Aiyedatiwa reaffirms commitment to food security, distributes 166 fodders choppers

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening food security and boosting livestock production as a key driver of economic growth in the state.

Speaking over the weekend in Akure during the flag-off and distribution of 166 fodder choppers to livestock farmers, Aiyedatiwa said the initiative aims to move the state toward self-sufficiency in livestock production and support sustainable rural livelihoods.

The distribution is part of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project, a collaborative effort between the Ondo State Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, and the World Bank.

Describing the event as a major step forward, the governor noted that the fodder choppers would help address key challenges facing livestock farmers, including poor feed utilisation and low productivity among smallholder producers across the state.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelami, said the intervention programme aligned with his administration’s developmental agenda to boast the agriculture sector through access to productive tools for farmers.

“In Ondo state, we recognise the importance of sheep and goat farming as not only a critical source of livelihood and food security for thousands of rural dwellers, but also its untapped potential in propelling inclusive economic growth.

“The distribution of these 166 fodder choppers today is a practical and impactful intervention to enhance forage utilisation. The machines would have helped to reduce feed wastage, improve intake, and significantly optimise the nutritional value of available feed resources,” he said.

He advised the beneficiary farmers to use the fodders’ choppers diligently and responsibly, stressing that the equipment will not only serve as tools but as agents of change in their respective communities.

The Permanent Secretary, the ministry of agriculture and forestry, Foluke Tunde-Daramola, explained that the distribution of the equipment marked a significant milestone in the state agricultural development agenda.

She added that the initiative is also a testament to Governor Aiyedatiwa’s dedication to modernizing agricultural practices and empowering the state farmers.

In his words, the state coordinator of L-PRES, Olufemi Adeogun, said the distribution is another milestone in the ongoing efforts to transform agriculture and enhance the resilience of the livestock sector.

Mr Adeogun observed that fodder management remains a critical component of sustainable livestock production, especially in the face of erratic weather patterns, prolonged dry spells, and land degradation.

“These challenges have placed immense pressure on both our farmers and their animals, threatening food security, livelihoods, and rural economies.

“It is, therefore, not only timely but essential that we adopt technologies and innovations that promote efficiency, reduce wastage, and ensure that every blade of grass harvested is put to maximum use.

“The distribution of these fodder choppers, though simple, yet transformative tools will go a long way in helping our farmers improve the quality and digestibility of livestock feed,” he said.
