  • Airtel subscribers to get 100% value on SmartConnect

Airtel subscribers to get 100% value on SmartConnect

    • As telco gives x8 bonus on every recharge

Airtel Nigeria on Thursday announced the launch of SmartConnect package which gives 100 percent value of a customer’s recharge as extra data in addition to the 8 times instant bonus customers get on every recharge.

This was declared in media launch with the telco giant promising to give more value, enrich and empower its customers to do more on the network.

With the new package, Airtel customers will receive bonus data that is commensurate with the total value of their recharge at the end of a calendar month and also get eight times the value of every recharge, instantly, any time they recharge their lines.

Airtel’s SmartConnect, which is nicknamed ‘Ovajara x8’, is the default prepaid plan specifically designed for new customers on the network, to enjoy with registered family and friends numbers.

According to Airtel, the newly revamped SmartConnect package is conceived to empower more telecoms consumers to stay connected with friends, family members and business associates, also offering them an amazing mobile Internet experience as they engage the larger world.

In his speech at the launch, Chief Commercial Officer, Airtel Nigeria, Ahmad Mokhles, said the company is committed to creating value offerings that will enrich and transform the lives of Nigerians, noting that the SmartConnect value offering is practical and relevant just as it is designed to suit the lifestyle of telecoms consumers.

“With the revamped SmartConnect package, Airtel is putting power in the hands of telecoms consumers so that they can do much more, achieve much more and actualize their dreams,” Mokhles said.

With SmartConnect 4.0, when a customer buys a new SIM, registers and inserts it in a device, he/she begins to enjoy the ‘Ovajara’ 8 times bonus and in addition gets the total value of his recharge as data bonus by end of the month.

For instance, if a customer recharges with N200, he/she gets N200 in his main account and receives a bonus of N500 for voice calls, N500 for data, with an additional N200 airtime to call family & friends, and an extra bonus of N200 for social (WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook and BBM), which makes a total of N1600 airtime on every N200 recharge. As additional benefits, the customer then receives data bonus worth N200 at the end of the month.

A recharge of N1000 gives N2,500 bonus for calls to all networks, another N2,500 bonus for data (500MB) and N1000 airtime for calls to family & friends. Customers will also receive extra N1000 airtime for access to social media. By the end of the month, data bonus of N1000 is given to the customer.

The airtime in the main account will remain valid until exhausted while all bonuses have a 7-day validity. Customers can roll over all bonuses as long as they recharge within 7 days else all unused bonuses will be lost.

Subscribers only get the data bonus for the first three months, while the ‘Ovajara’ 8 times bonus continues. Any recharge less than N200 on SmartConnect 4.0 does not attract data bonus, which is given at the end of the month as total value of recharge but enjoys only the ‘Ovajara’ 8 times bonus.

“Details for recharging and checking account remain as before,” the telco said.

  • Airtel debunks rumour of leaving Africa

Airtel debunks rumour of leaving Africa

Airtel Africa, the telecommunications company with operations in 15 countries across Africa, has refuted speculative media reports erroneously stating its possible exit from Africa. The organisation has reaffirmed that it remains committed to Africa and will continue to invest in its operations to grow sustainably in Africa.

Airtel Africa’s recent 3rd quarter results were strong. The underlying Africa revenues for the quarter accelerated by 6.0 per cent Y-o-Y, the highest over the last 9 quarters. The organisation’s efforts to improve the quality of customer acquisitions have resulted in a reduction in customer churn to 4.9 per cent from 6.0 per cent. Data consumption and revenues have grown by 91.0 percent & 24.0 per cent Y-o-Y respectively, led by stronger data networks.

The strong focus on cost management has led to a significant underlying EBITDA margin expansion of 4.5 per cent Y-o-Y, which now stands at 24.5 per cent. Africa is now generating positive free cash and is PBT positive in constant currency.

Raghunath Mandava, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Airtel Africa, said’ “All the steps taken recently with regard to human resources and infrastructure have been geared towards readying the organization to grow efficiently and sustainably in the medium to long term. The company remains committed to competing in various markets and providing more choice to customers through further investments to ensure consistent delivery of quality and value for money services to our customers. We are also accelerating our investments in new data networks and to modernise our existing networks. We are committed to launch 4 G in multiple countries.”

He added “Mergers and acquisitions continue to be the norm for any multinational organization and they affect all global organizations in equal measures as and when they happen. As a strategy, we look for opportunities to acquire or merge in opcos that are operating in a fragmented market structure with too many players in a small market. Last year, Airtel and Orange reached a mutually beneficial agreement on the assets in Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso. Similarly, Airtel also acquired assets in Uganda, CongoB and Kenya in recent times.

The agreements brought together the strengths of Airtel, Warid and Essar. This has offered benefits to customers in the form of a superior and wider network, affordable voice / data services and better customer care. Away from Africa, recently, we merged with Robi in Bangladesh to create a solid and profitable No.2 player in the market.”

The recent results demonstrate the effectiveness of Airtel’s business strategy in Africa.  The organization sees an opportunity ahead to emerge with a broader reach and sharper execution.
