse. This is the way decent societies are built and developed by each generation building on the blocks laid by its predecessor(s), not destroying what they found in place.

“There is no harm however in trying to improve upon an existing structure. North, South, East or West, we remain Nigerians and we must continue to make conscious and deliberate efforts to develop and not diminish this our beloved country.

“We must therefore, as in any vibrant union continue to engage ourselves in various conversations that will oil the wheels of our progress.

“We however observe that restructuring could mean a different thing to different people. Whatever comes out of such exercise, so long as it is the aggregate agreement of our people, we should get to work to ensure that it works”.

Makarfi commended Acting President Yemi Osinbajo for the way and manner he handled the tension generated by the agitations and counter agitations by some elements in the Southeast and a group of Northern youths.

Said he, “The Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo deserves commendation for the steps he has so far taken to douse the tension occasioned by the altercation, but we call on all government to build on that by ensuring that its programmes, policies and steps are tailored in such a way and manner that no section of this country is given the impression that it doesn’t count.

“At this juncture, let me seize this opportunity, on behalf of the entire membership of PDP to join all compatriots in sympathising with our President and praying over the current state of his health. We wish President Muhammadu Buhari a quick recovery.

“Let me reiterate the belief of the PDP in the unity of this country as well as its unwavering commitment towards the attainment of its manifest destiny as a country of pride to the entire black race.

“The party has tried to give its best in the first 16 years of this dispensation. In the course of that period, we scored many firsts, but as is to be expected in any human endeavour, we couldn’t escape making mistakes here and there.

“But overall, we are proud of the milestones reached under the stewardship of our party, especially put side by side with what obtains in the polity currently.

“We believe that human and national development however well defined, normally comes with challenges, it is the handling of such challenges that determines the direction that the development takes.

“As a country and a people, we have faced several developmental challenges; some have been resolved while many others are yearning for resolution.

“And even after such resolution, as it’s typical of the evolution of human societies, we should expect to be confronted by new and emerging challenges.

“It is thus the responsibility of each generation of our leaders to grapple with and handle such emerging challenges in the best way possible. It is always a work in progress”

  • New Media: PDP denies sacking Adeyanju as director

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday denied rumours of sacking its Director of New Media, Deji Adeyanju.

Chairman of the party’s Caretaker Committee, Ahmed Makarfi, who disclosed this to an online news platform said that the leadership of the party only had issues with some ‘far-reaching statements’ distributed by Mr. Adeyanju ‘without.’

Mr. Adeyanju was announced removed in a statement distributed by Dayo Adeyeye, the party’s publicity secretary, on Friday afternoon. The statement cited different acts of insubordination.

Contrary to statements credited to Dayo Adeyeye, PDP’s publicity secretary announcing Adeyanju’s sack, Mr. Makarfi, in a statement, said the PDP still recognises Mr. Adeyanju and the new media department.

However, he added the activities of the New media department would be streamlined going forward.

“If he was employed by the last National Working Committee, then we will have no reason to remove him but to streamline his work,” Makarfi, the former governor of Kaduna State stressed.

Recall that Makarfi is the head of an ad-hoc leadership set up by the party at its botched national convention in Port Harcourt last month.

Mr. Adeyanju was appointed in December 2015, and had been responsible for issuing press statements on behalf of the party.
After months of controversial statements following the party’s 2015 elections misfortune, the PDP apologised for contributing to the toxic atmosphere on social media and promied to improve on its opposition by making it more robust and constructive.

PDP convention to hold in Abuja, says BoT

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has directed the Ahmed Makarfi led Caretaker Committee to hold the party’s repeat national convention in Abuja instead of Port Harcourt.

The directive was contained in a communique issued by the BoT after a marathon meeting in Abuja Monday.

The communique, signed by BoT chairman, Sen. Walid Jubrin, also directed that the convention planning committee headed by the Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike be disbanded.

It ordered the Makarfi caretaker committee to set up of a new planning committee, to be approved by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.

Two previous attempts by the PDP to hold the convention in Port Harcourt in May and August this year ended in a fiasco, throwing the party into deeper crisis arising.

The directives by the BoT were part of the conditions given by the faction led by the estranged National Chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff for peace and reconciliation with the Makarfi committee before the last botched convention.

Thee BoT’s communique read in part, “The next convention should be held in Abuja.

“To ensure a credible, transparent, free and fair convention, a new Convention Planning Committee should be constituted by the National Caretaker Committee and approved by NEC”.

The communique further stated that the BoT should facilitate fund raising for the running of the party and directed to reconciliation committee headed by a former Information Minister, Prof. Jerry Gana to continue with its reconciliation efforts.

The meeting ended with the BoT passing a vote of confidence on the Makarfi led caretaker committee.

It charged the committee to convene a meeting of the NEC, with the view to approving proposals designed to steer the party away from crisis.

  • Makarfi committee set to conduct congresses in Imo, Yobe

The Ahmed Makarfi led Caretaker Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has announced preparations for state congresses in Imo and Yobe states.

A statement last night signed by a member of the committee, Senator Abdul Ningi said the congress will take place on Monday August 8. The congresses are meant to fill vacuum created by the failed congresses in the two states in May.

The statement said, “Sections 15 (1) (e) and 18 (1) (g) of the PDP Constitution (As Amended in 2012) provide that 3 Ad-hoc delegates shall be elected at Ward Congresses to LGA and State Congresses.

“Section 18 (2) (c) stipulates that National Delegates shall be elected at LGA Congresses to the National Convention. In both cases, Ward Ad-Hoc and National Delegates shall cease to function at the conclusion of congresses or National Convention for which they were elected.

According to the guideline, ward congresses will take place in the two states on August 10, while the local government congresses will hold on August 12.

This is coming just as the Ali Modu Sheriff faction announced the lifting of the suspension order placed on some chieftains of the party in Abia state.

In a separate statement last night jointly signed by Sheriff and factional National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, the group voided the suspension order placed on Messers Chidi Nwosu (Umuahia South) Emeka Ejiogu (Umuahia North) and Chukwuemeka Osoagbaka (Ikwuano).

The statement said, “The NWC frowns at a situation where party members are being victimized because of their loyalty to the leadership at the national level.

“It is important that all organs of the party must respect party members’ wish to associate with other members irrespective of various affiliations. The crisis going on in the party is an internal matter and is in the process of resolution.

“It is worthy to note that party members in Abia state being so victimized have not committed any anti-party activity.

“In the light of this, the NWC hereby directs the Abia state chapter to immediately rescind the purported suspensions and show, within 48 hours, evidence of its compliance with the NWC.

“Failure to comply will attract stiff sanctions in accordance with the constitution of the PDP”.

  • PDP crisis: Sheriff lists conditions for truce

PDP crisis: Sheriff lists conditions for truce

The factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff has called for the dissolution of the Ahmed Makarfi led caretaker committee as a condition for reconciliation.

Sheriff said that was the demand he tabled at a meeting last week with Makarfi and two governors from the Northeast geopolitical zone.

At a media briefing in Abuja on Monday, Sheriff said he had made it clear with the governors- Darius Ishaku (Taraba) and Ibrahim Dankwabo (Gombe) that the caretaker committee was an aberration to the PDP constitution.

The embattled party chairman made the declaration while receiving a delegation of PDP supporters from 17 local government areas in Abia state who paid him a solidarity visit.

He also asked to be allowed to nominate 10 members into the convention committee, with Makarfi also nominating 10 members.

The proposed convention is billed to hold in Port Harcourt on August 17. But Sheriff said the convention should hold in Abuja.

Sheriff dismissed claims that he was the problem with the PDP, saying that the crisis in the party was being fueled by some persons who regard the PDP as their personal property.

He vowed to resist such persons, saying there will be no room for them to operate as long as he remained chairman.

Sheriff said, “People are very interested in our party and how the crisis will be settled. Before the Port Harcourt convention which was aborted by a court order.

“Yes, we met and issues were discussed but all the issues I put forward to them was for the Makarfi caretaker committee to resign.

“Since it is (committee) an aberration as far as our party constitution is concern. I told them that I am not ready to be a permanent chairman but I want the party to be placed in proper stead.

“If he resigns tomorrow, I will ask the members of my National Working Committee (NWC) whose tenure will expire in 2018, including myself to resign.

“Then we will set up a convention committee in Abuja and put respected members and leader at the wards as members of the committee.

“In that convention, I will give away my mandate that does not expire until 2018 and I remain the national chairman of this party until 2018.

“If the leaders of our party felt that we can find a solution without exhausting the pending court processes, then I am open to a political solution.

“There is nothing like what has been reported. If you do not stand on the truth, the end result will be a serious distraction.

The leader of the Abia delegation, Mr. Chidi Nwosu called on Sheriff to look into the flawed congresses in Abia with the view to correcting the anomalies.

Nwosu said the congresses were conducted by a few powerful men who sat in their rooms and hotel accommodations where they picked the delegates.
