Ondo APC primary: APC risks losing if Aiyedatiwa fails to secure ticket, says aide

Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Sunday Olugbenga Abire, has told the All Progressives Congress (APC) that it might lose the November governorship election if the governor fails to win the party primary.

Abire warned the APC not to repeat the mistake it made in Edo in 2020 that made Governor Godwin Obaseki to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party.

He said the party would die in Ondo state if the governor loses the governorship ticket.

Abire, in a statement, issued in Akure cautioned the APC to exercise fear in giving the ticket to another aspirant in Ondo.

He said the outcome of the primary would make or mar the party in Ondo State.

According to him, “Can the party risk fielding someone who openly said the APC didn’t pay his school fees? Can the party look the way of a man who is a serial defector? Can the APC put forth a character that can tear apart the soul of the party? Will the APC honour consistency and fidelity? Will the party be conscious of the antecedents of all aspirants?

“The APC will exercise fear in the ceding of the destiny of the party to those who haven’t at any time shown fidelity to the APC. It is precarious to trust the untrustworthy. Not even in this political era where sole sponsors of candidates get the middle fingers after rigorous electoral victory.

“The stability the party needs is what Governor Aiyedatiwa represents. If the party must win, there is no other person that represents the choice of the people other than the incumbent Governor. Beyond winning, the party needs someone who can be trusted to carry on with the ideology of the APC. It is time to unite. It is time to win massively for the APC. It is time to consolidate.”

    Lawmakers, Akeredolu group battle Aiyedatiwa

Thirteen members of Ondo State House of Assembly have disowned Speaker Olamide Oladiji’s claim of lawmakers’ block support for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The Speaker has thus run into trouble waters for allegedly lying that 18 lawmakers have endorsed Aiyedatiwa as candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 2024 governorship election.

Oladiji, who was present at the declaration of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s intention to seek the party’s ticket, said 18 lawmakers were in support of the governor’s ambition.

According to him, “18 members of Ondo State House of Assembly have agreed to support Aiyedatiwa. Even those who are not in the APC are with us in this struggle and by the grace of God, we will arrive at the promised land.”

But the 13 legislators in a statement, dismissed claims by Olajidi that they have endorsed Aiyedatiwa as candidate of the party.

The 13 lawmakers, who passed a vote of no confidence in the Speaker, said his declaration was untrue, misleading, un-parliamentary and ridiculous.

They said there was no resolution passed by the Assembly endorsing Aiyedatiwa.

The statement said: “The House of Assembly operates on democratic principles, and will formally take a collective decision, follow due process and the relevant laws governing the state where it wishes to take any decision regarding the endorsement of a governorship candidate.

“As honourable members of the 10th Ondo State House of Assembly, we were shocked and disappointed to hear the public declaration made by the Honourable Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, to the extent that the Ondo State House of Assembly has agreed to support the governorship ambition of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.

“At no point did the Ondo State House of Assembly deliberate on the governorship ambition of any of the numerous aspirants that have indicated their interests to contest for the state’s 2024 governorship election, let alone agree to support any particular aspirant.

“Mr. Speaker lacks the moral and legal authorities to speak or pledge support for any governorship aspirant on behalf of the House without the explicit consent of members.

“Mr. Speaker has, by his unconventional and false public declaration, misrepresented the honourable House, and in so doing, brought the 10th Ondo State House of Assembly into disrepute, needless controversies and breached our confidence in his leadership.

“Consequently, we hereby pass a vote of no confidence in the leadership of the Speaker, Rt Hon Olamide Oladiji.

“The House of Assembly, however, reaffirms its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all decisions taken are transparent enough and are in the best interest of the people of Ondo State.”

Former Chief Press Secretary to the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, Mr. Richard Olatunde, has said Akeredolu didn’t endorse the governorship ambition of Aiyedatiwa.

He alleged that the betrayal of Aiyedatiwa helped to hasten the death of Akeredolu.

Olatunde, who cautioned Aiyedatiwa to stop exploiting the deceased governor’s name for political gain, said Akeredolu’s family and supporters across the state were unhappy with Governor Aiyedatiwa’s deceptive tactics.

Governor Aiyedatiwa had, on Tuesday, at his official declaration to contest the governorship race, said the late Akeredolu made no pretence of his plan and desire for succession.

“He was deliberate and prophetic. He said it during our inauguration and repeatedly that ‘Lucky will succeed me. Lucky will carry on the work after me.’ At not one, not two or three sessions of the executive committee (exco) meetings had he pronounced Lucky as his desired choice to carry the flag after him.

“He was a man of vision. We will not let him down. We will not waiver. We will not falter. We will succeed. Support me to carry on the work. Work with me to bring the desired goal,” Aiyedatiwa said.

But Olatunde, in a statement issued in Akure, said the narrative regarding the alleged wish of the late Akeredolu for Aiyedatiwa to succeed him had gone too far to be disregarded.

“This narrative began even before our leader was laid to rest. Out of respect and utmost reverence for our late governor, we chose not to engage with those spreading this narrative.

“While we acknowledge that the political atmosphere in the state is intensifying, we want to unequivocally state that the late governor did not anoint or express a desire for Aiyedatiwa to succeed him. On the contrary, the relationship between the late governor and Governor Aiyedatiwa became strained and distant until his demise.

“Despite attending to official matters and meeting people from Akure, the late governor intentionally kept Mr. Aiyedatiwa, who was the deputy governor at the time, away from him in Ibadan.

“Our late governor was deeply disappointed and regretful of certain behaviours and character traits displayed by Mr. Aiyedatiwa during his health challenges, which ultimately led to his passing on.

“We have also observed the circulation of a video recorded during the swearing-in of the late governor and Mr. Aiyedatiwa as governor and deputy governor. Undoubtedly, our late governor had high hopes for Mr. Aiyedatiwa. The late Akeredolu never concealed his intentions.

“One thing that discerning minds can clearly see is the turn of events in the latter half of last year. Trust was betrayed. Confidence was shattered. And the true colours of desperation overshadowed the good intentions of our late governor. What followed was a tale of disappointment and betrayal. Our late leader, to say the least, was heartbroken before his demise.

“We, therefore, caution Mr. Aiyedatiwa to cease these deceptive tactics and focus on his campaign. Akeredolu’s ardent followers, including members of his family, do not support Mr. Aiyedatiwa’s aspiration to clinch the ticket of the party.”

Aiyedatiwa’s media consultant, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, however, said the governor is a democrat.

According to him, the 13 lawmakers are entitled to their opinion, just like the Speaker and those who support the governor in the House of Assembly are.

Ajanaku said the late Governor Akeredolu openly nominated Aiyedatiwa as his successor after taking the oath of office for his second term.

He added that Olabode, the Chief Press Secretary to the late former governor, could not speak for the Akeredolu family and his associates.

He said the governor has received the support of elders of the APC in the state as well as leaders across the 18 local governments “and he is sure to win the ticket.”

He said after the April 24 primary, Aiyedatiwa would rally APC members ahead of the governorship election in November.

The governor, who spoke at the APC secretariat in Akure, said his vision and mission for the state were greatly enriched, having served under the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu between 2021 and 2023.

“My mission will focus on key developmental issues to alleviate poverty, banish hunger and make Ondo State self-sustaining.

“My development agenda is to emplace a State Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (SEEDS).

“Under SEEDS, we will harmonise plans for economic development.

“The strategy of this mission is to birth policies aimed at wealth creation, employment generation, sustenance of high standard of living and consequently eradicate poverty among the people,” he said.

Aiyedatiwa said he paraded very rich political credentials and vast experience in governance.

He listed his experience in governance as former representative of the state on the board of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), as deputy governor, acting governor, before becoming the governor.

“Today, I offer myself to lead, not to rule, to respect your wishes, not to dominate you, and to lead by example of humility, good character and empathy, which I have demonstrated in office since 2021.

“I remain the epitome of ‘Omoluabi’ that you have always trusted. I urge you to vote me as the candidate of our great party,” he said.

Aiyedatiwa urged members of the party to entrust him with the party’s ticket and build the party together.

House of Assembly Speaker Olamide Oladiji hailed Aiyedatiwa for offering to serve the people.

“Your dedication and commitment to serving the people of our state are commendable, and we are confident that your leadership will continue to bring progress and prosperity to Ondo State,” he said.

Oladiji said 18 lawmakers are in support of Governor Aiyedatiwa to emerge as the APC candidate in the November governorship election.

He spoke yesterday in Akure at the official declaration of Aiyedatiwa.

He said lawmakers elected on the platform of other parties were in support of Aiyedatiwa.

Oladiji said: “Ondo Assembly has agreed to support Aiyedatiwa. Even those who are not in APC are with us in this struggle and by the grace of God, we will arrive at the promised land. I appeal to our leaders to go back to their wards and do the needful.

“Let reconciliation continue so that we will deliver Aiyedatiwa as the party’s candidate.”

Ondo 2024: Aiyedatiwa to replace Akeredolu’s REDEEMED agenda with SEEDS for economic development

Ondo Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has said that his development agenda was to create a State Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (SEEDS).

His predecessor, late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredoluinitiated the  REDEEMED agenda as the developmental policy thrust of his second term.

It focused on eight key areas of development such as Rural and Agricultural Development; Educational and Human Capital Development; Development through massive infrastructure; Efficient service delivery, Development and Policy Implementation; Effective Health care and Social Welfare Services; Maintenance of law and order for adequate security; Energy, Mining and Sustainable Industries; Digital Revolution and Entrepreneurship.

Governor Aiyedatiwa promised to harmonise all plans for economic development under SEEDS to lead to wealth creation, employment generation, sustenance of high standard of living and consequently eradicate poverty among the people.

He said SEEDS would enhance economic growth in the rural areas by improving productivity in agriculture, accelerate economic growth in urban areas by encouraging private enterprises and economic activities for the urban poor, improve essential infrastructure and social amenities of the State such as roads, water, electricity amongst others.

Governor Aiyedatiwa spoke in Akure where he formally declared his intention to seek a fresh term in office after completing the tenure of late former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Aiyedatiwa said late Akeredolu had always wished “that I succeed him, not in death though, as the next Governor of the State.”

He said late Akeredolu was a courageous and visionary leader who had no time for pretense and expressed ‘this wish at different fora in both public and private.

Aiyedatiwa said Akeredolu spoke with conviction and implicit confidence in him to carry on the torch of accelerated development.

He further stated that “our departed leader would be proud of me as a worthy constitutional successor who has not derailed on the path of development we jointly pursued.”

The Ondo Governor said he has put the welfare of the people first by ordering all contractors back to sites as well as payment of outstanding salary arrears.

He said he paraded very rich political credentials and vast experience in governance.

Aiyedatiwa stated that his being a former Representative of Ondo State on the Board of NDDC, one-time Deputy Governor, and three times Acting Governor under our late sage and now the incumbent Governor of Ondo State were too material to be wished away.

According to him: “Today, I have come before you in response to the popular yearnings and aspirations of our people to sustain this path of progress and development in the State. Our people and party faithfuls, through multi-dimensional platforms, have expressed their desire for the continuity of this administration beyond 2025.

“The poser therefore is whether or not to respect the people’s yearnings for sustainable good governance they have enjoyed in the last seven years. The people of Ondo State must not suddenly find themselves in Egypt. Never!

“I offer myself, in difference to your popular yearnings and upon wide consultations, not just to run the race, but to be the candidate of our great party, ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS in the 2024 gubernatorial election.

“My mission would focus on key developmental issues to alleviate poverty, banish hunger and make Ondo State self-sustaining. My development agenda is to emplace a State Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (SEEDS).

“My dear people of Ondo State, the gubernatorial primary election is at hand. Your vote is a potent weapon that must be wisely used. We must reject those who seek to buy our conscience with money. We must stop those who seek to govern this State by muscles. That is not what our late legends and founding fathers who once governed this State handed unto our generation.”

The event was attended by Ondo SUBEB Chairman Victor Olaibitan; Speaker Olamide Olajide; the lawmaker representing Ondo Federal Constituency, Ho. Abiola Makinde and Senator Ajayi Boroffice amongst others

A governorship aspirant, Tunji Moreyo, announced his decision to step down for Aiyedatiwa.

Moreyo said he stepped down because he share the same political ideology with Aiyedatiwa and that it would a difficult task to defeat an incumbent Governor.

Speaker Olajidi told the gathering that 18 lawmakers have pledged support for Aiyedatiwa.

He called on leaders to carry on with reconciliation efforts at the grassroot.

Okeyomi, popularly known as Carry Go, noted in a statement issued through the State Director of Information, Mr. Kayode Fasua, that Aiyedatiwa deserved to be picked as a consensus candidate since his performance is top-rate before the masses of Ondo State.

“I will advise all the other aspirants to step down for Aiyedatiwa and allow the governor to continue his good work, becoming the APC consensus candidate in the interest of good governance and unity of purpose,” he admonished.

Okeyomi who spoke in the aftermath of LACO-FS Campaign rallies in Odigbo,  Akoko Northeast, Akoko Southeast,  Ondo West, and Idanre Local Government Areas of the state, stressed the need for the APC to field its best hand, and noted that Aiyedatiwa as governor had amply demonstrated that he could shoulder such responsibility.

“Aiyedatiwa became governor by circumstances of fate, no doubt, but in less than three months in office, he has recorded jaw-dropping achievements.

“In assuming office, he cleared the backlog of workers’ salaries, approved payment of N35,00 palliative to civil servants, and also mobilised road contractors back to site.

“Besides, he has started wooing foreign investors to Ondo State, knowing that there are many youths in need of jobs, and has equally released buses to provide transportation for school children to and fro, to ease the financial burden on their parents,” he stressed.

According to him, the APC in the state should not fritter away this golden opportunity as it should field the governor who is so much loved by the people; especially the masses.
