AIG assures policemen of better welfare

Mr. Bala Hassan, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 2, on Monday assured policemen of better welfare to boost their performances toward protection of lives and property.

The AIG gave the assurance at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, during a familiarisation tour.

“Why I’m here with you today is to meet you personally and to tell you that the new AIG has arrived because some of you have not met me.

“My first message is to draw your attention to the fact that to whom much is given, much is expected.

“You will recall that since the Inspector-General (I-G), Solomon Arase, came on board, he has been taking care of your welfare,’’ he told the officers and men of the police.

“My wife told me that the only thing that will make a policeman happy is promotion, I don’t know where she read that from but it’s true that if you give a policeman promotion, he will give you his best.

“When I came in newly, the first thing I was told to do is to go and conduct interview for promotion at Police College from Corporals to Sergeants and Sergeants to Inspectors and I am sure there is more.

“If the promotion is regular, this means the force has done something to motivate us to do our work.

“The people of Lagos State do not expect anything less than high quality service from us.

“The safer highway is to police the highways leading the boundary with Ogun so that there will not be crime.

“And the I-G has told me that before you go on patrol, you should be given fair ration or something to drink.’’

Hasasn said that the directive was to make sure that when you were on the highway, you don’t start blocking roads unnecessarily because road block had been banned.

He added that all the police needed to do was visibility policing as directed by the I-G.

“Allowance will also be given to policemen on safer highways patrol so that they will have something to encourage them to give better service to the nation.

“Similarly on welfare, you will recall that the police force is building some houses so that junior officers will have somewhere to stay after retirement.

“The housing estate has started in Katsina, Enugu and the Goodluck Jonathan Estate at Idimu, Lagos, where you will only pay 10 per cent at first and pay the rest gradually.

“The I-G has allowed you to go and read. You will still work Mondays to Fridays but you can receive lectures at weekends if you are admitted at National Open Universities,’’ Hassan said.

  • AIG kicks as gunmen abduct woman in Bayelsa

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) for Zone 5, Musa Daura, has called for community cooperation to curtail kidnapping in Bayelsa State.

Daura spoke yesterday, following the abduction of Mrs. Adioyili Okorie Agidi.

The 55-year-old woman was reportedly snatched on Sunday by gunmen who operated in a speedboat.

It was gathered that the six gunmen stormed Mrs Agidi’s home at Opume in Ogbia Local Government Area and took her away.

The hoodlums were said to have shot severally into the air to scare Agidi’s neighbours before kidnapping her at 9am.

The Chairman of Ijaw Youths Congress (IYC) in Ogbia, Mr. Osaanya B. Osaanya, urged the abductors to release the woman immediately.

He appealed to security agencies to check incessant kidnappings in the area, saying Mrs Agidi’s abduction was one too many.

Osaanya said: “We are sending a strong message to community leaders, especially in Opume, to be vigilant. We have noticed that each time a prominent chief visits the community, there will be a kidnap case.

“Ijaw youths in the council under my leadership will assist security agencies to ensure that the woman is released.”

Daura, who is the AIG in charge of Edo, Delta and Bayelsa states, said the police were taking measures to check kidnapping and other acts of criminality.

The AIG said since the police were not magicians, they relied on information from communities, especially the coastal settlements, to effectively tackle the menace.

He urged the public to contact the police whenever they noticed strange faces in their area.

Daura, who toured some police formations in Yenagoa and held a meeting with members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), said the police would crack down any criminal case, if they got information on time.

He said: “It is unfortunate that we have these cases of kidnapping. There is nowhere in the world where you won’t experience such things.

“…It was recently I got a report of a robbery in Bayelsa. The state has 80 per cent water and 20 per cent land. So, it is not possible for anybody to come from outside and kidnap in Bayelsa.

“That is one of the reasons we have a partnership with the people. If you notice any strange happening within your domain, report to the nearest police station. We are doing everything possible to make sure we stop kidnappings in the state.”

  • 627m ‘scam’: AIG Mbu lied, says businessman

627m ‘scam’: AIG Mbu lied, says businessman

The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2, Joseph Mbu, has been accused of telling lies over the alleged torture and illegal detention of the Managing Director of Kafisto Oil and Gas ltd, Mr Uwem Antia and his business partner, Alhaji Suleiman Yerima by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and policemen led by DSP Ibrahim Dantoro.

Yerima said they were tortured and detained for 80 days illegally by EFCC and policemen under the command of AIG Mbu.

He also insisted that the foreign exchange business deal for which they were being persecuted were legitimate and in order.

Yerima, who spoke with The Nation yesterday in Abuja, said he stood by his allegations against the EFCC and AIG Mbu.

He released the photograph of Antia who was tortured and had his leg broken by policemen. He said amputation of the leg of Antia was being contemplated by the hospital.

However, EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren said the allegations were not true, adding that they “amounted to tissue of lies from the pit of hell”.

Uwujaren added: “EFCC does not have any torture chamber anywhere in the country. Have you ever seen any person saying he was tortured by EFCC? You are aware of our operations since you have been covering our activities, has any accused person said he was tortured or beaten by our men? By your closeness to EFCC at least you can verify from other sources, we don’t torture people.

“I have told you that EFCC has nothing to do with the alleged torture of Antia, or Suleiman Yerima; if you choose to believe what they are alleging, well, I don’t have any thing else to say. However, if their alleged torture was from some where else, I don’t know, but certainly not from us. There is no iota of truth in it.”

Mbu at a news conference in Lagos denied that his men tortured any accused persons. He described the allegation as false and mischievously concocted by the suspects to frustrate the ongoing investigations into their serial crimes.

The AIG alleged that the officer in charge of the investigation, Ibrahim Dantoro ,was offered N50 million bribe to truncate the case, but he refused and informed the command about it.

Yerima said Mbu was being economical with the truth, saying that as a well-trained police officer, if an accused person offered a bribe, the appropriate thing to do was for the police to set up the accused, collect the bribe and use it as evidence.

Yerima challenged Mbu to disclose to Nigerians the people the bankers (Mr Dennis Ale and Gladys Aginwa of Standard Chartered Bank) are working for, adding that the AIG should establish whether or not the bankers delivered the  money to their clients.

Yerima alleged that it was from Mbu’s men that he learnt that the N627 million belonged to former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan.

Yerima said the EFCC case referred to by AIG Mbu was transferred from Lagos to Jos on the request of a partner, Ibrahim Suleiman, saying: “I am happy I have only one case in Jos, but AIG Mbu should tell Nigerians how many cases have been instituted against him by innocent people across the country.”

He said it was quite unfortunate that the EFCC and  Mbu would refer to him and Antia as serial fraudsters over a business matter that was yet pending in court, maintaining that as far as they were concerned, they remained innocent until the court says otherwise.

Yerima alleged that his life and that of Antia were in danger, adding that he has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and security institutions in the country.

“I am happy I have only one case in Jos, but AIG Mbu should tell Nigerians how many cases have been instituted against him by innocent people across the country”

THE Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 11, Mr. David Omojola, has restated the readiness of the Police towards ensuring the peaceful conduct of the forthcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States.

The AIG gave this assurance during his familiarisation tour of the Ondo State command.

According to him, the Police would leave no stone unturned in partnering with other stakeholders to conduct acceptable elections devoid of rancour.

Omojola charged the officers and men of the command to be up and doing and also identify the likely flash points in the state to ensure that no violence is recorded before, during and after the elections.

In another development, Omojola also assured that the mortgage facility recently introduced by the Police High Command would be for all officers and men irrespective of their ranks.

He said, “Very soon, you would start enjoying the mortgage loans irrespective of your ranks and I want you to get ready for it. The arrangement has been concluded from the headquarters in Abuja.”

He warned them against using the loans for non-profitable or irrelevant ventures, which according to him would negate the purpose for which the loans are meant for.

Speaking earlier, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Patrick Dokubor, said the Command had made a lot of achievements in the areas of combating crime in conjunction with other sister security agencies in the state.
