JUST IN: Court restrains Aiyedatiwa from appointing monarch in Ondo community

The Ondo State High Court sitting in Okitipupa has issued an interim injunction restraining Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa from appointing or installing any monarch in Alagbon Community, located within the oil-rich Ugbo Kingdom in Ilaje Local Government Area of the state.

Justice Temitope Adedipe granted the order on Friday, barring all defendants from taking further steps that could prejudice the outcome of an ongoing legal dispute over the traditional leadership of the community.

The court’s decision came shortly after the Ondo State Executive Council (SEC), during a Wednesday meeting presided over by Governor Aiyedatiwa, confirmed Prince Olusola Joseph Ajaka as the pioneer Gbogunron of Idi-Ogba Alagbon.

Announcing the appointment, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, stated that the process followed due procedure and was based on recommendations from recognised traditional institutions.

However, leaders of the Alagbon community swiftly challenged the appointment, filing a motion through D.J. Ayenowo of Sola Ebiseni and Associates, in Suit No. HOK/76/2022. The plaintiffs—High Chief Isaiah Adewole Demehin, a former Commissioner for Information and the Asogbon of Ugboland, and Chief Mallon Ogede, Baale of Alagbon—argued that the Gbogunron family lacks ancestral ties to Alagbon and is not part of its recognised chieftaincy lineage.

They also accused a sitting commissioner from the Gbogunron family of unduly influencing the process.

Justice Adedipe’s ruling restrains the state government, its agents, and the Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Enitiolorunda Obateru Akinruntan, among other defendants, from taking further steps toward the installation of any Oba in Alagbon, pending the hearing of the substantive suit.

The plaintiffs are seeking a declaration that the Gbogunron family has no lawful claim to the Obaship of Alagbon, and that the government’s reliance on a White Paper from the Justice Ajama Commission of Inquiry contradicts the community’s customary laws.

The court also nullified and vacated all previous actions or decisions—whether by document, notice, instrument of office, or otherwise—taken by the government in relation to the disputed appointment.

NANS seeks regulation of rents, hostesl in Ondo

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Ondo State Axis, has appealed to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to intervene in regulating student accommodation rents and support hostel development across the state.

In a statement signed by the NANS JCC Chairman, Comrade Adekanye Adeboye, the student body decried the growing burden of exorbitant rents imposed on students every academic session.

Adeboye noted that many students are being forced to pay rates that are far beyond their means, despite not being income earners.

“High rents are being demanded from students, even though we are not salary earners, entrepreneurs, or civil servants. We are children of market women, farmers, teachers, artisans, and civil servants,” he stated.

While acknowledging landlords’ right to earn from their property, he questioned the morality of profiting at the expense of students’ well-being.

“I am not saying landlords should not earn from their property, but must that profit come at the expense of students’ survival?” he asked.

The student leader urged the Ondo State Government and House of Assembly to introduce a Student Rent Control Policy in communities with a high student population to ease the burden and ensure access to affordable housing.

“This can be done by capping rent increases yearly within a controlled bracket, prohibiting demands for more than one year’s rent upfront, just as it is done in Lagos State under the Tenancy Law of 2011 and making it effective, establishment of a tenancy tribunal or mediation body to resolve disputes between students and landlords amicably, and mandating landlords to register their student properties to meet a basic minimum standard.

“Such policies are not new or radical. They are happening in places like Lagos, Enugu, and other states, where the governments understand that protecting students is part of protecting the state’s future.

“Beyond rent control, we strongly recommend that the Ondo State Government invests in constructing student hostels directly on or near campuses. A Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model can also be explored, with the government providing land and investors handling construction, under strict supervision and student-friendly pricing.

“Imagine if each state-owned campus in Ondo had at least 500 new hostel beds annually built with security, water, electricity, and affordability in mind.”

According to him, such a step will significantly reduce pressure on off-campus rentals, provide safer alternatives for students, empower more female students and vulnerable students who are currently exposed to harassment or exploitation, and boost academic concentration because no student would have to stress about shelter.

“Your Excellency, many brilliant, smart and intelligent students have deferred their education or dropped out because they couldn’t afford accommodation. Many parents have cried silently after selling all they had to put their child in a school where accommodation costs more than tuition.

“That is why this call is urgent and sacred. Sir, the students of Ondo State are not asking for too much. We are only asking to be treated fairly. We are asking for protection from the wave of greed and the illusion that education must come with suffering.

“As the Governor of the Sunshine State, you have consistently demonstrated a commitment to education. However, this presents another golden opportunity to show leadership and compassion by leading the first state-wide rent reform and hostel development plan for students in Nigeria’s South West.

“We trust in your listening heart. We believe in your political will, and we pray that history will remember you for not just building roads but for protecting young people who carry the burden of tomorrow.

“We are ready to engage constructively. We are willing to collaborate with the Ministry of Housing, the Ministry of Education, the House Committee on Youth and Education, and landlord associations to get this done. Together, we can pioneer what other states will one day adopt as a model.”

Aiyedatiwa hails Appeal Court victory as affirmation of people’s mandate

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has described his victory at the Court of Appeal as a reaffirmation of the mandate freely given to him by the people during the November 16, 2024, governorship election.

On Thursday, the Akure Division of the Court of Appeal upheld the earlier decision of the Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, affirming Aiyedatiwa and his deputy, Olaide Adelami, as the duly elected candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The three-member panel, comprising Justices Nimpar Yargata, K.I. Amadi and I.M. Sani unanimously dismissed appeals filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Agboola Ajayi, alongside others from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied People’s Movement (APM), and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The appellants had sought the nullification of the election, alleging widespread irregularities. However, the court ruled that the petitions were without merit, noting that the parties failed to provide credible evidence or witnesses to back their claims of electoral malpractice.

Speaking after the judgment, Governor Aiyedatiwa thanked the judiciary and described the ruling as a victory for democracy and the rule of law.

“I give glory to Almighty God, who orchestrated this journey from the beginning and used the good people of Ondo State. Over 366,000 residents gave us their mandate on November 16 last year to continue governing this state as the seventh democratically elected governor.

“That mandate was validated by the tribunal and has now been reaffirmed by the Appeal Court. While some political parties tried to overturn the people’s decision through the back door, the judiciary has fulfilled its role by upholding the choice made by the majority of voters across the 18 local government areas of the state,” the governor said.

He also commended his deputy, the legal team, and the leaders of the APC for their unwavering support throughout the legal process.

“This victory is not just mine. It belongs to every son and daughter of Ondo State who stood firm for democracy,” the governor added.

    • Fayemi absent at  solidarity rally

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has secured the resounding backing of Ekiti State for re-election in 2027.

In a parallel show of solidarity, Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s ambition for a second term in office also received a ringing endorsement, affirming a united front.

They received the seals of approval during a massive rally in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, yesterday.

It was attended by all previous governors of the state  – Adeniyi Adebayo, Ayodele Fayose and Segun Oni – except the immediate past helmsman, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

All the former governors okayed President Tinubu and Oyebanji to continue in their positions.

The Ekiti State Governorship election is due to hold on July 20, 2026.

The huge turnout and the bipartisan attendance made the rally unique.

Fayose is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – he even wore a fez cap with PDP inscription.

Oni, a former PDP member, last contested for governor on the ticket of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Neighbouring Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly Adeoye Aribasoye, House members, and former deputy governor and one-time Senate Minority Leader, Senator Biodun Olujimi, graced the rally.

As early as 7 am, party faithful, political leaders, labour union leaders, market women, artisans, traditional rulers and other stakeholders started converging on the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion venue.

A motion for President Tinubu’s endorsement was moved by Senator Bamidele and seconded by the federal lawmaker from Ekiti East, Emure and Gboyin Constituency, Femi Bamisile.

The endorsement of Oyebanji and his deputy, Mrs Monisade Afuye, was moved by Speaker Aribasoye and seconded by his deputy, Bolaji Egbeyemi.

Both motions were unanimously adopted by the crowd through thunderous voice votes.

Thereafter, a letter communicating the president’s endorsement was presented to Dr. Basiru for onward delivery.

The APC enlarged its coast with the defection of Senator Olujimi and Obafemi Adewale (SAN), and a state lawmaker from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Babatunde Omotola.

Oyebanji, a humble governor, says Fayose

Fayose declared his unflinching support for the re-election of the President and the governor.

He described the event as a watershed in the political history of Ekiti, noting the significance of collective endorsement by former governors, state leaders, and National Assembly members from Ekiti.

Fayose said their presence was a “remarkable show of unity and a sign of political maturity”,  describing the cohesion among ex-Ekiti governors as a model for all states.

Although he reiterated that he would not join the APC, Fayose explained that his support for President Tinubu and Oyebanji was based on their performance as well as their character.

He said: “I am not a member of his party and I will never be, but I stand here to say I have seen the good work.

“I must commend Governor Oyebanji’s humility and his rare leadership style. He deserves another term.

“I hereby endorse, without reservation, President Bola Tinubu for a second term. I also endorse our governor, Oyebanji and his deputy for a second term.”

Oni: He is a rallying point

Oni and Adebayo said Oyebanji had united the political leaders in the state across party lines and fostered development.

He said President Tinubu and the governor deserve second terms given their developmental strides in infrastructure, agriculture, education, economy, healthcare, youth development and other pivotal areas of development.

He added: “I’m here to say the Nigeria of our dream is coming gradually. And since Nigeria of our dream is coming, Ekiti of our dream is near.

“One thing Governor Oyebanji has done better than us is his ability to bring people together.

“We now have a great opportunity to take Ekiti forward together and make it greater.

“This Ekiti must not just be a mention in Nigeria’s political equation. It must be a dominant feature in the political matrix.

“By working together, we can make Ekiti great and a state of our dreams.”

Coalition can’t stop Tinubu, says APC Secretary

Basiru said President Tinubu and Oyebanji deserve another term because of their excellent scorecards.

He said no political force or coalition can stop President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, adding that the majority of Nigerians are ready to pay him back for his performance.

He said the African Democratic Party (ADC) posed no threat to Tinubu’s second term, describing it as a “conglomeration of expired and lightweight politicians”.

Basiru urged Nigerians to beware of the ADC leaders, saying that they have nothing to offer and are planning to disrupt the development trajectory being witnessed under the administration.

He stressed: “We heard some betrayers have been making fishy moves in Yorubaland, telling you to move to ADC. APC is supposed to be the only political party for Yorubaland.

“We are delighted to receive this letter of endorsement. We have confidence that when it comes to the election, all and sundry in Ekiti will cast their votes for the President.

“We thank the governor for the good work he’s doing in the state. This endorsement is borne out of his good work. That’s why everything is happening.”

    Aiyedatiwa: Ekiti governor is capable

Aiyedatiwa declared that Oyebanji has demonstrated capacity and commitment towards the development of the state in the last three years.

He said no fewer than 22 APC governors have declared their support for the governor’s re-election to consolidate his achievements.

Aiyedatiwa said: “I am here today in solidarity with my brother and friend, Governor Oyebanji, and to declare my total support for his second term because he has touched lives across all sectors of the economy.

“Let me inform our people in Ekiti State that all of us in the Progressive Governors Forum are in support of the governor to continue in office till 2030.”

Ekiti committed to Tinubu, BAO, says Aluko

The chairman of the Statewide Endorsement Committee, Chief Abiodun Aluko, said the event was a confirmation of the collective will of Ekiti people, after months of similar endorsements at senatorial, local and ward levels.

He said the endorsement rally was meant to appreciate the good works of both President Tinubu and Oyebanji.

Aluko, a former deputy governor, said that with the public endorsement, the second terms of Tinubu and Oyebanji are not negotiable.

    Oyebanji: get your PVC ready

An elated Oyebanji thanked the people for their vote of confidence in him and the President, promising not to disappoint them.

He hailed President Tinubu for his transformative policies, which have reshaped the economy, saying that his re-election would further bring development to the country.

He said his administration in the last three years had fulfilled its campaign promises in line with the six-pillar agenda, which has positively impacted the lives of the people.

The governor said he had made an impact in the state due to the bold and audacious reforms of President Tinubu, who had channelled more resources to the states.

Oyebanji asked the people who are yet to register  for their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) to do so “for us to demonstrate our love for him through our votes in 2027.”

At the event were the chairman of the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA), Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority, Oyetunde Ojo; all National Assembly members from the state, Oseni Remi, Mr. Ifedayo Arowosoge, and ex-House of Representatives members Ibrahim Olarewaju and Ibrahim Owolabi.

It was not clear last night why Fayemi was not at the rally. He was not known to be out of the country.

An official in his Abuja office said he was not in a position to give any reason.

Fayemi’s number could also not be reached despite many attempts.

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Ondo Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has called on opposition figures to drop their ambitions and support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election.

Aiyedatiwa: I’m not opposed to local government autonomy

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Monday, clarified that his administration has never opposed the “full autonomy” of local governments in the state.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a four-day training programme for top management staff of local governments and political office holders in the state, Governor Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed that local government autonomy remains critical to grassroots development—but must be implemented within the boundaries of the law.

The training, themed “Economic and Financial Administration of Local Councils in Nigeria,” was organized by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in collaboration with anti-graft agencies.

Governor Aiyedatiwa noted that local governments, as the closest tier of government to the people, play a vital role in community development and service delivery.

“Let me make it clear: at no point has this administration kicked against local government autonomy,” the governor stated.

“However, the implementation must be within legal frameworks, with clearly defined responsibilities and proper guidance to create an enabling environment for success.”

He described the training programme as a strategic intervention to rebuild public trust and eliminate factors that have hindered developmental aspirations at the grassroots.

According to him, the training would strengthen participants’ leadership and management capacities while also enhancing their understanding of good governance principles.

“The programme is designed to promote synergy between political appointees and career civil servants at the local government level. Political office is not for personal gain or political vendetta—it is a sacred duty to serve the people,” Aiyedatiwa emphasized.

He restated his administration’s commitment to accountability, transparency, fiscal discipline, and result-driven governance across all levels of government.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, said the programme was crafted to address critical governance issues at the grassroots.

“As the closest tier to the people, local governments have the primary responsibility to deliver essential services and promote development. This training will equip our leaders with contemporary tools for efficient administration,” Takuro said.

He added that the initiative would also reinforce accountability through a renewed focus on transparency and prudent financial management.

Delivering his remarks, Mr. Gbenga Fasua urged participants to uphold the values of integrity and accountability in their leadership roles.

Aiyedatiwa urges Ondo traditional rulers to embrace peace, unity for grassroots development

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has charged traditional rulers in the state to embrace peace and unity in the interest of grassroots development and good governance.

Governor Aiyedatiwa made the appeal on Tuesday at the official presentation of the Instrument of appointment and staff of office to the first Olusin of Owalusin, Oba Stephen Oloruntele Ogunoye I, at Iwaro-Oka in Akoko Southwest Local Government Area of the state.

Represented by the state commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Amidu Takuro, the governor emphasised the crucial role monarchs play in maintaining peace and ensuring stability in their respective domains.

“Where there is rancour among monarchs, development suffers. Peace is a precondition for progress, and our Obas, being the closest to the grassroots, must lead by example,” Aiyedatiwa said.

He also warned against any form of power tussle or expansionist ambitions capable of disrupting the peace of the state, charging the royal fathers to work together and prioritise the well-being of their communities.

As traditional leaders and local security heads, the governor urged the monarchs to support the efforts at flushing out miscreants and criminals by promptly reporting suspicious activities to the authorities.

He congratulated Oba Ogunoye for being the first monarch to ascend the throne under the recommendations of the Justice C.E.T. Ajama Commission of Inquiry into Chieftaincy Matters, urging him to use the opportunity to foster unity and development in his domain.

Remarking, Takuro, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Oladele Adesanmi, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to fairness and neutrality in filling vacant stools across communities.

He also acknowledged the pivotal roles played by notable sons of the community, such as Dare Emiola and Chief Olugbenga Atiba, in actualising the event.

The Olubaka of Oka land, Oba Yusuf Adebori Adeleye, expressed gratitude to the governor for responding positively to the wishes of the people and pledged continued support for the government.

In his response, Oba Ogunoye thanked the state government and his people for the honour bestowed on him.

The newly installed monarch promised to rule with the fear of God and seek the progress of his people, appealing for urgent intervention on the deplorable condition of roads in the area.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of Akoko Southwest Local Government, Hon. Ayo Ajana, described the installation of Oba Ogunoye as a testament to the political will of the Governor Aiyedatiwa-led administration to ensure every community has a recognised traditional ruler.
