  • AT AIFF, FILMMAKERS TASKED ON PATRIOTISM IN MOVIES

    WITH the theme, ‘Film as a Tool for National Security and Patriotism’, the 14th edition of the Abuja International Film Festival (AIFF) held sway recently at the Federal Capital Territory.
    The event featured screening of movies, awards, exhibitions, talent campus, seminars and workshops.
    According to Temitope Duker, the newly appointed Festival Director of the AIFF, the theme of the festival reflects the mood of the nation at the moment and there is a need for filmmakers to begin to imbibe the notion of patriotism in their films.
    This, she said, can only be achieved by their understanding that film has a potent role to play in the patriotism and security of any nation.
    The festival had in attendance several notable Nollywood Filmmakers. Also from the Diplomatic mission was the Chinese Cultural Attache Mr. Li Xung, Miss Wang, The US Embassy In Abuja Cultural Officer Mr. Lawrence Socha, The Chairman NDDC Senator Victor Ndoma Egba Represented by his Special Adviser Media, The Executive Director National Film and Video Censors Board Mr. Adedayo Thomas, the Managing Director Of Nigerian Film Corporation Mr Chidia Maduekwe Represented by Mrs. Halima Oyelade.
    The Festival ended on Friday 13tth of October with the Award ceremony where the Winning films in fifteen selected categories went home with the awards for the 14th Abuja International Film Festival.
    Special recognition awards were also conferred on some eminent Nigerians who have in one way or the other supported the industry or the nation based on the theme of the festival.
    Among the winning movies were Rose House – China (Best Animation), Remu (Best Experimental), Wolf Totem (Best Feature Film: Foreign), ‘The Women’ (Best Feature: Indigenous) and a host of others.

    Lai Mohammed gives AIFF 2016 kudos

    THE minster of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has called on Nigerian filmmakers to maintain the enviable standard of making the industry a reference point of a robust film sector in Africa.

    Mohammed who declared the festival open on Tuesday, October 4, commended the organisers for sustaining the festival which was first held in 20103.

    β€œThe film festival has turned out to be a very good tourism for people outside the country to come and see what we have as a country. We are not only good at producing films but also good at making use of it. Film industry, I believe we soon become the cynosure for other countries. Nigeria film industry has and we always be a point of reference to other film industry in Africa,” the Minister said.

    Speaking on its theme, Connecting Global Audiences, convener of the festival, Fidelis Duker, a front line filmmaker said that it is a way to get closer to the people via film showing.

    The 4-day festival, witnessed series of activities including screening of films, workshop and seminars. It had in attendance film makers from across Africa and beyond.

    In attendance to add glitz and glamour to the festival were Nollywood icons like Richard Mofe-Damijo, Paul Obasele, Zach Orji, Segun Arinze, prolific director Lanceot Imaseun, and many A list actors and actresses outside the continent.

    Meanwhile, the festival came to its glamorous ending with the award for individual actor and films makers. The highlight of it was the emergency of Judith Audu Nollywood actress and a producer who carted home the Best Actress for her role in her debut feature production, Just Not Married.

    Receiving the award, the excited actress said that she feels blessed getting recognition like this at a time when so much is happening with the movie.

    Since the release of the movie, Just Not Married has fetched the actress accolades from several quarters.

  • AIFF announces nominees

    IN its 10th year running, the Abuja International Film Festival, AIFF, has chosen for induction as patron some eminent Nigerians who have supported the Nigerian Movie and creative industry called Nollywood. According to the organisers, patrons selected are Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi OFR, Mr. Ini Akpabio, Mr Chima Onyekwere OON, Mrs Onari Duke, Hon. Paul Kalejaiye, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Sen. Victor Ndoma Egba, Mr. Andy Boyo, Hon. Ben Nwankwo and Professor Abdusalam Nasidi.

    Also, the festival organisers have said that they have received over 100 entries from over 30 countries which are undergoing screening by the college of screeners. The Festival has also released the list of nominees 45 different movies from 37 different countries of the world would be screened at the 10th edition of the Abuja International Film Festival scheduled to hold between September 24, 2013 and September 27, 2013.

    Information has it that 45 films were shortlisted from the over 200 films from 37 countries for screening at the 10th Abuja international film festival at the Silverbird cinemas, Abuja.

    The films to be screened include The phoenicians(Malta), Andalusia my love(Morocco), Ogondah(Nigeria), Brothers Keeper(Nigeria), I-games(Nigeria), Mission to mamuro(Nigeria), Blood on the dance floor(Nigeria), Lies men tell(Nigeria), Rolling Dollars(Nigeria), Next President(Nigeria), Aiyekoto(Nigeria), Scandalous Mercy(Nigeria), Survival(Nigeria), Truth be told(Nigeria), Torn(Nigeria), Jand hustle(Nigeria), Dread(Nigeria), Paradox(Nigeria), Blue flames(Nigeria) and a host of others.

    The Jury for the 10th Edition, according to the organisers, has the following Professionals in the film and media industry; US Based Connor Ryan A fulbright Fellow on African cinema, Molara Wood Former Arts Editor Guardian & Next, Akofa Edjaeni Asiedu Veteran Ghanaian Actress, Emeka Ossai Film/TV Producer, Patrice Lamonn Curator of ShortImages UK, Victor Okhai festival Director of Inshort Film Festival. Attached to the release is the list of nominees.
