  • AHMED MUSA : Why I sent my wife on Hajj first

AHMED MUSA : Why I sent my wife on Hajj first

Ahmed Musa, Super Eagles forward speaks with Morakinyo Abodunrin on his rich vein of form and the secret behind his recent burst of goals for both club and country

It is one of the cardinal poles of the Islamic religion so much so that most  men usually  embark on the  pilgrimage to Mecca before sending  their wives to the holy land, but Ahmed Musa  has sensationally revealed why it was his wife that performed the sacred obligation first.

The Super Eagles’ top scorer at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil has been in rich vein of form for both club and country scoring a successive brace as Nigeria thrashed Sudan 3-1 penultimate Wednesday in a 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier as well CSKA’s 6-0 demolition of Kuban Krasnodar in the Russian League last Saturday.

But  you don’t have to worry about the secret behind Musa’s sudden burst of goals  following his disclosure to The Nation Sport & Style that the pillar behind his success is no other than his adorable wife, Jamila.

“I actually sent my wife to Hajj (Mecca) this year because she has been a strong pillar to me,” Musa said emphatically. “She has (religiously) been observing all the other four pillars of Islam and she needed to go to Mecca to complete the fifth as well as pray for the success of the family and my progress in particular.

“She is God sent and has been very supportive to me since we married. I am happy to have her as my wife because she knows how to raise my morale when it is down,” he added.

God has been kind to Ahmed and Jamila since they made the leap of faith to become husband and wife. Last year, Jamila gave birth to their first son at the Standard Hospital in Kano on March 30 and Musa was one of the stars when the Super Eagles won the AFCON trophy in South Africa.

“It was a great feeling to score for the Super Eagles and I was really happy to have scored twice against Sudan,” he said. “There was no special reason I ran to Coach Keshi after the first goal against Sudan.

“He didn’t tell me anything special before the kick off (against Sudan) than the normal talk before every game, but just to appreciate him because he is like a father to me.”

Musa, as widely reported, began his career in the Aminchi Football Academy. In 2008, he was loaned to JUTH F.C. where he played 18 games, scoring four goals in his first two professional seasons for the Healers. He was subsequently loaned to Kano Pillars. In the 200910 season, he set the league record with 18 goals as Pillars finished second. He previously held the record of the highest number of goals ever scored in one season in the history of the Nigeria Premier League until November 2011 when Jude Aneke of Kaduna United F.C. set a new goals record of 20 goals.

He transferred to VVV-Venlo in summer 2010 at age 17 but was officially eligible to play for the Dutch club on October 14, 2010 when he eventually turned 18 years of age. Less than a week after arriving at the club, Musa made his debut for VVV-Venlo against FC Groningen on 30 October. Musa won the AIT Footballer of the Year award in 2011 and on January 7, 2012 he signed for Russian side CSKA Moscow.

At a time many analysts faulted Musa’s move to Moscow after he spun offers from top sides including Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Everton, Schalke 04, Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart, his mentor, Ahmed Ibrahim (aka Coach Bros), said then the lad would be better for it.

“He chose CSKA because he will have opportunity to feature in the UEFA Champions League or Europa League regularly and he will also have regular playing time,” offered Ibrahim. “He did not go there mainly for money, but, of course, he would most certainly have an improved contract to what he had while he was in Holland.

“He was born and brought up in Jos which has a very cold weather, so adapting to the Russian cold won’t be too challenging for Ahmed as he has been used to cold weather right from childhood,” he argued.

Two years on, Musa similarly told The Nation Sport & Style, adding that he’s enjoying his football at CSKA Moscow: “There is little difference between the Dutch and Russian leagues,” said the fleet- footed striker. “They are both top class leagues and at the same level, but the only thing is that it is very cold here in Russia. I have not witnessed racism at CSKA and my immediate priority now is to win the Russian league again and help Nigeria secure AFCON ticket,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Musa has reportedly been tipped as one of the next big deals by CSKA Moscow coach, Leonid Slutsky.

“He came to us as a talented 19-year-old from the Dutch league. It took him time, but he is at the right age to excel now,” Slutsky reportedly told the Russian media. “He is finally fulfilling the potential that made the club spend that much on him, at age 22 he has now added consistency to his game and he can only get better.”

The former Kano Pillars goal king arrived the Russian capital for €5M and in his four years with the team he has won back to back league title in addition to lifting the Russian cup last year. His medal haul in Russia also include

Super Eagles suffered a blow after CSKA Moscow forward, Ahmed Musa skipped training ahead of tomorrow’s AFCON clash against Sudan.

Musa could be a major injury concern for Nigeria in the encounter holding at the Abuja International Stadium.

Team officials said Ahmed Musa is nursing a knock he picked up from Saturday’s 1-0 loss in Sudan.

The flying winger has started the Eagles last three matches.

Nigeria missed Stoke City star, Victor Moses and Ukraine-based forward, Babatunde Michael for the first AFCON qualifier in Sudan on account of injury.

The African champions host Sudan tomorrow by 5pm in Abuja.

Musa gets shoot on sight order against Bayern

    •Coach demands 100% imput

Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa will have more than enough to do as  CSKA Moscow host Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions league  at the Arena Khimki today. Unfortunately, Musa who has been listed in Stephen Keshi’s 23- man Super Eagles squad to face  Falcons of Sudan October 10, will be tackling a rampaging Bayern with his teammates behind closed doors.  This follows UEFA’s hammer on the Russian side after it was found guilty of “a range of racist and far-right symbols” in a Champions League match against Viktoria Plzen last December.

CSKA can best be said to be scared of the encounter, especially after flagging off the 2014-15 campaign on a miserable note with 5-1 loss to Roma in the Italian capital.

Coach Slutsky did not mince words in admitting that today’s encounter will be tough for his boys. Last season Bayern defeated CSKA home and away in the group stage a record which appears to be giving the club and their fans goose pimples. Despite the obvious odd that seems to weigh against the Russian side coach Slutsky remains optimistic that the side can survive even as he challenged Musa and his teammates to put in nothing less than 100% in the  battle.

“Of course our opponents are supremely talented and it is a difficult situation for us,” he said.

“Last year we lost a few games against Bayern and [Manchester] City, which hit us hard and unfortunately we have continued our poor run of form away from home.

“It’s not nice to recognise that there are teams who are just far more talented and are at a different level. Our task is that the team plays to its absolute maximum capacity – will this be enough? We will only know when the game gets underway.”

Georgi Schennikov, who has recently recovered from injury, implored his team-mates to put that heavy defeat behind them.

“We need to forget about the game with Roma and get ready for the encounter with Bayern Munich,” he said. “Of course this is a special game.

“To play against such opponents is always interesting. They are a very strong side. Who in particular? Well I just think everything is so good.

“Physically, I am feeling good and my leg has not been causing me any problems over the last few games.”

Musa misses out on Russian award

CSKA Moscow forward Ahmed Musa has missed out on winning the Most Valuable Player in the Russian Premier League for the eighth round of matches.

The in-form Nigeria international has notched up four goals in his last four games for the Muscovites, including the winner against city rivals Lokomotiv Moscow this past weekend.

The 21-year-old was recognized by the Russian Football Federation in partnership with Championat.com after both organizations nominated him alongside Salomon Rondon (Zenith St Petersburg), Alexei Ionov (Dynamo Moscow), Oleg Ivanov (Terek) and Jose Jurado (Spartak Moscow).

They were joined on the nine-man shortlist by Danilo (Kuban), Zhoaozino (Krasnodar), Andrey Semenov (Terek) and David Yurchenko (Ufa).

Zenith St Petersburg’s striker Salomon Rondon (30%) was awarded the MVP in the Championship ahead of Aleksei Ionov, Jose Jurado and Ahmed Musa, who mustered nine percent of the 2,793 votes.

Ahmed Musa also failed to win the RPL Player of the Week when he was shortlisted in October 2012 and March 2013.

Ahmed Musa: Eagles will win for Nigerians

CSKA Moscow of Russia striker Ahmed Musa is  fired up for the latest round of national duty with the Super Eagles of Nigeria. Musa, the first Nigerian to score more than once in a FIFA World Cup match after finding the net twice against Argentina in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, told SportingLife’s TAOFEEK BABALOLA in this interview that the Super Eagles won’t disappoint Nigerians when they face Congo’s Red Devils in the 2015 AFCON qualifier today.

Nigeria are African champions and countries usually go the extra mile when playing the Super Eagles. How prepared are you and your colleagues for Congo’s antics?

We are very, very prepared. Any country that wants to play Nigeria will want to try their best to beat us but we will always try our best to defeat them and still remain Africa’s best.

Are there things the Super Eagles plan to do differently against Congo on Saturday, things that Nigerians should be watching out for?

There is no difference in the team. What Nigerians used to see is what they are going to see on Saturday. All I can say is that we won’t disappoint them.

How many goals should Nigerians be expecting on Saturday?

I don’t know because I don’t want to predict. All I know is that we will give our best. I know by the grace of God we are going to win.

So, your message for Nigerians is?

We know what Nigerians want; Nigerians want victory and by the grace of God we’ll give it to them.

After Congo, Nigeria will face South Africa. Do you think the team has the ability to outwit the Bafana Bafana?

We have to be focused for the first game so as not to put more pressure on ourselves. So when we prosecute Congo’s game successfully then we can talk about South Africa.

It is always difficult playing against South Africa. They are familiar foes; we know them and they know us. I know when we get to the bridge we will know how to cross it.

What are you expecting from Nigerians on Saturday?

Good. Nigerians should come out en masse to support us on Saturday. That is what we need from them. By the grace of God we will make them proud.

How would you rate Nigeria’s performance at the last World Cup in Brazil?

We did very well, for some years Nigeria had not got to the stage we reached at the last World Cup in Brazil. I think you should answer that question based on your assessment of our performance during the World Cup. We tried our best and gave everything for all the matches we played.

Thank you for talking to Sportinglife.

    You are welcome.

Ebola: Mikel arrives Eagles’ camp, armed with gloves

Super Eagles midfielder, Mikel Obi, arrived the team training camp in Calabar armed with several hand gloves.

He arrived the Eagles camp as scheduled and told Stephen Keshi he has at least four hand gloves as part of his own personal fight against Ebola, africanFootball.com reports.

“Coach I have up to four hand gloves and if you don’t mind, I can hand one pair to you,” Mikel told Keshi with the rest of the squad reeling with laughter.

Nigeria has recorded five deaths since the Ebola outbreak last month.

However, the spirit in camp is very buoyant with the arrival of the superstars and Keshi said he expects the best from the players against Congo on Saturday.

Meanwhile, 17 players have reported to camp with more players expected before the evening training after only nine players trained in the morning.

Ahmed Musa, Ogenyi Onazi, Efe Ambrose, Kenneth Omeruo, Juwon Oshaniwa, Sone Aluko, and stand-in captain Austin Ejide have all arrived the team camp.
