  • Airport Road, Pen Cinema flyover ready in December

The 10-lane Airport Road and Pen Cinema flyover would be completed by December, the contractors handling the projects have said.

The contractors, who spoke  during an inspection tour of ongoing projects by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, also said the network of roads in Ilaje and Bariga as well as a new jetty through which Ikorodu, Apapa, Lagos Island, Badagry, Ajah and Epe could be linked via the waterways would be ready in July.

Oshodi Transport Interchange, they said, will be delivered by September.

Speaking at the U-turn flyover point on Airport Road, Ambode appealed to residents to bear with government for the inconvenience being experienced.

He said the project was designed to change the face of Lagos for good and improve on the economy.

He said: “As much as possible, we have tried to reduce the impact of traffic on residents and other road users believing that it is in the overall interest of all that we should have a standard road that leads to our international airport. I have been assured by the contractor that this project will be part of our Christmas gift; it will be ready before Christmas and we should be able to use it in conjunction with the Oshodi Bus Terminal and then make a major facelift of what we are having in this whole axis.”

Ambode said government would soon commence payment of compensation to those whose structures gave way for the project once the necessary paper works are concluded.

On the Oworonshoki Lagoon reclamation, designed to transform the blighted area to major tourism, transportation and entertainment hubs, the governor clarified that contrary to some reports in the media, the project was not a housing scheme but part of the overall programme for Lagos to emerge as the entertainment hub for Africa.

He said 30 hectares land space have so far been reclaimed out of the 50 planned for the scheme, while upon completion, the project would end the perennial flooding in the area, and would also accommodate boutique hotel, event centres, cinema, clubs, bars, bus terminal, parking space with capacity for about 1000 vehicles, among others.

The Governor hailed the contractor handling network of roads linking Bariga to Ilaje and a new jetty for the level of work done so far and the assurance that the projects would be delivered by July.

He said in a bid to cater for the growth in economic activities that the projects would facilitate to the area, a comprehensive health centre would be commenced immediately in Ashogbon, while the additional 14 roads already approved to be constructed in Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) would also be delivered on schedule.

While inspecting the Maternity Centre in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja popularly known as Ayinke House and the Pen Cinema Flyover, Governor Ambode lauded the contractors and medical personnel for a job well done so far.

“When you add the total length of the Pen Cinema Bridge together, it is equivalent of Ajah and Abule Egba Bridges. In terms of the width, it is wider. We are impressed with the progress of work here; I am actually impressed with what has been done in the abatement area and the piling that is being done. We believe this flyover will change forever the economic landscape of the Agege axis because it comes with its economic value and expanding our infrastructure to this axis by complementing what we have in Abule Egba is the right way to go. I just want to encourage the contractors to deliver on schedule by December,” he said.

He said the Ayinke House, which is designed to be the major baby factory for the state, would be delivered in June and commissioned for public use by July.

The Ayinke House is a 162-bed space facility and expandable to 250, with other features such as 22 neo-natal intensive care units, 16 intensive care units for adults, five fully equipped theatres, laboratory, common ward, maternal and child care centre, among others.

LASTMA’ll ensure free traffic on airport road, says commissioner

Lagos Stare Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials have been drafted to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) road to ensure seamless traffic, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development Rotimi Ogunleye said yesterday.

In a statement, the commissioner said the government had begun  removin structures on the right of way (RoW) for the  road’s expansion.

“As part of the measures put in place by the government to address the inconvenience the project may pose to motorists and commuters during the construction, the government has created alternative routes and diversions which would be manned by LASTMA officials. This is basically to ensure seamless traffic and assist motorists and commuters get to their destinations on time.”

On the issue of payment of compensation, Ogunleye said : “Government is sincere about payment of compensation to all those affected.  We have paid more than 90 per cent in Mosafejo Oshodi, Abule Egba and Epe 1. We are presently paying Epe 2 and as for other areas such as Irede, Isawo, Igbogbo-Bayeku, Agege Pen Cinema, Oyingbo and the MMIA road, we have started the compilation and very soon payments would made.”

He urged all thjose affected to submit the certified registered title  of properties within the  RoW, approved building plan permit for the affected structures and any other relevant documents as proof of ownership to his office to ensure ease of processing payments.

The commissioner appealed to the people to bear with the government during reconstruction, explaining that on completion, a world class  road would be delivered.

According to him, the road which is an entry point into the country would project a reputable image for the state and the country and attract investors and tourists .

  • Ambode: All clear for airport road project

On Wednesday, May 31, acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, ended the controversy between Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode and his predecessor, now Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, when he granted the latter the permission to go ahead with the total reconstruction of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), road in Lagos.

Those who have followed the development, would recall how Ambode, on March 8, cried out to the whole world about how the minister, was practically constituting a stumbling block to the road project, one of the components of his vision to make Lagos stand at par with other mega cities of the world.

Of course, Fashola, in his counter, with behind-the-scene engagements between Abuja and Lagos, depicted the governor as being economical with the truth, insisting that it was the need to go through the full process that caused the delay and not other sinister motive(s) as Ambode implied.

Well, other bits and pieces, odds and ends that followed thereof, not only went further to emphasise that all was not well with and within the camps of the two very significant and highly relevant personalities of the Lagos politics, but that the said road, was going to be a victim of the ostensible mortal feud.

Even with the later-day photo-ops of smiling faces of the two during subsequent meetings, many people still found it hard believing there is a significant thaw in their apparent frosty relationship.

That Fashola, was virtually missing in action, during the events that commemorated the 50th anniversary of Lagos State, when he was supposed to be one of the visible figures, only went to emphasise, the half-empty narrative, with the concomitant interpretation that the project was still caught in the crossfire of the fight of the elephants.

Perhaps, it might even be true that both have since truly mended fences, after that first apparent public spat, thus, leaving leave everything else in the domain of mere conjectures. But what cannot be regarded as such is the implication of the intervention of the acting President.

Ambode, had told his audience at the press conference that he had gathered enough money to get the project going and completed in record time and only needed the approval to get on.

Now, only those not conversant with the said road would be lost on what reconstructing it in the manner the governor suggests would imply. This is a stretch that could constitute a significant distress if not a fatal end for the uninitiated. For a motorist exiting the airport, a single mistake, made in a matter split-second-decision at the maze of its intersections, had actually led to a sort of point-of-no-return in some cases.

Some of the victims, had actually found themselves at Mile 2, in which case it took them some hours to make a simple U-turn or even as farther as Apapa, where, having been unlucky to get caught in its legendry gridlocks, they spent a whole day to correct the error.

Now, this is what Ambode wants to remedy, with his enticing option of a complete reworking, not only in concept, but in the actual facilities on ground.

Hear the governor: “The state currently has a design of 10 lanes from Oshodi to the International Airport with interchange and flyover that would drop towards the local airport. The contractor is set to go and everything as I said has been completed and we already have the cash, but alas we are having challenges with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing. This is a Federal and not a state road. The Federal Ministry of Works believes that they should do the road, but they have not been able to do it all these years past.”

The fact that the governor has completed similar projects in the last two years, is a demonstrable evidence, which naturally would inspire confidence that the airport road might not be a mirage stirred by politics. Such projects like the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu link bridge at Mosan in Alimosho, the Ajah Roundabout connecting bridge and the Abule-Egba Bridge, as well as the Berger corridors, done within the period, readily come to the fore.

Much has also been said about the quality of the said projects, meant not only to solve the age-long legendry Lagos traffic, but ensuring that they meet the standards of the governor’s idea of a mega-city.

In fact, the complete illumination on these roads, one of its major features has ensured that Lagos is today, the only city outside Abuja, the Federal Capital City (FCT) where motorists could conveniently drive at night in virtually all the major roads without headlights, as seen in other developed nations of the world.

Naturally, when Ambode is cited in some quarters as one of the stars that signpost the change mantra of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in real and positive terms, many hardly begrudge him, as these landmark projects come into view.

Osinbajo’s intervention, therefore, should be a jolt in the arm to the governor in his bid to transform the state. It also strikes a chord that will change the music in terms of people’s expectation that the governor would hit the ground soon.

Indeed, it is a tempting option for many Nigerians to take sides with the governor were he to continue feuding with his predecessor for the singular reason that Lagos does not only enjoy a special status as a mini-Nigeria, where virtually all citizens maintain one link or the other, but a veritable international player, through which Nigeria is measured in the eyes of many foreign countries.

That Osinbajo, has cured the dog-in-manger factor in airport road project, assuming there was one, is therefore a significant development, but one to be applauded.

Incidentally, no one person has been able to build a country, or in this case, a state alone. The best such individual efforts have achieved, for which they enjoy their specific space in history, is to produce and provide the architecture and mechanism.

For the Lagos governor, the situation becomes even more pointed that he does not enjoy the latitude or longevity in office of the likes of Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew, Malaysia’s Prime Mahathir bin Mohamad or the autocracy and iron-fist character of South Korea’s Park Chung-hee, with which they brought about the transformation of their countries into modern day giants.

He has just six out of his eight years remaining through which he must accomplish his dream Lagos or step aside to watch. Within this period, he could actually put the state on such a galloping pedestal that the mega city project would emerge quicker and irreversibly, or stand aside and watch at the mercy of his successor what comes next.

Much suggests that the governor’s cup for now is actually half-full rather than half-empty. By the time the airport road project is added to the list of what is already in the kitty, there is no doubt that even if the mega city project is not achieved in full, he would have successfully nailed all the planks together to form a platform for its foundation or even erect the permanent structure, which would only need mere paintworks or shining to complete.

There is no reason to suspect any negative change in the picture as events unfold within the remaining period, if things do not go significantly awry outside what the governor could manage.

  • Ambode’s frustration over Airport road

    Ambode’s frustration over Airport road

I read with consternation the frustration expressed by Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode over the non-cooperation by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing concerning the fixing of the International Airport road.

Ambode is very disturbed about the dilapidated state of the Oshodi-Airport road, which he described as an eyesore and an embarrassment to the whole nation as the road leads to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Despite the fact that Lagos state government is ready to fix the road. The Federal Ministry of Works under the leadership of immediate past Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola appears not be forthcoming in terms of granting the required approval for the Lagos State government to embark on reconstruction of the road.

This is where I am saddened and began to flash back to similar needless muscle flexing and power show between some Ministers and State Governors, especially if they are of different political parties. It is therefore absurd and unfortunate if Ambode’s allegation that Fashola is deliberately withholding approval is true. Fashola was the immediate past Governor of the state and a member of the same APC Federal government which is also the ruling party in Lagos state and who knew the bad state of the Apapa-Airport road and who also experienced frustrations from a PDP led Federal Government over such projects.

It will therefore be a puzzle for any discerning observer why Fashola should deliberately frustrate Ambode from developing a state where he was once Governor and also did his best in terms of infrastructure. The allegation of Ambode against Fashola’s attitude is very weighty and going by how Ambode presented the facts, many may be tempted to agree that Fashola may actually be blocking Ambode’s opportunity to excel. There is no reason why Fashola should waste any time in granting the required approval for the Lagos State Government to embark on the construction of the all important Oshodi-Airport Road.

Ambode announced the readiness of the state government to immediately embark on the reconstruction of the road which has been redesigned to accommodate 10 lanes to come from Oshodi to the International Airport with interchange and flyover that would drop you towards the Local Airport. The Governor also announced that the state government is ready with the funds to execute this, immediately approval is granted by the Federal Ministry of Works. So the question now is, what is delaying this much needed approval?

Ambode could not have expressed his frustrations openly without exhausting all avenues to get the approval from Fashola’s Ministry. Now that we have heard Fashola’s side of the story, one is tempted to believe that there may be some reasons other than bureaucratic bottlenecks considering the not too cordial relationship between Fashola and his successor in the early months of the Ambode administration, which was mainly caused by the disclosure of the huge debt left behind by Fashola. The only thing that would soothe the nerves of Lagosians is for the minister to handover the all important road for the Lagos State government to repair.

Any attempt to play politics with a road that needs an urgent attention as the statement from the minister seems to imply, might affect the ordinary Lagosian, who will benefit from the road and the positive impact on the economy of Lagos state as it will save a lot of man hour lost to traffic gridlock on that road. Also given the fact that the road is a major entry point to Nigeria from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, the federal government should have gladly be receptive to the offer of the Lagos State government to do it and finish in six months.

If the allegation is true, Fashola must rise above pettiness and be a statesman that he is supposed to be by immediately putting the interest of the people of the state above any personal animosity he may be harbouring against his successor. With the open expression of frustration by Ambode, there is no way many will not believe Fashola’s action is deliberate considering the fact that such scenario had happened before in Lagos when another Lagosian,  Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe who defected from the Alliance for Democracy (AD) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and became  Minister for Works (2003-2006), was engaged in a power show with then Governor Bola Tinubu over operations of Lagos State Transport Management Agency (LASTMA) officials whom he banned from operating on Federal roads in the Lagos metropolis and quickly assembled his own Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) operatives.

The power show ended in chaos as there were frequent clashes between Ogunlewe’s FERMA officials and Tinubu’s LASTMA officials, not to mention other opportunities the state was denied in the Federal Ministry of Works.  It was Lagosians who bore the brunt of the unnecessary show of Federal might and I don’t think we need such scenario any more in Lagos. Despite the fact that the Federal government is owing Lagos State a whopping N51 billion refund on federal roads rehabilitated by the state government, the governor said the federal government should release the N2Billion appropriated for the Oshodi-Airport road in the 2017 budget, for the state government to embark on the reconstruction of the road. This is not fair!

Ambode also expressed frustration that six months after President Muhammadu Buhari approved the handover of the Presidential Lodge, Marina, the State Government was yet to gain access into the premises. This is also wrong and may send wrong signals out there that Fashola is on vendetta mission because the release of the Presidential Lodge also falls under his Ministry. Why has the key to the Presidential lodge not been handed over to the governor? And why are those involved making very difficult for presidential directive to be honoured? these are germane questions that should bother more than casual observers.

Every Lagosian would want Governor Ambode to be encouraged to continue with the current pace of work in the areas of infrastructure and security which has made Lagos state a yardstick of governance for other states in the country. Many people marvelled at the regeneration of Ojodu Berger which is a beauty to behold, Abule-Egba Flyover Project and also the Aboru/Abesan Link Road and Bridge Project. These projects are repositioning Lagos to measure up to its status as an emerging mega-city.

The only way the minister can show his sincerity is by granting the long overdue approval to the state government to immediately embark on the reconstruction of the Oshodi-Airport road, which he said he will complete in six months and also ensure the release of the N2 bilion earmarked for the project.

Fashola should also obey the presidential directive on the Presidential Lodge by ensuring that access to the building is guaranteed. Anything short of this in the next few days will confirm Governor Ambode’s allegation of vendetta and the insinuation in many quarters that Fashola does not want Ambode to outshine him in performance. This will be so unfortunate and people would easily see him as being petty, mean and sadistic.

    • We can’t locate our daughter since Thursday

How did a member of the National Youth Service Corps, Jessica Eghonghon Edionwele, disappear between the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport-Abuja City Gate highway last Thursday? And who are the brains behind her disappearance?

These are the issues the police are now trying to resolve following a formal report lodged with them by Jessica’s parents.

The 25-year-old corps member is serving in Ibadan, Oyo State, and had arrived in Abuja by air on Thursday to visit her parents.

Soon after her plane landed in Abuja she headed for her parents’ home in the city only to disappear in transit.

Her father, Mr. Joe Edionwele, believes she was abducted.

He told The Nation that the abductors are yet to communicate with the family.

“Our daughter is serving in Ibadan. On Thursday, she left Ibadan for Lagos to board Arik Air Flight on Seat 9A to Abuja. We were able to confirm that the flight landed safely,” he said.

“But between the airport and our residence in Area 1, something went wrong. She was abducted and we have not been able to locate her. We have been searching for her without any trace of her whereabouts. We appeal to Nigerians to assist us to bring back our daughter.

“The kidnappers have not established contact with us.”

It was gathered yesterday that the police and other security agencies have swung into action to rescue the corps member who read Physiotherapy at the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma in Edo State.

Coordinating the investigation and rescue operation is the FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr. Wilson Inalegwu.

“The CP is personally leading the team trying to locate the abducted girl,” a police source said yesterday.

“This is a strange incident along the airport road but we will certainly unmask the syndicate.”
