Military has secured North East from insurgents – NAF chief

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, said on Friday the military has successfully stabilised and secured the North East from Boko Haram insurgents.

Abubakar stated this at a graduation ceremony for 150 participants of skills acquisition and vocational training programme in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The training was organised by the Nigerian Air Force Officers’ Wives Association (NAFOWA).

Sadique attributed the success to recent air and ground bombardments of Boko Haram stronghold as well as combined efforts of other members of the Armed Forces.

“We are not aware of any national security issue in the North East. What I am aware of is that we have done substantially well in stabilising and securing the North East.

“Looking at Maiduguri itself, you will never believe that there was any security challenge there. This is so because there is no security challenge.

“What we are just doing is to mop up what is still remaining (insurgents). We are doing substantially well and making substantial progress.

“We had the Operation Ruwan Wuta – a 10-day bombardment day-and-night operation that substantially reduced suicide bombings and eliminated organised attacks by insurgents,” he said.

The NAF chief said the military has recorded successes in the North East and in other regions of the country since the current administration took office in 2015.

He commended NAFOWA for its support to the less privileged, particularly the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the country.

Boko Haram: NAF Operations gulps 1.03m Aviation Fuel

The Nigerian Air Force yesterday its air operations against Boko Haram in the North East has gulped over 1.03 million litres of aviation fuel from its reserve.

It added that said its aircraft operations in the Operation Lafiya Dole component have peaked at about  1077 hours so far.

According to the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, the nation’s air power can now be projected effectively beyond the country.

Air Marshal Abubakar disclosed this in Abuja during the opening of strategic meeting with Air Force Branch Chiefs, Air Officers Commanding and Field Commanders at the Air Force Headquarters.

He warned elements of the Boko Haram insurgent groups to have a rethink on their activities in the Northeast, stressing that air operations within the coming weeks against them would be too hot for them to endure.

The Air Force Chief also said he had deployed a team of medical personnel from the service to Makurdi, to attend to victims of last week’s flood in Benue State.

Air Marshal Abubakar who said the meeting was aimed at seeking possible ways of moving the service forward in line with contemporary expectations, disclosed that his administration had graduated 16 trained pilots at the Flying School Kaduna.

He noted that the feat was made possible after 33 years due to some critical challenges within the institution.

He said: “We have done a lot in the last few months in terms of the structure of the Nigerian Air Force,in terms of training,in terms of capacity building and in terms of maintenance.

“Reports from units indicate that we are really making substantial progress as regards responsibilities assigned to us by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The uniqueness about this set of cadets is that this nation s the first time in 32 years that the Nigerian Air Force is graduating cadets from 401 Flying Training School Kaduna, “he said.

Speaking further, Abubakar said:” In the past years,we used to graduate officers, officers graduate from Primary Flying Training in Kaduna.

But by the special grace of God and with the commitment of the Air Officer Training Commanding, the Commander and our late colleague commander, Group Captain Adanu Ochai, who was the Commanding officer of the flying wing,we have been able reverse the train.

“With the graduation of these cadets now,we are looking forward to the day when we will have cadets as instructor pilots. It has happened in the past and it’s going to happen again.”

He added:”Also since we came,we have brought into the service over 1900 recruits, who are supposed to join us in the service to support us to tackle the challenges facing our nation.

“In addition to this, about 106 Direct Short Service cadets have graduated and they have been posted already to different units of the service.

“It is also gratifying to note that we have projected air power beyond Nigeria. The C130 has contacted a number of flights to deliver relief materials to Sierra Leone

“I believe so much has been achieved but we need to evaluate all that we set out to achieve. We are not yet done,we must redouble our efforts especially in the North East.

“I know we have commenced operations in the North East which is aimed at further degrading the Boko Haram. We are going to massively dominate the entire area and make it extremely difficult for anybody that is there that is a criminal who wants to come out to kill innocent Nigerians.”

On what the service has done in its humanitarian programme, Abubakar said:

“In our humanitarian programme,we have 241 IDPs patients have been attended to free of charge.

“I have been briefed by our Chief of Medical Services today that our medical team has been deployed to Makurdi to provide medical services to the indigenes of Benue State that have been affected by recent flood.”

NAF: African Partnership Flight opens in Lagos

The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) on Monday hosted three African countries for the African Partnership Flight (APF) in Lagos to further enhance regional cooperation, increase interoperability and build capacity.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Chad, Niger and Benin Republic participated in the US-backed APF – a multi-lateral military-to-military engagement designed to boost African cooperation in aviation.

Speaking at the opening, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, said it was important for contiguous nations to pull their resources together to ensure a synergy in their operations.

“Globally, the concept of regional forces has gained recognition as the best approach towards solving common security issues.

“This is because the most prevalent form of warfare in contemporary times is asymmetric in nature and often transcends international borders,’’ he said.

Abubakar said that the regional synergy was for the common goal of stamping out the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East of Nigeria.

“The NAF, which is one of the instruments of national power, is not unmindful of the occasional need for services to participating in both joint and combined operations.

“The service is also mindful of the effect and aftermath of insurgency with particular reference to the plight of innocent civilians including women and children, who often are the unintended victims.

“We are all aware of the current Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria which has resulted in over two million Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) who are in dire need of one basic need or the other,’’ he said.

Abubakar said it was for this reason that NAF embarked on several humanitarian programmes aimed at alleviating the plight of the IDPs.

He commended the U.S. Air Force Command in Europe for bringing together countries of the region to stimulate a combined security and humanitarian environment.

The Lagos State Gov., Akinwunmi Ambode, in his keynote address, said armed forces all over the world have the traditional role to defending their nations from external aggression and maintaining territorial integrity.

Represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Mr Oluseye Oladejo, Ambode said the armed forces had been busy doing a good job of confronting our nation’s multifaceted internal security challenges.

“With the changing trends in modern warfare, armed forces have been further saddled with the tremendous responsibility of providing regional security through multinational joint forces.

“However, the major problems confronting such multinational forces are usually differences in doctrines, training, weapon, language and cultures, thus, underscoring the need for constant joint training to enhance interoperability.

“You will all recall that in a bid to re-position the armed forces to better cope with those challenges, the present administration under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari has made modernisation, re-equipping and continuous training a top priority,’’ he said.

He said it was particularly noteworthy that the U.S. had been supportive in the efforts at building the capacity of NAF personnel.

“On the choice of theme, I expect that this event would contribute to further building the capacity of the NAF personnel in their untiring efforts at reaching IDPs and other non-combatants,’’ he said.

Highlights of the 2017 APF, themed – Aero medical Evacuation and Medical Deployment – included training of officials from participating countries and static display showcasing the arrangement of stretchers in the NAF C-130H aircraft.

Present at the exercise were senior military officers and their counterparts from the U.S and other African countries.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Friday graduated 1,928 recruits who completed their basic training at the NAF Military Training Centre, Kaduna

A statement from the Director of Public Relations and Information of the NAF, Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya said it was the first time the institution graduated such a large number of recruits.

He said it was made possible due to the expansion of facilities at the training centre with the capacity to train about 2,500 at a time.

The statement reads: “The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today, 21 July 2017, graduated 1,928 recruits, who have just successfully completed the Basic Military Training Course (BMTC) at the NAF’s Military Training Centre, Kaduna.

“The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who was the Reviewing Officer and Guest of Honour during the colourful Passing Out Parade (POP) ceremony, stated that it was the first time in the history of the NAF that such a huge number of recruits would be graduating at the same time.

“According to him, the feat was made possible by the recent expansion of the training facilities at the MTC to train up to 2,500 recruits at a time as against the initial capacity of 500 recruits. As a result, the NAF had successfully trained, in all, 4,163 recruits for the Nigerian Air Force, between    July 2015 and today, thereby reducing unemployment in the country.

“He, therefore, expressed profound gratitude to Mr President who, in spite of harsh economic realities, continues to support the NAF to enable it meet its operational requirements and the welfare of its personnel.

“Air Marshal Abubakar charged the graduands to take advantage of the knowledge and skill acquired, from the newly introduced Internal Security Module, to safeguard lives and properties wherever and whenever they were deployed for Internal Security duties. In addition, the CAS reminded the new recruits of their civic responsibility.

“You are subject to both military and civil law. Hence, you must submit to civil authority and protect our democracy. I urge you to treat all our people with respect and dignity,” he added.

The CAS also presented awards to the best 3 graduands in order of merit namely Recruits Anyim Emmanuel, Awokoya Adeshola and Nwamiri Chiomaobi respectively. Air Marshal Abubakar seized the opportunity to commission a new project and also inspected other ongoing ones.

The POP ceremony was attended by many senior military officers, serving and retired, as well as dignitaries, including the representatives of His Excellency, the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and the Emir of Zazzau, Dr Shehu Idris (CFR).

Many of the new recruits from the BMTC 37/2017, who have received special training, would be deployed to the North East to enhance airfield protection and also support fighting land troops. It is recalled that the NAF recently released the list of another set of over 3,000 successful recruits, who would soon commence the BMTC.

  • Air Force: RAF detachment deployed to train Nigerian Regiment.

Air Force: RAF detachment deployed to train Nigerian Regiment.

The UK has deployed officers from the Royal Air Force (RAF) Force Protection (FP) Wing from RAF Lossiemouth to Nigeria to train the Nigerian Air Force Regiment for six weeks.

The Royal Air Force is the UK’s aerial warfare force formed toward the end of the First World War on April 1, 1918 and it is the oldest independent air force in the world.

A statement by the UK High Commission, Press Officer in Nigeria, Joe Abuku, said this on Thursday in Abuja.

Abuku said that the detachment was made up of a 66 person Short Term Training Team (STTT) from No. 5 FP Wing of RAF.

“The focus of the STTT is to deliver a training package which enables students to operate effectively in the Complex Air Ground Environment (CAGE) by understanding their role to provide security and Force Protection operations both inside and outside an Air base.

“This forms a key part of a layered defence system; deterring and defeating an enemy away from the airfield whilst also assuring internal security of a base.

“Additionally, Commissioned and Non-Commissioned Officers will be given the opportunity to enhance their tactical leadership and planning skills, whilst the Junior Air-officers will build on the skills they learned during basic training,” he said.

He explained that the detachment, the third undertaken by 5 FP Wing in a five year programme came after a request from Nigeria.

He said that the Nigerian Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, had requested UK to assist in capacity building for the Nigerian Air Force Regiment.

He quoted Abubakar as saying, “given the importance of bases in the airpower delivery matrix, it is not inconceivable to expect our adversaries to target our airbases.

“As a matter of fact, we have had an attack on one of our airbases in the recent past, and current intelligence reports keep highlighting the possibility of attacks on our bases.

“All these reinforce the need to emplace a robust base defence concept that is capable of providing guidance for responding to a wide range of situations that may threaten our bases.”

He quoted Officer Commanding 5 FP Wing, Wing Commander John Rees as expressing delight that the detachment was in Nigeria and appreciated the warmth welcome given to them.

“We are proud of our Royal Air Force heritage and the opportunity to represent our service in the Defence Engagement arena,” Rees said.

The Wing Commander said that the detachment had already delivered Train the Trainer package to 50 Non Commissioned Officers and Commissioned Officers.

He added that a further 250 students would now begin the Foundation Phase bringing a total of around 300 Nigerian personnel to be trained across a mixture of ranks.

The programme, according to him, will culminate with a demanding final exercise at a live airfield to validate the understanding of all skills taught in a realistic environment.

He said that this would be prior to the graduating students deploying to their first operational assignment in the Nigerian Air Force.

He said that the team would wrap up by mid-July.
