FG expands digital systems, activates last-mile strategy to improve PHC services — Aina

The federal government is deepening the digitalisation of Nigeria’s primary healthcare (PHC) system to improve service delivery, strengthen decision-making, and expand immunisation coverage nationwide, the Executive Director (ED) of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Muyi Aina, has said.

Addressing journalists during the agency’s quarterly briefing in Abuja, Aina said the reforms are designed to “improve access, strengthen facilities and build community trust” in PHC services.

He explained that digital tools are helping the government act faster and more efficiently. “At least for now, we don’t have enough resources to do everything, but the closer we get to real-time data, the faster and more informed our decisions become,” Aina said.

He confirmed that dashboards showing the performance of PHC facilities nationwide are now publicly accessible, adding that digitised training modules have been deployed to health workers through vetted e-learning platforms.

Aina disclosed that the country has begun deploying electronic medical records under the National Digital Health Initiative, saying, “When a health worker visits, they know what you’ve received and haven’t received. You start to have a health identity and a health record.”

The ED attributed the rising public confidence in PHC systems to the reforms, noting that facility visits had increased from approximately 39 million in 2023 to 47 million now.

“The numbers are trending upwards because people are starting to see that quality is improving,” he said.

On vaccination coverage, Aina said Pentavalent 3 coverage stands at 53 percent, leaving 47 percent of eligible children unprotected, noting that Nigeria has now vaccinated 16.2 million girls against HPV, treated 950,000 people for malaria, 1.4 million for onchocerciasis, 659,000 for lymphatic filariasis, and 353,000 for trachoma, including those reached through recent integrated campaigns.

Aina reported that recent integrated campaigns reached 39 million children with polio vaccine, 59 million children with measles vaccine, and treated millions for malaria and neglected tropical diseases.

He said a second national campaign will run in January and February, and restated that President Bola Tinubu earlier in the year approved ₦68 billion in co-financing for vaccines.

According to him, the intervention prevented a potential nationwide stockout.

He emphasised that procurement of vaccines is centrally coordinated while delivery remains the responsibility of states, “The vaccines are available. But if health workers are not delivering them, they don’t work for us; they work for the states,” he said.

He said mapping of security-challenged and remote areas identified about 7.4 million persons requiring targeted services.

According to the ED, facility revitalisation is ongoing nationwide, supported through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), which now finances 13,512 PHC facilities.

While disclosing that the Federal Government has activated a nationwide last-mile vaccination strategy using multiple delivery channels, the ED said 7.4 million children have been documented and 3.4 million vaccinated through the approach, while 19 States have signed MOUs with the agency to implement it.

He confirmed that drone delivery has cut access time in Cross River from six hours to about 60 minutes and reduced zero-dose prevalence in Bayelsa from 40 percent to 20 percent.

To cushion inflation, he said facility funding has been increased, with low-volume centres to receive ₦600,000 per quarter and higher-volume centres ₦800,000, with disbursements paid directly to facility bank accounts for transparency.

States, he added, are also adopting a new manpower strategy, with 1,909 community health workers and 1,155 skilled birth attendants hired in the first ten participating states, ensuring continuity and avoiding post-programme disputes.

Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed Super Eagles defender Ola Aina will be out of action against Everton Saturday, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 28-year-old was helped into the tunnel by Forest’s medical staff in the first half of their 1-0 victory against Manchester United at the City Ground.

Santo revealed his side may be without essential figures like Chris Wood, Anthony Elanga, and Taiwo Awoniyi.

“We are still assessing all of them. They are struggling with problems – some small, some not so small – but we have to assess them. We have one more day, and then we will see if they can be available for the game.

“We are hopeful on all of them. It can be all of them, or it can be none; we don’t know. It depends on how they recover and how they feel.

“We miss all the players when they are not available. Chris (Wood) has been giving us so many things. Unfortunately, the situation with Taiwo (Awoniyi) happened at the same time.

“We are trying to cope. Many of the players are not playing in their usual positions, so they are trying to adapt to different situations, but this is what it is about. It happens to other teams, and it happens to us now. We have to fix it,” the former Tottenham Hotspur gaffer said in quotes revealed by Nottingham Post.

Nottingham await scan on  injured Aina

Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has stated that they are awaiting scan  result to ascertain the severity of the injury sustained by the Super Eagles right back, Ola Aina.

The Nigeria fullback was substituted in the first half of their 1-0 win over Manchester United on Tuesday after he felt his hamstring in the 36th  minute.

Nottingham Forest continued their remarkable form against Manchester United as former Red Devil Anthony Elanga scored to give the home side an early lead five minutes into the game. However, they suffered a setback as Ola Aina pulled up injured in the 36th minute, leading to a double substitution.

Despite the changes, Forest went on to defeat Ruben Amorim’s side, completing a first league double over Manchester United for the first time since the 1991-92 season.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Nuno Espirito Santo expressed his concern over Aina’s fitness but added that a scan will be needed to determine the extent of the injury.

”We will have to access. It’s always a concern when a player injures by himself, so we are going to scan and see how it is,” the gaffer said. “We’re not quite sure (Calf-related injury), I think only the scan will say exactly,” he added.

The head coach also provided an update on leading goal scorer Chris Wood who sustained an injury during the international break: ”Like I said before, it’s gonna be day by day. He’s getting better, today the feedback is that he’s better, tomorrow hopefully he’ll be better, but he is going to be accessed day by day.”

Nottingham Forest will be hoping that Ola Aina’s injury is only a minor one as they will need him — as well as the other injured players — fit for the rest of the season in a bid to achieve Champions League qualification.

Aina, who has made 30 appearances for Forest this season, remains a major doubt for the upcoming weekend fixture against Aston Villa.

Nottingham 2-0 Aston Villa: Aina rated high after historic goal for Forest

Nottingham Forest’s six-match winless run came to an end as goals from Ola Aina and Orel Mangala saw them beat Aston Villa 2-0 at the City Ground.

The hosts got off to the perfect start, opening the scoring with just five minutes on the clock. Nicolas Dominguez had already fired wide before Aina put the Reds ahead. It was a terrific finish from the full-back after being teed up by Harry Toffolo following a strong Anthony Elanga run down the left.

Forest continued to get in some promising positions as the first half wore on but couldn’t quite make the most of them. And they needed a strong save from debutant Odysseas Vlachodimos to deny Nicolo Zanilo and keep them in front. Dominguez had a great chance to make it 2-0 shortly before the break but couldn’t find the target from Aina’s cut-back.

Mangala had no such trouble barely a minute after the interval, though. Set up by Toffolo, he drove home to double the Reds’ lead.

Forest still had some nervy moments as Villa looked to get back in the game. Vlachodimos thwarted Moussa Diaby, and Ibrahim Sangare cleared off the line from a corner, but Steve Cooper’s side saw the game out to claim all three points.

Yesterday’s was Ola Aina’s first goal for Nottingham and his fifth in 144 appearances in top-flight league football.

His performance earned him high ratings as Nottingham Post awarded him nine marks out of 10, saying: “Super finish for his first goal for the club. Versatility is proving to be a great asset as he switched from right to left during the game. Proving to be an excellent signing.”
